This was one of my favorite games on Saturn. I loved that you could break opponents' armor and beating people with guitars, c'mon! Sadly the Dreamcast sequel never made it to the US. I think because, by that point, we were over hair metal and rollerblades.

You also need to review Fighters Megamix at some point too. Combines Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighter 2 into one game while adding some new moves and elements (like sidestepping) that were going to be in VF3 to the combat system. Buncha hidden characters too like the Hornet from Daytona USA, Janet from Virtua Cop (complete with useable gun), and Rent-a-Hero. You all remember Rent-a-Hero, right? No? Aww...
I played this game more than Tekken 2 and Virtua Fighter 2 when it was in my arcade. Too bad it didn't stay as long as I would have liked. Easily one of my favourite arcade games back then.
I remember this being one of those games I never could get my hands on; i thought the game looked really good, the fighter mechanics being so similar to VF meant this game was great.
I played a sequel to this game before the first and once I got my hands on arcade F.V. I was surprised how good the original was. I never played this on SS, though. It reminds me of one of the GREATEST fighting games - Bloody Roar 2, power moves and air recovery work really well in both.
My Mom bough a Sega Saturn bundle that had all of the popular Sega Saturn games with it, this game was in it(along with Street Fighter Alpha 1,2, Virtua Fighter as well) I can estimate we played this game the most, MORE than the other fightng games mentioned, probably because of its over-the-top presentation, AND the combos were more complex than that of Virtua Fghter's, giving better feeling of accomplishment, the fights were funnier AND you could record the fights as well
Just got this game today. Another "So-So" feeling about it. Waited almost a week to get it. Now that I got it, it'll probably be another week before I play it again.

That's because Honey the Cat actually is based off of Candy. Candy's name in the Japanese release of Fighting Vipers is Honey (no clue why they changed it for the rest of the world). Sonic the Fighters was also a side project developed by some of the Fighting Vipers crew. There's also a Honey the Cat doll in Fighting Vipers opening FMV. And Mark... You seriously dropped the ball! You're obligated to show someone being punched through the glass and off the elevator stage in any FV review!

I donated this game. I also donate nights into dreams with 3D controller and Battle Arena toshinden remix and a copy of Radiant silvergun along with a modded saturn to play it on. I hope he reviews those pretty soon.
My homie and I killed this game when it first came out. I bought it and we battled hella against each other like on VF 2. Some of them were heated too. Imagine literally taking out your frustrations on each other in a video game with every move, every counter, and every win being palpable. Overall we had way more fun battles though and that's what I'll cherish. Good times and good vibes from the 90's. He was my greatest rival, my brother, and my oldest friend. I miss you Zo, I love you bro.
I think we've had enough of the comparaison with Virtua Fighter. Fighting Vipers is NOT a Virtua Fighter 2.0 It's an entire new and short franchise that deserve more than an endless "look alike" Virtua Figher game. For me, The Best fighting game of all time 😊 😊
@kreeddem Yeah I have Fighters Megamix then found this at a flea market, picked it up and realized what's the point? I traded it in a few weeks later. I kept Virtua Fighter 2 though becasue for some reason the music is different in Fighters Megamix.
Yay, the Saturn fighting game that nobody talks about! I prefer its speed and feel to Virtua Fighter's, which makes its relative obscurity all the more tragic.
@Megabine they usually make quick characters you can send flying around and beat a pro with basic moves. Like chun li VS a character like zangief or e honda.
Your assessment at the beginning is strikingly close to the truth. Virtua Fighter wasn't doing as well in the west as Sega was hoping for, so they decided to try and make a similar kind of game that was specifically crafted with the western audience in mind. The result? Same story as Virtua Fighter, it mostly gained traction in Japan.

fighting vipers was awesome hundred times faster then VF and tekken if you spend the time learning a few moves its a awesome game on the arcade picky had pepsi sponsership that I wish made to the saturn though the armor breaking was not as explosive as Cosmic carnage it was fun to see again

this game has a sequel on the dreamcast. plus outside the USA candy whas called honey. there is also a cat vershen of honey witch is a sonic the hedgehog careiter now.
When I first got into this game i was like WOW they have a brown girl in the game. She may not be black, mexican or indian but she's BROWN!!! COOL!!!!!!
Talk abou a game that needs to be remake with today's graphics and special FX. Heck, SEGA should just bring out Fighter's MEGAMiX 2 on next-gen consoles.
You know what would be an awesome package? If Sega bundled the first 4 Virtua Fighter arcade games on a disc (PS3/360), and then included Fighting Vipers as an extra unlockable game.

more sequels, you say? well, please check out Fighting Vipers 2 on the Dreamcast. only released in Japan and Europe but if you have a way to play imports on your DC like a boot disk then check it out. i own it, it has more content, and its pretty affordable for an import. great stuff...and yes, check out Megamix as well like kreeddem mentioned :D

This game was Virtua Fighter Heavy Metal addition, I still feel like this is the best 3D fighter.
I loved this one better than any other fighting game of that era. It was just fun.

Guys, they've remastered this, Virtua Fighter 2, and Sonic The Fighters for the PSN and XBLA in December 2012.

Last Bronx, a Fighting Vipers/Virtua Fighter crossover game, is probably the nearest thing to a sequel. It'd be cool if you got hold of that.
