    Here is my tip as an academic. Don't aim to sound smart. Just listen and observe before you speak. Often times, it pays to know when to engage in a conversation and when to take a step back. A good listener always trumps a loud mouth.

Interestingly I was dressed really well by a mens outfitter for the evening.

    I would cringe very hard if I heard an American trying to put on a ‘British accent’ (whatever that means - I’ll assume RP) in order to come across as more intelligent. It would surely be better to do as anybody should if they are trying to make a good impression. Make the effort to speak well. A well spoken ’Southern’ American accent sounds excellent to me.

    Yes, our friends over the pond are sometimes interested in our accents ( moreso in less tourist places). However, it only works if you have a BBC/ RP accent. Some are harder to understand ( the band Oasis once had subtitles on US TV!) & my family are taken for Australians in the US.
    I once had a waitress in Niagara intrigued by my accent that my Swiss friend couldn't understand why & was getting a bit envious about.

    Do NOT fake an English accent. 99.9% of people can not do it properly. This is the worst advice ever. English people will think you sound stupid. Other people will think, why is he trying to sound English all of a sudden. When Americans do an English accent, it usually sound like a bad version of Oliver Twist. Fake Accents sound fake. Simply just pronounce your words correctly. Trust me, as an English person, DON'T do it, it sounds terrible. Last point is, you could seriously offend someone.

  • @ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy
    @ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy 5 років тому

    Fake a British accent? Lucky for me, I have that accent by nature. That said, which British accent you use is what makes all the difference. There are two main types of British accent.
    1: Your native regional accent. The Great British Empire has several different accents, and which one you hear depends on where you are.
    2: Then, there is what is known as "The BBC Accent," which is what quite a lot of Brits use when speaking with non-Brits, INSTEAD of using their native regional accent.
    So, keep that in mind when you speak with a Brit. If they are using The BBC Accent, then yes, the rest of the world does consider that as more intelligent. BUT, if they use their native regional accent, that is not easily-comprehensible. This is especially true of the the Essex accent, or the Southern Welsh accent, who only end up sounding like a drunkard to non-Essex or non-Welsh.
    As for the imbibing idiot, that is all too true. Some months ago, a band wanted me to come play with them for a day. Afterward, the vocalist started asking if I had a wife and kids, and that is when I told him that I have no intentions of getting into a relationship in the first place, and fully intend to stay single my entire life. Well, he started going on and on about how asexual people are creepy, and he would take a big drink between each paragraph. Even if he did mean well, he looked like a drunkard pontificating for the sake of hearing his own voice. That said, 10 minutes after we met, I saw him open a beer bottle with his cigarette lighter. If someone knows how to do that, that should be your first red flag right there. In the end, I chose to not be friends with him, and to not join his band on a permanent basis. I simply cannot be associating with those types of people.
