My husband's favorite soup on the planet...this is what he looks forward to on holidays because there's left over ham and a bone to toss in the pot.

Split Peas Soup is one of our staples; I never have leass than 6 quarts in the pantry. I use ham bones (left from the Easter and Christmas hams) to make ham broth just for use in canning Split Pea Soup. I also add a small bay leaf to each quart before canning. Nothing like a big bowl of Split Pea Soup topped with homemade garlic croutons with a generous sprinkle of Pecorino Romano over the top to warm cold bones in the winter!

Lol, I'm one of the crazy ones that loves split pea soup. Yesterday, we spent at our amish friends' house canning beef bone broth for my first time. We're finishing it off today. I'm so excited!!! All together, we got like 15lb of beef to can off the bones, too.

Habitant Soup is the Quebec-Canadian name of the soup. The recipe comes from Bernardin, which is the Canada’s branch of Jarden who owns both Bernardin and Ball (sister companies). We usually make it with yellow split peas who hold their shape a bit better. Glad you used broth. We usually use ham stock made from our easter or xmas ham bones. That recipe is hands down the best I’ve ever made. 🇨🇦🫙

yellow ones are good too loved Canada still wanted to see Quebec side. Big big country. I've seen about half at 52. Don't like outsiders much then. Yeah, us we got seats next to the kitchen doors. Always😅but I didn't care. It was beautiful there. I'll adapt or deal or walk away.

Thank you for this video! I refused to eat spit pea soup because I do not like green peas. Then, a cup of it came along with a restaurant meal and I tried it. OMG! I had NO idea what I had been missing. Absolutely delicious! It has been a staple of my soup making ever since. During lockdown I learned how to pressure can and make sure to keep a supply of this on my shelves. If you work outside the home, this is an ideal item to take to work for lunch. It is also a great gift to share. Hubby's expression when tasting it was priceless!

Habitants is a nod to the Quebecers of the past who ate this soup a lot. In Canada we also have a store bought brand called Habitants that carry split pea soup. If you’re a hockey fan the Montreal Canadiens nickname is Les Habitants or the Habs.

I never liked split pea soup until my grandmother made it with a broth from boiling the roasted ham bone and leftover ham bits. I like beef broth too. That said, if you don't have broth, or even ham, you can add liquid smoke and sesame oil, and/or caramelize onions. If you cook pea soup a long time and it's usually too thin, add rice at the beginning. It'll cook away to nothing and thicken it up nicely. To make the instant variety just knock the pot over and you have instant spilt pea.

I need to try this because this is my least favorite thing but willing to try your recipe. However we don’t eat pork but found smoked turkey tails taste the same really! A friend brought me potato soup and after the first taste I couldn’t believe it told my husband she used ham. Ask her and she told me it was turkey tails! Never would have guessed it.

I have always used chicken stock to make split pea soup. I like it "pureed" and not chuncky, so I dont usually put anything that makes it look "unappetizing" into the jars as it can always be added to the stock when you heat it up for consumption. When it goes into the jars it is a "thin" texture, but when the jars cool is becomes a layer of thick peas at the bottom and a layer of broth on the top. However, when you warm it up it all becomes a nice smooth and "silky" soup.

3 things about this video I LOVE. Split Pea soup! The Ball canning book is my go-to source, I will make this recipe. And meeting your husband. That sort of response and silly expressiveness is very much like my hubby on my videos. I Love it. Being able to laugh together is the BEST!!! Although I can't do many fermented foods because of a histamine reaction that causes me asthma symptoms, I do like your intelligent approach. It is obvious that you do your research. Thank you! Now to make this soup and use your method for canning beans without the farts.

I absolutely love split pea soup, or as my daughter called it, Spit pea Stoup. It' being winter we eat lots of soups and stews. Great way to warm up. And my cranberry wine is almost ready too. Another month till the apple carrot wine is ready. A warm glass of that before bed helps get rid of all the aches and pains that come with cold and old age lol. Terrific video and nice to meet the hubby.

I have memories of my 3 or 4 years old self dumping my bowl of split pea soup in the sink (the sink was green so in my little mind, my mom would never notice it). Umm, she did. I got in trouble and got to go to bed hungry. Yep that green kitchen sink was back in the 1960s. I am actually tempted to try this recipe to see if my adult taste buds can handle it. I am making beef bone broth this weekend. Your enthusiasm and recommendation are very tempting! 😍

I love that recipe and have made it many times. I always triple it and I can it in quart jars. It is so delicious!

Split pea soup is a favorite. Thank you for reminding me it in the ball book. Also the trick about the rim issue is a great reminder to be extra careful with cleaning. Your hubby is adorable with his review 😊

And here I was wondering if pea soup would be too thick to can safely. I am thrilled it can be! I have a ham, and some ham base powdered bouillon. Guess what I’m doing this weekend?😊

Habitat pea soup was one of my fathers favorite. You could buy it in a can. My parents didn't can.
