  • If you're in the process of soundproofing a wall, you might have heard of mass loaded vinyl and green glue noise proofing compound. A lot of people has been asking me, which one of the two is the best sound proofing material to make a soundproof wall?
    These two products are very different, where green glue is a liquid that is meant to be applied between two layers of drywall, creating a barrier. Mass loaded vinyl is more of a physical product where it is a heavy, dense rubber like material that works very well at blocking and also absorbing lower frequency noises.

    On the mlv do you use acoustic caulk between each 4 foot wide section and overlap the mlv? Or just butt them up and caulk at the seams?

    What would be the best way to soundproof a decentralized ventilation system with heat recovery? To install them you have to drill a 180mm hole in the wall, the tube from the fan itself is only 160mm. What would be the best soundproofing material to fill in the gap? I have found construction foam with 63 decible noise blocking, or would green glue or mass loaded vinyl be better?

      Mass loaded vinyl, it will also help with absorbing vibrations coming through the ventilation system. You can get some self adhesive MLV.

    I'm building me a music shed. For playing my guitars and drums I'm gonna use mass loaded vinyl. With plywood

    I'm confused. Did I miss the link to the carpet glue? Also, do you just use duct tape to seal the seams of the MLV?

    So i have a bar three houses down and my house has been getting hit by just the bass. So we are hearing beats & booms no music in our bedrooms and sometimes throughout the house. I tired everything to get the bar to lower the bass but for them, they think their bass is okay and won't do anything. I'm thinking of putting mass-loaded vinyl on the windows and covering them with drywall and also mlv on the walls and doubling the drywall as my only hope in trying to reduce the noise. I also was thinking of putting up a 9 foot fence and adding mass like mvl and maybe something else to at least be a semi-barrier outside.. Im not sure if any of these will work but its maddening that they have their bass till 2 every other day.

      Yah I did slowly but the windows are the biggest weakness since there 6 feet high so I had to drywall over them

    Why not both? Could put green glue between the double layers dry wall panels. Add mass loaded vinyl onto the panel and then cover with another panel. I know it's very expensive but thats how I would do it

    • @soundproofguide
      @soundproofguide  Рік тому +1

      You certainly can do both! A lot of people has installed both products and we’re very happy with the results. One good thing about having green glue is that it will get in between the seems of the mass loaded vinyl and create a better seal.

      @@soundproofguideif you say the green glue will seal the seams of the mass loaded vinyl, that means that you're putting mass loaded vinyl on a solid wall and then a green glue layer and then drywall. Correct?

    Does anyone know if there's earplugs that can actually block low frequency/neighbor thumping on the ceiling sounds? Is there such thing of an earplug? I wished one existed

    careful when buying MLV - be sure to double check weight/ thickness and actual square footage.

    If you need to have the vinyl with no gaps; then what exactly is the point of it in a fence…. If it can work on a fence, then clearly you’re saying it can work in a wall with gaps

    • @Tennouseijin
      @Tennouseijin 10 місяців тому +1

      My guess is it wasn't used for soundproofing the fence. Maybe for privacy. Maybe to stop stuff from going through. Being so heavy and dense, it would be very effective at stopping say thrown balls and toys. Could work as an archery backstop for backyard archers for example. If put all the way around the fence, maybe it would work well for stopping animals from crossing too (some animals like to damage fences or dig under them, I presume such a heavy material might discourage some of them)
      Of course there could be cheaper alternatives, but the context was 'what to do with excess if you have leftovers'

    JFC this guy LOVES listening to himself talk.... So, much so, I'm not sure he knows what he's talking about, because, at this point he just uses soundproofing as an excuse to make UA-cam videos. Speaking of which, he could consolidate his 20 videos that all have this same problem into one, and save the viewer a lot of time. Because, there's still multiple generations of people who don't sit around watching internet videos, simply for the sake of.................watching internet videos.
    "The best way to soundproof a wall is to begin adding mass."....🤦‍♂

    There is nothing you can do to soundproof. This is all a waste of time and money. Concrete walls and floors. That's it.

      Concrete is highly porous and a terrible sound proofing material.
