Well, this album (Roots) is kind of a mess in several senses. Sepultura was going through all sorts of issues, including what we could call an indentity crysis. The band spent 3 days partaking in the life of a native tribe from the central part of Brazil, called Xavante. There they recorded the ceremony featured in the track "Itsári", some elements performed by the natives in other songs and generally gathered inspiration for the album. The "traditional brazilian music" part of it, at least in this song (Ratamahatta) is a mix of some Xavante music and a new genre of brazilian music at the time called manguebeat. I would not call any of these kinds of sounds "traditional" in the sense of being a widespread part of brazilian culture, actually they are quite the contrary. Most indigenous tribes in Brazil are very secluded both geographically and culturally speaking (even a lot of their languages and dialects are not completely understood still today, and have nothing to do with portuguese), so we have a wide variety of bits and pieces of their cultures that were incorporated in our general culture throughout the years, but generally speaking our native tribes and their cultures remain enigmatic and hazy. There is not a lot to be drawn from this album in terms of brazilian culture, certainly not lyrically at least. Ratamahatta, for example, is a made up word, kind of a portmanteau of "Rats of Manhattan". Carlinhos Brown (a very famous musician and artist here in Brazil, he is the one with the clean voice you hear featured in this song), who co-composed this song together with Sepultura, allegedly saw a bunch of rats in the streets when he was visiting New York, then he came up with the title along with most of this song's lyrics, that mostly don't make sense. I totally understand the impact Roots had back in the day, and the role of spreading a bit of "deep brazilian culture" to the world, even to brazilians themselves, but generally speaking Roots is just not a very good album. I would recommend Sepultura's previous album Chaos AD a lot more than this one if you want to hear some brazilian music mixed with metal in a more cohesive way, and early Soulfy if you want to hear more of the enraged tribal stuff. Now if you want to go deeper into brazilian folk and indigenous music, there is a band called Arandu Arakuaa, their songs are entirely sang in Tupi-Guarani, the tongue of a branch of several native tribes from Brazil.
That's the song we chose to play at the end of highschool, on the talent show. I was an introverted guy and i wanna prove to anybody that i'm somebody 😅🤟

Sepultura hasn't been the same since the departure if the Cavalera brothers. From Beneath the Remains all the way through the Roots albums are timeless. Each with their own identity
There was band from Hungary called Niburta who released a record that absolutely blew my mind using a combination of cultural influences. Listen to the tracks Masala and Rege. The album is called “Scream from the East”. They kind of went into obscurity, but this was such a unique album!
The song was originally recorded in 1994 look at 2 live sessions and attitude root album was remastered in 2017 in studio four people drumming 2 guitarist doing the original vocals
So the vocalist at the time was Max Cavalera. Mr. Cavalera has 3 other bands that he is in. Cavalera Conspiracy, the supergroup killer be killed, and Soulfly.
Quite many metal bands mix their cultural music with metal, it's called Folk Metal. Folk Black metal is quite a common thing (I love it!), but also many other metal genres are used for the mix. I'd say the Sepultura album Roots is a nu-metal/folk metal mix. Here's a list of some great folk metal bands from different countries and thus different cultural elements on a varying degree. Some of these have been active for decades so some albums might have stronger folk influence than the others: Skyforger (Latvia) Eluveitie (Switzerland) Nokturnal Mortum (Ukraine) - I recommend "The Voice of Steel" album Ensiferum (Finland) Wintersun (Finland) Moonsorrow (Finland) Metsatöll (Estonia) Cemican (Mexico) Windir (Norway) Týr (Faroe Islands) Heidevolk (Netherlands) Cruachan (Ireland) Primordial (Ireland) Orphaned Land (Israel) Melechesh (Israel)
Alien Weaponry is a newer band that does music a lot like Roots but with traditional Maori music. Saw 'em open for Gojira in October and they were incredible!
România have several bands like that (mixing metal with romanian folclore): Negura Bunget (atmospheric folk/black metal), DorDeDuh (atmospheric folk/black metal), Dirty Shirt (hardcore folk metal), Sur Austru (atmospheric black metal), Bucovina (folk metal)

Hey Mark, amazing video! Here some recommendations of Brasilian bands: Band: Project46 Musics: pânico, pode pá, acorda pra vida, erro +55 Band: Krisiun Musics: "Bloodcraft", "Vicious Wrath", "H.O.G. (House of God)", "Suicidal Savagery", "United in Deception" Another band from Max Cavalera: Soufly musics: bleed, back to the primitive, rise of the fallen, prophecy Musics from Sepultura: Attitude, chaos Ad, Territory, Orgasmatron, refuse/resist, roots bloody roots ( on this they make a feat with a regional samba percursion band ), arise, convicted in life (new formation of the band) New band with Igor and Max Cavalera: Cavalera Conspiracy music: Sanctuary, spectral war, inflikted, insane

Max cavalera Sepultura was a crazy time of innovation and unique creativity. You will love it trust me...🏴🇬🇧🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Rotting Christ often mix traditional and even ancient Greek elements in their music, but mostly in the instruments and the timings etc. I think they'd be right up your alley though. ROTTING CHRIST - (Kata Ton Daimona Eaytoy) (just search for it on youtube like that) is one good example, mixing Greek and English lyrics too.
Hey Alex! Would you be willing to do a video on vocals that sound amazing, but that have been proven to not be safe and admitted by vocalist to have damaged their voice? Such as Corey Taylor's vocals on the album Iowa, since many people tend to listen to that and want to mimick it without knowing the dangers of it. A good example song to dig in to would be Metabolic.
They put an EP I think right before this called Blood-Rooted, and it has Mike Patton on a song called "Mine" and "lookaway" on roots album, and if you are familiar with Patton great songs with noises, maybe you can pick up whats going on in the background. Just a suggestion. Cool man. And a Brazilian band to check out is Tortured Squad.

if you want more portuguese metal songs, we have project 46, my favorite song is "panico" from their last album. Pray for mercy is another awesome deathcore band that we have, check threir song "anexo III: invocação" if you want to.
"Project MishraM - Kanakana ft. Kmac2021" an indian influenced metal song with all that microtonal vocal stuff, i think you will like a lot
This was so good!
Possibly my favourite Sepultura song. The percussion is so awesome. After checking out Roots, check out the album Schizophrenia!
So cool. Brings back so many memories, when I was a kid I always adored the song, but couldn't watch the clip. It was to scary :)))
Bloddywood from India has recently released a new song which reminded me of this classic song from Sepultura.
Some of these have been active for decades so some albums might have stronger folk influence than the others:
Skyforger (Latvia)
Eluveitie (Switzerland)
Nokturnal Mortum (Ukraine) - I recommend "The Voice of Steel" album
Ensiferum (Finland)
Wintersun (Finland)
Moonsorrow (Finland)
Metsatöll (Estonia)
Cemican (Mexico)
Windir (Norway)
Týr (Faroe Islands)
Heidevolk (Netherlands)
Cruachan (Ireland)
Primordial (Ireland)
Orphaned Land (Israel)
Melechesh (Israel)
you have to check out the live recording on Dutch music show "2 Meter Sessions". Filmed in 1996. This song, roots and attitude.
You definitely need to listen to the Roots album start to finish. It's a classic for sure.
Overdose uses the tribal instruments as well . They are also from Brazil
i think some backing vocals along with some drumming (namely the intro) were provided by some xavante guys
this is a funny song and back in 96 i was 20 when i bought this roots album double cd. And 97 i bought the album blood rooted which was sepultura covering other bands good stuff. Hello from FInland.
When I heard this for the first time I thought that they sounded an awful lot like ill ninõ and realized that ill ninõ took influence from sepultura. Btw anyone remember them? They were sick.
Angra also mixes their Brazilian (I think?) roots into their music. They're a power metal band, really good
I'll check them out!
My first encounter with sepultura was as a teenager. "Roots, bloody roots"!!! Sometimes later I discovered Soulfly. "Blood, Fire, War, Hate" would be my recommendation.
Oh shit, Mark is a Shpongle fan! Color me pleasantly surprised.
I feel at home with this reaction! Brazil representation!!!
Bloodywood is a newer band theyve been playing on liquid metal, out of India. Lots of sounds of the culture in their music. Cool band.
Yo, y'all need to do an anatomy lesson video with animations showing internals and such
Hey Mark, amazing video!
Here some recommendations of Brasilian bands:
Band: Project46
Musics: pânico, pode pá, acorda pra vida, erro +55
Band: Krisiun
Musics:
"Bloodcraft", "Vicious Wrath", "H.O.G. (House of God)", "Suicidal Savagery", "United in Deception"
Another band from Max Cavalera:
Soufly
musics: bleed, back to the primitive, rise of the fallen, prophecy
Musics from Sepultura:

Tortured Squad is my favorite at the moment.
@@morganhayes1589 the vocalist, may undead, is fucking amazing. have you ever heard "Nervosa"?
@@uglymanrsg yes sir I have. Crypta I believe is new to me but brazilian metal has some great bands that no-one hasnt heard yet. May Undead is a freaking a beast and she pretty.
The documentary Global Metal showcases a lot of bands from outside of North America/Europe.
Listen to the album version of this song. It's a bit longer and there's an almost throat singing part there that didn't make the cut... wonder why...
this music was be created feat musicist and percusionist CARLINHOS BROWN. percusionist from the salvador city in brazil
a bop that the algorithm should listen to
There is also a live performance with Carlinhos Brown at the NPA UA-cam chanel
As your suggestion and not listened to a lot of them
Would Cruachan or Primordial fit that description?
Ektomorf used some traditional hungarian music in their intros and older stuff (Instinct and Outcast era)
if you enjoyed this you should check also live versions: Sepultura Live Pinkpop 1996 Ratamahatta/Kaiowas or Sepultura - Ratamahatta (Live on 2 Meter Sessions)
Must have to check out live version of this (+attitude)
On live session, easy to find
you will not be disappointed
I always found when listening to sepultura is to listen to the whole album
theres two singers, the actual singer of the band and the drummer of another band. i think the ladder does the more "straining" scream
That Im pretty sure isn't the full track of the album. Not for a reaction but please listen to the whole album it's incredible. Death and thrash mixed with tribal music there's nothing like it in metal it's astounding. My twenty years old brain was blown away. Max cavalera Sepultura was a crazy time of innovation and unique creativity. You will love it trust me...🏴🇬🇧🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I’d love to see a reaction to some of their modern stuff with Derrick Green as the vocalist. “Isolation” is awesome.
Imagine Sepultura playing this at Woodstock 99. That'd have been fire!
Cool man.
And a Brazilian band to check out is Tortured Squad.
well the new knocked loose EP has a complete stop-motion video which is really well done
It doesn't get more Brazilian AND metal than this song
