Speaking of Piranha Bytes - they just closed the studio in silence. Piranha Bytes is no more.
That's....sad.
Some of the Veteran Piranha Bytes devs are making a new studio, Pithead.
Ah man, I didn't even realize. I wasn't crazy about ELEX 2 but I was still looking forward to seeing what they'd do next.
good. all they've ever done was middling to abysmal jank goop for their niche audience. I've always wondered how things were still afloat.
well, time of reckoning has come.
Hmm...
Embracer Group?
Embracer Group.
Wow, a cool looking open world survival crafting game in early access! I will definitely check it out 15 years later then it hit late beta version.
it's sad because when those games get interesting I already lost interest in playing them. Valheim is in a great place, but I played it so much that I can't enjoy it anymore. same for No Man's Sky, V-Rrising, and a few others. Palworld I played once to see what it was about and vouched to never touch it again until release so it's not another victim of me losing interest.
@@danilooliveira6580 Don't feel bad. You played those games and enjoyed them. Don't expect a game to fulfill your interest or be enjoyable forever, and you'll be a much happier gamer. Just enjoy playing the games for the sake of playing the games.
What is sad is that people get so obsessed with some games, that they want the game "to be infinite" and then turn into the most toxic entitled kind of people.
Just because a game developer wants their game to have a beginning and an end, doesn't mean it is bad, or that it cannot be enjoyed.
@@leoleo1035 have an updoot 🎉
Or never.
@@leoleo1035 alright, Leo. I think their point was they played the Early Access, losing interest in playing them further down the development line. Nothing to do with entitlement or wanting infinite experiences.
I'm addicted to this game since playing one of the betas. From those few 3rd person colony builders out there, this is one of the most immersive
"the flame of a thousand butane lighters" sounds like a series of books that i would read.
The main reason I shelved this game is because of the warehouse mechanics.
For example: You set up a workshop to create tools, tell it to create them until it has 2 of every tool. This works fine until you make a warehouse to actually store all of it. Once something is moved into the warehouse, it doesn't count towards the "until you have 2" number, which means your workshop villager will keep making tools until the warehouse is filled up, and also won't fill it up evenly so you might, for example, end up filling your warehouse up with hammers only even if you set to workshop to only maintain 2 hammers. And I haven't found any way to set limits on the warehouse or warehouse storage itself.
Another more long term problem is that many resources don't respawn, so that's going to be fun down the line.
This is the combination of genres that I wanted since playing Minecraft and learning that you have to enslave the villagers to get them to "work for you". The Forest 2 let me have one guy, but not a colony sim does that make. Can't wait for more to be added to this particularly niche of game genre mashup.
If you want to upgrade that aspect of Minecraft have a look at the MineColonies mod where you can build & upgrade your own village in a sort of similar way. I think ASKA might even be drawing some inspiration from there. The way you interact with the villagers, assign them, have them bring up issues etc. and the way the UI for it is laid out did at least give off that vibe.
"That's a rough tuggy" lol dude
I kinda liked it, but the ghouls just appearing beside your buildings and breaking them in 5 seconds, making you lose any materials that they contained gets annoying and old fast.
That's why you build walls, guard towers, have guards patrol the perimeter, etc. The first year can be challenging, specially the first winter, but after that you should have enough villagers to keep invaders in check, food stocked, materials gathered, weapons and armor crafted.
I was waiting for this game to be featured in the channel and finally it is here.
This game is more appealing to me than I imagined it would be in the first few minutes of the video.
some spoiler free words of advice for those that get the game, dont focus too heavily on your defenses until about day 10 then get a bunch of warriors because something happens between days 15-20
The AI will only do task if they have the tools for it. They all come with hammers, so they can build at the start. But without someone working the tool shed their tools will eventually wear out and they won't even build things. The reason you were stuck having to harvest logs, is because your wood harvester didn't have an upgraded ax.
Hm, I'm liking the look of this. Been kinda burned out on Valhiem and the very long grind, but I'm liking the colony management angle this has.
Jokes on you! I already wishlisted this game! Still gonna watch because Splat is a good fella 😊
You had me at Survival and locked it in with Viking!
Legend has it...
Man I lost it. The old rough tuggy Hilde. Gotta watch out for her
God dammmit that Idiocracy reference took me by surprise xD
wow, a game I know about, played, and am more experienced than Splat, will wonders never cease
oh shit, I wanted to see gameplay b4 I bought this, and low and behold splat to the rescue
Dont be silly im sure your the master of bait. From pure necessity 😂
The first test of any "Viking" game/movie/whatever is if they have horns on their helmets. If they have horns, it's fantasy Vikings, not real ones. It always surprises me how many games/whatever fall on that minor hurdle alone.
"Aska" means "ash" in Swedish, and likely in Danish and Norwegian also.
Aske in Danish, but close enough :)
@@Grogeous_Maximus Yeah, not much difference between our languages, specially in writing :)
I died in a crypt 4 days ago in Valheim, I'll never launch that thing again, I suck
stick with it valheims pretty good, its a bit grindy, upgrade your gear before you dungeon delve, i keep the skeleton spawners alive in crypts to farm bones
@@frogmastiff8198 Farm bones for what, you get about a million of them from, well, everywhere and can use them for like 4 things in the whole game.
While dying is annoying, its honestly a part of the game, a badly made part but a part none the less, i would say stay with it, only advice i can give is before you go back, in the menu where you select which world to play, go to "world modifiers" and double resource drop rate, makes grinding much much less a headache.
Dark Souls, I bare knuckle trolls.
the game is amazing.... ps. don't let the bear scare you off.
1. villagers will be builders unless you set them to work somewhere else.
2. everytime you sleep, you get a stamina buff that is very useful. shelter gives you minimal time with it, cottage gets you mid duration, Chief Hut gives you longest (so far)
3. ideally you want to setup semi-near a wolf den and a mine (iron is finite). there are 3 mines in every world seed that you generated.
4. Ragnar is more proficient with melee, aska is proficient at range combat
5. make a grid of harvest/stone/hunting/wood markers, for your villagers to go collecting
6. patrol markers/routes create a defensive parameter, utilize it effectively to not only secure your territory, but also keep your villagers happy
7. You need to harvest Jotun. your villagers will not.
8. eat onions, and garlic for early healing. build a healing hut asap.
9. builders will prioritize your pinned builds
the community for this game has been fantastic. so don't hesitate to aska question ;)
Jesus Spat! I was dying at the skin trophies part
Thanks for showcasing. ^^
A pack of Hungry Smokers is approaching? Get the snacks on the double!
@@homemacai doritos are clearly part of the dlc
actually interested because of how it reminds you of Piranha Bytes but as colomy surviver
UA-cam decides this game is Valheim 😁I wonder if they're relying on some video analysis for that or it's just the number of mentions of Valheim in the subtitles.
I'm not much into survival games but I'd definitely play one by Piranha Bytes, Gothic has the most charming jank in gaming... Also, ghoul-like creatures by the lake gives me The Witcher vibes!
When you upload the video there's a spot to choose which game it is. I assume he left it empty and it "heard" him say Valheim a few times in the beginning.
Some people do incorrectly tag as a more popular game on purpose to have a larger audience, but I doubt Splattercat does it since his whole shtick is new games.
Nah I just leave it blank and the website does some shit I don't understand and labels it wrong because half the games I cover aren't in the directory anyways.
@@Retanaru Ah, that'd explain it! I've seen many videos being miscategorized like that so it seems like an automated system, just wondering what's under the hood 😛 Definitely wouldn't think Splat does this on purpose!
@@Splattercatgaming It probably hears you mention valheim in the video, for example.
Splat, I don't understand why all of these people gotta be hating. I just finished the vid, and I could tell you weren't incredibly impressed by the game. Obviously, it's good enough to show to us, but there was nothing really outstanding about it. I agree that tutorialization should be integrated into game play in this day and age.
Your videos have been part of my daily routine for years, the first thing i watched in the morning, and still do. I just finished this one around midnight PST because I was at work for about 14 hours. Thank you for grinding every day to give me this time of solace from a crazy world.
I appreciate that you always keep it real.
Piranha Bites sadge
Played over 120 hours of the demo, kept replaying to see if I could beat my score each time. Have now played another 270 hours since early access just love it and there is no hand holding.
This game looks great
looks great
Woah caught it in the first 12 seconds
Looks like budget William from home.
Thanks, Splatt.
Great thumbnail
I think those little critters were the smolkrs. They sneak in and steal your food or something.
It says 1080p, but it looks pretty bad. Low bit rate? UA-cam codec can't handle detailed grass?
dense grass makes compression fail miserably. this game is 90% grass, hence terrible video quality. nothing splat can do much about, sadly.
Looks like frame generation artifacts to me
UA-cam codec hates grainy games with anti-aliasing :/
Wait till the first bear attack got you. You'll rage quit. haha! Enjoy the game.
Maybe you should make a smoking shelter and pizza van for the hungry smokers. Then they won't attack lol.
This game's definitely got some weirdness in it, one that I can't really put my finger on what's causing it, but It's a very nice viking colony managing game
Yeah am in getting this game soooo quick
Yay a game you can’t convince me to buy, because I already own it.
Every time a survival game comes out I hope it'll be a more streamlined, polished Ark.
I tried the demo, it was fun and I can't wait to see what they will do with it
"I don't actively know what I should be doing next" - Yup... This game is almost rogue-lite in that each play through you learn to increase the micro management efficiency so as not to actively brick a run (entirely possible since resources like Iron are finite). I won't bother trying to explain but you'll start figuring things out (like the most important item in the world is f#cking rope...) as you watch your runs fall apart.
I've put this one aside for now because I do want to enjoy it when it get's more mature, and I just end up hating each run more and more as they go along...
It has some good animations.
The weapons/tools mechanic seems to be like medieval dynasty. The latest on the tech tree should way stronger and be more resilient. But hey, at least you don't need to equip your villager with tools with low durability ^^.
excellent!
Well, you said the magic words.
Tell me a game reminds you of the Gothic series and you've got my attention.
Does everything seem like there's an almost always on Motion Blur? It's most prevalent while moving. Perhaps Depth of Field?
gonna have to agree on the tools durability... the only time I've ever found myself going "ok, durability makes perfect sense" is when it's an automation game because it encourages you to have something make more for you... which given you have villagers, might be why they went that route here? but not having a tool to repair them is honestly a no go for me. having to worry about replacing each individual tool constantly was annoying in Minecraft, and that was with lots of inventory space and super easy to make tools, I can't imagine how much worse it would be here.
What happened to the Mortal Sin video?
Eh... I don't think I've ever really enjoyed a survival crafting game. So I know it's not for me, but I just don't see how there's so much desire for another one. I feel like every big super hyped indie game that comes out these days is this style of game. There was that Fairy regency era game, Enshrouded, Bell ringer I think it's name was. And a few others I know I'm forgetting about.
But they all seem to have about the same level of content, there really doesn't seem to be one that's super far advanced in content than any other.
Maybe I'm cynical, maybe I just don't understand the genre, but I don't get why these kind of games keep blowing up lol. Either way, love the vids Splat, keep it up!
This game looks great av been waiting for anything that resembles rim world with these kind of graphics coz a just can't play rim world man need legs man at a bare minimum
DIVE ON IN!
Roger's Place
Are there any other finished games like this
thanks
Nothing turns me off a game faster than "Viking".
Same, and I'm even Scandinavian. It's a pass for me, and still just hype for Nightingale, if they ever finish patching it.
Hey Splat, any plans to upgrade to a higher resolution?
All hail to the NerdKing. How does this compare to Soulmask?
"What? What do you want?" Excellent
Did they fix the tedious raids in this game, if not this game is really not worth sinking your time into, The harder Raids only start from day 18 onwards.
love the game, probably the best survival sim. For early access there is a TON of game there, already 50 hours in and I haven't even tried any of the bosses yet
Sounds like a lot like the game Soulmask.
Nearly died of boredom watching things harvest. I'm so over needing to pause to catch breath 8 times and breaking an axe twice in chopping down a tree as a mechanic. I live on top of a hill and up multiple flights of stairs, I don't need an out-of-breath simulator in my life thanks.
The major problem with this one is that it's competing against Enshrouded, and Enshrouded looks like it's a better game... but still a solid title.
The plural of draugr is...draugr.
Draugreses?
Do yourself a favor. Change the "Z" key "Ubisoft vision" to the middle mouse button that it unused. So much easier to spam as often as you will use it.
Copper Ore? There is Zero Copper Ore in the Game Splat... its Iron XD
Bait is crafted from fish meat, red meat, or berries in the tools menu. Villagers not assigned to a job are builders by default.
You must have skipped reading a few of the popups.
This game is..... eh. It doesn't do anything new, interesting, or innovative. It needs some serious balance as you'll go through hundreds of vegetables and lots of water when you get around 5 villagers. It gets a thumbs up as I'm partial to the Viking aesthetic.
It greatly suffers from tedium and wasting time, pretty sure devs balanced the game to be used in max multiplayer + NPC manpower, like Splattercat said it sucks that tools degrade, and they degrade FAST.
You need at least 6 NPCs to get a base that doesn't need you to babysit everything and waste time on pointless busywork.
Need 1 NPC to collect wood, 1 to collect stone, 1 to collect food, 1 builder to repair buildings, 1 to craft materials, 1 to craft tools.
AND BUILDINGS DEGRADE SUPER FAST
Even slight damage to your buildings will become expensive and your building disabled until repaired, rain and wind degrade buildings too quickly for NPCs to maintain.
Not a fan of the survival games going down the road of civilization sims. I don't mind a little managing at home base but having to tuck everyone in at night makes it less fantasy and more of the life I'm trying to escape to in fantasy games.
I think Piranha bytes closed recently 😭😭
Ive played this for about 23 hours and there is a lot of polish needed. There are some incredibly sloppy things like your Sprint animation giving you weird chicken feet to you not holding your tools properly when you chop down trees, but the worst offender is the incredibly ugly main character models lol.
That said, the game is 'fine'.
But this game needs some love from the devs, it's early access so this is the time to complain to get things changed. lol
Does this game have spiders in it? My girlfriend has acute arachnophobia, so we're always looking for coop games that are safe to play together.
I played for like 4 hours and didn't see any but not sure.
I thought this was a fake game
Same. Still wary for now.
I played hours of this. If they keep it up it'll be a great game
I'd let this one cook for a while if I was y'all. Unless you like beating your head against a brick wall and wonder why you're getting no where...
🖤
No people would write it off because it's 'just another survival craft bla bla bla game'. Market saturation is the problem, and it needs to bring something different.
Performance looks awesome. Valheim ran like bootyhole for me.
People must really enjoy chopping trees and making stone tools. I don't get the appeal. In theory, I love crafting, base building, and survivalism in games but it's rarely, if ever, implemented well.
picking up flax has a timer? that's not good. that game is stalling the player to pile up more game time and fake up that it is good. Maybe other aspects are really good, but timers and loading bars to perform actions are a bad thing.
oh boy another survival game how great
Hitting rocks and trees is so exciting!
I'm not big on survival games but I gsve this one a shot because of the villagers management.
Don't care for survival games, but still nice
this demo sucked me in. "lets try it out". 3 hours later. oh shit I have to go to bed.. yeah, near carbon copy of Valhiem.. but, with some great village building.
This is giving me heavy Last Oasis vibes
Soooo no character creation? Always a pass for me in that case.
There is character creation, to clarify. I missed it when I was recording. You can also be a dude if you want.
@@Splattercatgaming Ohhh that's good to know. I'll see if I can find any info on how in depth it is. Thanks for the clarification, Splat!
Can the Viking aesthetics just stop can we get something new?
A viking game with no Norse font??
I tried the demo and got immediately annoyed at the combat, I love survival games but I think we really need to have at least bare minimum quality combat instead of clunky mediocre crap. It's really disappointing every time. That said, the game does look pretty interesting for the colony survival part.
The tutorialising you skipped through at the start of the video explains that villagers are always builders unless they're assigned to another task. If I ever fulfill my dream of becoming a game developer, you are one of the many types of player who I will find exasperating, always skipping tutorials and refusing to read anything, then wondering what's going on.
If you build your game right, you don’t need tutorials.

Survival crafting and souls like are a hard pass for me at this point.
i did try to like Valheim but the graphics, man they were so off putting i could not enjoy it for more than hour. Best of luck to developers on this project.
Maybe I am the only one but I have no idea how valheim can be so popular. Not really a survival game, the story is poor, missions repetetive. Whenever I read VH-inspired, I run.
Are hell noooo the white lines are soooo bad and way more imergian breaking
I've tried valheim multiple times solo and I find it super boring. Not sure what the hype around that game is - only an opinion.
