I’m a 2.5 month white belt 🤣. I’ve been trying to find ways to start rolls other than just wait for an attack and try to defend. This is super helpful!
Thank you for this video. We don't start from the knees very often, but sometimes we do when the mats are packed and don't have the space to go full takedowns. I really appreciate the little details you convey.
The "from the knees" is a big problem. No fight starts that way, unfortunately most people start this way b/c of space concerns....it's a bad aspect of BJJ.
Thank you so so much for posting this video. I was always unsure what to do starting from the knees. I would always pull guard. This was very detailed and informative! Post more of these types of videos please!
Great ideas for when starting on the knees. I don't usually start on my knees if my opponent does, but some of the newer guys do and these are some thing I can try out and show them. Thanks!
First time back on the mat after nearly a year off and got absolutely pummelled starting from the knees in Gi. Wish I’d watched this first! Fair to say I’ll be studying this before my next class, thanks
I don't have anyone start from the knees, even in our fundamentals classes. Instead we just do 3 & 3 from guard, or half guard, or put the higher belt in mount or side body etc. Seen too many people, even after being explained etiquette, just pull someone over their knees and get tweaked.
Thank you dude. Now I can see why my arm drags are so slopy and my Knee tap doesn't work. Armdrags are like karate hikite (pulling the hand back in the hip as hard as you can) while you drive the attacking hand, in this case the sleeve/wrist hand. And knee taps looks a lot easier if you bend your elbows in. Greetings from Brazil.
@@StillRolling I don't know if it only happens in local clubs around here(in a 70 miles radius I mean). But BJJ teachers are not into teaching those details, they think more you roll, the better you get. Sure this is the truth in some cases, but different people learn in different ways
I am a huge believer in efficiency. Jiu-Jitsu is designed to not expend a lot of energy, especially against bigger opponents. If you don't know the details it is hard to be efficient therefore causing you to work harder with less results. Rolling is fun but it's just a test run for the techniques you have learned👍
@@StillRolling The most fun part is that I'm big guy myself (6'1") and around 85kg(Sorry, but I don't know my mass in imperial system, only my height) and I strugle like hell due the lack of those details.
If all fights and competition starts from the standing position WHYYYY do all BJJ gyms insist on starting from the knees? Why are we giving up the importance of a takedown?
ua-cam.com/video/ZH76Zc9AeAA/v-deo.html I teach everything from everywhere. I heavily uncourage takedowns at Leviathan as you see in the shared link. I also want to give options to others though who may have to start on the knees more at their gym🤙
@@StillRolling I wasn’t accusing you of not doing so. But As a soon to be purple belt, Ive seen enough practitioners that swear stand-up grappling adds to the risk of injury and reserve it only for competition preparation or competition. Never mind the blown out knees and elbows of some submissions who don’t see them coming. I mean, high school wrestling is safe enough for administrators and parents for the kids. Why can’t there be more emphasis on takedowns? Guard is not where we start. Additionally, ban pulling guard. Penalize that crap as stalling or being passive. it makes the sport so boring.
I disagree with banning pulling guard. I'd much rather see someone pull guard and and get a quick submission than someone land a takedown and lay on them because they are ahead in points. Exciting matches depend on the people. Not the techniques or rules. I encourage people to learn all aspects of the art👍
@@StillRolling I suppose the rules dictate the techniques. Gaming the system, if you will. I believe you’d attract more students if it was more fun to watch. If it was more fun to watch, it would be more popular than on flo grappling, or more popular than exhibition matches of karate combat or UFC fight pass. It’s just so disappointing to see world class athletes in the finals shake hands then sit on their asses. 🤦🏻♂️
@@StillRolling even Kron Gracie showed his ass with pulling guard in MMA during his UFC debut. BJJ is losing its traction from the days of Royce Gracie.
@@StillRolling LOL! Went on a no gi Friday & my blue belt opponent told me to go for a takedown on him. After 5 months I didn’t know any. He had to show me one. On my last month we started to learn some. I got body slammed & bruised a rib. Out for 2 weeks but not before I forked over $1800 for a year membership. Then COVID-1984. They just reopened last week. I had to roll with a mask on after getting tested and showing them I’m all clear. Shit sucks rn. Makes me not want to go.
As a community we should just absolutely reject the idea that starting from your knees is acceptable. Our coach does not allow anyone to start from the knees. Because it’s dumb 🤷🏻♂️.
I always have my guys start one sitting and one kneeling. There is absolutely no point to midget wrestling. It doesn't translate to real takedowns and wastes time and energy. If I see two white belts midget wrestling I immediately break it up and throw them with some of my blue/purple belts.
There are some competition rules that mandate starting from knees, some combat jujitsu, i know its stupid, but you need to know the rules and use them for your advantage
Honestly I do not see any benefit of starting on the knees. It just makes you alienated to wrestling and judo which you will need in competition and in self defense. It also makes bjj a lot more unrealistic and keeps you from progressing.
The place I train is small u throw 12-15 people in there and it’s tight rolling let alone trying to stand up and wrestle someone. Also it’s not as intimidating to a new guy that isn’t use to going from standing to getting put down. I see your point just point. And totally agree
Knee wrestling is totally useless in bjj training, if you want to wrestle do it standing ; if you don 't, pull guard or try to pass depending of what training partner did

Training BJJ thinking it mimics fights is a bad aspect of BJJ.
Most people start this way, because most injuries happen while starting from your feet.
