How this guy doesn’t have a million plus subscribers is beyond me. I’ve never made a recipe from him that I didn’t like. Such a personable guy and the editing is on point. You can tell that he truly loves doing this!
100% agree. This guy is my go to when I feel like busting out the instant pot, and this recipe in particular is a staple in my house. With a slice of toasted sourdough bread it's magnificent!
It's probably due to little details like cook the bacon first and then cook the veg in the bacon fat to build flavor, I know he says he doesn't want to overcook the bacon but that's easy to avoid.
Ditto. I had a very limited pressure cooker list of recipes. Until him. I legit made three of his recipes back to back. And they all came out sooooo goooood. My boyfriend calls me a food critic because I always have a lot to say about what I’m eating and I refuse to eat anything I cook that I don’t like. And it used to be frustrating trying new recipes until this guy.
This looks so good! I love split pea soup! Reminds me of my sweet Grandmother, she used to sometimes make this soup with some cajun andouille sausage (we’re from Louisiana). Can’t wait to try and thank you for sharing!
I was a fully grown adult before I gave this soup a try. I absolutely love it and so do the kids! After growing a liking for it, I tried it in several restaurants and it was just as you described - runny flavorless soup with split peas floating around that were not tender or tasty at all. Get yourself a ham shank for a nice ham dinner sometime. Slow-cook the shank for 24 hours and pour through a colander to collect the stock. Get some ham or bacon and chop it up and follow this recipe. You will not regret it.
My mum used to make this for me throughout my entire life, especially in the winter. She passed away a couple of years ago now, and her cooking is one of the biggest things I miss about her. But pea soup, it was just special. She made it with yellow split peas though, and because I don't eat ham(I just don't like it for some reason), she substituted it with lamb. I'm going to have to give this recipe a try and see how it compares to hers. I never got her recipe from her though, although I may be able to get a copy of it. It's cooling down quite a bit here in Melbourne now, so in the next couple of weeks, I think I'll give it a go! This, and a braised steak and onion. Nom!
I love split pea soup! I don’t make it very often because of the time it takes to make it. And no one seams to appreciate it! So I tried your recipe!!!! Wow! I loved it! My husband who hates split pea soup is now begging me to make it again! Thank you so much for an awesome recipe. I used cream cheese and herbed butter at the end.
Just made this recipe.....Amazing!!!!! I left out the Sherry wine and the cream at the end of the video and it still was to die for. Lots of flavor and delicious! I've made lots of split pea recipes over the years and this is by far the best and easiest so far.
I made this tonight. Didn't have worch so I subbed a tblsp bourbon. Chunked & skinned a couple left over baked potatoes. Used 1/4 cup dry Sherry, 1/4 cup Madeira. Thick cut hickory bacon. Was fantastic! Thanks Jeff!
My mother used to make split pea after every bone-in ham meal and when I searched for this recipe I went to your channel 1st and stopped. No need to search elsewhere! You have not let me down yet!!!!! Thank you heading out to the supermarket to get some split pea
This soup was delicious! Due to what was what I had on hand: I didn’t use sherry I also used better than bouillon ham broth plus a half cup extra to replace the sherry. Instead of the raw bacon , I used two huge handfuls of already cooked Bacon crumbled and cooked it for about five minutes instead of ten. This recipe is a keeper! My husband even wants the leftovers for breakfast, so do I!!! Yay! Thanks for going out of your way and doing these recipes!😃
I just made it tonight with my Christmas left over ham and just used Better than Boullion Roasted Chicken and cream cheese instead of Boursin. It turned out fabulous! Keep them coming!
My mother has made split pea soup that everyone raves about for years. She uses a ham bone and takes it out to cut off the meat. She then adds a cup of fresh peas and 10 oz of spinach for a few minutes before blending it with the immersion blender. It also uses cream instead of Boursin. You've given me ideas on how to adapt this wonderful recipe to use in the pressure cooker. Thank you!
This is the look and consistency I expect to see in a good split pea soup. I will have to give this recipe a try but, I'll use diced ham instead of the bacon. Also, I like to spread the dry peas on a sheet pan prior to adding them to the pot. and check for any "clinkers" (small pebbles, odd colored peas, and/or twigs) that may have found their way into the peas. Then, I give the peas a quick rinse in tap water. Thanks very much for your fine presentation.
Made this yesterday. Turned out nice. I didn’t use bacon rather country ham slices with bone. When making this again I’d use more carrots, I like seeing the orange within the green. Also loose the herbs. The beauty of split beans are their general sweetness. Adding the herbs makes the soup aromatic and looses the gentle sweet flavor of the peas. Sometimes less is more. Love his channel... my go to for recipes. ❤️
WHOA!!! now that is split pea soup. I am making it today and was looking for Instant Pot recipes and came across yours. I stopped in my tracks and decided this was the recipe. I am however a bit nervous about the sherry wine but I am an adventurous person and will give it a go. Thanks loads and now you have a new subscriber :-)
Thank you for this recipe I have made your roast and it was the best o have ever had in my 78 years. So I am looking forward to this recipe Keep up the good work.
I'm not sure what sort of split pea soup Jeff has been eating but my grandma's was so amazing that this has remained my favourite soup all my life. I'm making this recipe today and I'm so excited!
Just found this yesterday and decided to try it. I have been a split pea soup fan all my life and have tried it where ever it was sold, to include famous pea soup establishments such as Andersons Split Pea Soup in California. I have to say this is by far the best split pea soup I have ever tasted. Seems like a very simple recipe and it is but thats all you need.
Jeff, I am a removed Long Islander and listening to you talk takes me back. Glad to hear yet another LI ander besides Billy Joel showing the talent from LI
Thank you for this recipe! I used a ham steak from the freezer and onion "better yhan boullion", no sherry and the soup came out wonderful. We did not even add the cheese it was so good with fresh baked bread. Looking forward to buying your cook book. Once again, thank you!
Honestly, the BEST split pea soup I’ve ever had, and I’ve been a fan of this soup for a long time. But, what seals the deal, my mom said it was the best SHE has ever had, and she used to make it professionally! Thank You!!
Jeffrey... That looks almost exactly how my mother used to make it. She is no longer with us, bless her heart. The only other thing she did different, was make homemade dumpling noodles to add to the soup.. Very hearty for the winter months. Keep up the great work on these videos and have a wonderful new year!!
Jeff, I followed your recipe almost to the letter. I made it for a friend who had been asking for split pea soup. It turned out perfectly. That will be my go to for split pea soup. Thanks!
Made this for dinner tonight and it was delicious!! Couldn’t find the Better than Bouillon anywhere so just used chicken broth and cream cheese instead of the Boursin, which I also couldn’t find here, and everyone loved it. So glad I found this channel!
I just made this today 11/15/20. I followed the directions exactly and it was great! I tasted it before adding the boursin, and after. Before, it definitely has the traditional split pea soup taste. After adding it, it mellows out the pea taste and adds a creamy texture and garlic flavor. The choice is yours, but either way is excellent. Perfect for football Sunday! Thank you!
I made this last night. It was the best I've ever made, and I like to make pea soup. I served it to my wife (of 40 years) with Instant Pot corn bread bites. We have enough for two more dinners and we will happily eat THOSE leftovers. Thanks for the video and recipe.
I think I'm making this tomorrow. I use the baby carrots and to thicken it I cook one decent sized potato, I pull it out after an hour and diced it like an onion and return it to the pot, the potato pretty much dissolves but now your soup is thicker. I usually simmer mine for hours. I'm excited to try it in the Instant Pot. I'm going to use the vegetable BTB tomorrow because that's what I have on hand besides beef and lobster. I'm hungry now!
I just made this I did not use sherry also use ham steak and cream cheese this is one of the best split pea soup I have ever had. split pea is also my favorite soup. Thank you so much for making this
I got an instantpot for Christmas bc I told my mom I love your videos! I cant wait to start using it and following your recipes- keep up the great work!!
I made pea soup for the first time in the Instant Pot using your recipe as inspiration. I was shocked!! Pea soup usually took me all day....never again. I'll always use my Instant Pot from now on.
I made this tonight. OMG was it amazing. I will never go back to canned or other store split pea soups. My partner, who doesn't like split pea soup, said it was delicious and very tasty.
OMG! Jeff, this recipe is sooo mmmmmmm good. It came out so damn good. Amazing flavor. Rich, and thick and creamy. It's spot on fantastic. Thank you for being so awesome. Excellent recipe Jeff.
The best split pea soup we ever had! My husband was surprised that he didn’t need any hot sauce in it. He can’t believe beans can be done in the instant pot either.
I used your recipe and made it vegan-ish. I took a vegan ham (we don't eat meat) and cut it up into small chunks which I marinated in a heavy Veggie Ham broth (Orrington Farms- 2tsp per 1 cup Veggie broth) for 24 hours, in the fridge. Also, I did not use Worcestershire (I was out of it) also substituted the Sherry for Tequila (it's what I had). It turned out so yummy!!!! Everyone loved it!
I made this recipe and it was GREAT! I didn't have ham stock so I used chicken and roasted veggie broth. Also didn't have thyme in the pantry but it still tasted amazing. Used Greek yogurt instead of cheese and cut out the wine. So good. Husband didn't like the appearance but loved the flavor. I'm making this again. Tfs!
My granddaughter LOVES peas. She’s 7 now and still eats baby food peas. She recently tried split pea soup (not as hearty as this soup), but she absolutely loved it! Thank you for the tips! My little Boo Bear will love me for making this! ❤️
Just had a bowl of this. It was so so good!! Great flavor, it was a tad thick but was easy remedied with a little more broth. This is for sure a keeper!!👍
The thing I like about your videos is that you get to the point. Laura Vitale is the same way. I’m surprised you don’t have million followers. Push it, next time you’re on Rachel Rays show.
This looks soooooo good! Spot on! I will be making this tomorrow, need to get some split peas! Thank you for this recipe and all the best in 2019. Love you and your videos
A story - I was an undergrad in Europe, down to my last 'dime' in Amsterdam and on my way back to London to go home. I'm starving in the railway station but only have money for the split pea soup, which I didn't like, but what was I gonna do? Well, I got this big bowl of soup with veg, potatoes, probably some meat, and a roll. I was in heaven! I was stuffed! Since that time I've loved split pea soup, but it has to be made the right way, like a meal in a bowl. No bacon, tho. : )
That is an awesome story calendarpage. Isn't it interesting how something we think we don't like becomes a tasty joy for us once we give it a try (or a few tries).
I make almost the identical in my Instant Pot, but with two different variations. I buy packaged ham cut into about 3/4 inch cubes, and, I peel and dice about six small potatoes. It everything else about the same, and it's FANTASTIC!!! Really chunky and hearty! Nothing like an Instant Pot for soup-making!!! Happy Holidays, Jeffery!!
My grandma always had small diced potatoes in addition to carrot and celery and onions.. That's the way I make it too. Can't wait to try it in my Instant Pot. Love pea soup!
How this guy doesn’t have a million plus subscribers is beyond me. I’ve never made a recipe from him that I didn’t like. Such a personable guy and the editing is on point. You can tell that he truly loves doing this!

Sadly, too many homophobes just hate him. Keep going PYL, we love you just the way you are...
I've tried this recipe without butter, bacon, and Boursin and it is STILL great! My favorite split pea soup recipe. The sherry nails it.
I’m going to make this right now!
I was a fully grown adult before I gave this soup a try. I absolutely love it and so do the kids! After growing a liking for it, I tried it in several restaurants and it was just as you described - runny flavorless soup with split peas floating around that were not tender or tasty at all. Right on...I do something very similar...flavor bombs away!!!

Lamb pea soup, interesting.

This is such a good soup and easily adapted to a no-oil vegan recipe, which I do now and again.
Wow! Thank you- you are awesome to show us how to make this. I’m new to instant pot!
I made this tonight. OMG was it amazing. I will never go back to canned or other store split pea soups. My partner, who doesn't like split pea soup, said it was delicious and very tasty.
If you want a more mild flavor if you don't like green peas, use yellow split peas. French Canadian style.
Best split pea I’ve made yet and so easy! This recipe is right on. Give it a try. !
Followed recipe as prescribed…Excellent results! Yum
Wow! Wow! Wow! Best ever. Thank you for another awesome recipe.

I tried this recipe tonight, and it was delicious. Thank you!
Made this yesterday. So good. Best I ever made. Thank you.
Tfs!
I love you for this one, Jeffrey ... well, I love you for all your recipes, but this is one of the "special" ones! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The thing I like about your videos is that you get to the point. Laura Vitale is the same way. I’m surprised you don’t have million followers. Push it, next time you’re on Rachel Rays show.

the Dutch split pea soup is not like this at all, your spoon should stand up straight in your boll when you eat it. But Jeff made a nice soup though.
It's been many years, but I bet my spoon stood up in that soup I got in the train station. Lord have mercy, that was some good food!
Way diffrent as the Dutch split pea soup, but i might try this one day. Thank you Jeff, for all the great recipes you make, and give to the world.
