One of the best Duran Duran songs ever. It's REALLY a celebration, and a gift for themselfs, and for the legions of fans all around the planet. This 4 new songs made me fall in love with music again, such as 40 years ago. Thanks for your review, and happy to hear you also like it.
I agree with your assessment of this possibly being one of the great tracks ever for them. I think back to the lead tracks from "recent" albums that got me excited...All You Need is Now, Reach Up for the Sunrise, Pressure Off, etc. Each of those songs thrilled me quite a bit but THIS song is on a whole other level! I would estimate that I've listed through this song 30 times by now today. I don't recall ever replaying one of those afformentioned tunes quite this mouch. I love it!!
@@kfitz2711 I agree, I keep going back to this song because there is so much in it. From the very first listen, I heard the beat and thought, ooooh i love the "dirty beat". It was giving me 80's club vibes with the cow horn and love the double drums electric and then real drums. The song gives me memories from Is there something i should know plus Wild boys and the reflex and I think it is going to be one of my favourite tracks they have ever done. I love it.
welcome back John and Roger.
FINALLY a song off the new album that I can get behind and LOVE
Look Andy has gone buddy. Anniversary is an absolute gem brings back all the very best of Duran Duran.so many previous songs of the past tucked into this. Boom love it.
Not only is it a fabulous track, I also love all of the Easter eggs paying homage to previous songs. It’s pure genius!
Hand not realized there was another release, had to run over and give it a listen. This is now my favorite for this album. This brings me back to early Duran Duran. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
I am in LOVE with this song!!! The first second, it has a Tiger Tiger feel, then Roger with the drums, John's bass....I'm like, WHA?? Friends of mine is the first thing I feel....then my man Simon starts singing and I am absolutely DONE!! So far, it's the best out of the 3 currently. Can't wait to hear the new album in its entirety!! I have to say it is the first time I am really excited to hear more since Astronaut.
I truly hope this makes the charts. Duran Duran has been largely overlooked since the 80’s. If not overlooked, then definitely underrated. Each of the guys is at the top of their game-Simon’s voice is exquisite, John’s bass is sublime, Nick is beyond amazing on keyboards, and Roger’s drums are a driving force. I hope this song takes off!!!
This is the best yet ❤
This is the best song I have heard in a long time. I immediately fell in love. It has an addictive groove and sounds very true to their musical beginning. I can already picture this opening the show when they tour!!!!
i love this song so much, its just perfect! It reminds of the time back when ragged tiger album came out and with the 3 singles that came off it that the 3rd one the reflex was their biggest and best single. Anniversary is their best single so far and the 3rd one. im so happy that we finally get a 3rd single as from the last albums since early 90s we only got 1 or 2 singles. We probably could get more singles off the album but this is just a great powerful catchy song that is finally over 3 mins long. There's so much in this song, just like my fave song off all you need is now album too bad your so beautiful which i love so much. Anniversary would be perfect live. played it for hours this morning.
Love how they paid tribute to their hits, hidden in the song. Opens like Rio, the base like hungry with Girls on film night version sound, then The reflex (tellalalah, tellalalah) and vocals with hungry like the wolf “do do doo” hints, a view to a kill keyboard sound in background when Simon starts singing, a hint of Friends of mine sound in the opening vocals and wild boys keyboard hints in I think the bridge. Hints of sounds from previous hits is clever.
I am 100% with you. When I heard JT's opening bass, I literally had a chill run down my spine. I think this song is the best off the new album so far and is absolutely electrifying. Based on comments on the band's post of this song, it's hitting other people the same way. Someone even commented that Duran Duran fever is back! haha I can't begin to express how much I immediately loved this song and yep, it's gonna be a killer live!
Yeah, it's the best of the three in my opinion.
I really like them all but this one is EXTRA!
I'm really looking forward to the songs produced by Giorgio Moroder and Mark Ronson.
Same here!
I was literally crying when I heard John's bass because the two other released songs hardly had any bass at all. Thank God we got JT back!
John mentioned that Anniversary is a gift to the fans with little gems hidden throughout that pull from the past sounds. He’s indirectly stating that this is a one off sounding song on the album - we won’t get others like it this time around. I thought for sure you were going to go through and mention all the sections and what they each pull from - I’m sure I’m missing a couple but so far this is what I heard: the intro is much like the Rio intro idea. The thumping verse is a lot like Wild Boys, and the chorus is very much The Reflex. The do, do do’s are Hungry Like the Wolf. The bridge reminds me of something - especially the very end - but I can’t place it. This is definitely my favorite track so far from the new material. As a long time fan I’d love to hear more songs routed in the early day vibes where each member is playing their instruments to their fullest. Invisible, to me, was more like a lack luster Prince song. I get it though - they’re constantly looking to create and in the search of new sounds and developing as musicians. Simon’s vocal on Anniversary is insane; the bass and synths are awesome. Nice job!
A much needed return to form for DD. A great tune.
Absolutely 100% agree with everything you said!! This is truly by far my fave release from the upcoming album!! 👍👍 Much ❤ & stay safe everyone!!
I got emotional first time I listened to this song...I love hearing bits of some of the old hits like wild boys and the reflex. Trying to figure out what other songs I discover. I think I hear girls on film also. Great song! Can't wait to see them live again!
I’ve liked all 3 released songs from Future Past so far. Exciting!
My guess would be : the new album will have the debut album soul. Dark, more raw, dare i say disco and more essential Duran. Just like AYNIN could be a twin brother or sister from Rio, this album maybe will be the twin of the very first album.
That’s what I was thinking.
That would be cool, unfortunately these fist three don’t remind me of the sound of the first album whatsoever.
Absolutely LOVE this song. I was happy with “More Joy”, but THIS is next level. I’m over Andy, but I get what you were saying. The anticipation for this album is killing me. I’m so excited for it’s release. I’m glad you like the song.
I’m completely fine with Andy not being in the band. However when I heard that keyboard part I couldn’t help but think this was a substitute for what Andy would’ve done. I had to mention it because I was thinking it but I’m OK that it’s Nick and not Andy.
@@RedMugMusic I think you made a great point there. As for being "over" Andy...well, I'll always wish he was still in the band because of what he brought to the band, musically. But, it is what it is...I still enjoy the band's music without him as well.
Janet....”Being over Andy” makes absolutely no sense to me!! It’s a ridiculous comment and phrase to post on any platform, the entire human population , from the 52 year old in the Carolinas to any Afghan that was left behind yesterday... is dying for Andy to return to our fav band....I just don’t get it, sorry, shaking my head!!! Hee hee , I’m messing w ya !!
I started following Duran Duran during this year and I feel very excited because I'm going to be part of this era 'future past'.
By the way, great video and also, I agree this song is amazing.
I hope you can understand me well. I still learning English. Have a great day!
My review, after binge-listening to the “visualizer” version of the song.
Opening sound reminds me of their cover of Crystal Ship from their “Thank You” album.
Bass/drum thump in with a Wild Boys vibe.
At :26, the keyboards sound like a take on The Reflex (think “ta-la-la-la”.
Simons voice chimes in and sounds as strong as ever.
My favorite part comes at :59 - 1:06 with a twisted, dark note/chord combo which sounds like the making of something quite interesting. Sadly, that vibe never makes another appearance.
The song continues, strongly, until the bridge.
The “do do do-do-do” (Hungry LTW-ish) starts the change to something more “fluff”.
Then it’s off to the high-pitched chorus.
Next a short keyboard instrumental (more Reflex).
The lyrics begin to lose me at this point.
“We are the song” comes right out of Planet Roaring”.
And straight back to the high-pitched, monotonous chorus.
2:53 Gold. Stone. “Valentine Stones”, anyone? (Side note: Valentine Stones is the last great Duran song, IMO)
Lyrics - It may not seem like much. It may not seem like much at all. It may not seem like much”. Really? At least break that up with something different in the middle, there.
Then back to the high pitch wail of a chorus.which goes on for bar after bar with no change in feel, arrangement, etc.
At 4:22 I really noticed the repetitive base note/chord which is quite “Girls on Film”
4:56 and especially 5:10 seem like treatment at the end of Hallucinating Elvis (or the end of another song from Pop Trash).
Overall, better than Invisible or More Joy, but that’s like saying the Star Wars sequels make the prequels look better.
Weak lyrics and uninspired chorus makes this song a solid C+ effort, in my opinion.
PS - After my post I went and read other’s comments. Okay. I didn’t realize that the recognizable parts were intentional Easter eggs - LOL.
Still doesn’t change how I feel about the song, overall 😁
So true about Valentine Stones. That should’ve been on the main part of the album and released as a single. Amazing.
It's a powerful and excellent single. I hope this could be a smash hit.
I think the drums are real on this one. A couple of the fills seem to be quantized a bit to fit the rhythmic grid a bit better which might make it sound a little fake. The tone of the drums sound real to me though. I could be wrong :-)
Doesn't sound like a drum machine to me.
Great track! ... Andy is long gone! ...the synths superb and Rogers playing live drums which is brilliant the base is cracking. Can't wait to hear this live....this albums sounding epic to date 😉
Andy's name bothers you. Sometimes Nick's synth is too much.
I really Like it,it is Duran Duran sound what we love.I love this song!❤️💥
Agreed. This is by far far my favorite off the new album. If each song lives up to this one, we might have another AYNIN success story! 🙌 Can't wait to hear this one live!
HA, I knew it would be!
TOTALLY ROCKS THE VOICE SIMON IS POWERFUL AND JOHN IS FANTASTIC ON THE BASS ALWAYS AND LOVE ❤️ WHEN NICK STARTS HIS KEYBOARDS 🎹 AND LOVE THE BLUR GUITAR 🎸 PLAYER DURING THE SONGS PLAYS TOTALLY GREAT . I DONT MISS ANDY AT ALL . ROGER IS STILL DOING THE GREAT JOB 👏 ON DRUMS . . MISS WARREN CUCCURELLO YES 👍 BRING HIM BACK LOVE HIS GUITAR 🎸 PLAYER
I think I enjoyed Give It All Up a bit more, but no doubt Anniversary is awesome! The whole song just SCREAMS Duran Duran!
And wow agree on anniversary
Just heard it 1 time so far.
Simons power vocals on anniversary just wow but not surprising.
Do you think possibly a few major hit on the upcoming cd?
4 great songs so far, most albums max out at 2 or 3. Kudos to the band for going outside of their comfort zone and sounding fresh with each new album since they reunited. Say what you want about RCM, I understand but that wasn't what they had planned so I'll give 'em a mulligan. Very excited for this one. Hope it works as an album, PG was more a collection of songs recorded over time. I like the feel of an album that represents a place the band was at a certain point in time, every song working to complement the others.
4 singles?? Before the LP release, are they available on cd's or as i may fear download..
Excellent review! I love the song!
Agree with you buddy, two thumbs up and best track so far out of the three released.
Best of the four, I think.
Great review Red Mug! Great song! This will be a killer opening song LIVE!! I agree 1000% very Reflex--Wild Boys and HLTW if the mated and had a baby in today's world! Thanks to Erol Alkan! He is musical genius to bring their sound and make it current! Can't wait to hear Tonight United..Moroder song..
Durante duran...un mito senza tempo!!!
i know they said that they didn't want the first single to be the party banger, but damn - i wish they had released this one, first. this and More Joy! are just fantastic. the first 10 seconds of the intro totally give me Lady Ice vibes, and then the track moves right into The Reflex cowbell....simply genius!!! that said, i would love to see what Andy could have done with this one, and the outro isn't my favorite, but those are very nit-picky observations. my favorite single since Girl Panic!
They say there are easter eggs and callbacks to past songs. I need to listen 400 more times because so far only Wild Boys pops out at me. Simon pushed it, its great.
I wasn't falling in ❤ with Invisible and More Joy. But Anniversary? Best song off the new album, FUTURE PAST, fo sho!! 🎵🎶🎙🎸🎹🥁😍✌❤😎
I think this track is awesome amazing brilliant fantastic well I luv all of um off this album it's goin to be brilliant I hope they play this September 15th in Brum and the 17th in Scarborough omg omg omg it's goin to be electric wow wow wow wow wow nice to see you give it both thumbs!! Everybody enjoy ok brilliance
Yes Brian, as soon as you said Andy T, I freaked!!! So true are ur comments on how amazing AndyT ‘s guitar part would be where you want it in this song!!! This song is great, invisible is good, Give it all up and More Joy- trash ... nothing they do here on out will beat All You Need is Now... let’s plz not hold this band to that standard , they will fail!!! Let’s just be thankful that these awesome 60+ year olds are still making great music. Stay safe everyone!!!
It's the best song of the 3 released. The only thing missing is some pronounced guitar work, especially after the 4 minute and 20 second mark. Maybe a guitar solo that fades out at the end of the song.
Hey Bri it's a rock track it reminds of tracks like virus dynamics wise.
I think the tracks I, ve heard so far are like what should of been the natural progression from the AYNIK album/sessions
Live in Verona version of this song is really really great !!
Love it
simon le bon is an amazing singer
John Taylor describe the song as formed with little parts of other duran duran hits and with a lot of EASTER EGGS on it.... Love the song but cant find any of those things John says. Anyone?
Whaaaaaaaa?
@@RedMugMusic yeap look at the feed of the DD Instagram
-Relenting opening bass hints at Wild Boys
- Opening keyboard riff is “ta na na na” from The Reflex”
- At the beginning there’s a hint of the reversed metallic bats thrown into a piano from the beginning of Rio.
Those are what come to mind right now. I’m sure there are others.
@@kfitz2711 at the minute 4.40 you can clearly hear a synth sound with portamento that sounds like the one in another DD song. I would say Electric Barbarella.
@@kfitz2711 yep, that’s exactly what I got. Surprised this review missed all of that. Can’t place the bridge yet.
I'm not listening anymore....don't misunderstand me,everything so far is bad ass,but I want to wait for the album...yes,album...I want to see how it all is put together and the atmosphere it creates.
👍🏻
HAHAHA!! You say that. No, I hear ya...I was kind of thinking the same thing. Hopefully they won't release any more "freebies"...
This is gonna be a killer album. Seems to possibly enter my Top3. 4 at the very least.
The chorus is killer.
Wow! HOT TAKE!!!
every song from the new album, so far, have underwhelmed me. Musically, they are really missing input from a guitarist like Andy or Warren.
Everything you said, spot on! I've listened to this 9 -10 times already and liking it more and more, it is definitely the best from the album so far, love the way it ends too. I'm over Andy too for many years but I can't deny you are probably right.
Back to their birth - tottally :)
Andy has been gone for over 15 years. Get over it! It's his choice to not be there. The song doesn't need him just like all the songs over the years he wanted no part of and made excuses for why he didn't wanna be there. Duran Duran have been without Andy for almost 20 years and before that it was 18. He obviously doesn't want to go back to them. Give it a rest everyone!
Hear, hear! Jesus, enough about Andy. It’s not 2005 anymore, let alone 1985!
Sorry no rest for the weary!!! Andy T is sorely missed and badly needed on each song .
Here here.
Andy made his bed and now he’s got to lie in it.
Yes he’s missed by the fans but not so much by the band themselves.
It seems he was a real pain in the arse and always causing tension within the band they are better off without him.
Had a feeling you'd be all over this.
All over it!! 👍🏻
Little bit of Frankie goe's to hollywood in there..
Andy doesn't want it! Give up the dream of AT coming back!
Great song. So far this album seems to be far superior to Paper Gods
Yeah, Paper Gods has a couple of decent songs, but most of the ones I like from that session got left off the album. They were the Target and Best Buy bonus tracks. I think All You Need Is Now is a much better album overall. But still...it's superior to Red Carpet Massacre or a couple others I can think of...Pop Trash or Medazzaland. LOL
I’d say not.
@@robertbell3700 And I'd say we are all entitled to our opinions! And one is not better than anothers!
@@tracytobias9367 yeah he was stating his opinion as well.
Wouldn’t been out of place on Rio! !
Listened to it a lot today since I got the auto preorder download on iTunes.
I like it. But I don’t love it sadly.
I feel the song would be better if it ended around the last chorus on the 4:20 mark.
It just drags it’s feet for too long up to 5:18.
Personally i prefer the other tracks I’ve heard and MORE JOY is an absolute ear worm!
The album looks like it’s going to be a strong one similar to their last two.
Here’s hoping 🤞 👍
🤞🏻
Yes, I agree James. A fade out from 4:13 for me.
Of the three, I like this one and "Invisible". NOT a fan of "More Joy", but who knows? Maybe it'll be one of those "Duran grower" songs...meaning, it may grow on me and I may change my mind. But right now, that one left me cold. This one is a great dance song and I love John's bass on this! Agreed...always wish Andy was in the band. Yeah, I'm mentioning ANDY too! Deal with it...those who can't stand to hear his name brought up! I still like the band without him...so, don't get yer panties in a wad.
That’s hilarious, that dude does have his panties in a wad, push up bra too, man boob type of guy! !!!
@@mattmurdock7444 That's not very nice.
Unfortunately I can't take the screaming in the chorus. While the music is pretty good (still needs more prominent guitar) I can't make it through the whole 5 minutes plus of the song..... the screaming is just too annoying.
Definitely not falsetto… that’s all chest voice. Clearly layered vox in the chorus so wouldn’t be surprised if he patched him some falsetto for texture but that main vocal line you’re hearing is definitely all big chest voice
I was Thinking about you when I was reviewing the singing in the chorus. I’m glad you responded to this. Thank you
Anniversary is a pretty good tune because it actually sounds like a band playing. After hearing Invisible, which is not a good song at all, I lost faith in what the new album might sound like. It’s great to hear John Taylor’s bass driving this song and not some kind of techno sound coming from Nick Rhodes destroying it. I also miss Andy in this band. Andy. along with JT’s bass, made this band what it was. Their best songs always had a driving bass and great guitar riff or melody. This band used to make incredible pop/rock songs and they’re at their best with the guitar and bass driving a song instead of Nick Rhodes’ infatuation with being played in a dance club somewhere.
I was impressed! Simon sounds great on the recording but live he struggles a bit.
personally, I get the sense something is missing from this song... I think it's Andy's Guitar
It insired me to recreate the arrangement to one of my old songs that I deleted from my PC 😉👍
QUE MUSICA FANTASTICA!!!
This song would be a killer instrumental! 🥁🎸🎹🎶🎵 As much as I like the "doo-doos", Simon's vocals are too strained in the chorus (for my liking, anyway).
Glad Rog and JT are so prominent in this tune, though! 🥰 Welcome back, boys! 😜
Good, balanced song as a whole. Simon's voice just like In "Last night In the city" just a bit too strained for my taste, but the end result is a fine.
Great video again, Brian!
I really enjoyed this track having not really warmed to 'More Joy' particularly.
This track 'sounds' like Duran Duran and this will be great live, I feel. It's not anthemic, but it will rock a venue without question.
Fully agree with your comments about substituting the initial keyboard parts with guitar. Love JT's bass part at the very beginning, but I wish it was that 'heavy' and prominent throughout the track.
Simon's voice is very strong on this. Not falsetto, but at the top of his head voice range I would say.
Double thumbs up from me too.
My top three so far:
1. Invisible
2. Anniversary
3. More Joy.
Keep up the great work, Brian.
I love your comment here. I would say though that John is SUPER prominent throughout. It’s one of the reasons I love the track. He’s popping those strings so hard durning the chorus he probably had to restring the instrument after recording this. lol
More Joy didn't give me...more joy. Ha!
Think its great , but fully agree with you regarding Andy
Oh come on ,no more Andy ghosts ,Graham coxon is a contemporary and accomplished guitar player ,Andy is a relic of the past
Oh yeah, totally agree about Andy!!!
I agree completely. I really like the song but after listening to it I felt like it could have used more guitar to make it a bit harder. It’s just a bit too electronic for me, but I still really like it.
Good review I have similar feelings and thoughts about Anniversary single. I like like the beginning and ending of this song, John's bass lines are great here as if he was again playing Notorious ,and yes I miss Andy's sharp guitar as ever, that middle chorus is little bit far off ,but overall it's a great celebration ,they still have a lot to offer. 👍
I grew up with on duran duran and for the most part like all of their music. When they released the wedding album I really believed the band was back and had found their magic again.. .a lot of their newer stuff since has been hit and miss for me. The catchy synth riffs don't stand out as they use to or the songs are getting so full of electro samples and sound effects layered over top, it just starts to feel like too much going on. I still love the sound, just miss the clean sound each musician playing along the other.
Andy isn't in the band, let it go.
1 minute and 22 seconds in and Andy Taylor is brought up. How sad. I stopped watching right away. And by the way, if I'm already that annoyed, try to imagine how the current band members will feel if they watch this....
I appreciate what you are trying to do with your channel (but was hoping for somewhat more serious and analyzing reviews, I guess), so I'm not trying to be rude... it's just that I'm fed up with hearing and reading about 'Andy this, Andy that' every damn time when Duran Duran releases new material. The man has nothing to do with this song and has had nothing to with this band for many years. Please stop! Not only you of course, but all of you 'bring back Andy' type of fans. Just give it a rest and enjoy their music, or not...
Be ok if lobon learned to stop shouting and started to actually sing!!!
They are my favorite band, but to be honest, I’m not wild about the first three songs. I enjoyed many songs on Paper Gods and All you need is now. I’ve always liked the less pop, darker side of Duran, hopefully those type of songs are there and just haven’t been heard yet.
I've liked everything new up to this. Although it's good, it's the sort of thing Simon could have written in his sleep! Duran Duran can do so, so much better!
This song will jam when played LIVE!!!
1- Not an electric drum - listen closely... He finaly plays acoustic drums after Paper Gods
2- They played the song live 2 days ago.. search on youtube
3- The Riff you would like Andy to play is very very similar to THE REFLEX guitar
Thanks for the review but really man what is the obsession with Andy Taylor. The guitarist left without explanation. He’s a great musician but a complete ass. He doesn’t belong with the band. He hates Nick Rhodes and can’t work well with the rest of the band. He’s done and gone
Synthesizer. Nick is synthesist. Yes, he used a keyboard but it's a synthesizer. 😉
Good song but the lack of a permanent guitarist really shows on the songs released so far from this album. Really longing for some chords. Too bad Warren won’t come back.

The major issue I have with the tracks off the album so far is the sound of the album. The way it’s mixed is way too much harsh middle. This especially stands out on this track with the chorus. It makes your ears bleed. This is such a shame to me and takes away from the enjoyment of the tracks.
For me Duran have never been as good since Warren left the band.
How do you listen to music?
@@RedMugMusic I’ve recently bought a nice pair of In Ear monitors with a dragonfly dac using Apple Music. I’ve always thought Duran albums sound mix has varied so much. Either from being too quiet (Big Thing). Too flat sounding (Liberty). But so far Future Past has way too much harsh treble. It may be the headphones I’m using. But compared to other bands I listen to, the mix on the tracks so far is really bugging me. I’ve always wondered if the band themselves have been happy with the sound on their albums. It takes away from their hard work/craft
Interesting…. I’m a huge music quality guy and I don’t think I’m hearing what you’re hearing. I’m using AirPods Pro. And my equalizer on my iPhone is set to ROCK. 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah I agree, not sure why but they levels seem pushed to the limit, esp the way he sings the lyric Anniversary. It's like over mastered or something. And I listened to it in a proudction studio on good speakers. Track sounds like it's going to explode,.
