The goddamn Super K.Os with the tornado taking out a bloody tanker truck and the dinosaur eating the opponent in the middle of a volcano are some of the best animations inf ighting game history.
Legend has it that tanker was from 18 wheeler: American Pro Trucker which came out around the same time
Sega: we need to make VF more stylish to bring it back
IF ONLY THERE WAS SOMEWHERE IN YOUR PORTFOLIO YOU COULD TAKE INSPIRATION FROM
I don't believe SEGA anymore. They are done, out of creativity and ability to make good game ( except like a dragon series). The really SEGA was dead long ago
You might be on to something 🤔 If you needed inspiration, or shoot even characters to _integrate_ to Virtua Fighter to make it interesting, Fighting Vipers is the way to go
And in terms of the reboot, I heard the RGG team was involved. I'm sure they're looking at all possible avenues. I'm not worried lol
@@人生百年渾沌不明 I can't agree with you. Sonic Frontiers, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Alien Isolation, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Super Monkey Ball, Puyo Puyo, Persona 3 Remake and so much more that is available on Steam is top tier quality.
"Mom, can we have Jotaro?"
"No, we have Jotaro at home"
Jotaro at home: (it's just Bahn)
As you can see from the intro credits and listen to the music style, the composer is the same as the Yakuza/Like a dragon series' main composer Hidenori Shoji. His music so good.
Thank you prinny! Sardines for you~
we stan the yakuza composers in this household (especially hidenori shoji for being the og)
It was you mentioning the first Fighting Vipers game in your video about Sega's early fighting game titles that sent me down a rabbit hole which eventually lead to me owning a vintage doll of Honey/Candy. She's probably one of my favorite retro collectibles.
I LOVE Fighting Vipers 2! ♥
This, the Toshinden series (1-4) and the Bloody Roar franchise were maybe not the best 3D fighters out there, but they have a special place in my heart and I would love to see them return!
I salivate when I imagine what a fucking Bloody Roar game would look like with today's graphics and processors.
Ah yes the Secret Sonic Character that has her very own game, I find it fitting that in the Archie Sonic Comics, Honey's story for entering the tournament by Brezzie was just like her story in Fighting Vipers of being a fashion designer & thinks this'll help promote her
This, Virtua Fighter 3tb and Dead or Alive 2 are basicly my 3D fighting game tri-force of this era. I just love this game and how absurd it is.
It's juggle heaven.
I'd like to imagine that if Fighting Vipers ever does get a revival, they'll cut out the middle man when it comes to Honey's name localization and make her full name Honey Candy (or Candy Honey, whichever comes first), kinda like what Capcom did with Charlie Nash.
hd Fighting vipers does reference her old localized name with a new graffiti that says RIP and then the name she doesn't use anymore
The Character designer Imai Toonz was the lead artist for the Production I.G. movie Dead Leaves.
Imai Toons was lead by Hiroyuki Imaishi, founder of Studio Trigger, which most recently directed Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Those finishers you guys mentioned in Triple KO don't disappoint, a punch summoning a tornado out of nowhere was spectacular. A shame the last time this series got anything was at Project X Zone, and even there Bahn was relegated to be an assist.
In retrospect, it's actually pretty sick just how much mileage devs got out of the VF2 engine. Besides VF2 and this game, there was also Sonic The Fighters, Virtua Fighter Kids, The Last Bronx, Fighters MegaMix and the very first Dead or Alive title.
Everybody will be "excited", everyone will want to sound gangsta and a retro connaisseur, and nobody will buy it. This is why Sega isn't making it. They know.
Or instead of just bringing Fighting Vipers back they did a new Fighters Megamix with all the franchises that have been introduced since then. Bring the Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers characters back, get the big Yakuza reps in there, throw in the modern Sonic characters, then something off the wall like a Jet Set Radio character or the Samba de Amigo monkey
I get the feeling some variation of this _is_ the play
Honestly, a Virtua Fighter reboot incorporating VF, Fighting Vipers, _and_ Yakuza characters is something I'd take 👍 lol
You sonofabitch I'm in.
I've been asking for this for years. Hopefully they make it happen one day
Bro, I played Fighting Vipers for the first time while playing Like a Dragon Gaiden the other week, and it's legit super fun to just pick up and play
I really liked those character arts in the credits
This is playable in Like a Dragon Gaiden
Yes and it looks great in HD resolution.
You can also play Daytona 2.
Anyone think that's a clue? 🤔
Three things to know:
1: If you remove your armor and it hits the opponent while their life is low enough to the point where doing so will KO the opponent (when they have about 5 percent or less of their health left), it will also trigger the Super KO. So you technically have _two_ chances to trigger a Super KO.
2: The game that you'll find this game in is Like a Dragon: Gaiden.
3: There's actually one more Super KO animation on BM's stage. Not sure if it can only be accessed while fighting BM in single player mode, but pulling it off there is worth it.
I know Sonic the Fighters exists but I just really want a Sonic game with KOs that are this over the top
That's where the goth kitty came from Maya? She like base of the honey character.
Honey with the classic sailor moon shot was cool
This game looks surprisingly good, can't believe I'd never heard of it until now.
The day sega re-releases these games in a stand alone compilation that’s not in some other game but utilizing the same tech…would be just… _chef’s kiss_
Bahn is just JOJO.
Raxel is the non-union Mexican equivalent of Akira Otoishi from JoJo Part 4
15:37 Sega released 2 series of ports: the Dreamcast Collection and the Model 2 Collection. The first one included Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 (with the GC enhancements as DLC), Space Channel 5 part 2 (not part 1 due to the heavy use of 3:4 videos), Crazy Taxi, Virtual On Oratorio Tangram and Jet Set Radio. The Model 2 included Virtua Fighter 2, Fighting Vipers and Sonic The Fighters. However, in Japan, they also released Virtua Striker and Virtual-On.
I mean this series lets you play as a car. That alone deserves recognition
That's Fighters Megamix for the Saturn.
Candy was the name used for the Western release of the game, Honey was for the Japanese release.
I preferred Candy.
A really good game to check out is Dino Trauma a Survival-Horror FPS with a RPG Lite Mechanic via spending points you get in levels that is basically a homage to titles like Dino Crisis and the OG Turok Trilogy, and it's actually pretty good. Though the title is in Early Access so the only Episode available is Episode 1 Dawn of the Dinosaurs with Episodes 2 and 3 coming after the game is ready for it's full release the game does support Steam Deck, Controllers, and Mouse and Keyboard.
COBRAAAA LALALALALA!!!
YOOOO JOOOEEEEEEE
I get so confused between Virtual Fighter, Last Bronx, Fighting Vipers , Dead or Alive and Burning Rangers ..and on one of those isn`t even a fighting game. 😕
BRO WAKE UP MATT MCMUSCLES PLAYED FIGHTING VIPERS 2
YES, THE DREAMCAST ONE
Jokes aside, I'm so happy people haven't forgotten this game exists. It's the most 1999 thing ever, just like the OG was the most mid-90s thing ever. I love it. 😊
A few random things!
First, the characters were designed by Sega, but specifically they were _re_ designed for the sequel by ImaiToons, a Japanese artist.
Second, the Honey-Candy name thing is reversed from what you thought; Honey's her Japanese name. She was renamed Candy for the first game's international release for some reason.
I think I played this on a demo Sega Saturn at Toys r Us back in the day. I thought it was cool a character had a skateboard.
Let the action begin
I revisited this game for my birthday back in January and it was a fucking blast.
Bahn isnt entirely a jojo reference more that his name is a play on Bancho, where school cheer and deliquents would do shit like wear their uniforms all punk like
I could be 100% wrong but I feel thats what it is
Daidouji from Senran Kagura is a perfect example of a bancho
This game is awesome. I imported it for Dreamcast when it came out. I couldn't believe that they greenlit a sequel to Fighting Vipers at the time and I was seething when Sega of America canceled the US release.
If VF6 ever gets made, Sega could add a couple of Fighting Vipers characters. Heck, even Last Bronx. Sure, that game is more Soul Calibur style, but still. I remember my favorite character being Yoko (the girl that wields tonfas).
Last Bronx was superb! The joke weapons were great - my favorite was a big fish and toy train.
@@Marzimus Another favorite character was Kurosawa. Looking back at his design, he has a bit of Kiryu Kazuma (Yakuza) vibes.
@@VBrancoPT Very close to playing Y Zero, after bits and pieces from other entries the last two decades.
Feels akin to revisiting Street Fighter X Tekken and lost liminal spaces, oddly..
I haven't played the games, yet Raxel is one of my favorite fighting game characters purely for his design and flying V guitar. So awesome! I hope these characters return in other games.
Bahn and Raxel have so much Hokuto No Ken vibes ^_^
19:00 The rare super clutch Matt
Matt’s WOW at the honey panty shot got me 😂😂😂😂
Has anyone noticed that Gamefan was the only contemporary western videogame publication that gave all the cult classic videogames the praise they deserved when they originally came out!?
Fighting VIpers really deserves more love
Dude I LOVE FV2 game its hella underrated, put some respect on my girl honey frfr
Bahn you mean JOTARO! 😂 but no this game is such a underrated gem
man the character designs are so good... like i would hope sega would give them a chance at least in the new virtua fighter in development, but seriously doubt
Bahn... That's DEFINITELY a Jo-Jo reference!
Why have we never had a Vipers vs Tekken crossover?
Glad to see ya cover this one Matt- you gotta be channel that gives a spotlight to these old SEGA gems!
Would be cool to add Fighting Viper , Last Bronx , Shenmue, Yakuza and Streets of Rage characters to the New Virtua Fighters. make it work somehow.😁
The Super KOs are so outlandishly over the top that it makes the 90s kid in me go nuts
Man, I really want to see a Sega fighting collection. Give us all the Virtua Fighters, the Fighting Vipers games, Last Bronx, Fighters Megamix, Eternal Champions. Just put it all together in a collection with online.
Hell yea! I played this with friends way back in the early 2000's with (of course) a burned copy on Dreamcast. Sucks it didn't get a USA release, just a super fun fighter.
I don't have any proof, but I'm certain they just flipped Virtua Fighter's initials and came up with Fighting Vipers. also, I played the first one in arcades and Fighters Megamix on Saturn but can't remeber if I played this one.
If there is a new Dead or Alive I want that they include Honey on it like the Virtua Fighter characters, since SEGA will still probably focus only on Sonic and more games as a service until the end of times.
Man i remember getting this game from super potato when i was in japan back in 2017. One of my favorite fighting games glad that’s yakuza gaiden have it included.
Hey Matt! I saw a video on the PSX game Aconcagua, thought you'd like to give it a shot? Even surprised you haven't made a video on it
Omfg I'm seeing new videos on Fighting Vipers 2 and Battle Fantasia in the same week!! I have no idea why fighting game video makers have honed in on my eclectic interests, but I'm loving it!!
I remember the first game sending shockwaves over every publication fighting game specialist. The walls, the armor! It was too much!
A lot of copycats appearing. I particularly remember Heaven's Gate promising walls and even a ceiling on PS1. And not delivering it.
But then nobody really bought Fighting Vipers. It was an amazing game. But a game that was ignored even for the fighting game crowd, that went for other games. Some arguably better, some definitely worst.
And then Fighting Vipers returned. On Dreamcast, no less. That it was previously on the arcades was overlooked. Who was playing on arcades? But the Surely it was on a better platform than the Saturn. The Saturn that tanked its predecessor. But when Dead of Alive 2 totally eclipsed it, it was the death of the franchise. FV could have been the best game, but it was never to be more than a niche game. Some game that the critics loved, but the common player ignored. Even the usual fighting game player.
Get that Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers out of here. Sega, give me Dark Edge 2. Not gonna lie, those cage breaks at the end of the round are great, the city exploding scene got me laughing for a while.
Raxel's hair and the fact he's carrying a Jackson Rhoads makes me think he's modeled after Randy Roads. That's gonna be my head-canon until I've found evidence proving otherwise
Never heard of this game and as someone who's a proud collector of all things underrated in gaming that's saying quite a lot.
Double checked the info on Honey/Candy and in Japan in FV1 Honey was 16 years old, considering the the style at the time they probably turned her into Candy and aged her up to 18 to avoid age issues considering how provocative some her artwork was.
If you're doing Fighting Vipers I'd love to see some Fighters Megamix. Never played it so no idea if it's any good but I thought it looked like the coolest thing as a kid.
That clutch damn
"Viper" was an old slang term from the Jazz era - it described a user of marijuana - the weed from hell!
Not sure if you did Fighters Megamix. That gets my vote.
Virtua Fighter Vs Fighting Vipers (a way to bring them back)
Bahn's alt color is just Jotaro's DIU colors, was there just a Jotaro dial that the team just kept turning until the lawyers yelled at them to stop?
Why not combign Fighting Vipers and Virtua Fighter into 1 game.
Something like...a MEGAMIX?
FIGHTING FIGHTER
1:24 Holy shit that guy is in Project X Zone 2!
Great game if you're playing against another player. King BM is still my favorite boss fighter name.
I never got to play Fighting Vipers 2. I had the first one on Sega Saturn and also Fighter's Megamix, which has all the characters from Virtua Fighter and Fighting Vipers together.
It is truly too bad that fighting games are not as popular as they used to, although maybe we are heading to a second golden age with the release of the new Tekken 8 and Street Fighter last year (fingers crossed). I would love to see so new entries to a lot of these fighting games. Imagine Bloody Roar with today's graphics and processors (my god!). It's too bad that there is also the issue that some of these franchises are tangled in a web of copyright mess.
Back when Sega experimented with different games
The first Fighting Vipers game is playable in the Like a Dragon spinoff Judgment.
I haven’t played this one before
BUT I have played the (Japanese fighting vipers)
Game the one that has pepsiman on it!
I love the sega Saturn it has SUCH a underrated lineup the arcade perfect titles HELL I even bought a arcade stick to relive my childhood of going to arcades in malls and Chuck E. Cheese’s
(Such an awesome console!)
Maaaan i miss AM2 at least the Yakuza devs are somewhat picking up the slack with VF5
The first one i played i think it was on dreamcast. love kicking people out the ring
It's a shame they never released this in the US.
They should make a new fighters megamix in the dragon engine
I played this game a lot on dreamcast. Imported a copy from the eu. Real funny of sega to keep up the trend of putting these in yakuza games so you have to buy those just to play these games. Funny thing is Del Sol is actually a guest character in this game I believe. I've seen him in another very obscure fighting game.
There were a few unlockables in this game. Really hard to get some of them.
It would be just perfect for them to make a new figthers megamix game. But I guess they rather want to throw money on some destined-to-fail mobile games.......
my god this game is AGGRESSIVELY DREAMCAST lol. This unlocked some memories, wow- thankfully I still have my dreamcast ........and a cd burner ehehehehe
I bet Last Bronx in the Dreamcast would have given Soul Caliber a good fight regarding graphics and game play. I'm still having wet dreams waiting for that 😮😅😅😅
I’m sorry I lost it at “The great BM!”
I’m like 5-6 months late but DID I SEE HONEY/CANDY DOING BAYONETTA BS DOING THE JUMP UNDER THE MOONLIGHT?!?!
weird I was just thinking about this game
09:00 Fighting Vipers, outsider art
¿Tenia 2da parte 😳😲?
I really don’t understand how people don’t talk about this game as much as the first this one is way better
Honey looks like Harley Quinn from Batman.
Aww man got to play this for the first time honey is fun to play as
This game looks like Soul Blade, Bloody Roar and Virtua Fighter all anaconda breeding balled a baby.
No dedicated dodge (especially after VF 3, Saturn FV and Fighters Megamix had one) plus an extremely content-light DC port meant that FV2 was always facing an uphill struggle, sadly.
(Also, Fighters Megamix 2 with all the Fighters, Vipers and Bronxers please Sega, you cowards!)
Forget Dramatic Finishes, fighting games need more Super KO's!!!
Mahler was golden frieza before golden frieza and Bahn is more of the bancho archetype than a JoJo reference
Feels like a Star Gladiator spin off
??????
9:06 (Goofy scream)
Ofcoarse the Glutts are the strongest part of the body!😂❤ Just ask R.Mika or Shermie why she smacks it!❤
What a insane game. I love it. I must play it now. Thanks Matt! Also stop bringing up Bloody Roar! He's DEAD! We buried him!
