  • This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into the doppler effect of moving sound waves. it explains how to solve doppler effect problems in physics. Any time the source moves toward the observer or if the observer moves toward the source, the detected frequency will increase - that is - the observed frequency will be greater than the frequency emitted by the source. The source can be an ambulance truck or a police siren. If the source moves away from the observer or if the observer moves away from the source, the detected frequency will decrease. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems of calculated the frequency detected by the observer.

Hi sir! For the last answer:
Since you are using direction doesn't the sign change.
Doesn't Fo=900(343+25)/(343-20) become Fo = 900(343+25)/(343+20) since you have to take direction into consideration or.....

I was trying to wrap around my brain on this for the past 3 hours with insignificant progression till I stumbled upon this video. The explanation is logically systemic and the examples are just perfect. That begin said, I actually clearly understood the concept of Doppler effect within 20 mins. Always a life saver JG! Thank you!

Can you consider the ambulance question but if the ambulance is parked and the observer travels toward the ambulance at the same speed, 30 m/s. Logically, I feel as though the answer should be the same, however, when worked out, the original f' is ~877Hz and in my question it is ~870Hz. Can you explain why there is a difference in observed frequency between these scenarios? Thank you.
