This game was so popular in the arcade. It was the only game that got my attention at the time and everyone was huddled around it to play against the winner. I remember thinking it was amazing to have tag team and all of the different X-Men and Street Fighter characters. Well done Capcom.
+gedaman Same here. I remember when I first saw the game people were huddle around it. And I was like at awe!!!! I think this game was the turning point for me. I started to look into more street fighter games to get to know the characters more.
referral madness it was popular but it wasn't halo for the xbox also unlike xbox the saturn had many serious flaws some structural no one game could save it.........
This should have been empathized in the review that back in 1997 this blew everything else away. Arcade perfect port that had almost no load times. I paid $75.00 back in 1997 for the game and ram cart. It was worth it. You saw this at the arcades and you could have nearly the same experience at home.
I know this is a 6 year old comment but im about to drop 85 on this complete in box so the price doesn't seem like it went up to much since then so that's good
This was so impressive in its day that I had to buy it on import for my Saturn. It even helped to start my japanese Saturn games collection. And it had Gambit!
Im honored to own this great for the underrated NA Saturn. Near arcade perfection. The Saturn was a 2D powerhouse of a console. Remember inviting all my friends over to play this game and they all went out to buy Saturn's which game stores were already trying to clear them out. Remember buying my for 40 bucks and it was the best 40 bucks I spent those days.
It's always been like that. USA M. Bison is known as Vega in Japan, USA Balrog is known as M. Bison in Japan, and USA Vega is known as Balrog in Japan.
I own this for my sega saturn.I haven't played it in years but I remember when I had to do a cart swap to get the game to load. I couldn't afford the ram+region code breaker combo cart. I got it down to a science after a while lol. Now that I look back I was crazy for swapping while the system was on but the game was worth it. Amazing sound and visuals, perfect speed and sweet controls. Perhaps one of the BEST Sega Saturn games.
I had this game (import) on my Saturn plus the RAM cart. I loaned it to a friend and got the disc back scratched to all Hades. It never worked again after that... and people wonder why I don't loan out games anymore 😞
@stevepauldaws28 While it is true the PlayStation destroyed the Saturn in the west, that definitely did not mean 2D fighters were remotely out of of fashion at the time nor is it today. At least not in the states. I specifically remember going to arcades and waiting in line just to play this game and other 2D fighters while the 3D fighters had relatively short lines.
The number of playable characters is good for a 1996 arcade release. In fact, the whole game is quite an accomplishment for a 1996 release and still holds up today.
You really need a Saturn with the 50/60hz switch too get the most out of this gr8 game, otherwise prepare for massive borders & slowdown, unless you've got a Jap' saturn of course!
@KaraLVRogueLZ I always thought it was awesome how they got the voice actor from the 90's tv series to play the voices of rogue, wolverine, and if I'm not mistaken storm and cyclops. (those two im not sure of, but they sure sound similar)
I have to get this game! I have Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Collection, Nightwarriors, and Vampire Savior for my beloved Saturn. I have to get the rest of the Capcom 2d fighters. Vampior Savior and Alpha 2 are my favorites so far.
The Saturn does a Sagat laugh at the Playstation when it comes to 2D games (except for Dodonpachi, but lets ignore that); it definitely had the edge, its a wonderful system to own.
It's true, it's so easy to rhyme in Japanese that the Japanese invented other forms of poetry that rely on how many syllables are used instead of how similar the words sound.
I imported this game as soon as I could back in the day and im surprised you didn't mention another reason why the Saturn version kicks so much ass: Almost no loading times. When you first start the game there is loading for about 5-8 seconds and after that it runs just as fast as the arcade with no load times.
even though the Saturn wasn't that like in the U.S, between it and the Play Station, the Saturn was superior when it came to fighting games because it had less load time, better frame work and when it came to gameplay; if you bought this game for the PS1, you were cheated out of your money since the tag team system was taken out of it and replaced with the traditional 1 on 1. great review Mark. I have a feeling the next 2 games are marvel superheroes and marvel superheroes vs streetfighter
After Apocalypse does the Saturn game force you to fight your second character? I've played the arcade version as Rogue and Gambit and in the end the coupling I choose fought each other.
Too bad this game was NEVER released outside Japan... Capcom SHOULD'VE ported this game to Dreamcast, along with Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter as two games in one disc....
This is important: If you own a Saturn in PAL format, you still run the risk (even with an action reply cart) that the sound will not play properly on this game and several others that are Japanese exclusives which have their own RAM carts. This is due to the PAL format running at 50hz and NTSC running at 60hz.
I bought the Marvel VS Capcom Origins on PSN and the game called Marvel Super Heroes was in it. What's strange is that it has really awesome fluid animation, even better then Marvel VS Capcom 2 that came much later.
Truly one of the best fighting games ever made. Marvel vs Street Fighter on the Saturn is also great, and has an exclusive Japanese character that wasn't in the arcade in North America. I really wish that Sega brought that 4mb memory expansion out in North America. That was a terrible move on Sega's part.
The SATURN was thee console for 2d fighters & shooters & still is,especially the Capcom games that made use of the 4megabit cartridge that made the conversionsions arcade PERFECT!
Well in the main you've got a point but in the right hands the SATURN could do 3d just fine!I had a PS1 & SATURN & played alot of the same games on both consoles & there were a few 3d titles that were better looking(& more playable)on the SATURN,for example,Duke Nukem3D along with all the FPS's developed by LOBOTOMY GAMES on the SAT' BLEW the PS1 versions away, the 1st Resident Evil looked better on the SATURN along with a fair few other 3d titles.
@MagFlare Model 2 hardware's was perfectly capable of polygon shading, transparency and light sourcing. Like I said, the American model was only designed to use a single 3D instead of both processors and most US programmers could only code 1 processor. That's another myth that Saturn 3D games took up processing power, remember the Saturn had a seperate third processor for addition RAM, which made full use of the 1-4 RAM carts required to run arcade perfect titles.
@tapion567 Plenty. The PSone version was released 6 months late in the US exclusively on PSone since the Saturn was already dead in America by April of 1998. Needless to say, gamers who read reviews of the import Saturn version were insulted by the PSone, the system's lack of RAM slowed down animation frames, made the game sloppy, sluggish, made poor loading times and REMOVED THE TAG TEAM MODE! On the Saturn, its 100% arcade perfect. smooth animation, oragasm of sprites, tag team mode etc.
It was for games like this as to why I always had a preference for the Saturn over the PSX. The 4MB games really flex the Saturn's 2D muscle. The PSX version is certainly playable, but the longer load times, fewer frames of animation, and especially no tag outs really hurt that version imo. The 4MB RAM expansion for the Saturn allows this version to be much closer to the arcade version and much superior to the PSX version. Same for MSH vs SF, SF Zero 3, and Vampire Savior on the Saturn too.
The Saturn was a 2d power house. Which is why the 2d versions are superior to PS1, the problem the Saturn had in the US was that the move to 3d games was on it's way and the PS1 was superior basically because the Saturn 3d was to hard to code. It had some great 3d games, Resident Evil all as good as PS1, but in the end wasn't enough. Saturn was a lot more popular and lasted I believe 2-3 years after it was dead in U.S. which is why there are so many more games in Japan
Bernie Stolar (Sega' president back then) is the reason why these games never left Japan: "The Saturn is not our future," Stolar said [..] The third of Stolar's perceived problems was his Five Star Games Policy, and is often blamed for the death of good Saturn titles in the West. It was put together in an effort to assure top quality, top selling Saturn games for the U.S. market.
Sorry for the late reply...... I own both, PS1 version is slower, loads longer, & can't use both characters, only way to use both characters is by both players choosing the same team but in vice versa, like saying Ryu & Ken vs Ken & Ryu, only in versus mode.. The Saturn version is exactly how the game is supposed to be, it's a perfect arcade port. The little extras were to compensate for the lack of choosing both characters on screen, PS1 wasn't strong enough for that game.
Cammys ma girl, she plays well in this game, I forked over the money for the card after you first mentioned it and this was the first I got for it...to say it's worth it is definitely an understatement. Best consoles for the 2D ports of street fighter was easily the Saturn and Dreamcast, not to mention the older.
One of my favorite games of all time, really this game and mvsc was done better than mvsc2 in terms of quality. The music and sounds are awesome and the characters sprites looks better than the mvsc2 because of the backgrounds being in 2d. I love all capcom fighting games, but this games are legendary to me, i still have the ps1 version and is not bad, it doesnt suffer of slowdowns like this version.
Well, Apocalypse is not suppose to be hard coz if you are really good at this game, Cyber Akuma will appear afterwards and kick your ass. Yes, he is the true last boss.
For me the best SF is SF2 (in many versions), I remember playing Super Street Fighter II Turbo on arcade in my town back in the 90s, and yup! I live in Poland and we had 2 arcade game clubs then in my town, coins flowed through machines and I had gr8 time playing arcade SF II with friends :) and Art Of Fighting and many other SNK/Sega/Capcom games :) too bad that today arcades almost died
I got this game fairly cheap... I think around $12? The case isn't in the vest shape but the CD was flawless. One of my favorite games of all time, and one of the only reasons I bust out the Saturn to this day.
wow, its like night and day looking at this vs the playstation one, the visuals are just much better on this, and the animation is actually smooth, the Playstation one actually has Animation that appears to be as choppy if not more than the old Street Fighter 2 on SNES.
At the time this game came out, 2d fighters were somewhat out of fashion with tekken and virtua fighter being the new direction beat em ups were heading. The Playstation at the time wiped the floor with the Saturn (in Europe at least)in sales and the absolutley brilliant 2d fighter capabilities of the saturn were overlooked. Nowadays people are more appreciative of the saturn which is cool. Additionally Ive just "closed my eyes and thought happy thoughts" and ordered this from Japan, woo hoo!!
This looks awesome. The cost of obtaining it would probably make it too prohibitive but I can see why someone would be willing to spend the money to obtain it.
The comments below me claim that the Sega Saturn version was a lot better than thr PS1 port. I guess I missed out, but I still remember X-Men vs. Street Fighter being a load of fun when I was younger. I think I'll look it up if PSN ever wises up and sells it arcade-style.
@BrutusAlbion DAMN RIGHT! I must have watched that ending like 30 times because it just screams awesome! Now Mark how about review God of War: Ghost of Sparta, then God of War 2 and 3. I'm DYING to see your review of just pure EPIC AWESOMENESS!
l remember seeing this in the arcades, there was always a crowd of like 20 people around the machine wanting a piece of the action...and l was one of them ;-)
That's because he really is for the better part. He's definitely one of the easiest characters to play with, and in the right hands can really decimate your opponents, not to mention the fact that he takes less damage than every other character.
apparently Capcom and Sega were in talks about releasing this game in the west, but disagreed over the pricing of the game ,due to the RAM cartridge being included. needless to say the talks didn't work out. still , this, Marvel vs Street Fighter and Street Fighter Zero 3 are my favourite 2D fighting games on the Saturn
The PS1 port was diabolical which is no surprise as this needed a ram cart to play. It is no shame that the PS1 couldn't do it mind. They shouldn't have bothered though.
Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighters gotta be one of the best fighting games ever, the game is so much much more fun to play with freidsn, the roster is strong, all characters are so unique, i like it better than Marvel vs Capcom
The level with the police in the background was the first level I saw back in the day in the arcades...I stared at it like a slack jawed yokel. I had both the PSX and Saturn when this game was in the arcades and I remember thinking like my Saturn and PSX...day one. Unfortunately, I bought th8s for the PSX...rookie.
That picture of Cyclops and Ryu shaking hands remains as one of the most iconic ones in video game history.
100%
Luv it!
I honestly miss these reviews, makes me sad they no longer make them now :(
Mark's back, bro!
This game was so popular in the arcade. It was the only game that got my attention at the time and everyone was huddled around it to play against the winner. I remember thinking it was amazing to have tag team and all of the different X-Men and Street Fighter characters. Well done Capcom.

gedaman it didn't have any "structural flaws", what the heck are you talking about? lol

Absolutely Amazing
I know this is a 6 year old comment but im about to drop 85 on this complete in box so the price doesn't seem like it went up to much since then so that's good
"if all games on the sega looked like this, there is no reason for buying a PS" You are so freaking right mark!
Gotta love the ending with that sax playing.
One of the best Saturn titles. I love it.
if the US had japan's saturn library, sega might still be making consoles
3:17 I love Cammy
I am from the dark future of 2023, Street Fighter 6 will come out and they put pants on Cammy.
Makes me appreciate the Saturn that I got for Christmas. Seeing these videos is making me go on that hunt for the games and peripherals.
One of my all time favourite fighting games!
If Sega had of released this game and RAM cart in U.S. back in the day, they may have gotten the edge on Playstation.
This was so impressive in its day that I had to buy it on import for my Saturn. It even helped to start my japanese Saturn games collection. And it had Gambit!
Man, the Saturn was great for arcade games, especially 2D. I'm so proud to own one.
Have a copy coming in the mail that was about 32 bucks.
Hope u enjoy it 👍
You should get Street Fighter V Marvel
Just got a copy for $150 on PS1, and thats a good deal. Resellers and nostalgia are messing it all up anymore.
one of the reasons I keep the ol' Saturn around
Those graphics are really impressive. It looks like it could be on the Dreamcast
I used to play this on the arcade when I was like 8, IT WAS AMAZING
Im honored to own this great for the underrated NA Saturn. Near arcade perfection. The Saturn was a 2D powerhouse of a console. Remember inviting all my friends over to play this game and they all went out to buy Saturn's which game stores were already trying to clear them out. It's always been like that. USA M. Bison is known as Vega in Japan, USA Balrog is known as M. Bison in Japan, and USA Vega is known as Balrog in Japan.
A local pizza place still has a working arcade version of this game. Needless to say it's now my favorite place to eat.
Perhaps one of the BEST Sega Saturn games.
the character selection menu music was the shit. probably one of my favorite things about this game
bought it with the 4 mb card limited edition from amazon for the saturn cant wait
Marvel Superheros,Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 3 & VF2 were my favourite fighters on the SATURN.
I wore out my Japanese Saturn pad with this one. Good thing I had a US one :)
absolutely arcade perfect and a beast of a game!
I had this game (import) on my Saturn plus the RAM cart. I loaned it to a friend and got the disc back scratched to all Hades. It never worked again after that... and people wonder why I don't loan out games anymore 😞
This game was a true port of the arcade classic! #kudostocapcomandsega
I imported this game back in the day, and was so happy with it. Never had to deal with the PS1 version.
@stevepauldaws28 While it is true the PlayStation destroyed the Saturn in the west, that definitely did not mean 2D fighters were remotely out of of fashion at the time nor is it today. This game needs to be re released to Wii U or Xbox360. It nearly made me cry that they didnt release an American version for this game.
@KaraLVRogueLZ I always thought it was awesome how they got the voice actor from the 90's tv series to play the voices of rogue, wolverine, and if I'm not mistaken storm and cyclops. (those two im not sure of, but they sure sound similar)
Proud owner of this game and the 4MB cart!
Marvel Super heroes Vs. Street Fighter. I spent so many hours playing this on my Saturn.
+IgoByaGo Yeah.... Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter
IgoByaGo what's the Best Sega Saturn to buy Japanese or American
my neighbours had it on PC a while ago, remember playing it, I was a greet noob at fighting games back in the time
ending the vid with some fan service.... nice
you're gay
I have to get this game! I have Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Collection, Nightwarriors, and Vampire Savior for my beloved Saturn. I have to get the rest of the Capcom 2d fighters. Vampior Savior and Alpha 2 are my favorites so far.
You can also get a Jap SEGA Saturn console and a 4 MB RAM cart and you will have the game running in 60hz!
The Saturn does a Sagat laugh at the Playstation when it comes to 2D games (except for Dodonpachi, but lets ignore that); it definitely had the edge, its a wonderful system to own.

I have a feeling the next 2 games are marvel superheroes and marvel superheroes vs streetfighter
I got this game coming with the Action replay :D
this game is like sicker than sick! looks friggin good and plays very very smooth, best 32 bit 2d graphics ever. saturn = king
After Apocalypse does the Saturn game force you to fight your second character? I've played the arcade version as Rogue and Gambit and in the end the coupling I choose fought each other.
any game that i get to play my two fave x-women, rouge and storm, i'm there! i like marvel vs. capcom cuz i like to play Megaman&Ironman
Excellent review of a brilliant game - Saturn FTW!!
Too bad this game was NEVER released outside Japan...
Capcom SHOULD'VE ported this game to Dreamcast, along with Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter as two games in one disc....
+RedRanger2001 MSH vs Street Fighter is one if not THE ONE besy favorite for me
I remember seeing this game at my local bowling ally. Such a great game.
This is important: If you own a Saturn in PAL format, you still run the risk (even with an action reply cart) that the sound will not play properly on this game and several others that are Japanese exclusives which have their own RAM carts. Man I was in kindergarten or the 1st grade when my dad gave me this game on the ps1. Takes me back.....
Is the American Sega Saturn region-locked?
Well in the main you've got a point but in the right hands the SATURN could do 3d just fine!I had a PS1 & SATURN & played alot of the same games on both consoles & there were a few 3d titles that were better looking(& more playable)on the SATURN,for example,Duke Nukem3D along with all the FPS's developed by LOBOTOMY GAMES on the SAT' BLEW the PS1 versions away, the 1st Resident Evil looked better on the SATURN along with a fair few other 3d titles.

seeing game like this make me wish sega still made consoles
I remember in 2010 on one of my cousin's birthday's,I saw the Marvel vs Street Fighter Arcade Cabnet right there so I played it and it was so hard!
I had this game for my Saturn when I was in Korea. Had to get the chip tho....

Love your review of this game! Well done Sir!!!
Just found this in an arcade. Love it.
oh yeah 3:20 for Maximum Cammy!
Capcom used to make such good fighting games.
One of the best fighters to bare the CAPCOM name excellent.
wow, its like night and day looking at this vs the playstation one, the visuals are just much better on this, and the animation is actually smooth, the Playstation one actually has Animation that appears to be as choppy if not more than the old Street Fighter 2 on SNES.
the playstation is very good man! The person who said to you that was bad is crazy =D
At the time this game came out, 2d fighters were somewhat out of fashion with tekken and virtua fighter being the new direction beat em ups were heading. Sir, you are my hero
thanks for reviewing my favorite game
i loved this game.
used to play on the ps1 with my uncle.
I think I'll look it up if PSN ever wises up and sells it arcade-style.

my favorite fighting game on the Saturn is probably Power Instinct 3: Groove on Fight... either that or Waku Waku 7.
I just played the arcade version TODAY!!! :D
What TV hookup did you use, component or S-video.
The level with the police in the background was the first level I saw back in the day in the arcades...I stared at it like a slack jawed yokel. Woah, this game looks amazing, great review Mark.
