I've gotten to the point on my loc journey that I've accepted the fact my hair is going to do whatever it wants. Like in the beginning I was trying to control how my locs looked and they were like TUHH you thought. I'm currently 9 months right now and they have definitely come a long way!!!!
Locks grow like vines. Just guide them and let them do what they want in that bracket. The journey is beautiful just except it. It’s the same for free hair.
This is good advice.👏👏 I think one of the problems with starting over is that you always seem to compare your new set to the old set of locs. There's just something about the mind that only remembers the good about things that we no longer have so we end up comparing our present struggles to the few "good hair days" we had with the old set and most people end up regretting starting over as a result.
You are so right! I combed out my last set of locs reminiscing about the “good hair days” of being a loose natural. I totally romanticized detangling 🤣 I was lost in Regret City! 6 months later I stared my current set and I just hit my 1 yr anniversary 🥰
I'm not combing mine out unless something goes dreadfully wrong. I tried locking 5yrs ago and combed them out around 6wks in and have regretted it ever since. I would have locs down my back by now if I had kept moving forward. Won't be going back again lol. Whatever I have this time will be what I have. Fortunately, I love them so far.
I'm in love with my loc's. I understand that you must love them to be one with them. I think of them as roots, and how beautiful these flowers will be.. My hair is a pot of roses ⚘⚘..I water them, feed them, talk to them, we are friends😄.
I considered combining my locs about 4 months in because they weren’t as thick as i wanted them to be but i trusted the process and I’m glad I did. I’m 16 months loc’d and I’m in love ❤️
Great video! Glad this was addressed. I've seen people restart their journeys 3 or 4 times, getting the same type of locs, but changing the parting. I think the thought to start over crosses all of our minds at some point. My locs definitely formed thinner than I thought they would since I have fine hair, but I'm almost 3 years in and I'm in love with them! Have no intentions of starting over or cutting them off for the rest of my life!
This is my second journey first started with loc extensions (which I hated) due to a lot of different reasons. This journey I’ve learned to love my natural hair which is so freeing. Two weeks of being loc’d for a year. I love it an value my locs, embracing the fizz!!
GIRL! Lemme tell you that you is right on time! I’m 5months in and I’m waiting for these babies to get thicker! I love them but, also I have a couple of flat locs and I didn’t even know that was a THING until I saw another woman’s video. I’m giving it a year and you just helped me push because I was about to be bald and starting from THE tiz-naeeeeee! 😭😂 I have no certain grid pattern because I didn’t want them uniform.
Thank you so much for this video! I was lucky to find you right when I started my locs (we’re two months apart) and I don’t think ppl understand how important it is to find folks on yt who have a similar texture to yours so you aren’t comparing or being unrealistic about your journey. This happened during my natural hair journey too when I expected my hair to look like the girls with thick natural hair and that was just not my story. I have fine hair and getting locs did not change that. I want ppl to focus more on healthy hair and stop following these loc influencers who you cannot relate to. You do not need to start over unless you’re making drastic changes to the type of locs! Spend that time and energy getting to know and get comfortable with what you have vs. what you “think you want” based on what someone else has. Loving this twist out dae! Hope you’re enjoying the winter break!
I'm 2 months in to my loc journey, and I have really been debating on starting over. After watching this I decided I'm gonna see it through. I really needed this, thank you!
I was 2 months 1 week and five days it and my locs were starting to form and bud. I decided to go with micro locs and separated each one into 2. I’m glad I did. Now my locs are full & I’m so glad I did. .
*Great* advice! This is my 3rd set of locs simply because I just was not happy with my first two sets. I tried to just stay a loose natural for a while but after 6 months in, I couldn't take it and started this set. Here we are 11 months in and the size is perfect and so is the health of my hair (I big chopped before I started this set).
I had my first set of locs for 7 years and decided i wanted microlocs. I combed them out and then realized it wasn’t worth it and just reinstalled traditional locs but i have 20 more now. I say don’t comb them out ever unless u just don’t want them period. I’m happy with my new set but combing out my first set brought about a pain i don’t want to ever experience again
You motivate me so much I have 54 locs I always thought I should shave my head cause they are a few but when I see your hair I’m like wow let me do this 🥰
I’m so glad I found you video! Because I’m 2-3 months and now wanting to start over because it seems I don’t have enough locs, it’s not as full as I want them to be. I have about 50 locs and I have very fine 4c hair.
Thank you for this video! Really helpful. I stay combing mine out and starting over due to Loc counts and comparing other ppl loc journeys. I’m learning to just let go and embrace my own hair and love my hair for what it is! ❤️
Oh my Goddddd! This message is so key! I identify so much with this! I’m now 2wks away from being a year loc’d and faced this a lot in my first 5 months (and still do in a way). I was so hung up on the size of my locs and giving myself grief over the way I parted and not following a stronger parting system. In unwittingly comparing my hair to others online, I did myself a great disservice and I came to think that if I had a greater quantity of locs that my hair would look fuller (i.e. “better”) so I combed a few out to raise my loc count (& like u said, it didn’t do that much of a difference). I ended up combining back two and am considering doing the same to a couple more. I’m now deciphering whether it’s best to leave well enough alone or to try to “undo” what I did, and really looking at my motivations in both cases. Any feedback is appreciated and thank you so much for putting this out there!
Lol this may not be the feedback you're looking for, but I am resonating with your story. I had my hair loc'd 2 days ago 🙈, and I want to cry every time I look at the mirror. They're quite thick, but very few. Most def not the volume I was hoping for. I just feel like chopping them off and starting over, because wtf 😣
Thank you for this! I was literally contemplating if I wanted to restart my locs to have a fuller look but now that I know it depends on my hair type, Ima keep it how it is! It’s still growing and flowing 💁🏾♀️
New to Locs, 1 month in a lot of budding and frizzing and its crazy!!! I was thinking of taking out. But this video encouraged me to let mi hair do her thang!!!
Eh… I started over. I didn’t have an issue. I combed my locs out completely and started over months later. I think it depends on the health of your hair before you were locked and the maintenance of your hair. Like you said, If you haven’t dyed it to oblivion, then it will probably be fiiine. And hair texture also plays a part. I feel like softer textures unlock with the least trauma to the hair.
I was days away from being 2 years Loc’d and I combed them out only because I bleached my hair so many times that it became thin. I dyed my hair back black after combing them out and I’m about to get starter locs all over again. You have some great advice about why you shouldn’t and I would’ve never combed them out if I hadn’t bleached them I loved all stages of my hair.
Best thing to do is stop comparing your hair to others. I started my own locs 7 years ago just by grabbing and twisting; I went bald a few years prior and had a few inchessss. No parts, no nothing. LoL. Hair down my back. Maybe I’ll get rid of them, maybe I won’t. Either way, I love my hair!
I started my locs over because the first set had too much product in them. So they were heavy and messy looking to me because of the gel. This set I'm using oil and water mostly. This set looks nothing like the first set
I needed to hear this. I’m 18 months into my second set. A lot of my locs are flat, due to my parting and fine texture, which I don’t mind for the most part. I semi freeform and find them unique and pretty. One on top is more flat and thin than others though. I fear it’ll get weaker as time goes on. Combining it won’t work to my liking (then it’ll be too big). Maybe if I comb out several in a section and redo them, I can find a way that works, but that’s a lot of work and risk. I am 18 months in and going to try to give it until I reach two years to decide if I need to restart. If I do, I may just got to a shop since I struggled with getting the section right each time (I actually had a set for a few days, but don’t count it). I really don’t wanna do this again 😩. Edit: I just combed out the weak flat one and twisted and crocheted it to a neighbor. Ima keep an eye on it, but I think it’s gonna work out! 😁
You sound so much like me . I’m 18 months in and I told myself to give it to two years . I hear that’s when they’re fully mature , & hopefully the decision to comb out or keep will be clearer .
Im ten weeks in in 2 days. I wanted my curls out and my loC T says to comb the ends out. They try to loc so fast im not gonna bother with it anymore, it's to much. I have 3 a- b hair. Some of.my locs look crazy lol. Some.look like butterfly knots in the middle of the hair. I wanted at least 80locs and ended op with like 57. LoC T said i had about 80. Naw not even.. so I made 3 more to have at least 60. Thank you so much for for the video. I was about to be in my feelings abiut diamond oarts and thinking i eanted straight to have more locs. TRUST THE PROCESS so thats what im doing❤
Thank you for this. My locks look nothing like my first year or the beginning of my second year. At almost 2.5 years. The lock is finally consistent and actually locks on its own--A huge surprise. I don't use products and wash 1x month. I only separate the hairs that marry. No re-twisting. After 2.5 years they are somwhat tame 😉. Btw: I decided I was going to love them, no matter how they turned out. And I genuinely love my locks.
I needed to hear this. I'm 2 1/2 months into my loc journey and want to combine out the top to fix my parts. I see most have a center part and the loc styles look more versatile with the center part. I don't have the nice neat parts at the top. Thanks for this video because now I'm ok with letting it do what it do.
Thanks! I am 11 weeks in and have been thinking about starting over because I want less locs. I have 89 and "thought" I wanted medium locs but love big locs. I think I'm going to leave them alone and if I decide years later to do less I will have someone combine them. Nice video.
Absolutely beautifully addressed sis! This video should be required viewing for newbies so that they can be encouraged to go with the flow and that it will be ok!
I needed this! I am 14 months in and have fine, low density hair. My perimeter locs are NOT looking how I want it to be! I started w/61 and I’m down to 55 😢 I might just cut it back to my twa bc it’s growing like crazy but I hate it’s SO thin!
Happy Blessed Sunday morning Dae from Houston TX. I absolutely love your hair. I’m 14 months in. 65 yrs old today 🙏🏽👏🏽🙌🏽 I want to dye all these dang gray hairs on the edges and roots. My hair has reached a passed my neck line, 4C. Not sure if I want to go bold with bleach or just a mile dye like a brown or something. I also you like it cut/ layer. My hair grows slow plus I really don’t want it real long anyway. Have you ever cut your locs????
I like your density of locs. I would wonder why people would proudly announce that they have 87 locs and start d to feel concern because I don't have that many locs but I'm enjoying the journey of the loc transition.
Your commentary is on point! I really needed to hear this! I have a strong feeling that others do too. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! Lemme turn on my notifications rn!
I’m in my 5th month and I am really considering restarting because my parting was a bit off. I diy-ed and got tired at a point and parted at random. I want to start again because one side of my hair is fuller and the back is flat😭 At first I was like, I don’t care, but I do. So I want to take them out and go to a braider to help me install the two strand twist properly and uniformly.
I have microlocs and I redid the whole back of my head because I started on a tapered cut and I was SO self conscious about the length! I did loc extensions and ended up taking them out. I didn’t like the size and partying so I had to do something or I was never going to like them! I have a love hate relationship with them. Should have done traditional locs 🤷🏾♀️
I am 21 months loc'd and I never had the desire to cut my locs off and start again but if I did I would have to remember the baby loc phase and use that to make me reconsider. I absolutely HATED that stage. I hated how short they were and I hated the awkward stage. They did what they wanted and didn't listen to me and I definitely couldn't go through that again. I'm surprised I made it our without ripping my locs out but miraculously I did and I would never wish that experience even on my worst enemy.
I started mine 03/14/20 and combed out in February of 21 cause I got tired of everything (being in the house cause of the pandemic) I took a combed to most of head especially my edges and with all that hair coming out, I instantly regretted it! I saved most of head and just turned them into 2strands and going through the process. I'm embracing the process slightly better than I did before hacking my hair
After a full year, Combing mine out was the best decision I don’t miss them at all. I hated them the whole process and they actually looked nice I just didn’t want them
Girl thank you cause I'm over here going crazy over my loc count. I know I can have more but it still may not be the look I want. There needs to be more representation for us for whatever reason have less then 100.
I will be 2 years on Mar. 20, the reason I be wanting to comb out mine sometimes, is because this two strand pattern is NOT going anywhere. Honestly, they look like frizzy two strand twist. I don’t know🤷🏽♀️, if I do I will definitely do coils the next time
I started mine over for the second time but the first time I only had them in for six days i just wasn’t ready I do believe that I had more locks before and knowing what I know now i always think I liked that other set of locs more but I didn’t have them long enough to know but this journey is a lot better I am 15 months locd and loving every second of it
Thank you for this video!!! I needed to hear these points. I am 18 months in & my hair is pretty thick & locked but so uneven! Some dreads are smaller/thinner than others. Some are super thick, some are in the middle. I just want them even. It’s frustrating & I’ve been pretty much free forming this whole time. Only gotten about 4 retwist in these 18 months. I also have very bad dandruff that I feel is harder to manage than when I had my natural hair. The only reason why I got dreads is bc I hated doing my natural hair & I hated sitting for hours just to get it done but I’m noticing with my dreads it’s just as hard to manage. I thought dreads were the easy/lazy way out. Lol but I do love them!! Ughhh I’m so torn on what to do 😭😭😭
I'm in the same boat with you different size locs and parts after i told my loctician how I wanted my hair.. I'm really considering cutting my locs half way then I might take them down.
Thanks so much for this video, I’m only one week in and was already thinking about combing everything out and starting over because of my loc count lmao
I want to comb mines out because of the energy of the persons that did it and I was homeless when I started and I don’t want that to be the reason why I started locs. I’m two year in my loc journey and I want to wear my hair a certain way
Glad I came across this video, damn sure was about to comb mines out, 8 months in.. I have lil afro's 🙄 of hair throughout my scalp, some are thicker than others. I have 67, I interlock, I'mma try to wait it out.
At 18 months in, I liked the look that I had, but I combed mine out to consolidate them. I had more than 150 locks, and now, I have around 75. And then I saw a video on African styles. So, I'm experimenting with threading my locks for protection. It's called Yoruba Kiko. And MY HEAD WAS DISGUSTING WHEN I TOOK THEM OUT.
I've had my locs for almost 3 months. I have major budding and locn. I love the way my locs look. My only issue is the middle of my head in the back I have huge parts and I wanted to know your opinion is there a way to split those ones into 2.
My locs are perfectly fine. I’m in month 9 and they’re thick and hardening. I was really focused on my parts but it’s not worth it to start over just for that.
I have 42 Locs N it my second set only because I want thick loc. my first set as you can in the pic they were to small and way to much Locs so they started to thin. I have very soft hair and my edges are naturally thin. This time I start with instant Locs and I hope they are thick if not oh well I don’t plan on starting over .
Already set my mind on cutting mine. I want better parting, sizing, etc. but I’ve been coming across the idea to comb it out, and thinking about combing it out. But I have some damaged locs, some skinny roots and I don’t think it’ll make sense to comb it just for me to cut it.
My hair was so damaged but I had to start over. I cut my hair and as soon as it was long enough started then again. If I wouldn’t have bleach it so often I would’ve kept them but I didn’t like the size or parts either. My original loctician didn’t follow directions so I wanted to start over since day one anyway and of course I took 6 years. I’m 2 months locd now and wish I still had them 6 years/length
i’m only combing out and starting over cause the lady who did my starters didn’t part my shirt right she just placed my locks all over lmfao i love my hair cause my current loctician be getting right but i asked if she could redo my locs over and she pretty much begged me to do so she can get right lmao she said they will look a lot better and clean with nice straight even parts
I’m 14 weeks loc’d and the only reason I want to start over is because the woman who started them for me, the back parting is bigger than the front. My edges in particular is really driving me nuts because they’re noticeably smaller. I feel like I should’ve just started them myself. But I don’t know, I’m trying to stick it out.
It'll get better 😁 My twists were like that too, I remember them just sticking up some days no matter what I did. But they did eventually fall and became more tame as the months went by
Yea, I have to start my locs over! I’m really annoyed by it. With my small head, I am almost for certain they will look a lot fuller & most amazing with smaller parts.
I'm three years loc'd and the longer they get it's like my roots are getting thin compared to my locs. I have very fine hair I never thought my hair would loc. I want to cut mine and restart them so bad. I wish I had thick hair, but I love my locs
I was so in love with my four year old locs until I decided to brush them as advised by a loc influencer. Worse mistake of my life. Brushing my locs loosened and weakened the integrity of my hair. Now I find myself attempting to repair them with a loc which is causing further damaged. I’m am loosing the look that locs have when they naturally loc. Think I am going to start over.
This is my second time. I lost my first set due to radiation. I’m 13 months in this time and at the length I was at the first time, this set just isn’t as neat with bud bumps down a lot of my locs and I have really bad ocd and it bothers me. So I want to start all over for the neater look, because I know I can have that look, I’ve had it before.
I was about to comb my locs out and start over.. then I saw this video.. I’ve always wanted my locs to look full. I’m not happy with the parts. I have a few locs where you can tell the stylist rushed and you can tell one loc could have been two.. but I’m also afraid that combing out the locs will force my hair to fall out and my hair would be so thin that getting my locs back wouldn’t happen
I’m thinking about restarting mine because like in my crown area there’s a lot of space open between my locs. I’m lowkey concerned, I love them truly I’m just concerned about my crown area.
Who’s awake? Lol
Me! Cali time.
@@rhondaferguson697 ok Cali! I need to make my way over there lol
Me! Glad to have this surprise late night video lol
Hey lovely. Im sure you're sleeping now..
I've gotten to the point on my loc journey that I've accepted the fact my hair is going to do whatever it wants. Like in the beginning I was trying to control how my locs looked and they were like TUHH you thought. I'm currently 9 months right now and they have definitely come a long way!!!!
I'm, 16 months in and I agree with you. I had to learn, Locs take on a Life Of Itself 😊
Locks grow like vines. Just guide them and let them do what they want in that bracket. The journey is beautiful just except it. It’s the same for free hair.
This is good advice.👏👏 I think one of the problems with starting over is that you always seem to compare your new set to the old set of locs. truth!!!
I'm not combing mine out unless something goes dreadfully wrong. I tried locking 5yrs ago and combed them out around 6wks in and have regretted it ever since. Yesss! I always say that lol it’s why I tell people to just start because you can be sooo much further in your journey

I also have many flat ones due to my partin 😔 It's a shame but I'll just live with it..
You sound so much like me . I’m 18 months in and I told myself to give it to two years . I hear that’s when they’re fully mature , & hopefully the decision to comb out or keep will be clearer .
Im ten weeks in
in 2 days.
Locs have crazy energy love how mine look in all the phases love y’all
To us who like before watching🥂😅😍.
Love all the way from 🇿🇦❤️
I needed to hear this.
I started w/61 and I’m down to 55 😢
I might just cut it back to my twa bc it’s growing like crazy but I hate it’s SO thin!
Love your crinkle locks. Nice!
I combed my small traditional locs out after7 years. Have had loose hair for about 4 months. Now i am starting over with microlocs.
I’m at month 11 and it’s still puffed up in the shower. Not fully matured but I’m down for the journey. I love it 😍. It’s so freeing having locs.
This is very helpful. Hair texture makes a huge difference!
I’m in my 5th month and I am really considering restarting because my parting was a bit off.
I diy-ed and got tired at a point and parted at random.
I want to start again because one side of my hair is fuller and the back is flat😭
At first I was like, I don’t care, but I do.
So I want to take them out and go to a braider to help me install the two strand twist properly and uniformly.
I needed to hear this today. Thank you!!
Love this. Cus hunny this hair is doing what it wants to do. Month 4. No type of act right.
😂😂 the rebellious stage gotta love it. Mine was hard too but I cheated and wore wigs lol
Your right ✅ an I have low hair density, so I accept that. But I'm beginning to love my locs 😌
I loc'd my hair up 2 days ago, and this is reassuring. Thank you.
It will take 6 months to a year for your hair to "loc"
I did instant locs
How do you feel about yours now just curious?
I love black women with locs 😍😍😍
Great video hair density no body talks about one
I have 42 Locs N it my second set only because I want thick loc. my first set as you can in the pic they were to small and way to much Locs so they started to thin. I have very soft hair and my edges are naturally thin. This time I start with instant Locs and I hope they are thick if not oh well I don’t plan on starting over .
I’m combing mine out because I want the parts the be more even. They were not done properly
I really needed this. I’m just over two months loc’d and I just did my first retwist… I hate it😭 but I’m trusting the process🤞🏽
Please hang in there!! It’ll be worth it
@@daelocs😊🤞🏽
Patience...
Already set my mind on cutting mine. I want better parting, sizing, etc. but I’ve been coming across the idea to comb it out, and thinking about combing it out. But I have some damaged locs, some skinny roots and I don’t think it’ll make sense to comb it just for me to cut it.
Mine is 18months and I just picked them out. Gonna keep my hair for a few months then go to the barber
Starting over now for micro locs just took out my traditionals
My hair was so damaged but I had to start over. I cut my hair and as soon as it was long enough started then again. If I wouldn’t have bleach it so often I would’ve kept them but I didn’t like the size or parts either. My original loctician didn’t follow directions so I wanted to start over since day one anyway and of course I took 6 years. I’m 2 months locd now and wish I still had them 6 years/length
The first time my hair got thick to the size I wanted. Now they are that size and I fear these will be too thick when they “grow up”
Excellent Information!! Love this video!
Also you’re so pretty 😍 and so are your locs. What’s the secret to keep those edges down?
Thanks for this video. Very encouraging
i’m only combing out and starting over cause the lady who did my starters didn’t part my shirt right she just placed my locks all over lmfao i love my hair cause my current loctician be getting right but i asked if she could redo my locs over and she pretty much begged me to do so she can get right lmao she said they will look a lot better and clean with nice straight even parts
I'm still in the twists phase of my starter locs and my hair's already doing whatever it wants😭
It'll get better 😁 My twists were like that too, I remember them just sticking up some days no matter what I did. But they did eventually fall and became more tame as the months went by
Everything you said was very legit ✨
Great advice ❤️🧡
Yea, I have to start my locs over! I’m really annoyed by it. With my small head, I am almost for certain they will look a lot fuller & most amazing with smaller parts.
I'm three years loc'd and the longer they get it's like my roots are getting thin compared to my locs. I have very fine hair I never thought my hair would loc. I want to cut mine and restart them so bad. I wish I had thick hair, but I love my locs
You look gorgeous 😍. I love your lashes.
I am 10 months in..accepting the challenge.and the journey..not combing out my locs..
I appreciate this advice.
Your eyebrows are beautiful. Are they microbladed? What products do you use? I’m obsessed with them 😍.
My main issue is that my parts were done with zero consistency and some of my locs are way thicker than others
Love this video thank you so much.
Yo locs are dope😉
Can you show us more pictures of your prior loc journey ?
I needed this thank you
I needed this video .. thank you ☺️
I want to comb mines out because I don’t like the parts
Beautiful locs. 😍. I just want to know what you have on your lips 💋. I love love the look.
I have 52-55 I know I have around same as you, I want to start over because I feel I want more number of locs. Didn't it look fuller with more?
You answered my question because I think we have same type of hair. But I would love to your last set with more locs
Same boat, my locs look really thin rn and my parts are big in certain areas, my head is big😭 I know what I want and this isn’t satisfying me
Nope! Just cut them! I comb mine out and most of hair came out. It’s better to cut and start over
I kinda wish I kept mine. Had the for 1 year but I love my fro too much. Plus I was so ugly with them....definitely not for me
I LOVE THIS VIDEO, THANKS 😊
I’m thinking about restarting mine because like in my crown area there’s a lot of space open between my locs. I’m lowkey concerned, I love them truly I’m just concerned about my crown area.
