I'm one of those dinosaurs who saw this in the theater in 1979, a few days after it came out. It blew my mind and has been my all-time favorite movie ever since. Thank you guys for reacting to it!
This was my dad's first big film in his sfx career, more that 45 years in the business and he's retired this year, what an awesome job he had :D great vid as per the usual guys!
Dinosaur here. I saw this in 1979 in a vintage, single-screen theater that was full to rafters, including the balcony, and the queue at the box office stretched down the street and around the corner. The film's escalating atmosphere of dread and doom kept the audience on edge and frequently breathless. (At the time, Alien was scary like no other film before it, with the exception of The Exorcist, which had come out earlier in the '70s, and which I had seen new in the theaters, too.) Do watch Aliens next, which in my opinion ties with Godfather Part 2 as the greatest movie sequel of all time. As for the rest of the series, if I had to pick just one to watch, I'd go with the oft-badmouthed Prometheus. It's imperfect and maybe not even as good as some of the others, but as a prequel it provides pre-Alien backstory, great visuals, and an awesome finale. Oh, and 2001 Space Odyssey is a must!
52:18 she tries to stop it, because the alien was standing right in front of the door. Had she used the flamethrower, he would go into the shuttle. She decided to stop the countdown to have more time.
@@GG-kn2se It has no gender as it procreates asexually (unlike what Aliens later does). It's purpose is to capture crew members and immobilize them to turn them slowly into new eggs, but the scenes showing this are cut from the theatrical version for pacing.
Comments like that are why I have a love hate relationship with Aliens. James Cameron took this weird Giger created 'alien' and turned them into nothing more than giant bugs. It's a good action movie, but a horrible follow up to this film. I haven't seen Alien: Romulus yet, but as far as I'm concerned the only real sequel to this film is Alien: Isolation.
@@Byrvurra It's true. Each iteration has slowly dumbed it down to basic cannon fodder bug monster, completely missing the point. Romulus did this as well and brought nothing new to the table imho (though the characters were awesome and the setting at the beginning was interesting).
I’ve seen SOO many reactors not realize why she did it, & I didn’t realize on the first watch either. They should have done something more obvious to show she was blocking the path. Idk
The Nostromo is basically just a tow truck carrying a mining rig. These are, for the most part, blue-collar working stiffs. Smoking, pets etc. I kinda love that.
Every Alien reaction video, has that commentary (so I'm gonna be the one) where someone informs you that the scene where the alien first burst out of kane's chest, the movie crew didn't say what would happen in the scene to the actors, so their reaction are entirely true and raw... even that "oh my god" is crazy, she sounds super scared
Every Alien reaction video someone repeats this urban legend. Are you under the impression the chest burster scene was all done in one take...? The only surprise was due to the spurting blood hitting Veronica Cartwright in the face. *Of course* the actors knew what would happen... since they'd read the script and there were multiple takes and set-ups, including special effects and puppetry.
One of the best things about Alien is that, as a film made almost fifty years ago, it has aged incredibly. The special effects, creature design, and body horror are some of the best in the genre. Alien is a timeless mood. I'm busy typing this while listening to Dan admit that he thought this was part of the Star Wars franchise and I am actually horrified. Dan! Sir!

I saw this with my friends, when it was out in cinemas, for my 12th birthday party. Yes, I am a fossil! I am currently Facebook Friends with several of the now-57-year-old "kids" who saw it with me. Anyway, yah, it was insanely cool to see in the cinema, when it was all new to everyone. ***Coming back to add a little detail here: something that fixes this memory in time and space for me, is that my friends thought the actor Yaphet Kotto (he played Parker) looked like a player at that time on our local baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, whose name was George Scott. His nickname was Boomer. If I close my eyes, I can still drift back in time and hear my buddies yelling at the movie screen "What are you gonna do now, Boomah?!?" with their little Boston accents, at moments when Parker was in great peril. Had to share.
Remember, "In space, no one can hear you scream" is the iconic tagline from the ads for this movie. I was 26 years old when I saw this movie in 1979 at the theater. Yes, I am a dinosaur and a fossil. Happy to see you lads enjoying this film. And yes, never trust the lone Brit on a crew full of Americans, unless there is also a lone Canadian included with the crew. Ha-ha, just kidding, my Canadian cousins. 😜🤪

10:17 so funny Dan mentioned Bilbo Baggins cause the man who says he read the contract is in fact Ian Holm, Bilbo Baggins from the Lord of the Rings trilogy
I was (still am) obsessed with this movie when it came out (I was 8). I saw the toy Alien at the video store, and I was fascinated by its hands, which had thumbs on both sides (one by the index finger, and a second one by the little finger). I begged my dad to let me watch it when it was on pay TV. He told me to cover my eyes during the chestburster scene, but didn't think to tell me cover my eyes during the Ash scene, which was more shocking! To 8 year old me, it looked like a man getting his head ripped off.
Parker didn't use the flamethrower because the Alien was between him and Lambert. He would have deep fried her too. In hindsight of course he should of just done that instead of trying to melee a 7 foot tall alien superpredator.
She had to try and stop the self-destruct sequence because the alien was between her and the shuttle. She was afraid she wouldn't be able to get into the shuttle and away before the ship blew.
One of the best films of all time in my humble opinion. Alien: Space Truckers who have been sent to get an alien, unbeknownst to them due to corporate greed, then one by one they all die except for the brave Cat-Lady who everyone should have listened to from the Beginning!😂😂
Perfect synopsis, though I might have described Ripley as “brave cat-lady with panties that don’t fit”, or possibly “brave cat-lady with exposed butt crack”.

Now you need to watch Aliens. Because of James Camerons mastery of 3D storytelling, he makes everything in this franchise greater and more timeless than it has a right to be
I very much enjoy that when a jumpscare occurs, the boys go from 'leaning towards screen intently' to 'oh shit I'm on a rollercoaster and it's diving'. A+ no notes.

49:35 - if you go back and listen to what they were yelling when the alien showed up, he couldn't use the flamethrower without killing HER as well. He kept telling her to move and get out of the way, but she was frozen in terror. So rather than risk her life, he decided to try and tackle it instead. Dumb, but it came from a desire to not harm his friend.
I love how you gave such a great “be mindful of the times” disclaimer for a movie that actually is timeless (thus far) in story and practical effects, lol. That tickled me. Keep em coming!
Aliens is my fave movie of all time, hopefully you react to that next. The new Romulus takes place between Alien and Aliens but I would watch in release order.
Two videos in one week. We are being spoilt. Please please please react to Aliens. Its one of the best Sci fi movies of all time and its directed by James Csmeron.
Yes, I was so happy when I saw the video earlier this week. But then today I was missing a new one. So glad there's 2 the same week! Keep them coming, guys!
Us Fossils knew that in those Jurassic days, the notable H.R. Giger's paintings were a major influence for the alien and the set designs. They were often in Sci-Fi Art books & on album covers. He was a major Consultant on the film.
Great reaction! I was 17 when I saw this at the cinema in 1979. The tension and suspense the filmmakers built was almost unbearable. I’ll never forget being riveted to my seat and almost unable to breath. An important factor in that was killing off the captain, the character one thought was going to be the hero of the film. By doing that one didn’t know what would happen next. Horror, adventure, suspense, sci-fi , every genre has its tropes that fulfill filmgoers expectations. So much so they become cliches. One of those was the hero is inevitably the male lead and leader. Sexism is still rampant today, but in the 70’s the audience wouldn’t even conceive of the possibility that Ripley would be the hero. Subverting the cliche expectations of the audience is one factor that elevates Alien to a genuine classic.
it’s a birthday month miracle, my favorite boys reacting to my favorite sci-fi horror franchise! ♥️ please, please watch all of them 🙏🏽 promise you’ll both enjoy the ride!
3:02 Was there anything before this?! 😮 Scifi have been a thing since they started making movies, from the very beginning. Georges Méliès anyone? 12:59 Or more likely protection against other humans.
He didn't use "the weapon", because he would hit Lambert, who was paralyzed with fear and couldn't move out of the way. Which was rather clearly communicated to the audience by the usage of phrases like: "Get out of the way." "I can't get out of the way!" "Get out of the way, Lambert! It's gonna kill us!" "I can't!" "Lambert, for Christ's sake, get out of the way!" "Get out of the way, Lambert!"
Loved your 1st time watching video. Dinosaur here. I went to see 'Alien' on opening day at the Odeon, Leicester Square in Sep, 1979. I was 18 years old. Queues around the block. The cinema was packed. Shown on a massive 70mm screen, and with fabulous Dolby stereo sound. You could feel the tension among the 1,500 audience members. Definitely a film to experience in a big movie theatre. I felt quite numb, and exhilarated at the same time when the film was over.
22:39 "This is the rapiest alien I ever seen" ACTUALLY!!! The creator of the Alien creature (HR Giger, designed the creature around the fear of rape, and phallic imagery! :D
49:28 Exactly where you think. Btw, Parker didn't use the flamethrower because he's just a working class guy, and didn't want to burn his co-worker alive.
I feel bad for enjoying your jumps you guys make, but it is funny. 😂 Love the reaction. The Alien movies are pretty good. The second is the definition of sequel. You’re gonna have fun with it!
Back in the late 1900s, I saw this movie when it came to HBO in the summer of 1980. My father was watching it and didn't realize I could see and hear the TV. I was 9. I saw the burster scene. I was terrified for the next 27 years. ;)
Yes, the alien was blocking the hallway to the escape pod so she goes back to try to stop the explosion , but is unable, and goes back to escape pod and alien is gone so she gets on board.
He couldn't use the flame thrower because she was in the way. Ripley tried to stop the destruction because she had to go back for the cat. Oh, watch Prometheus before Romulus.
my mum saw this in the cinema (She's 65). She said it was great because they completely kept the chest bursting scene out of the advertising. I already knew going in because of pop culture but it must have been awesome seeing something like that with no warning in 1979
Haha Fossil here I did watch this in the cinema when it came out - though it was a drive-in lol less age restriction monitoring in the Jurassic days 😅 Still one of my favourite franchises. Enjoying your reactions!
I am a dinosaur that saw this in the theater at the tender age of 14. The trailer gave nothing away and there had never been anything like this before. Nowadays the trailer gives everything away.
Dino Fossil here 😂 I watched Alien in the cinema when it was released. Before ALIEN a "Robot" was a tin man on wheels... the idea a Robot could be indistinguishable from a human was mind blowing! Also seeing space travellers who looked like they might work on an oil rig, no shiny white surfaces or laser weapons made everything feel completely real. Even having the actors "get things wrong" and not all be ultra smart made them very relatable.
Dinosaur here 😂 😂I was very young - but I saw Star Wars and then Alien at a movie theatre. These movies were monumental achievements at the time. Remember these were made with all practical effects - puppeteers, small scale models and such. Before CGI. It was an amazing experience to see something that was so believable. I really enjoy your videos - you both make me laugh! I hope you’ll consider Dark City starring Rufus Sewell. Looking forward to your next video! Cheers from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦! 😊😊😊😊😊
As soon as you said nothing better happen to Jones, I hit the subscribe button. I usually subscribe to reaction channels based on this. Great reaction.
Two youngsters are boarding the "Nostromo." What will these Hipsters make of this "old, long, slow-moving, character-centered, no-DFX" movie? Back then, TV and print ads said only: "In space, no one can hear you scream." So we went in with no idea what kind of a movie to expect. "Alien" was unlike movies of the time, and set a benchmark for "SF/Horror" movies to come. 5:11 Roll film, at last. 9:35 The Company is sending the equivalent of a freighter crew to "do science" on an unexplored planet! 14:05 You want to stroke Jones the cat? Who are you, "Mabel Pines"?;) 16:00 The Space Jockey, a mystery for years. 18:02 Second Officer Kane = Zapp Brannigan. 19:28 The first jump scare. 20:05 This conversation has become iconic due to recent events. 21:09 The Face Hugger, grossing out audiences for years. 22:45 Acid Blood! 26:38 A props Dept. work of ART, made of sea animals. 29:00 Kane's last meal. 30:07 The Xenomorph, scaring audiences for over 40 years. 31:00 Burial at sea, an old maritime custom that spares next-of-kin the grisly details. 33:30 Along came Jones. 35:24 Say hello to Bolaji Badejo. 27:27 How's that for a "syntax error"? 39:24 You're in command, Ripley. 42:50 In 1979, this was my "WTF? Ash ISN'T Human!?" moment. 44:36 Most didn't see this coming. 47:50 Some reviewers thought that Jones was the Alien! 48:14 I've read that Lambert was standing in for us, the audience. 49:28 That's a Stinger. 51:32 Escape route cut off, stop Destruct to gain time for Plan B. 57:48 Tonight's entree on the shuttle "Narcissus" is Steamed Xenomorph in Shell. 58:56 Correction, Char-Broiled Xenomorph. This and the next movie made newcomer Sigourney Weaver a major movie star. On to "Aliens" (1986)!
Dinosaur jr here. I was dragged into a dollar theater by my father when i was six and spent the entirety of the movie cowering behind the seat by him while eating milk duds and eating buttery popcorn. Traumatized me so much that when E.T. was announced years later i was terrified it was going to be another alien horror movie. Cheers.
the point of the underwear shot was so they could put it on posters and keep me from seeing it til I was in my 30s. All of the horror movies at the time were not just sexist but hugely rapey but we weren't allowed to say so without men saying 'oh be a sport, its just sex'.
Ooo as brits you might appreciate these facts. Ridley Scott (the director) was supposed to be the set designer for the third story of classic Doctor Who back in 1963. The 6 part story was "Dalek" in which the famous dw baddie was first introduced and thus would have been designed by Scott. Instead, he got the chance to go to school for directing and so the iconic Daleks were designed by Raymond Cusick when Scott backed out. Who knows what daleks would have looked like in the hands of Scott. Furthermore, in 1975 (four years before "Alien"), the Doctor Who story "The Ark in Space" aired, in which a ship of cryogenically frozen earth colonists is taken over by an alien species. This parasitic alien species breeds by laying eggs inside the human bodies. The Doctor teams up with a serious and capable female crewmate called Vira to stop the aliens from completely taking over the ship and infecting all the humans. The aliens surprise the main characters by growing and developing at an alarmingly fast pace from egg to insect-like full grown alien. This DW story tipped into the relatively new "horror space opera" genre, which was ultimately popularized by Alien a few years later. I'm not sure if Ridley Scott (who was undoubtedly very familiar with Doctor Who) ever cited his inspiration explicitly but it's widely believed that this DW story was one of the inspirations for Scott (and potentially the writers) when working on Alien. The parallels are too strong, more than I even mentioned here. On a different note, Dan said "this is the r***iest alien I've ever seen." That is in fact what it was supposed to represent. There aren't many movies that evoke horror through metaphorical or literal male r***, even to this day, so I can see why men especially would have found this movie disturbing when it first released. In an equal reversal of gender representation on screen, we got an excellent action heroine with agency leading the story. This movie was ahead of its time in many ways.
Boys, boys, boys...here I am to school ya:I was born in 1971 (not quite Jurassic era, but the plains were still dark with Buffalo, snarky American humor still lives lofl) so saw this in theater at age 9...my astrophysicist father had already schooled me well in both sci-fi & horror, so I was fine, but as Dad (still) enjoys telling this story adults all over the audience were screaming like dying bunny rabbits & one woman apparently passed out during the most iconic scene. 😂😂❤
Great reaction guys. Parker tries to tackle the Alien because had he used the flamethrower he would have hit Lambert , Ripley tries to turn off the self destruct because the Alien was blocking her way to the shuttle , I think at the end in the shuttle the Alien has wedged itself into the alcove until Ripley blasts it free that's why he does not attack .
It's hinted more than a few times in the franchise that they're considerably intelligent, chances are good that it was not seeing Ripley as threat and was content to just rest and wait her out. Or as others have mentioned, it was getting ready to hibernate until more victims were available and it wasn't stuck on a tiny shuttle.
12:20 As someone from the Netherlands who cycled against the wind for 6 years - I agree for the most part. I would literally talk to the wind and get another huge push 😂 But wet snow with ice chunks is the worst by far.

Thanks, Dan and Jack... and then Jack and Dan! 👾
I always thought that Alien was the first “grungy ship” aesthetic 💜
49:50 he didn't use the flamethrower because he would've hit lambert as well
he told her to get out of the way but she was frozen in fear
39:24 Ah, yes, the jazz-hands jump scare! I was waiting for this part; after more than 40 years, I see it still works perfectly....
Jacks hangry outbursts in this video are gold
3:02 Was there anything before this?! 😮 Scifi have been a thing since they started making movies, from the very beginning. Georges Méliès anyone?
12:59 Or more likely protection against other humans.
I love this series, hope you both enjoy watching them! Looking forward to the reactions
would love to see you watch 2001: A Space Odyssey. is this the genesis of sci-fi inclusion on the channel?
I've been wanting to watch 2001: A Space Odyssey for a loooong time so absolutely sign me up to more sci-fi on this channel!
@@JackDanReact if you like the visual style of Interstellar, 2001 would probably be for you.
And 2010. Criminally underrated.
@@miller-joel it is pretty great
I was scared we werent gonna be able to see Dan's legs 💀💀
This channel is going to become an Only Fans channel soon bc of Dan's legs
He didn't use "the weapon", because he would hit Lambert, who was paralyzed with fear and couldn't move out of the way. Which was rather clearly communicated to the audience by the usage of phrases like:
"Get out of the way."
"I can't get out of the way!"
"Get out of the way, Lambert! It's gonna kill us!"
"I can't!"
"Lambert, for Christ's sake, get out of the way!"
"Get out of the way, Lambert!"
Kane is effectively r*ped and forced to give "birth."
and undies fit right in....
Alien, AKA Invading your personal space IN SPACE
Snuck in to see Alien at the theatre when I was 15, and had to walk home in the dark afterwards. It was foggy. Didn't sleep right for weeks.
No way! We got Jack and Dan switch before GTA VI????
He couldn't use the flame thrower because she was in the way. Ripley tried to stop the destruction because she had to go back for the cat. Oh, watch Prometheus before Romulus.
Ripley is the greatest sci fi hero in all of recorded time, she goes on to do about 5 more films where she gets pummelled.
my mum saw this in the cinema (She's 65). She said it was great because they completely kept the chest bursting scene out of the advertising. I already knew going in because of pop culture but it must have been awesome seeing something like that with no warning in 1979
He couldn’t use the flamethrower because Lambert was in the way and wouldn’t move
I remember my thoughts back in the day were "Rawr rawr RAAAAWWWR rar rawr rawr....rawr." 😄
One of my all time favorite movies! ❤️
Dino Fossil here 😂
I watched Alien in the cinema when it was released.
How long do we need? 17 hours at least. Okay, it gonna take 25 hours at least! Lol!
oh what a treat! 2 horror movies back to back in the same week!
Guys, guys… 3:00 Doctor Who aired its first episode on the 23rd November 1963. You’re forgetting our national treasure🤣🤣
I saw Alien 👽 in the Theater. My Best Friend had seen it before and she screamed out "Dallas" when he died. Scared me out of my seat.
I love that Ridley Scott used his kids in the Space Jockey scene to enhance the scale of it.
Dos videos en una semana? I'm loving this!
She tried to stop the self destruct because the alien was between her and the shuttle
Also, the cat is called Jones.
Just enjoyed this reaction with tea 😋 I’m glad you have started this film series very much enjoyed guys and I look forward to the next one 🙏❤️
Cheers.
Saturday night, just got in from work, saw this...red wine in hand and ready for banter and fun 😎
I got so excited when I saw this on my feed! Can't wait to see you guys react to this franchise!
Hey back again with another video!! Love to see it
the point of the underwear shot was so they could put it on posters and keep me from seeing it til I was in my 30s.
Love your humor🤣 Looking forward to the rest of the franchise!
10:11 Now you know why he had that information on deck! 😂😂 He literally had all the answers out there!
Prometheus (2012) is my comfort movie. Along side, Intersteller, of course.
I think the practical, effects in this film are brilliant, and still hold up well.
Weapons on ship are for pirates. There were no known living aliens in this universe, but they had found ancient alien ruins.
British are the villian in old movies because you speak so much better than we do and we are mad about it. 🙂
Some people supposed that it was dormant for molting or simply entering a sleep cycle.
@ebashford5334 yes good point did not consider that , or maybe he was just exhausted from a whole day of killing and having a quick power nap .🤣🤣🤣
