Though many bands have tried, no one articulates the real apocalypse humanity is facing as vividly and succinctly as CATTLE DECAPITATION. With 2019’s Death Atlas, they reached the apex of this, perhaps leading some to believe they had no place left to go beyond such an achievement, but alas, they return with Terrasite, which is as bold a statement as they have ever made.
“After a record like Death Atlas, you have to make a turn,” notes guitarist Josh Elmore. “Everything about that album - the concept, artwork, music, etc, was a final statement. The only way to move forward is rebirth. In approaching the newest record, it was not only necessary to keep the musical trajectory the band has been aiming towards since the beginning, but also to further explore the ambient/textural elements that were part of Death Atlas.”
As such, Terrasite pushes their sound further into more epic and varied territory, and in the hands of vocalist Travis Ryan the governing concept takes a new and disturbing direction. “I wanted to do the 180° opposite of Death Atlas. I already had the concept idea from years back and since Death Atlas was so dark and brooding, I wanted a completely opposite effect - I wanted this to take place in the daylight. I’ve always found daytime horror to be really unsettling so I wanted to make sure what was going on on the cover took place in the light of day, which also finds its place within the lyrics.”
The title is a word invented by Ryan that brings together “Terra-“ meaning “earth” and “-site” derived from the Greek word “-sitos” which means “food.” “The combination of the two means ‘earth-eater.’ It’s a metaphor for humanity’s role in the destruction of the planet and is a play-on-words of the very fitting word ‘parasite.’”
This is vividly brought to life in the artwork by longtime collaborator Wes Benscoter (Vader, Kreator, Bloodbath, Hypocrisy). “We see the nymph stage of this human/cockroach hybrid that is more of a fully grown being that has just molted from its ootheca stage, startled, confused, frightened but also pissed off.
The band once again worked with producer Dave Otero (Cephalic Carnage, Allegaeon), who knows the members’ individual styles and how to coax the best out of them, bringing in Tony Parker of Midnight Odyssey to handle piano and synths.
    LYRICS:
Hell hath wrought upon this earth
From the desires of the patriarch
To carry thine name unto the dawn
A hapless spawn to go on and on and on
A swift and deadly virus has once again emerged
Blessed upon humankind to control the surge
    We are the scourge
One more host to transmit death
One more ghost shaped from my breath
    Human beings they never learn
    Even as their houses burn
    We are infections
    We are pathogens
    We are assassins
    The gluttonous factions
    Curve never flattens
    when the population fattens
What a wondrous life this would have been
    But I’m outnumbered
    Like the stars at night
    There’s so many of us
    that need to die
    Like a swarm of flies
    There’s too many of us
    We came to destroy
We’re alive to cause abject suffering
    The troops are deployed
    ultimately, unanimously outnumbering
    Live to feast upon everything
    feed to dilapidate our surroundings
    enveloped by kindred societies
    Evil, corrupt heterogeneities
From the pupa to a nymph
molting each stage of our lives til cold and stiff
    Now thriving terrasites, dramatic shift
Now as a parasite humanity persists
What a wondrous life this would have been
    But I’m outnumbered
    Like the stars at night
    There’s so many of us
    That need to die
    Like a swarm of flies
    There’s too many of us
    We need to die
Can this vengeance please be mine?
    A virus emerged
    To control the surge
    A virus emerged
    We become the scourge

That discourse that we are many and that is the problem is a mistake, the problem is an ambitious minority. What Cattle says is not far from what Malthus said and what Gates' imbecil says. But no matter how I love Cattle's music, I think it serves to make some unaware reflect on their position on earth, even if they are not from the most disgusting minority that history has ever known.

I wonder if these dudes, with all their cynicism and nihilism, were stupid enough to trust the government and get the vaccine lmao virus was a bioweapon and our governments made us all inject a fucking bioweapon with a vaccine that has wider systemic distribution of the virus than the actual wild virus it's supposed to protect against

@@metalcontent A few people, or a "minority", didn't deforest the US by 75% since 1600, dump enough trash to form an island in the Pacific twice the size of Texas, or eradicate 60% of all wildlife on the Earth in the last 50 years. We all play our parts in the destruction of the Earth. Only primitive tribes with little to no contact with civilization and still using stone tools get to point the finger elsewhere. I'm sure you're talking about politicians and oil tycoons and CEOs, but they're powerless without us worshiping them and buying what they're selling. And a handful of rich people didn't give us 8,000,000,000 people eating, breeding, and dumping on the world.

You can tell the label really believes in this band now. They aren't using their logo anymore, they want people to know the bands name. And rightly so. This may well be their finest work to date. That chorus may be their best yet, and that is saying something. Pure art. They are still using their body horror metaphors, but somehow transcending what they have done before. Somehow this is a perfect blend of Death Atlas and The Anthropocene Extinction. This is incredible.

Fucking love Cattle Decapitation since I heard them when I was 13 years old. I have really enjoyed reading Travis' lyrics and how they have changed and evolved over time just makes me smile. Such a creative and infecting sound that just always keeps me coming back for more. I love how they have pretty much mastered fusing Goregrind-ish sounding break downs with black metal-ish sounding riffs/ambience. Perfect blend of brutality and meaning. This is the best song I've ever heard from Cattle Decapitation. Scourge of the Offspring, No Future, Tooth Enamel and Concrete, Deadmeal, and pretty much everything from Death Atlas which is my favorite album but I think this one might take its place. @@TadeuLevy It was the video director and the gaffer, it's not hard to hit pause and read, dude. Besides, does it matter who put Travis's lyrics in the prompts and chose the best ones? the entire critique of AI generated art is that it uses other's peoples work as the basis of it's output while simultaneously pulling opportunities out of the marketplace. I don't pretend to know the budget Metal Blade gave for this video and I empathize with the thought that band in this genre isn't rolling in dough, but it sounds like either a. you haven't really considered the economic and intellectual property arguments of visual media artists or b. you frankly don't care and are making a bad faith argument for it.
Flip the situation: a low-mid budget indie horror movie (like Shudder tier, I feel like that's a decent analogue to Metal Blade Records) decides to AI generate some death metal for their soundtrack instead of paying for a real death metal band's music... to me that's just kind of lame.
It's hard enough for artists out there, and it's also really cool when underground/upcoming artists gain exposure through collaboration (as long as they're not only paid in exposure). Times are hard out here for everyone, but if we lease our creativity out to AI it's just going to cause a great flattening in output. It's a valid topic of conversation.

I was listening to my Cattle Decapitation playlist on Spotify omw to work there other day on shuffle, it jumped from a track from Humanure to a track off Death Atlas. It's insane how different it is, yet how clear is it they're both Cattle tracks. Travis' melodic vocals, and the shift towards more melodic parts is something I think only they could've pulled off as impeccably as they have. It's the single best evolution they could've gone with. Terrasite is already 10/10.
