I always loved and wanted locs but my husband had a misconception of it and always told ,me that I wouldn’t look right with them. Well, I’m going through a divorce and I’m happy to say I have my locs and got rid of him for trying to control me and I’m free of him and my hair is finally free.

Jamaican Ratafarians fought hard for the acceptance and approval of locs by society. They were killed, stereotyped, criticised, beaten, jailed and laughed at for years. My mom used to tell me about a dark time when Rastas where lined up and killed, home terrorized, family and children made fun of because the society influence by slavery and England beliefs didn't accept it.
Reading this gave me chills. Anytime I think about these aspects of our history it causes a deep sense of sorrow. Our ancestors understood their mission, I hope we do ours too
Yes I have locs. The first time I locked my hair was after my sister's death in 2002. I kept them until I felt my grief was settled. Now I have them again. Lost my mother to Covid in 2020. I grew them again in 2020. For me it's a spiritual journey. They comfort me, they remind me of nature. They grow just like I do in many ways. They are healing. This journey with my locs may be longer. I lost a very special person and relationship, my mom. Thank you for the opportunity to share.

I have free-formed locks. You're right that it builds self-acceptance and confidence. A whole lot of black people who were once my friends used to talk down on them. Now that my locks have bloomed, they are left with sand in their mouths. lol.

Growing up, i was taught locs were seen as “nasty” or looked “dirty”…. As an adult today I can say I’m super excited about starting my loc journey! It has been a challenging journey maintaining my natural hair but I’ve grown to embrace it. 10 years ago i would’ve never wore my hair in a bun & in 2022 I wear buns EVERYDAYYYYYY FAITHFULLY🥰🥰🥰
@@luxejohnnah nobody is ignorant it sometimes kinda does the condition they have it in, for example someone doesn’t do basic loc maintenance and has dirty locs and lots of buildup of dirt and other things.
My three kids and I are all loc'd. I'm 14 years in, my daughter is almost three years in on her second set, my oldest son is a year in, and my youngest son is 10 months in. One of the best decisions I ever made.
Loved this video! But the discomforts were not necessarily explained enough. I just want to inform everyone that your locs and edges will only thin if you do not maintain them correctly. (Aside from medical or genetic instances) And the same goes for them falling out. This can be due to you constantly restyling them, not protecting them properly (items such as dreadsocks and satin pillow cases are highly recommended) putting too much tension on them, and re-twisting them too often and or extremely tight. Also, the only thing you need, and the most basic supplies you can use to maintain your locs are literally oil, washing products (shampoo and depending on preference, conditioner) and water. It is basically free to a couple dollars to maintain locs. I hope everyone is enjoying their journey and if you thought about having locs, I highly recommend it. We all love it here. 15yrs in would've been 22yrs but my grandma would always make me cut them when report cards came out 🥺😂 and yep, we had them back when we was considered as thugs and hoodlums but we was able to fuck any girl we want and now the world got them 💪🏾💯

@@TheDirector_ Sorry, for the answer. Had to cut it off because I was at the hospital for one whole months last year. I was doing Free form, so I got a castor tail. I am celt, so my vision is like ""forest caveman"", according to the origin'al garden. Meaning That I wanted to relive what my ancestors did, when the cold was insane from autumn to end of spring 9/12 months per years, plus heavy rain in summer. I would say like a snowy mountain in africa before. Mountains lion, for example, from the atlas, they were full of fur to the tail and black. Like chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, they have a huge quantity of fur, cold friendly. So I grew my hair from 2003 and 2012, I stopped shampoo and 2016 no brushing. My hair went from just above the knee, in one year to shoulder length matted. This was everything I wanted, excepted that I should have wash them a bit to avoid for the sebum to stack up so much in the middle of my tail. So beginning of 2022, the castor tail was 4 centimeters THICK ( was harder than leather ) and the length was just above my kidneys. The smell was awful and I began to let myself go like a wheat junky and you know what came after. So I want to restart but with more conditioning to avoid the horrible smell. Maybe it's just about the food, clean lean meat and greens and veggies only, no cereals or dairy or too much fat, oil. In winter, my spine was at body temperature, so hermetic to the cold and even heat and a nice body armour. I miss my castor tail sooo much. 😭 And ofc, I hate what the humankind is doing to the Garden. We could have the same technology without this worldwide waste and destruction.... I want my forests back. And you ☺ now ? Sorry for my french ☺
I LOVE LOCS!!!!!! Got rid of relaxers, combs, conditioners, etc. Someone I was dating asked me “are you ever gonna take those out or do they come out and I told him with passion absolutely not, EVER! “. Had a family member tell me locs are for men and I asked him to show me that in the Bible of course he couldn’t. Just close to being natural works best for me it’s low maintenance it’s clean they’re beautiful. Hang in there people of locked hair we are going to overcome this prejudice.

I have had 4 sets of locs and can’t see myself rocking anything else. I went to primary school with a Rastafarian family and all I wanted was for my hair to look like theirs. My mother put a relaxer at my hair at age 4, and as soon as I turned 16 I shaved all my hair off and never looked back. Locs for life!
I love that Locs have a rich history and a lot of us "loc up" for different reasons. The biggest reason is that we've come to LOVE our natural hair. That matters!

I started my Locs 12 years ago when my sister was dying from breast cancer, I wear my Locs proudly and am loving my hair , I will never cut my Locs as I’m wearing it for my sister and that’s why I will never cut them.
Yall acting like if you don't have lots you can't go on a spiritual journey or be at your best. Lol. Get it together. Keep researching. Just because you don't have locks doesn't mean you can not go on the spiritual journey. Being natural is the best way to go but locs have nothing to do with your journey. If you believe that you have not taken a step.

Locks are beautiful i always wanted my hair lock but there were too much discrimatio n in the 60s now iam comfortable wearing my locks we are living in the last days and some of us will havee to flee to the mountains so it will be the most comfortable hair style
I've had my hair locked for over 10 years now.... Once they started growing and filling out I really loved them.... Looking in the mirror 🪞 one day and thought to myself this is how I've always supposed to look. Never cutting them off. Been on job interviews before and one the first questions to be asked of me is " are you willing to cut ✂️ your hair "..... My response is always the same, what does my hair have to do with me performing a job?

I cut my locks off twice because I had to. The third time I grew them back I trimmed them and It hurt everytime I cut my locks. When I don’t have them I feel like something missing. I’ve noticed how ppl react to locks some good some bad. I love my hair and I don’t care what you think. I thank the creator of all things for all my blessing. Ppl stay up & never come down.
True, I'm 19 years into my second set, had 7 years on my first and actually sit on them accidently at times and they weight a ton when wet but they save plenty of money while bypassing barbers.
Another interesting thing is that in South Afrika when we go through initiation to become traditional healers we lock our hair. Depending on the type of initiation you''re going through you apply "idumane"/ red clay to your locks
I loc'd mine in 2020 & I've never felt so free. I don't even recognize myself before when I was wearing wigs or just my afro puffs. I can't wait till my hair gets longer. It's amazing what our hair can do ❤ Edit: oh & I'm no longer obsessed with retwisting. I haven't retwisted mine since the end of April. I like it wild 😏🇭🇹

I'm on my third and final set of locs. First time was traditional. Second was micro and this third is freeform. I realized that I was sick and tired of trying to fit into societies standard of beauty. I love the uniqueness of my hair and wouldn't go back. Plus I love to be different and everybody hopping on the loc train so I hopped off and went a different direction with them
Having locs since 2004, I'm used to gawking, mainly from people who've never seen them. I've had to cuss out several who got bold enough to try to grab or touch them..eewww. It was a challenge to find caps/hats to fit me, as they became very long and thick, some evolving into "tree trunk " locs. Fortunately, I found a company that makes hats from cotton and spandex which allows them to stretch to provide a comfortable fit. But, everyone has their own opinion of locs. Some love them, some don't. But, if you choose to grow them, wear them with dignity and pride.
Good on you for standing up for yourself and your long loc journey. I'm kinda new myself, just a little more than 2 years. So far the only hats I can wear are visors, but I'm still looking!
I am 3 years strong in my journey and I love it. My Locs are my babies 🖤 I can honestly say my journey has been and still is so spiritual and I encourage all to join the movement
I have had two set of locks now. I love it!!! When my antennas were gone, I felt the negative and anxious frequencies of others coming onto me. I had to reground myself and then I met my bf (who has locks) and restarted my journey again. I’m two years next month with semi free form thick locks.
@@goodprowealth8087 yes, the positive energy I sense and gravitate towards it. The negative on the other hand is like a gut warning to switch directions so my aura doesn’t attract toxic draining vampires.
Throughout history locs can be found on every continent they’re natural and beautiful. After I became a born again Christian, I was combing locs out of my hair twice a day… The Lord kept telling me to keep them so I did. I must say it has been interesting to see how people treat me differently now ( like I’m dirty or something I keep my locs clean and oiled) It’s been a humbling experience for my confidence and spirituality. I know locs have a connection to our history, but to be honest I just like my hair growing out and locking up naturally. It’s not a spiritual symbolization for me now, it’s just me being me in my natural state without changing for the eyes outside myself. It’s me being who I am and remaining true to my self love.
I love my locs! I've had my locs for almost three years and my hair is past the middle of my back. Keeping my hair in its natural state promoted fast hair growth. I can wear my locs in so many different hairstyles. My locs are easy to maintain.
I started my Journey in 2020 at 30 yrs old, my hair is so thick and long 😍 it’s definitely one of the best decisions I’ve made ! Ohh and let’s not forget the MANY COMPLIMENTS 💕

Please do not call them “ dred “ locks . The English said they were “ dreadful “ hence the term “ dred locks “ I call them locks and my son has had them since birth … he has amazing self awareness….

That's because she was brought up in a dark period of Jamaican History, slavery mindset and stereotism. Ratafarians fought hard in Jamaica for now international society to be proud or accept wearing locs

Why women want to wear wigs and weaves and all kinds of fake hair when their own natural hair is so beautiful is something I can’t understand. So happy to see women embracing their beautiful, God-given hair.
It's sad that our women feel the need to do this...our hair is sooo versatile and unique, why would you want to cover that up with a wig or weave just to conform to what society states is beautiful?...when I was young all you saw on TV were white women, even Chinese, Indian were seen as beautiful, desirable and demure...the black woman was loud, coarse with rough hair...the beautiful black women were lightskinned with European traits etc...it's 2022, we are allegedly enlightened, empowered and woke so why are our women still hiding their natural attributes in order to conform and seek validation?...it's sad...
@@SilvaBlakk I agree. Covering the hair goes back to practices from slavery when black women were required to cover their hair. Even black actresses in movies were required to cover their hair if appearing in a movie with a white cast. Only in black cast movies could actresses such as Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge wear their hair uncovered because their movies were only shown in theatres in black neighborhoods. Fast forward to current times. Wigs and weaves and all kinds of fake hair have just taken the place of scarves. It's all an attempt to cover or disguise the true natural hair. It seems to be getting worse instead of better. Wig and fake hair stores flourish in the black community but none of these kinds of stores can be found in white or Asian communities unless they are targeting black women as customers.
@@rozchristopherson648 I wasn't aware of the origins of hair covering, thank you 🙏🏿🙏🏿...I once saw a vid of a young black girl cutting her hair with scissors, at first I chuckled cos I imagined the cussing she'd get from her mum...I stopped when I saw her put a wig on after the few snips...I felt for that kid, that even at her young age she "knows" what "beauty" is...no doubt she was only doing what she's seen her mum / aunts doing...I remember my mum having a straightening comb when I was a kid and remember when she'd straighten my sisters hair...put it on the stove to get hot then run it through her afro, lawwwwwd!! I remember the smell of burning hair...the things our women went through and still go through to be accepted by society...😔😔...

As a African woman in America I have to say the most judgement I had gotten from having my locs has been from other “black” people with locs.. many condescending questions and evil eyes. I felt compelled to cut them off around when the pandemic hit because of the outside energy attached & those envious glares. I had decided to go on my loc journey to connect more with my African people. I felt had something to prove as a “lightskin” as my people call me. Holy spirit told me I did not need to loc my hair for any peoples acceptance. I am already very well connected. I was actually told when I go around people to wear wigs and head wraps just as other spiritual women of the Most High do around the world ei; Jewish , Muslim, & Orisa women to name a few. But, I concur, they’re beautiful & I do miss my locs from time but I feel so much more free & still very connected with Holy Spirit without them. I have seen many comments judging black women for wearing wigs, and wraps.. judge not that you be not judged. Again, It was a beautiful journey and I may grow them back when I get the ok from the Most High. The journey is not for all of us. ❤️
i’m half black, grew up with my white mother. she called locs dirty and ugly while she slapped texturizer in my 4B hair. I wish i had grew up knowing how beautiful our hair was, and the history of it. it’s nice to say i’m 2 months into my loc journey now. and to me; it’s the most beautiful hairstyle.

It's true, I was in the Army for 10 Years. I joined in 2011 and women I joined with had to cut their locs off. They were against the regulation at the time. We also could not wear twists at the time. I knew seldom women with them after that and if they did have them they wore wigs over it to cover that they had them. It was very specific and the styles that we used to protect our hair that were available seemed limited in my opinion. Locs and other varies styles are now allowed which is great, but I feel horrible that it was ever not. I am now out of Army and have installed microlocs on my hair last week. I'm so excited for this journey and to embrace what my hair natural does. This video was very informative! 💜

The fact that people go against how we wear our hair upsets me to the core amongst other things, yet it is okay for others to do the same thing. Locks are gorgeous no matter how they look.
The vikings also wore locks, maybe to prevent head lice on long sea voyages. It’s sad that we live in a time where it’s frowned upon in many especially major us cities, when Afro cultures themselves have experienced discrimination for wearing their hair in locks. I had mine for twenty years and was lucky enough to travel the Caribbean and many other places before all the PC BS began. All whites I know wearing Locks have utmost respect for Afro culture so please respect ours as well. One Love✌🏻
I'm gonna start my loc journey soon and i agree with you. Locks are beautiful, i like them on everyone. I am not from the USA and seeing what Black people have to go through regarding their hair US absolutely outrageous. Everyone should be able to wear their hair as they like. Locks are spiritual, beautiful and we should stand together in this.
More good information about Locs. I’m 5 plus months in. I have several relatives who have Locs including my daughter who is three plus years in. She’s my inspiration. I just wish I would have gotten my done three years ago with her. For me, they carry a positive vibe, freedom, self love and I don’t have to spend hours in the mirror trying to feel pretty. I am pretty, I am gorgeous, I am beautiful…

Growing up, i was taught locs were seen as “nasty” or looked “dirty”…. As an adult today I can say I’m super excited about starting my loc journey! It has been a challenging journey maintaining my natural hair but I’ve grown to embrace it. 10 years ago i would’ve never wore my hair in a bun & in 2022 I wear buns EVERYDAYYYYYY FAITHFULLY🥰🥰🥰

My three kids and I are all loc'd. I'm 14 years in, my daughter is almost three years in on her second set, my oldest son is a year in, and my youngest son is 10 months in. One of the best decisions I ever made.

Loved this video! But the discomforts were not necessarily explained enough. I just want to inform everyone that your locs and edges will only thin if you do not maintain them correctly. (Aside from medical or genetic instances) And the same goes for them falling out. This can be due to you constantly restyling them, not protecting them properly (items such as dreadsocks and satin pillow cases are highly recommended) putting too much tension on them, and re-twisting them too often and or extremely tight. Also, the only thing you need, and the most basic supplies you can use to maintain your locs are literally oil, washing products (shampoo and depending on preference, conditioner) and water. It is basically free to a couple dollars to maintain locs. I hope everyone is enjoying their journey and if you thought about having locs, I highly recommend it. We all love it here. I was doing Free form, so I got a castor tail.
I am celt, so my vision is like ""forest caveman"", according to the origin'al garden.
Meaning That I wanted to relive what my ancestors did, when the cold was insane from autumn to end of spring 9/12 months per years, plus heavy rain in summer.
I would say like a snowy mountain in africa before.
Mountains lion, for example, from the atlas, they were full of fur to the tail and black.
Like chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, they have a huge quantity of fur, cold friendly.
So I grew my hair from 2003 and 2012, I stopped shampoo and 2016 no brushing.
My hair went from just above the knee, in one year to shoulder length matted.
This was everything I wanted, excepted that I should have wash them a bit to avoid for the sebum to stack up so much in the middle of my tail.
So beginning of 2022, the castor tail was 4 centimeters THICK ( was harder than leather ) and the length was just above my kidneys.
The smell was awful and I began to let myself go like a wheat junky and you know what came after.
So I want to restart but with more conditioning to avoid the horrible smell.
Maybe it's just about the food, clean lean meat and greens and veggies only, no cereals or dairy or too much fat, oil.
In winter, my spine was at body temperature, so hermetic to the cold and even heat and a nice body armour.
I miss my castor tail sooo much. 😭
And ofc, I hate what the humankind is doing to the Garden.
We could have the same technology without this worldwide waste and destruction.... I want my forests back.

I LOVE LOCS!!!!!! Got rid of relaxers, combs, conditioners, etc. Someone I was dating asked me “are you ever gonna take those out or do they come out and I told him with passion absolutely not, EVER! “. Had a family member tell me locs are for men and I asked him to show me that in the Bible of course he couldn’t. Just close to being natural works best for me it’s low maintenance it’s clean they’re beautiful. Hang in there people of locked hair we are going to overcome this prejudice.

I have had 4 sets of locs and can’t see myself rocking anything else. I went to primary school with a Rastafarian family and all I wanted was for my hair to look like theirs. My mother put a relaxer at my hair at age 4, and as soon as I turned 16 I shaved all my hair off and never looked back. Locs for life!

I cut my locks off twice because I had to. The third time I grew them back I trimmed them and It hurt everytime I cut my locks. When I don’t have them I feel like something missing. I’ve noticed how ppl react to locks some good some bad. I love my hair and I don’t care what you think. I thank the creator of all things for all my blessing. Ppl stay up & never come down.

Another interesting thing is that in South Afrika when we go through initiation to become traditional healers we lock our hair. Depending on the type of initiation you''re going through you apply "idumane"/ red clay to your locks

I'm on my third and final set of locs. First time was traditional. Second was micro and this third is freeform. I realized that I was sick and tired of trying to fit into societies standard of beauty. I love the uniqueness of my hair and wouldn't go back. Plus I love to be different and everybody hopping on the loc train so I hopped off and went a different direction with them
Having locs since 2004, I'm used to gawking, mainly from people who've never seen them. I've had to cuss out several who got bold enough to try to grab or touch them..eewww. It was a challenge to find caps/hats to fit me, as they became very long and thick, some evolving into "tree trunk " locs. Fortunately, I found a company that makes hats from cotton and spandex which allows them to stretch to provide a comfortable fit. But, everyone has their own opinion of locs. Some love them, some don't. But, if you choose to grow them, wear them with dignity and pride.
Good on you for standing up for yourself and your long loc journey. I'm kinda new myself, just a little more than 2 years. So far the only hats I can wear are visors, but I'm still looking!

I have had two set of locks now. I love it!!! When my antennas were gone, I felt the negative and anxious frequencies of others coming onto me. I had to reground myself and then I met my bf (who has locks) and restarted my journey again. I’m two years next month with semi free form thick locks.

Throughout history locs can be found on every continent they’re natural and beautiful. After I became a born again Christian, I was combing locs out of my hair twice a day… The Lord kept telling me to keep them so I did. I must say it has been interesting to see how people treat me differently now ( like I’m dirty or something I keep my locs clean and oiled) It’s been a humbling experience for my confidence and spirituality. I know locs have a connection to our history, but to be honest I just like my hair growing out and locking up naturally. It’s not a spiritual symbolization for me now, it’s just me being me in my natural state without changing for the eyes outside myself.

It's sad that our women feel the need to do this...our hair is sooo versatile and unique, why would you want to cover that up with a wig or weave just to conform to what society states is beautiful?...when I was young all you saw on TV were white women, even Chinese, Indian were seen as beautiful, desirable and demure...the black woman was loud, coarse with rough hair...the beautiful black women were lightskinned with European traits etc...it's 2022, we are allegedly enlightened, empowered and woke so why are our women still hiding their natural attributes in order to conform and seek validation?...it's sad...
@@SilvaBlakk I agree. Covering the hair goes back to practices from slavery when black women were required to cover their hair. Even black actresses in movies were required to cover their hair if appearing in a movie with a white cast. Only in black cast movies could actresses such as Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge wear their hair uncovered because their movies were only shown in theatres in black neighborhoods. Fast forward to current times. Wigs and weaves and all kinds of fake hair have just taken the place of scarves. It's all an attempt to cover or disguise the true natural hair. It seems to be getting worse instead of better. Wig and fake hair stores flourish in the black community but none of these kinds of stores can be found in white or Asian communities unless they are targeting black women as customers.

I remember the smell of burning hair...the things our women went through and still go through to be accepted by society...😔😔...

As a African woman in America I have to say the most judgement I had gotten from having my locs has been from other “black” people with locs.. many condescending questions and evil eyes. I felt compelled to cut them off around when the pandemic hit because of the outside energy attached & those envious glares. I had decided to go on my loc journey to connect more with my African people. I felt had something to prove as a “lightskin” as my people call me. Holy spirit told me I did not need to loc my hair for any peoples acceptance. I am already very well connected. I was actually told when I go around people to wear wigs and head wraps just as other spiritual women of the Most High do around the world ei; Jewish , Muslim, & Orisa women to name a few. But, I concur, they’re beautiful & I do miss my locs from time but I feel so much more free & still very connected with Holy Spirit without them. I have seen many comments judging black women for wearing wigs, and wraps.. judge not that you be not judged. Again, It was a beautiful journey and I may grow them back when I get the ok from the Most High. The journey is not for all of us. ❤️

It's true, I was in the Army for 10 Years. I joined in 2011 and women I joined with had to cut their locs off. They were against the regulation at the time. We also could not wear twists at the time. I knew seldom women with them after that and if they did have them they wore wigs over it to cover that they had them. It was very specific and the styles that we used to protect our hair that were available seemed limited in my opinion. Locs and other varies styles are now allowed which is great, but I feel horrible that it was ever not. I am now out of Army and have installed microlocs on my hair last week. I'm so excited for this journey and to embrace what my hair natural does. This video was very informative! 💜

It’s sad that we live in a time where it’s frowned upon in many especially major us cities, when Afro cultures themselves have experienced discrimination for wearing their hair in locks. I had mine for twenty years and was lucky enough to travel the Caribbean and many other places before all the PC BS began. All whites I know wearing Locks have utmost respect for Afro culture so please respect ours as well. One Love✌🏻
I'm gonna start my loc journey soon and i agree with you. Locks are beautiful, i like them on everyone. I am not from the USA and seeing what Black people have to go through regarding their hair US absolutely outrageous. Everyone should be able to wear their hair as they like. Locks are spiritual, beautiful and we should stand together in this.
More good information about Locs. I’m 5 plus months in. I have several relatives who have Locs including my daughter who is three plus years in. She’s my inspiration. I just wish I would have gotten my done three years ago with her. For me, they carry a positive vibe, freedom, self love and I don’t have to spend hours in the mirror trying to feel pretty. I am pretty, I am gorgeous, I am beautiful…
