Can someone please explain to me why the A in the formula for the amount of energy passing through the eardrum is the area of the eardrum and not 4pir^2, which is distance from the speaker?
Intensity is defined by Energy per unit area per unit time. When we are talking about the intensity of sound at a distance R, we take 4πr² as area, because that is the amount of intensity present at that distance, but when it is about receiving energy as in case of eardrum, we need to consider the area of the eardrum as the intensity perceived by every body at a particular distance is not constant, but it's area dependent. Even though the source emits equal intensity, the bodies do not perceive that equally, it's their area that matters.
This example is totally unreal. No one loudspeaker could produce an acoustic power of 500 Watts at 1 meter. There is a difference between acoustic and electrical power
