  • This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the speed of sound in solids, liquids, and gases. It contains plenty of examples and practice problems. In a solid, the speed of sound depends on the density of the material and young's modulus - also known as the elastic modulus. In a liquid, the speed of sound depends on the density of the fluid and the bulk modulus. In a gas, the speed of the sound depends on gamma - the ratio of heat capacities, the temperature, and the molar mass of a gas. As the temperature increases, the speed of sound in air increases. The speed of a solid is higher than the speed of sound in a liquid which in turn is higher than the speed of sound in a gas. All of the equations and formulas that you need are provided. This video contains examples and practice problems of calculating the speed of sound in steel, the speed of sound in water, and the speed of sound in air.

    If speed of sound is constant (344m/s) then why do we calculate speed of sound for different wavelengths, with the formula ... speed of sound = frequency x wavelength. Because there are numericals given in kid's textbook to find out speed of sound with the given frequency and wavelength. Some websites on Google says speed of sound is uniform (344 m/s) and does not depend on frequency or wavelength, when the opposite is clearly given in the formula. Please explain.

    If the density of a solid is directly proportional to the speed of sound travelling through it, why is it indirectly proportional as stated in the first equation?

    • @nick.......
      @nick....... 3 роки тому

      Because it's not directly proportional. Increasing density actually decreases the speed of sound.

    why can't u use the bulk modulus when calculating the sound velocity in a solid.

    #1 explanation lol someone correct me w the units tho im not used to that but anyways:
    sqrt 200x10^9 pa / 8000 kg/m^3 = sqrt 25000000 kg/m/s^2
    - because thats like the other form of the unit pa since we have kg/m^3 so thats just for convenience
    sqrt 25000000 kg/m/s^2 = 5000 m/s
    - dont ask me about canceling units n stuff idk how it works lol but if someone wanna explain it to me do so please
