Before I watch the video I'd like to give my theories lol! Amongst the ones combing out their locs: - 10% might be retaining length as a shortcut to the traditional hustle of the loose natural hair journey - 20% might not want to deal with the lint -20% might not be happy with their locs because of bleaching consequences(harsh and thinning hair) and/or might have kept on treating their locs like loose hair and applied products that over time caused gummy gunk. - 20% might not have gone through the organic process thus weren't really ready for what locs imply (aka the downside of instant locking and extensions) so they just grew tired of the lifestyle and retracted - 10% just followed the trend and now it's not really convenient anymore - 10% decided to go the organic route but are growing impatient and don't really want to wait to see them grow - 10% chose the wrong thickness and want to start over
Your theory doesn't account for those of us who started and stopped our loc journeys for Spiritual reasons. For us, locs were never about vanity, length retention, or trends.
I'm combing out my locs atm after almost 6 years. One reason that I didn't really see represented here is that for some of us, locs are really representative of a stage of our lives, and if that stage was painful or traumatic, combing them out or cutting them can be a way of freeing yourself from that
That's what I'm contemplating. I grew my locs in a time of pain. Sometimes I want to cut them off but it's been 6 years and I would hate to start over at 31 years old lol
Thanks for speaking for the minority of us that are on a spiritual growth journey & cut our locks because of the trauma and pain attached. We are releasing that which no longer serves us. I cut mine on my 20th anniversary March 2023 & feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders literally & figuratively!
this is me. I loc'd my hair while I was postpartum, depressed, my grandma died at the time. did not want to deal with my thick loose natural hair which is high maintenance for me.
Same here! I'm combing out 5 years after I started my loc journey. Haven't lived anything traumatic though, this 5 years where amazing. But, I've grown so much that the locs don't match the new me that is emerging.
I love my locs, I don't miss my loose natural hair, I could never retain length that way wigs/weave. Part of the reason I got locd was because I did not want to conform to the Eurocentric standards ANYMORE. Its spiritual and a lifestyle for me.
Yes! Same here..It made me literally sick to try to force myself into the Euro beauty standard. I feel I’m beautiful just the way God made me and my locs gave me the strength to really believe in myself.

The only style I really miss is twist outs. I LOVE a good fluffy twist out! But just the thought of detangling after wearing that style for a few days snaps me back to reality 😂. It's the very reason I loc'd in the first place. NO MORE COMBS 💕

I think people are combing out locs because they want to grow their hair healthy to a certain length, then comb it out to try to keep/retain length 🤷🏾♀️

I wouldn’t advice anyone to install locs with the hopes of combining it out after retaining some length. From someone who has combed out her locs, I can tell you that it is Tedious doing that, and you might end up losing your hair if you’re not careful. TBH, combing out locs is not for the faint hearted. So if you’re trying to retain length, getting locs is not the answer.
Also the fact that trendy boho curly ends or loose curly locs have been all the rage and the texturism that's been entering the loc community to point where 4c starter locs are looked at as the "ugly stage" while type 3-4a starters are cute... It's disheartening not seeing a lot of loc'd folks with starter 4c non dyed locs receiving the same love but of course like you said you have to be an individual it really is like starting ALL over
I'm not going to lie, I'm about to comb out my ends for these curly ends. But I fully admit that I'm greedy. I want the best of both worlds. I LOVE my 4C curls and I miss them. But I also love my locs and don't want to let them go. Plus I've noticed it's easier to do braided styles when the ends aren't blunt.
I have 4c locs and thank you for saying this!!! I never called it an ugly stage because it wasn’t. It was transformation. The whole process is part of the journey. Locs are not a style they’re a LIFEstyle to be embraced! ❤ Now, I am currently in the process of combing them out after 4 years ((after NEVER thinking I would)). Energetically it was feeling like it was time for them to go and I was wondering why I was feeling that, but I recently got divorced and I’ve had them the length of my previous marriage and it’s time for the new. My locs got me throughhhh some thangs! I’m still encouraging friends to get them ((who are gonna be down for it)).
Shaved my perm off in 1992 when it was called "crazy", not "Big Chop". I started this 2nd set myself 25 years ago. I've cut, colored, twisted, braided, knotted, curled, petaled, bunned, wrapped in yarn & ribbon, used jewelry, wire, shells, crystals, leather or satin cords, hats, headbands and scarves. Lately I cut a fringe in front and let the rest grow past my knees. Once it's long you can fake shorter lengths with styling. You can style the curls like a fro or afro puffs too. Loc'd for life!! When I get too old I'll cut them short or go short freeform. Never loved my hair so much. Every time I get bored it just means there's another level to explore. But that's me. Be happy with whatever you choose.

I will be Loc’d 6 years July 2023. I’ve thought about getting them cut and reattached for the parting. But I am scared of cutting and the detachment. I don’t think parting is that important to me at this point. I tried to start locs 20 years ago, and I wasn’t ready. My sister died almost 6 years ago, and I was ready for the journey. Locs are individual. My locs represent my blackness and my journey through life. I felt like a poser with braids and any type of weave. I felt like a complete fraud in a wig. This is by far one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. As a little black girl, you could of never convinced me that a black women could have hair down her back. She had to be mixed to have that. So it wasn’t even a goal. It wasn’t possible, shoulder length at best. I would perm the hell out of my hair, and then install braids. It was a lie! Black women can grow long hair, loc’d or loose. It takes time, patience and care. I didn’t loc my hair to achieve long hair. I loc’d my hair to find myself. I wanted to be true to myself. The length is just a positive side effect. Your journey, your hair, your decision. Agency.
i am not locked but most of my fam is. and they've had locs since before i was born. i see this as people hopping on a trend and getting bored of it. i dont agree with questioning someone's journey but it hurts my feelings a bit. for us in the caribbean especially rastafari, a woman with locs says she is committed: she commits to her hair and will commit to you, her locs are to her ankles and twisted neatly. you can do extravagant styles with your locs. it shows maturity. having white locs at old age is a good thing! it means you've dedicated to this loc lifestyle and you are trustworthy. i appreciate this boom in locs for putting loc care online, something that was gatekept behind the community but im sad to see so many just dispose of this lifestyle they were obsessed with a couple years ago haha

I’m literally growing my locs with the intentions of unraveling them to maintain length. I’m not concerned at all about what others think about my choice, it’s my hair and I think people take themselves too seriously because what made locs the most holiest of hairstyles that we should dare not experiment 😂 .. I just think it’s ridiculous to think once you start that journey that you should keep this style for life, it’s policing of one’s body and appearance. As long as people aren’t doing things to damage the chemical makeup of the hair I don’t see a reason of concern. I’ve grown my hair long by just rocking my Afro and every two years I’d cut my hair after it grows to shoulder length and for the life of me I just want to have the patience to grow it long so my solution is to loc up and unravel when I come to a satisfactory length. I’ve thought about keeping them bc they are starting to really form but I’ll make that decision when I get there. Definitely don’t want a group of people policing me because I’m supposed to stay loyal to their cause lol .. like yes it’s a glorious style but we are multifaceted beings with one life to life and I’d rather live on my own terms ☀️

I'm going on 7 years locd and this has been the best decision for me not only mentally but also money wise. I admit it was a struggle going thru the stages at first but as they grew out to where they are now there are days when I don't even stress about doing my hair because it's half down my back and easy to style. I'm going to be honest I think why there is this trend with combing out locs too is that video with someone cutting a dred and it had gunk in it. Now many bw are associating locs with being dirty again. However your supposed to wash your locs inbetween twists. To each her own though I feel so free with locs
I remember saying I would NEVER comb my Locs out. I loved them! Wellll after 1 year and 4 months I was doing just that 😂. My parts were a HOT mess. Ended up causing a lot of damage and hair loss 😢. I’m trying to get my hair back to a healthier fuller state now so I can get my Locs again and installed correctly.
As I’m learning to embrace my locs is to recognize when I’m craving change and to process it. It maybe a deeper issue that needs address and accepting. I attempted combing my locs out 2 years ago and it was due to the following: 1. Going through a transformation mentally 2. Not recognizing myself internally/externally 3. Starting a new employment and wondering if I would be accepted with locs. By grace I caught a grip of myself and retwist the one I combed out. Now I have a story with representation one unique loc of many. I believe black women have been oppressed in so many way. That we begin to oppress ourselves not realizing we are truly free. Hence the crazy beauty standards “we” not society hold us to. Once we have recognized we have freedom deep within ourselves then we walk into acceptance and give other sisters permission to be free. Society definitely plays a major role in brain washing, but accountability falls within us. Do I decide to be trendy or stand on my personal moral integrity. I get it. It’s only hair, but what if the things we as women do to our hair reflects the inner us. Since once we crave change we go straight to our hair. Is it because we feel like we have the most control there. I don’t know, but it’s worth looking into.
I want to comb mine out. I locked my hair when I found out I was going to be a grandma. The journey has been difficult to adapt to because I can't get a retwist as often as I would like. My hair needs work and I don't like looking messy all the time. If I knew how to retwist correctly and do many hairstyles, I would keep them. I'm just tired of the same hairstyles
I was natural before locking & locs was the best decision I ever made for myself. I spend way less time on my hair. When you go from an entire day to do your hair to 1-2 hours tops. it's amazing. I had family that were against me, locking, and I did what I felt was best, not what was trending.
I don’t do anything to my locs (not even style them lol) but spray rose water a little oil now and then and wash like once a month lol. I retwist about every two-three months. If I was doing too much to locs then I might as well go back to loose natural and do all that work. Best decision I made because I’m too lazy to do my hair lol.

I've been loc'd for 3 yrs and have started combing mine out. My main reason is honestly because I want to🤷🏾♀️. I've do e just about every hairstyle and locs were no different. I also missed the level of versatility I had with being a loose natural.
Thank you for this video because I just started my loc journey 11 months ago and I did all of my research, and I believe I am loc’d in, I absolutely love my locs and don’t miss being a loose natural at all, which I was for 15 years and was tired of doing my hair every single day with the up keep of the braid/twist outs, detangling, running from the rain, or humidity because any sign of that the shrinkage was real, I could go on and on. I started seeing people all of a sudden combing out their locs and wondered what was going on? I joined this community and said to myself, “I’m about to be alone”, but thought to myself, it is what it is, I went natural when no one in my community/family was natural so I can be loc’d doing the same if I had to. Being transparent I’m not gonna lie I was disappointed seeing this, but can understand people being loc’d for 10 plus years and wanting change so I will get over it
I’m guilty as charged. I made it 8 months into my loc journey and really REALLY missed my fro in its healthy state. I tried doing crochet hair styles on top of my locs and REALLY did not like the way it laid. My braid down pattern was too limited. The other reason is that I could not access my full scalp and I have dandruff issues. It started to feel gross in very specific parts no matter how often I washed. The final reason is that my parting was uneven af. I had some locs near my edges that were already being strained by the weight of the budding locs. So I decided to comb them out. I can always temporarily go back to a loc look using faux locs. If I ever start them again, I will go to a different loctician and ask for far more locs than 70.

OMGOSH! 😀😉 I am almost 18 months in and at about the 12 month mark, thought about starting over once because I installed with two strand twists but felt I should have started with braidlocs because the twists formed horrible bunching. But I decided to just trust the process and ride it out. So glad I kept going. My locs are looking really good now! A lifer here!! 😍🤩😍
I am so glad you left this comment. I am at 17 months mark and I like my locs. I could not go back to loose natural. However, I did start with two strand twists as well and some of my locks are bumpy/ lumpy. So it's good to know that they will overtime will get better. Thanks for sharing your journey.
I agree sis! Another reason is that natural hairstylist are goin viral with their simplified wash and go routines and the girlies are feeling fomo! If i wanted to go back to loose hair i would just cut it and start over. Aint nobody got time to be combing out locs😂

I have had locs well over 10 years. I like anyone with hair can imagine do not love them every day but they are still the best hair decision I ever made. I am not into styles and love to be in water. I knew from day one it was for life.

A few years ago, I combed out mine so I could correct the parting. I'm not a stickler on "crispy" parts but I do have to have healthy loc sizes. This is where it's good to know the density of your hair on every area of your scalp. Needless to say, lesson learned and my locs today are flourishing. Great topic!
I had mine combed out by a professional at about 6 months in to correct size and shape and immediately had it redone. No regrets. Now I'm planning to comb out the ends because I've always loved the way my ends curl.

I love my locs I don’t miss my loose natural hair at all that was way more work way more time, consuming and way more of a headache. I’ve been loose natural. My whole life only been locked for two years, and I am loving it.
This was so dope! I left the crack in 99’ and loc’d in 2004 until 2021. For 16 that became a part of my identity and I NEVER thought I would cut them. After my granny passed, My body’s response to the loss caused my locs to thin a bit. I felt like my locs literally were weighing me down. I cut not combed cus all the grief and loss was in my hair. Maybe the journey will bring me back again one day ❤
I’m combing out my last 14 locs that I installed on myself after 5.5 years and as much as I loved them I’m tired of the excess weight of them on my neck, my hair not drying in a reasonable amount of time and I genuinely miss the lightness I feel with my natural hair. I didn’t notice how heavy my hair was until I combed out half my head and how much I missed getting to see my grey hair come in as I’ve gotten older. I’ve done the full gamut of hair styles from perms to twa and now locs but after going through grief and loss, my locs are a marker of a dark time of my life that I’m not in anymore.
Before I decided to begin my loc journey, I wore a buzz cut for 2 years, after stopping years of relaxers. Now I'm 10 years into my loc journey. There's no turning back for me. I'm one of the "parts don't matter to me" people. As long as my hair and scalp are healthy and moisturized I could care less about the "grid".
I am currently combing out my locs after 3 years. I had loose curly hair and find that having locs is higher maintenance than loose hair. It’s not what people think. Also, they get so heavy over time and i’ve been having a lot of headaches because of the weight. It took me 6 hours one time to style my hair and it made me realize how time consuming it is. Also people don’t mention of the lints that can get caught in your hair and it’s more difficult to dry than loose hair.
@@Valley__It is the oils and product that most people with locs put in their hair which causes lint/debris to embed and remain in the loc. I don’t know who came up with putting all these oils in our hair and worry about so much moisture. Did our parents put oil or grease in our hair for maintenance? Go ahead and learn the valuable lessons.
You are right having locks is not a joke my first year I learned the biggest lesson ever I left conditioner in my hair by the product of Cantu the whole day till the next day, with a scarf wrapped over it the next day I tried to rinse it out, and my hair smelled like mildew for the next four years I pushed through and kept detoxing my hair and I’m nine years strong. within seven years I started combing out the ends because it was the ends of my first year of having them built up of mildew so some are shorter than the others and my profile picture does me no justice, but they are very beautiful and healthy today I am nine you’re strong The journey has been real. I started them to have a sense of my ancestors when they were captured during slavery days because they were forced to undo their natural beauty which is their crown and I long for the crown so I stuck through and it was well worth it.

I am on my 3rd loc journey and the reason the others didn’t last passed 6 months and less is because I couldn’t get passed looking at the butterfly effect and lumps that happens to my hair texture. I mean holes so big you can fit a pencil…this 3rd time I started with a hair dresser which I did use a hair dresser before but this time after about 4 months I took over the situation because I was hoping she would keep the lumps from coming but she was just rolling over them and putting me under the dryer for hours and piling brown gel in my hair! More than necessary! Keeping me at the hair dresser for like 7 hours! I started doing my own damn hair finishing in 2 hours unless I have to dye my greys. My hair was getting abused at the hair dressers! There all day like I worked there😂😂😂😂😡so anyhow I have learned to accept my lumps and I’m still locked 8 months now and have no intentions of giving up now. I don’t want to go back to the loose natural. I like easy maintenance and for me this is easier accept for retwist time. Some days I still hate the lumps but my hair is becoming more uniform as I continue to retwist. I’m so looking forward to the loose bun life! Even with blow dryer hair I would wear buns. I love seeing black people with locs in our beautiful naturalness❤❤❤
I was natural before locing my hair. But I went through a period of just not doing anything to my hair. I love my locs soooo much but my scalp is so inflamed and nothing is helping. But I will say that they have helped me to embrace my natural hair in general and not care how big it gets when it dries or how the curls look. My locs were perfect to me, they were all sizes. Far from perfect. I’m def going to miss them. They increased my confidence in myself and just not giving af about other people’s opinions.
I've been natural since 1996. Locs are a serious commitment that I'm still not ready for, but I'm considering it. In the mean time, I love taking care of and styling my loose natural hair.
A lot of the girls combing out their locs, gor locs because the algorithm was showing them beautiful locs (ironically) during lockdown aha, myself included! And im ready to get rid of mine too, mainly because of imbedded link which really bothers me and I want a straight hair look (So yes spot on two points you raised!)
I just recently combed my 3 month old locs out. Trusted a family member to start me and she didn’t do the size or the parts that I asked for. I refused to be unhappy and I’m gonna have these for the rest of my life. Plus it took me 5 days to combine them out. Currently combing out my locs, my mother told me to lock my hair because I have a sensitive scalp and don’t like my hair getting done. Gat locks she said, it will always be presentable she said, it’s less work and maintenance than keeping it loose she said. Well I say she was wrong I can’t brush out my hair whenever I want, I can’t make giant puffs when going out, I can’t quickly oil my hair and change my hair style in the middle of the night so I am combing it out and I will return to the puff regardless of her warnings that wearing my hair in one everyday will make the middle short because I wear a hat to work and can simply comb it out at night and wear a deflated Afro or granny plaits to work

Like you said their body/hair do as they so choose lol.. I concur with the researching though to ensure you truly in it.. I started my own locs , dye and style! I moisturize my locs from the inside out, so I don’t do products I understand that this isn’t the case for many people.. my locs aren’t above all lol however I do the inner work and they are thriving to my liking! Wouldn’t dare pick a new set! I’m in this for the long haul. I understand we change as people but it’s a far fetched idea for me! It’s hair, but it’s deep for me! Keep uplifting women and hearing their truths whatever that may be! In this world it’s just good to be heard even if you aren’t entirely on a person page! My parting is off working from more of a free form synthetic locs that I converted to human hair loc extensions. However, I'm NOT giving up on my locs, I love them! ♥️
I had locs before but I took care of them badly with bleaching no maintenance and I CUT them out. It was so badly bleached and locs were falling out and my hair was so damaged that I just shaved my head clean bald & started over. I learned so much about myself with a bald head. I was so young back then but being older now with the knowledge, time,resources and money I have, I want to start over my journey. My hair is at a doable length and natural for me to just add human hair loc extensions. But this time around I’ll only bleach the ends and not the entire head multiple times (if I even do decide to bleach, I love having dark brown, black hair) The loc journey isn’t for everyone and if people want to not experience it, that’s their prerogative and it doesn’t take away from their black or woman identity. I’ve had my loc for 7 years, I never thought I’ll comb my loc. people will always ask if I’m not tired and I’d boldly say no I’m not.. it’s a journey lol. I have now decided to loose them out because I think it’s time to let go lol
I was a afro Girl but ive been loc'd For 2 years. 😭 i miss my Afro alot but im to inlove with my locs ive wanted since i was 17 and wanted my mother to start mines. She didnt believe that id keep them in because i always took down braids after a week but she finally did mines at 26 and here i am 2 years later💜💜💜
I started my locs in 2017 with mini braids by 2021 they were mid back length and beautiful but some of the roots were not strong enough in my opinion espically in my crown area so December of 21 comb them out. I restarted my journey again August 1 2022, this time with the much thicker roots and locs and I am very happy with them no turning back.
I’ve been loc’d for 4 years in August. I did them myself and want to start over smaller and neater. I’m either going to comb them out or cut them off. Just like before, I want to take control and do it myself because I hate waiting when I have a nagging urge to do something for myself. It feels like I’ve accomplished something for me by me and that’s a win.
I’m 2.5 years loc’d and the journey has been beautiful. I started my journey knowing if and when I decided my journey was over, I was NOT combing them out. I have not the time. I started my journey after a really low point in my life, and they have done more for me than I ever expected. At this point, the weight is a lot and my scalp is suffering. Planning to cut them for my 35th in a few weeks but will likely be back because I truly love my loc’d hair.
I just made 20 years of being loc’d. At 48 I’m in full throttle menopause and am noticing my roots are thinning. I also developed dermatitis and am unable to clear my scalp of the scales and scabs while loc’d. The main reason is I recently sprained my neck washing my behind length locs and the struggle is no longer worth it. I love being natural but it’s time to revert back to my big afro ✊🏾

I loved my microlocs, got many compliments on them everyday. But I started them a year ago at the hardest time of my life. Dealing with postpartum depression, being jobless and going through EMT school. Now a year later I’ve been an EMT for almost a year, have my own home and a beautiful relationship with my son who’s almost 2. I want to release that energy and let my full mane flourish again.
Sounds like your microlocs carried you through some real life changes! It’s amazing how they marked such a powerful part of your journey. I combed out the locs in my profile picture. I started them and my parts were not the best. I was not sure of the direction of the 2 strand twists so they were not always retwisted in the correct direction, which caused some thinning. I don’t plan on making those mistakes again.
I was working a job that was incredibly stressful. I needed to but them off because I will have no hair before I have unhealthy hair. Plan to grow them back at the end of the year!
Im 21/2 years in with my locks. Love them I will never cut them unless I developed scalp issues. Which I have never had and don’t expect to have as I take care of them and my internal health
I just loosed out my locs because by I didnt like how my parting and box sizing was. Honestly, I dont have much money and locs was the affordable option for me because I was maintaining it myself. When I find work again, I'll go to a professional and get it the proper way.
Yeah, I just started mine and it's a little disheartening watching so many combing out their locs. I think some people comb out their locs cause they have buildup and lint.
I’m taking my sisterlocs out after 13 plus years because of thinning locs and to much scalp started to show although I combined my locs two years ago 6 months ago I cut them off from waist length to shoulder length. I have removed the last row of locs in the back to see how the hair will react. I’m surprise because I never hear about people removing locs because they are thinning and yet I see many locs that are thinning.
The thought of combing out my locs has crossed my mind but i know it's not a true thought so I disregard it. I went "natural" about 18 years ago, cut my hair down to about an inch(I'd done it before) the plans this time was to get locs as I'd wanted them for sometimes but I realize I wasn't ready. So after about 14 years of a puffball, I cut it again wore a somewhat tapered swoop do than a little over a year knew I was ready for my locs. But first I braided it with medium braids down to mid back to get use to the weight and 6 months later started my locs. It's been 4 years and I love them, yes, I have thought of letting them go but those thoughts are usually when the refresh redo has grown out, I'm picking out lint which I rarely get or a special event I'm to go to occurs and I don't know how to style it, I do my hair myself unless one of those special occasion happens, I don't know what to quite do with it than I go to my niece who's been a beautician for over 20 years. Honestly, after 4 years I only wash and condition my hair if it's retwist time I put about a tablespoon of leave in conditioner(usually has rosewater, black castor, shea butter or something else good doe my hair in it)mixed with about a tablespoon of hair oil in a bottle of 16 oz water spray bottle to hydrate as I retwist and I don't part it i gather the hair neatly around the loc and retwist. I like different size locs but they are mostly medium size. Now that they are about mid back I've realized I have to do more. So a few months ago I purchased a soft hood dryer, can't let it naturally dry as much any more due to the length it will sour(learn that one time the hard way). Also, i will be oiling my scalp and new growth more once a month. Retwist is about every 3-4 months so I'm hopeful that extra oil will keep the older hair looking more conditioned and hydrated. Locs are a commitment in my opinion and experience and something not to enter into lightly.

I’ve had freeform locs for 6 years now, I’m cutting off 3/4 the length and combing out the rest because they’re so thick and have gotten so long that after washing, if I’m not willing to sit under the hooded dryer for 2 hours, they WILL have water trapped inside and gain mildew (and i literally live in Florida lol). i’ve noticed I’ve been starting to neglect washing my hair simply because I dread that process so much so I’m doing this for my mental health and for the health of my hair. I probably will go back to locs, sooner than later, but I’ll make them thinner this time around.
I got sisterlocks in 2020. After about 3 months I combed them out. I wasn’t feeling the ugly stage and I lacked patience. Now I’m reconsidering getting them again and having the patience to see them mature.

As a formally loc’d currently free natural, when the time came for change I just cut them because combing them out leaves you with natural hair that is severely damaged from that process (no matter how much conditioner you use). Rather than deal with that, I just started over. I’ve been thinking of what’s next for me. The length I have now (slightly past shoulders) makes it so convenient that I’m hesitant to do something I’ll regret. I’ll probably just teach myself to braid my own hair to add some variety to my routine.
I just combed out my 5 years locs yesterday and this is the second time ive combed out my locs and the reason behind it is because i change my hair each time i want to change as a person. My hair is my personal growth and change

I’ve been on the fence about locing my hair. Mainly because I love my loose natural hair and am afraid I’ll miss it! I know the type I want so I feel like I’ll be ok bc there the most versatile but the price scares me-😂The goal now is December of this year!
I got them for a few reasons but my fiancés hair is down to his butt and always was inspired by them.. I was like well if Locs are growing people hair ima just loc mines til desired length then comb out( and I worn every hairstyle known-to woman 🤣) but now that I’m 2 years in I could NEVER.. i here to stay baby! 🤞🏾
I thought of combing out my locs because I missed my loose natural hair and I wanted them smaller. My husband also liked my loose natural hair but it is so much easier maintenance wise.
I'm combing nine out soon after 3years because my parting is ass trash! I don't wanna be a loose natural though. I never thrived in the 8years of being a loose nat. So after I comb these out I'm getting them right back in
I combed out my first set cause I wanted them smaller. I cut off my first set due to damage and now I’m currently on my third set after doin research on how to properly care for them. I put so much love in my hair this time I want my hair to not be constantly manipulated and let it do what it does and even if I comb or cut this set off which I’ll never do again I’m goin on a fourth journey cause my scalp is used to not being combed out and I love how much love I show myself no matter the phase 🥰🤎
I have 4c locs and while the curly type 3 boho look is cute, my hair doesn’t do that and I love it lol for me I never called it an ugly stage because it wasn’t. It was transformation. The whole process is part of the journey. Locs are not a style they’re a LIFEstyle to be embraced! ❤ Now, I am currently in the process of combing them out after 4 years ((after NEVER thinking I would)). Energetically it was feeling like it was time for them to go and I was wondering why I was feeling that, but I recently got divorced and I’ve had them the length of my previous marriage and it’s time for the new. My locs got me throughhhh some thangs! I’m still encouraging friends to get them ((who are gonna be down for it)).

I stopped retwisting almost a year ago to grow out my fro before chopping my locs off. Reason being is that I want micro locs. They look beautiful to me and much more versatile than the size I have now. You can mask how bad you need a retwist better when the locs are smaller 😂😂
I've been locd for a little over 7 years. I did my research and chose a size I wanted. I still love my pics, but I had them colored a few years ago but did not take care of them. I'm now thinking of cutting the color and combing them out to transition to microlocs. Not interested in loose hair at all but I would like the diameter of my locs to be a tadbit thinner than they are now.

Not gone lie, I'm only a year into my journey and I have high top locs. Sometimes I feel very discouraged because I hardly see ANY women with high top locs & it makes me worried that maybe it wasn't the right choice. Or maybe I should just do a full head of locs. But the hubs has kept me encouraged & he loves my high top locs. Guess I just wish I saw more women with high tops locs so I don't feel so alone or feel like the only people I can relate to is the fellas. But I'm gonna ride this journey out & see where it takes me. With my high top locs, guess I'll be a unicorn 🦄 😂❤

I had my locs in for 6 years and I just took them down bc the longer they got the thinner they got in the front so I’m restarting in 2 months just needed a break but I love and miss my locs can’t wait to come back
I been loc'd almost 10yrs and thinking about combing them out. I got them because this was 1 style I hadn't tried. Also wanted to see if I could grow my hair longer in a permanent protective style. I definitely miss being a loose natural but not all the maintenance
Since I was a kid, I’ve had pressed out hair and always had a good length of hair until I was older. Secondly, relaxers🙄Dyed my hair etc… I didn’t start wearing extensions until I was 27 because I’ve always had a decent length. My hair became damaged due to relaxers and fake hair, I didn’t have many options left and I’ve always liked having hair.! So, I wanted to try something new to me old to y’all😂 Either I was going to cut it again or get loc’d.I’ve started my loc journey back in April if this year and I love the process journey. I’ve never seen my hair grow that fast within a couple months. I might comb it out years later when I have those Damien Marley locs😂
Ive been locd for almost 5 years. I’m about to comb out mine because of a persistent scalp dermatitis issue that is really hard to treat with my locs. In order to treat it properly I have to wash 1-2 a week and it’s been horrendous to deal with 😢. Plus I need to asses the health of my hair and if there’s any thinning
I feel you Bonnie on the dermatitis issue. It’s runs rampant in the loc community, so your not alone. I know it’s a PAIN to deal with, but it sounds like you are doing the proper steps to get rid of it. Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Its interesting to me that so many people want locs for length. I'm 2yrs in and once they get a certain length, I'm trimming them down. I know that sounds crazy but i like them around collarbone length. Plus I love the ease of locs but don't want the weight. When I am ready for something new I'll chop them all off.
#3 is the reason I’m currently combing out my daughters and starting over. They’re parts are all over the place and some locs are thicker than others. Plus my oldest daughter (8) is becoming self-conscious because she sweats her retwist out within days. So this time, we’re going with interlocked microloc with an actual grid. I’ve been loc’d for 12 years now!
I also will had to the last point that I didn’t realize how much consistency locs need. Wash every two weeks. Retwist every 4-8 weeks. Other than that they will matt together at the root 😅. Water and oil atleast every other day! Some of us who were lazy before with our haircare routine are in for a round awakening. Locs is like going to hair care bootcamp! 😅
@@LocinwithCB Yes indeed! My sister loc’d my daughters hair during the pandemic. She was 9 years old. I thought I was done with doing hair for some reason! Oh heck nawwww!! Forced me to take better care of my babies hair for sure! More than I ever did when her hair was loose. I always just did pony tails as I was always working and that is all the time I had for her hair. Her hair was even breaking off around the edges and in the middle from too much pony tail wearing. But these locs were life changing for the both of us! With Locs her hair is always DONE! You just have to maintain that consistent schedule and the hair will flourish! I even locd my hair a year afterwards. Best decision ever! Forced me to take proper care if my hair. ☺️
Before I watch the video I'd like to give my theories lol! Amongst the ones combing out their locs:
- 10% might be retaining length as a shortcut to the traditional hustle of the loose natural hair journey
- 20% might not want to deal with the lint
-20% might not be happy with their locs because of bleaching consequences(harsh and thinning hair) and/or might have kept on treating their locs like loose hair and applied products that over time caused gummy gunk.
- 20% might not have gone through the organic process thus weren't really ready for what locs imply (aka the downside of instant locking and extensions) so they just grew tired of the lifestyle and retracted
- 10% just followed the trend and now it's not really convenient anymore
- 10% decided to go the organic route but are growing impatient and don't really want to wait to see them grow
- 10% chose the wrong thickness and want to start over

Your theory doesn't account for those of us who started and stopped our loc journeys for Spiritual reasons. For us, locs were never about vanity, length retention, or trends.
I think we are to obsessed with what other people want to do with their hair
I'm combing out my locs atm after almost 6 years. One reason that I didn't really see represented here is that for some of us, locs are really representative of a stage of our lives, and if that stage was painful or traumatic, combing them out or cutting them can be a way of freeing yourself from that
That's what I'm contemplating. I grew my locs in a time of pain. Sometimes I want to cut them off but it's been 6 years and I would hate to start over at 31 years old lol

Thanks for speaking for the minority of us that are on a spiritual growth journey & cut our locks because of the trauma and pain attached. We are releasing that which no longer serves us. I cut mine on my 20th anniversary March 2023 & feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders literally & figuratively!

Same here! I'm combing out 5 years after I started my loc journey. Haven't lived anything traumatic though, this 5 years where amazing. But, I've grown so much that the locs don't match the new me that is emerging.

I wouldn’t advice anyone to install locs with the hopes of combining it out after retaining some length. From someone who has combed out her locs, I can tell you that it is Tedious doing that, and you might end up losing your hair if you’re not careful. TBH, combing out locs is not for the faint hearted. So if you’re trying to retain length, getting locs is not the answer.
That seems very odd since combing out locs is damaging in and of itself.

Also the fact that trendy boho curly ends or loose curly locs have been all the rage and the texturism that's been entering the loc community to point where 4c starter locs are looked at as the "ugly stage" while type 3-4a starters are cute... It's disheartening not seeing a lot of loc'd folks with starter 4c non dyed locs receiving the same love but of course like you said you have to be an individual it really is like starting ALL over

I'm not going to lie, I'm about to comb out my ends for these curly ends. But I fully admit that I'm greedy. I want the best of both worlds. I LOVE my 4C curls and I miss them. But I also love my locs and don't want to let them go. Plus I've noticed it's easier to do braided styles when the ends aren't blunt.

Shaved my perm off in 1992 when it was called "crazy", not "Big Chop". I started this 2nd set myself 25 years ago. I've cut, colored, twisted, braided, knotted, curled, petaled, bunned, wrapped in yarn & ribbon, used jewelry, wire, shells, crystals, leather or satin cords, hats, headbands and scarves. Lately I cut a fringe in front and let the rest grow past my knees. Once it's long you can fake shorter lengths with styling. You can style the curls like a fro or afro puffs too. Loc'd for life!! When I get too old I'll cut them short or go short freeform. Never loved my hair so much. Every time I get bored it just means there's another level to explore. But that's me. Be happy with whatever you choose.

I will be Loc’d 6 years July 2023. I’ve thought about getting them cut and reattached for the parting. But I am scared of cutting and the detachment. I don’t think parting is that important to me at this point. I tried to start locs 20 years ago, and I wasn’t ready. My sister died almost 6 years ago, and I was ready for the journey. Locs are individual. My locs represent my blackness and my journey through life. I felt like a poser with braids and any type of weave. I felt like a complete fraud in a wig. This is by far one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. As a little black girl, you could of never convinced me that a black women could have hair down her back. She had to be mixed to have that. So it wasn’t even a goal. It wasn’t possible, shoulder length at best. I would perm the hell out of my hair, and then install braids. It was a lie! Black women can grow long hair, loc’d or loose. It takes time, patience and care. I didn’t loc my hair to achieve long hair. I loc’d my hair to find myself. I wanted to be true to myself. The length is just a positive side effect. Your journey, your hair, your decision. Agency.

i am not locked but most of my fam is. and they've had locs since before i was born. i see this as people hopping on a trend and getting bored of it. i dont agree with questioning someone's journey but it hurts my feelings a bit. for us in the caribbean especially rastafari, a woman with locs says she is committed: she commits to her hair and will commit to you, her locs are to her ankles and twisted neatly. you can do extravagant styles with your locs. it shows maturity. having white locs at old age is a good thing! it means you've dedicated to this loc lifestyle and you are trustworthy. i appreciate this boom in locs for putting loc care online, something that was gatekept behind the community but im sad to see so many just dispose of this lifestyle they were obsessed with a couple years ago haha

I’m literally growing my locs with the intentions of unraveling them to maintain length. I’m not concerned at all about what others think about my choice, it’s my hair and I think people take themselves too seriously because what made locs the most holiest of hairstyles that we should dare not experiment 😂 .. I just think it’s ridiculous to think once you start that journey that you should keep this style for life, it’s policing of one’s body and appearance. As long as people aren’t doing things to damage the chemical makeup of the hair I don’t see a reason of concern.
I’ve grown my hair long by just rocking my Afro and every two years I’d cut my hair after it grows to shoulder length and for the life of me I just want to have the patience to grow it long so my solution is to loc up and unravel when I come to a satisfactory length.
I’ve thought about keeping them bc they are starting to really form but I’ll make that decision when I get there. Definitely don’t want a group of people policing me because I’m supposed to stay loyal to their cause lol .. like yes it’s a glorious style but we are multifaceted beings with one life to life and I’d rather live on my own terms ☀️

I'm going on 7 years locd and this has been the best decision for me not only mentally but also money wise. I admit it was a struggle going thru the stages at first but as they grew out to where they are now there are days when I don't even stress about doing my hair because it's half down my back and easy to style. I'm going to be honest I think why there is this trend with combing out locs too is that video with someone cutting a dred and it had gunk in it. Now many bw are associating locs with being dirty again. However your supposed to wash your locs inbetween twists. To each her own though I feel so free with locs
I remember saying I would NEVER comb my Locs out. I loved them! Wellll after 1 year and 4 months I was doing just that 😂. My parts were a HOT mess. Ended up causing a lot of damage and hair loss 😢. I’m trying to get my hair back to a healthier fuller state now so I can get my Locs again and installed correctly.
As I’m learning to embrace my locs is to recognize when I’m craving change and to process it. It maybe a deeper issue that needs address and accepting. I attempted combing my locs out 2 years ago and it was due to the following:
1. Going through a transformation mentally
2. Not recognizing myself internally/externally
3. Starting a new employment and wondering if I would be accepted with locs.
By grace I caught a grip of myself and retwist the one I combed out. Now I have a story with representation one unique loc of many.
I believe black women have been oppressed in so many way. That we begin to oppress ourselves not realizing we are truly free. Hence the crazy beauty standards “we” not society hold us to. Once we have recognized we have freedom deep within ourselves then we walk into acceptance and give other sisters permission to be free.
Society definitely plays a major role in brain washing, but accountability falls within us. Do I decide to be trendy or stand on my personal moral integrity.
I get it. It’s only hair, but what if the things we as women do to our hair reflects the inner us.
Since once we crave change we go straight to our hair. Is it because we feel like we have the most control there. I don’t know, but it’s worth looking into.

I want to comb mine out. I locked my hair when I found out I was going to be a grandma. The journey has been difficult to adapt to because I can't get a retwist as often as I would like. My hair needs work and I don't like looking messy all the time. If I knew how to retwist correctly and do many hairstyles, I would keep them. I'm just tired of the same hairstyles
I was natural before locking & locs was the best decision I ever made for myself. I spend way less time on my hair. When you go from an entire day to do your hair to 1-2 hours tops. it's amazing. I had family that were against me, locking, and I did what I felt was best, not what was trending.
I don’t do anything to my locs (not even style them lol) but spray rose water a little oil now and then and wash like once a month lol. I retwist about every two-three months. If I was doing too much to locs then I might as well go back to loose natural and do all that work. Best decision I made because I’m too lazy to do my hair lol.

I've been loc'd for 3 yrs and have started combing mine out. My main reason is honestly because I want to🤷🏾♀️. I've do e just about every hairstyle and locs were no different. I also missed the level of versatility I had with being a loose natural.

Thank you for this video because I just started my loc journey 11 months ago and I did all of my research, and I believe I am loc’d in, I absolutely love my locs and don’t miss being a loose natural at all, which I was for 15 years and was tired of doing my hair every single day with the up keep of the braid/twist outs, detangling, running from the rain, or humidity because any sign of that the shrinkage was real, I could go on and on. I started seeing people all of a sudden combing out their locs and wondered what was going on? I joined this community and said to myself, “I’m about to be alone”, but thought to myself, it is what it is, I went natural when no one in my community/family was natural so I can be loc’d doing the same if I had to. Being transparent I’m not gonna lie I was disappointed seeing this, but can understand people being loc’d for 10 plus years and wanting change so I will get over it
I’m guilty as charged. I made it 8 months into my loc journey and really REALLY missed my fro in its healthy state. I tried doing crochet hair styles on top of my locs and REALLY did not like the way it laid. My braid down pattern was too limited.
The other reason is that I could not access my full scalp and I have dandruff issues. It started to feel gross in very specific parts no matter how often I washed.
The final reason is that my parting was uneven af. I had some locs near my edges that were already being strained by the weight of the budding locs.
So I decided to comb them out. I can always temporarily go back to a loc look using faux locs. If I ever start them again, I will go to a different loctician and ask for far more locs than 70.

OMGOSH! 😀😉 I am almost 18 months in and at about the 12 month mark, thought about starting over once because I installed with two strand twists but felt I should have started with braidlocs because the twists formed horrible bunching. But I decided to just trust the process and ride it out. So glad I kept going. My locs are looking really good now! A lifer here!! 😍🤩😍

I am so glad you left this comment. I am at 17 months mark and I like my locs. I could not go back to loose natural. However, I did start with two strand twists as well and some of my locks are bumpy/ lumpy. So it's good to know that they will overtime will get better. Thanks for sharing your journey.
I agree sis! Another reason is that natural hairstylist are goin viral with their simplified wash and go routines and the girlies are feeling fomo! If i wanted to go back to loose hair i would just cut it and start over. Aint nobody got time to be combing out locs😂

I have had locs well over 10 years. I like anyone with hair can imagine do not love them every day but they are still the best hair decision I ever made. I am not into styles and love to be in water. I knew from day one it was for life.

A few years ago, I combed out mine so I could correct the parting. I'm not a stickler on "crispy" parts but I do have to have healthy loc sizes. This is where it's good to know the density of your hair on every area of your scalp. Needless to say, lesson learned and my locs today are flourishing. Great topic!
I had mine combed out by a professional at about 6 months in to correct size and shape and immediately had it redone. No regrets. Now I'm planning to comb out the ends because I've always loved the way my ends curl.

I love my locs I don’t miss my loose natural hair at all that was way more work way more time, consuming and way more of a headache. I’ve been loose natural. My whole life only been locked for two years, and I am loving it.
This was so dope! I left the crack in 99’ and loc’d in 2004 until 2021. For 16 that became a part of my identity and I NEVER thought I would cut them. After my granny passed, My body’s response to the loss caused my locs to thin a bit. I felt like my locs literally were weighing me down. I cut not combed cus all the grief and loss was in my hair. Maybe the journey will bring me back again one day ❤
I’m combing out my last 14 locs that I installed on myself after 5.5 years and as much as I loved them I’m tired of the excess weight of them on my neck, my hair not drying in a reasonable amount of time and I genuinely miss the lightness I feel with my natural hair. I didn’t notice how heavy my hair was until I combed out half my head and how much I missed getting to see my grey hair come in as I’ve gotten older. I’ve done the full gamut of hair styles from perms to twa and now locs but after going through grief and loss, my locs are a marker of a dark time of my life that I’m not in anymore.
Before I decided to begin my loc journey, I wore a buzz cut for 2 years, after stopping years of relaxers. Now I'm 10 years into my loc journey. There's no turning back for me. I'm one of the "parts don't matter to me" people. As long as my hair and scalp are healthy and moisturized I could care less about the "grid".
I am currently combing out my locs after 3 years.
I had loose curly hair and find that having locs is higher maintenance than loose hair. It’s not what people think. Also, they get so heavy over time and i’ve been having a lot of headaches because of the weight.
It took me 6 hours one time to style my hair and it made me realize how time consuming it is.
Also people don’t mention of the lints that can get caught in your hair and it’s more difficult to dry than loose hair.
After 3 years the lint is why I’m in the process of combing mines out. The back has so much white lint !! 😢
@@Valley__It is the oils and product that most people with locs put in their hair which causes lint/debris to embed and remain in the loc. I don’t know who came up with putting all these oils in our hair and worry about so much moisture. Did our parents put oil or grease in our hair for maintenance? Go ahead and learn the valuable lessons.

You are right having locks is not a joke my first year I learned the biggest lesson ever I left conditioner in my hair by the product of Cantu the whole day till the next day, with a scarf wrapped over it the next day I tried to rinse it out, and my hair smelled like mildew for the next four years I pushed through and kept detoxing my hair and I’m nine years strong. within seven years I started combing out the ends because it was the ends of my first year of having them built up of mildew so some are shorter than the others and my profile picture does me no justice, but they are very beautiful and healthy today I am nine you’re strong The journey has been real. I started them to have a sense of my ancestors when they were captured during slavery days because they were forced to undo their natural beauty which is their crown and I long for the crown so I stuck through and it was well worth it.

Seeing the same trend, it not about the fade but the lifetime vibes. I've been locd for a year & 5 months some people have told me I've inspired them to start locs.
I am on my 3rd loc journey and the reason the others didn’t last passed 6 months and less is because I couldn’t get passed looking at the butterfly effect and lumps that happens to my hair texture. I mean holes so big you can fit a pencil…this 3rd time I started with a hair dresser which I did use a hair dresser before but this time after about 4 months I took over the situation because I was hoping she would keep the lumps from coming but she was just rolling over them and putting me under the dryer for hours and piling brown gel in my hair! More than necessary! Keeping me at the hair dresser for like 7 hours! I started doing my own damn hair finishing in 2 hours unless I have to dye my greys. My hair was getting abused at the hair dressers! There all day like I worked there😂😂😂😂😡so anyhow I have learned to accept my lumps and I’m still locked 8 months now and have no intentions of giving up now. I don’t want to go back to the loose natural. I like easy maintenance and for me this is easier accept for retwist time. Some days I still hate the lumps but my hair is becoming more uniform as I continue to retwist. I’m so looking forward to the loose bun life! Even with blow dryer hair I would wear buns. I love seeing black people with locs in our beautiful naturalness❤❤❤

I was natural before locing my hair. But I went through a period of just not doing anything to my hair. I love my locs soooo much but my scalp is so inflamed and nothing is helping. But I will say that they have helped me to embrace my natural hair in general and not care how big it gets when it dries or how the curls look. My locs were perfect to me, they were all sizes. Far from perfect. I’m def going to miss them. They increased my confidence in myself and just not giving af about other people’s opinions.

I've been natural since 1996. Locs are a serious commitment that I'm still not ready for, but I'm considering it. In the mean time, I love taking care of and styling my loose natural hair.
A lot of the girls combing out their locs, gor locs because the algorithm was showing them beautiful locs (ironically) during lockdown aha, myself included! And im ready to get rid of mine too, mainly because of imbedded link which really bothers me and I want a straight hair look (So yes spot on two points you raised!)
I just recently combed my 3 month old locs out. Trusted a family member to start me and she didn’t do the size or the parts that I asked for. I refused to be unhappy and I’m gonna have these for the rest of my life. Plus it took me 5 days to combine them out. If I ever decided I didn’t want them anymore I’m cuttin them bad boys off🫡

Currently combing out my locs, my mother told me to lock my hair because I have a sensitive scalp and don’t like my hair getting done. Gat locks she said, it will always be presentable she said, it’s less work and maintenance than keeping it loose she said. Well I say she was wrong I can’t brush out my hair whenever I want, I can’t make giant puffs when going out, I can’t quickly oil my hair and change my hair style in the middle of the night so I am combing it out and I will return to the puff regardless of her warnings that wearing my hair in one everyday will make the middle short because I wear a hat to work and can simply comb it out at night and wear a deflated Afro or granny plaits to work
I love my locs! Had them for 3 years. Unfortunately, I have postpartum hair loss. I am going to wait a few months after combing them out to go back to locs

I moisturize my locs from the inside out, so I don’t do products I understand that this isn’t the case for many people.. my locs aren’t above all lol however I do the inner work and they are thriving to my liking! Wouldn’t dare pick a new set! I’m in this for the long haul. I understand we change as people but it’s a far fetched idea for me! It’s hair, but it’s deep for me! My parting is off working from more of a free form synthetic locs that I converted to human hair loc extensions. However, I'm NOT giving up on my locs, I love them! ♥️
I had locs before but I took care of them badly with bleaching no maintenance and I CUT them out. It was so badly bleached and locs were falling out and my hair was so damaged that I just shaved my head clean bald & started over. I learned so much about myself with a bald head. I was so young back then but being older now with the knowledge, time,resources and money I have, I want to start over my journey. My hair is at a doable length and natural for me to just add human hair loc extensions. But this time around I’ll only bleach the ends and not the entire head multiple times (if I even do decide to bleach, I love having dark brown, black hair) The loc journey isn’t for everyone and if people want to not experience it, that’s their prerogative and it doesn’t take away from their black or woman identity. I was a afro Girl but ive been loc'd For 2 years. 😭 i miss my Afro alot but im to inlove with my locs ive wanted since i was 17 and wanted my mother to start mines. She didnt believe that id keep them in because i always took down braids after a week but she finally did mines at 26 and here i am 2 years later💜💜💜
I started my locs in 2017 with mini braids by 2021 they were mid back length and beautiful but some of the roots were not strong enough in my opinion espically in my crown area so December of 21 comb them out. I restarted my journey again August 1 2022, this time with the much thicker roots and locs and I am very happy with them no turning back.
I’ve been loc’d for 4 years in August. I did them myself and want to start over smaller and neater. I’m either going to comb them out or cut them off. Just like before, I want to take control and do it myself because I hate waiting when I have a nagging urge to do something for myself. It feels like I’ve accomplished something for me by me and that’s a win.
I’m 2.5 years loc’d and the journey has been beautiful. I started my journey knowing if and when I decided my journey was over, I was NOT combing them out. I have not the time.
I started my journey after a really low point in my life, and they have done more for me than I ever expected. At this point, the weight is a lot and my scalp is suffering. Planning to cut them for my 35th in a few weeks but will likely be back because I truly love my loc’d hair.
I just made 20 years of being loc’d. At 48 I’m in full throttle menopause and am noticing my roots are thinning. I also developed dermatitis and am unable to clear my scalp of the scales and scabs while loc’d. The main reason is I recently sprained my neck washing my behind length locs and the struggle is no longer worth it. I love being natural but it’s time to revert back to my big afro ✊🏾

I loved my microlocs, got many compliments on them everyday. But I started them a year ago at the hardest time of my life. Dealing with postpartum depression, being jobless and going through EMT school. Now a year later I’ve been an EMT for almost a year, have my own home and a beautiful relationship with my son who’s almost 2. I want to release that energy and let my full mane flourish again.

I combed out the locs in my profile picture. I started them and my parts were not the best. I was not sure of the direction of the 2 strand twists so they were not always retwisted in the correct direction, which caused some thinning. I don’t plan on making those mistakes again.
I want to start my kids locs over so we are slowly combing them out but babeeeee I can’t imagining these sister locs ever coming out

I’m taking my sisterlocs out after 13 plus years because of thinning locs and to much scalp started to show although I combined my locs two years ago 6 months ago I cut them off from waist length to shoulder length. I have removed the last row of locs in the back to see how the hair will react. I’m surprise because I never hear about people removing locs because they are thinning and yet I see many locs that are thinning.
The thought of combing out my locs has crossed my mind but i know it's not a true thought so I disregard it. I went "natural" about 18 years ago, cut my hair down to about an inch(I'd done it before) the plans this time was to get locs as I'd wanted them for sometimes but I realize I wasn't ready. So after about 14 years of a puffball, I cut it again wore a somewhat tapered swoop do than a little over a year knew I was ready for my locs. But first I braided it with medium braids down to mid back to get use to the weight and 6 months later started my locs. It's been 4 years and I love them, yes, I have thought of letting them go but those thoughts are usually when the refresh redo has grown out, I'm picking out lint which I rarely get or a special event I'm to go to occurs and I don't know how to style it, I do my hair myself unless one of those special occasion happens, I don't know what to quite do with it than I go to my niece who's been a beautician for over 20 years. Honestly, after 4 years I only wash and condition my hair if it's retwist time I put about a tablespoon of leave in conditioner(usually has rosewater, black castor, shea butter or something else good doe my hair in it)mixed with about a tablespoon of hair oil in a bottle of 16 oz water spray bottle to hydrate as I retwist and I don't part it i gather the hair neatly around the loc and retwist. I like different size locs but they are mostly medium size. Now that they are about mid back I've realized I have to do more. So a few months ago I purchased a soft hood dryer, can't let it naturally dry as much any more due to the length it will sour(learn that one time the hard way). Also, i will be oiling my scalp and new growth more once a month. Retwist is about every 3-4 months so I'm hopeful that extra oil will keep the older hair looking more conditioned and hydrated. Locs are a commitment in my opinion and experience and something not to enter into lightly.

I’ve had freeform locs for 6 years now, I’m cutting off 3/4 the length and combing out the rest because they’re so thick and have gotten so long that after washing, if I’m not willing to sit under the hooded dryer for 2 hours, they WILL have water trapped inside and gain mildew (and i literally live in Florida lol). i’ve noticed I’ve been starting to neglect washing my hair simply because I dread that process so much so I’m doing this for my mental health and for the health of my hair. I probably will go back to locs, sooner than later, but I’ll make them thinner this time around.
I got sisterlocks in 2020. After about 3 months I combed them out. I wasn’t feeling the ugly stage and I lacked patience. Now I’m reconsidering getting them again and having the patience to see them mature.

As a formally loc’d currently free natural, when the time came for change I just cut them because combing them out leaves you with natural hair that is severely damaged from that process (no matter how much conditioner you use). Rather than deal with that, I just started over. I’ve been thinking of what’s next for me. The length I have now (slightly past shoulders) makes it so convenient that I’m hesitant to do something I’ll regret. I’ll probably just teach myself to braid my own hair to add some variety to my routine.
I just combed out my 5 years locs yesterday and this is the second time ive combed out my locs and the reason behind it is because i change my hair each time i want to change as a person. My hair is my personal growth and change

I combed out my first set cause I wanted them smaller. I cut off my first set due to damage and now I’m currently on my third set after doin research on how to properly care for them. I put so much love in my hair this time I want my hair to not be constantly manipulated and let it do what it does and even if I comb or cut this set off which I’ll never do again I’m goin on a fourth journey cause my scalp is used to not being combed out and I love how much love I show myself no matter the phase 🥰🤎
I have 4c locs and while the curly type 3 boho look is cute, my hair doesn’t do that and I love it lol for me I never called it an ugly stage because it wasn’t. It was transformation. The whole process is part of the journey. Locs are not a style they’re a LIFEstyle to be embraced! ❤
Now, I am currently in the process of combing them out after 4 years ((after NEVER thinking I would)). Energetically it was feeling like it was time for them to go and I was wondering why I was feeling that, but I recently got divorced and I’ve had them the length of my previous marriage and it’s time for the new. My locs got me throughhhh some thangs! I’m still encouraging friends to get them ((who are gonna be down for it)).

I stopped retwisting almost a year ago to grow out my fro before chopping my locs off. Reason being is that I want micro locs. They look beautiful to me and much more versatile than the size I have now. You can mask how bad you need a retwist better when the locs are smaller 😂😂
I've been locd for a little over 7 years. I did my research and chose a size I wanted. I still love my pics, but I had them colored a few years ago but did not take care of them. I'm now thinking of cutting the color and combing them out to transition to microlocs. Not interested in loose hair at all but I would like the diameter of my locs to be a tadbit thinner than they are now.

Not gone lie, I'm only a year into my journey and I have high top locs. Sometimes I feel very discouraged because I hardly see ANY women with high top locs & it makes me worried that maybe it wasn't the right choice. Or maybe I should just do a full head of locs. But the hubs has kept me encouraged & he loves my high top locs. Guess I just wish I saw more women with high tops locs so I don't feel so alone or feel like the only people I can relate to is the fellas. But I'm gonna ride this journey out & see where it takes me. With my high top locs, guess I'll be a unicorn 🦄 😂❤

I been loc'd almost 10yrs and thinking about combing them out. I got them because this was 1 style I hadn't tried. Also wanted to see if I could grow my hair longer in a permanent protective style. I definitely miss being a loose natural but not all the maintenance
I just combed mine out two days ago because I wanted to do something different. Im shocked I kept my hair locd for almost 2 years. ❤

Since I was a kid, I’ve had pressed out hair and always had a good length of hair until I was older. Secondly, relaxers🙄Dyed my hair etc… I didn’t start wearing extensions until I was 27 because I’ve always had a decent length. My hair became damaged due to relaxers and fake hair, I didn’t have many options left and I’ve always liked having hair.! So, I wanted to try something new to me old to y’all😂 Either I was going to cut it again or get loc’d.I’ve started my loc journey back in April if this year and I love the process journey. I’ve never seen my hair grow that fast within a couple months. I might comb it out years later when I have those Damien Marley locs😂
Ive been locd for almost 5 years. I’m about to comb out mine because of a persistent scalp dermatitis issue that is really hard to treat with my locs. In order to treat it properly I have to wash 1-2 a week and it’s been horrendous to deal with 😢. Plus I need to asses the health of my hair and if there’s any thinning
I feel you Bonnie on the dermatitis issue. It’s runs rampant in the loc community, so your not alone. I know it’s a PAIN to deal with, but it sounds like you are doing the proper steps to get rid of it. Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Its interesting to me that so many people want locs for length. I'm 2yrs in and once they get a certain length, I'm trimming them down. I know that sounds crazy but i like them around collarbone length. Plus I love the ease of locs but don't want the weight. When I am ready for something new I'll chop them all off.
The biggest trigger for combing out my locks recently was TSA feeling up my scalp wherever I travel to. And everyone would gawk at me.

@@LocinwithCB Oh yeah. Unfortunately, I've always had TSA agents giving me an unsolicited head massage almost every time I travel. 😑
You know what’s crazy: I purposely wear my locs down when I go thru TSA to avoid the dreaded loc Pat down. It’s so terrible
#3 is the reason I’m currently combing out my daughters and starting over. They’re parts are all over the place and some locs are thicker than others. Plus my oldest daughter (8) is becoming self-conscious because she sweats her retwist out within days. So this time, we’re going with interlocked microloc with an actual grid. I’ve been loc’d for 12 years now!
I also will had to the last point that I didn’t realize how much consistency locs need. Wash every two weeks. Retwist every 4-8 weeks. Other than that they will matt together at the root 😅. Water and oil atleast every other day! Some of us who were lazy before with our haircare routine are in for a round awakening. Locs is like going to hair care bootcamp! 😅

@@LocinwithCB Yes indeed! My sister loc’d my daughters hair during the pandemic. She was 9 years old. I thought I was done with doing hair for some reason! Oh heck nawwww!! Forced me to take better care of my babies hair for sure! More than I ever did when her hair was loose. I always just did pony tails as I was always working and that is all the time I had for her hair. Her hair was even breaking off around the edges and in the middle from too much pony tail wearing. But these locs were life changing for the both of us! With Locs her hair is always DONE! You just have to maintain that consistent schedule and the hair will flourish! I even locd my hair a year afterwards. Best decision ever! Forced me to take proper care if my hair. ☺️
