    In this video I show you exactly how to change your Automatic Transmission Fluid on your Isuzu Mu-x, Isuzu D-max, Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Prado, Toyota Hilux and multiple other vehicles. Changing the transmission fluid is a job that is often overlooked and forgotten during servicing. Unfortunately this can result in large repair bills and major issues when it comes to your Automatic Transmission. It is a good idea to change or flush your transmission oil approximately every 60-80,000km depending on the driving conditions that the vehicle is put under. If you do a lot of towing or 4wding then it may be a good idea to change that fluid sooner.
    I use Castrol Transmax Multivehicle ATF which is a fully synthetic DEXIII universal automatic transmission fluid. There are multiple different oils available and you can pick your oil depending on your budget and also your personal preference. It is important to have between 8 and 16L of transmission fluid to carry out the transmission service. This is because we need to change the oil out of the transmission sump multiple times to bring the oil quality back up to a good level.
    To change your transmission fluid you will require some basic hand tools, spanners, sockets, ratchets, 5mm Allen key, train pan, small oil pump and gloves. I show you how to change your transmission oil in a few simple steps. Changing your transmission oil is definitely a DIY job that you can carry out at home with some simple tools. If your fluid is very dark however you may require a transmission oil flush from a transmission specialist workshop.
    Here is a quick guide to changing your transmission oil -
    Step 1- Drive vehicle and get up to operating temp, approx 15-20mins
    Step 2- Remove 24mm fill bung from drivers side of transmission
    Step 3- Remove 14mm drain bung from bottom of transmission
    Step 4- Catch oil in drain pan
    Step 5- Jack vehicle up to get out any extra oil left over
    Step 6 -Measure drained transmission oil
    Step 7- Refill transmission through fill bung with same amount of oil drained out
    Step 8- refit and tighten drain and fill bungs
    Step 9- Drive vehicle again and repeat steps 2-8 until fluid looks clean and clear
    Step 10- After final oil change go through gears, holding for 5 seconds each
    Step 11- Run vehicle and ensure trans temp is between 50-60 degrees
    Step 12- Remove check bung and ensure small stream of oil comes out
    Step 13- Refit and recheck all bungs and clean down transmission
    Step 14- Final Road test vehicle and re check for any leaks
    Step 15- Enjoy 60-80000km of trouble free motoring!
    Transmission oil changes are a very important part of vehicle servicing and need to be maintained every 60-80000km. By keeping our transmission oil clean and fresh we will ensure that the transmission shifts smoothly even when cold. It also will reduce the risk of having big repair bills down the track if we ever have an issue with the transmission.
    Cheers Guys :)

    P.S- It's also a great idea to change through the gears a few times after changing the fluid to circulate the fluid through the valve body. Change through all gears holding for 5 to 10 seconds each gear to flush out the valve body before and after changing the oil.
    Cheers guys!

    My personal tip, if you ever use your oil fill pump for other fluids such as differential and transfercase oil, make sure you thoroughly clean it out before using it for ATF. If you do all your servicing yourself regularly consider getting a second pump just for ATF. Seems like a bit of a faf but they only cost like $10, and just avoids any possibility of contamination.
    Another thing is call you local dump/transfer station to see if you can drop off the used ATF oil, some only accept engine oil. If you're in the country a lot of the time your local mechanic will gladly take it. Never ever pour it in the drain.

    Thanks very much Nick, I agree you are a life saver, your instructions will work for my Navara too. The Nissan workshop manual was basically useless for the AT. I don't have my MU-X yet but I am sure it will work well. Your videos are worth more than just about anything else out there as far as instruction and useful information goes, so very much appreciated indeed. There are even experienced mechanics that don't know about your trick on how to get the correct AT fluid level. Neat, that will take away the guess work next time I do my vehicles. (your method it explains the jinglish found in the workshop manuals). Shall be watching the transfer case video next, then about LEDs, etc - all very informative, all very helpful!

    Great video very well made and easy to follow the process.
    my Dmax is only 80thausand kms, and was thinking to do a transmission fluid change, as it has had a good work out towing and off-roading. My trans was working fine but after the fluid change it is now smoother the difference is quite remarkable .
    thanks to you it was an easy / straightforward job.

      If you did change the filter they usually come with either a rubber or cork gasket. Rubber gasket is my preference but the cork gaskets are ok too. You can use a little bit of ultra grey or black silicone sealant with the gasket if you want but its not necessary.

    To ensure correct oil level was transmission in park or neutral and did you check immediately after the last oil change?
    Thanks for your response

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  2 роки тому +2

      Check the level in park. The oil check should be done when the oil is about 50 degrees or so. What I usually do is after I'm finished my final fill is get my tools ready for a minute or 2 after starting the car then jump under and check the level.

  • @E.Vancina88
    @E.Vancina88 Рік тому +4

    Great vid. If you have a front mount trans oil cooler, you can change the ATF oil by doing the following:
    1. Put the car into neutral.
    2. Take off one end of the oil cooler hose and put into an empty bucket/container of at least 5L.
    3. Turn your car on and it will pump out the oil, approx 4L before it starts to spatter out.
    4. Turn car off, refill with fresh oil & repeat 1-2 more times until fully flushed.
    My car has a filler hole in the engine bay so makes it super easy to replace the ATF fluid. This gets all the fluid from the torque converter and sump aswell.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  2 роки тому

      For a manual transmission you just remove the fill bung and then the drain bung. Then refit the drain bung once fully drained. Then refill transmission untill oil starts to spill out of the fill bung. Then refit and tension fill bung. Easy!

  • @cliffbooth7075
    @cliffbooth7075 11 місяців тому +5

    You’re making the transmission fluid change more time consuming for yourself & contaminating new fluid the way you’re doing it. What you did initially with the first drain & refill is correct, but then what you need to do is remove the at fluid outgoing hose where it connects to the radiator. But first grab an empty 3L milk container and measure to the 2L mark and draw a horizontal line on the container, place the container in a bucket or something so it won’t tip over & just incase an accident happens & you over fill it. Place the atf hose into the bucket. You can extend the length of the hose with clear plastic tubing if need be. Now start your car & cycle through a few gears & back to P. Quickly jump out and check the fluid level. When it’s about to reach the 2L mark, turn the car off. Pump 2L back onto the car or the same as what came out & repeat this process until the fluid starts coming out clean & bright red. The system holds 10L, so cycle 10-11L through. Deliberately overfill by 1-2L to make sure you definitely have enough fluid to drain out of the check level hole. And then follow whatever process you use to make sure your AFT is at the correct temp to remove the check level bolt. The have the ATF reach 50 deg you’d need to idle the car from cold in your garage for around 15 minutes in Park. Takes a while to get ATF temps up. Holden Trailblazer owners out there can access the exact ATF temperature reading in the settings on the dash cluster. The Prados have a brilliant procedure you can follow without a scan tool to make sure the ATF is at the exact correct temp. You start the car & bridge two different diagnostic ports up in the driver’s footwell with a metal paper clip (top row of pins is 4th from the left, bottom row is 5th from the left), then that puts the car into service mode with the dash cluster lighting up randomly & rapidly like a Xmas tree, then you cycle one gear per second from P down to 1, then back up to N, then N to D and back again 6-8 times until the red ATF light comes on. It’ll flicker then go out when the fluid temp is between 43 & 46 deg Celsius (or 45-49, can’t quite remember) which gives you a minute or two window to get the fluid level exactly right.

      I think the valve body upgrade and cooler upgrade is a good idea if you are chasing big HP out of the vehicle or do alot of towing. If you aren't doing either of those things then there's probably not much reason to upgrade.

Same, my dealer was not worried at all and did not recommend to change the fluid , (my Dmax is only 80thousand kms ) for au$100.00 it's worthwhile the trouble .

    I know this is a year old now, but what about taking the return line of and draining that (while in gear for a few seconds) it would mean you don't dilute your new oil as much and probably means less bottles? Just curious.

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  11 місяців тому +1

      You can rig up hoses to the feed and return, suck fresh oil into the system and drain old oil out. It is a little more difficult to do and setup and if you stuff it up you could damage the transmission. As your transmission wears in over time and learns shift patterns according to oil condition. If you flush all of the fluid out for new fluid it can sometimes cause issues. This is a safer method to avoid any issues. It increases the oil condition but doesn't change it completely. 🙂

    ScanGauge have just informed me again thast they still cannot measure the autotransmission temp for the new model DMax and neither can they do the EGT as well. This is very disappointing for me. Mine is a Sept 2020 model, they told me the same thing when I bought it, almost two years later they have done nothing. I regularly tow a caravan and want to monitor gearbox temp and EGT, any suggestion on how to do this with my LSU DMax? • @LowRangeNick

      Definately shouldn't be coming out the fill bung. With vehicle idling and transmission at 40-50 degrees fluid should be gently trickling from check bung. Automatics are very different to manual gearboxes.

      @jarradgreen6741 for that setup you will want to drain fluid and catch it in a container with measurements. Then fill through the dipstick tube the same amount. Then repeat if fluid is still dirty. Then get up to operating temp and check fluid is on hot mark on transmission dipstick.
