"More and more the trend is people staying home to work" Oh, if you only knew, Jeff from November 2019 x)

Lol, and $70 in materials when the green glue cost $40. 🤣 Thanks for the videos Jeff. Great job like always.

9:56 is where to start watching for the sound proofing solution. Mass loaded vinyl. 1/8” thick and 1 lbs per square foot. Heavier is better so 2 lbs per square foot is better. Purchase in 25’ rolls.
PS Carter omg thanks 🙏🏽
Alex Luthor YES. So, much jibber jabber.
PS Carter thank you ❤️💕❤️
Thank you so much. This guy just talks and talks
I can't thank you enough.
as someone who works all night long and I appreciate you thinking about us
Thank you for this honest video. You nailed it when you said that a lot of people are getting paid a lot to sell the Roxul hype that is ineffective. You are also the first person to accurately explain the types of sound transmission (outside of the professional audio industry). Mass loaded vinyl is a proven product that has been used for many years.
10:46 "so what you want to do is remove your baseboards and tear out your floor. It'll only take a few minutes."
Until you find you’ve got chipboard tongue and groove boards to the sole plate 🤣
Literally LOL at this part 🤣🤣🤣
I've been critical for lots of this guy's practices, but I gotta give him his due on these soundproofing episodes. Nice job!
I love your content man and I really like how down to earth and realistic you are with construction. Thank You from Lithuania!
I'm thinking about turning my home office into an office/jam room so I find these videos useful for gaining information. Thanks.
Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY CHeErs, say something else.
Pranavan Sada no dude!
That’s his catchphrase.
I had seen this product in action at the last Building Show I went to in Toronto. I've never been more blown away by something so inconspicuous hahahaha! It really does make the best of differences. Just be wary of your vents and registers, they could ruin your renovation.
Hi Jeff,
I enjoy your entertaining and informative DIY videos. Although I'm not doing any DIY projects, when I watch your videos, I could at least "vicariously" do DIY projects.
Anyhow, on this topic of soundproofing a ceiling against impact noise, you had a shorter video where you first said that a "usual" way to do this is to hang dry wall and then hang another sheet over it, which was covered with Green Glue (@$40 for each 4' x 8' section). You estimated the cost as around $9,000 for professional installation. Then you suggested a much cheaper and more effective way, which was to treat the floor upstairs by placing carpeting over thick sound absorbing padding. Where is this video? I need to show it to my friend who is actually considering the "usual" way to stop impact noise from the ceiling.
Thanks, Jeff. And keep up the good work.
(If anyone know where I can find this video, I'll be happy if you tell me.)
watched both your videos, so glad i found them! Hydronic heating in basement only, no HVAC registers - got it! there is still the main HVAC trunk which runs length of basement ceiling and its 2' wide.. i guess i should box it out, R12 insulate and two layers of 5/8" drywall with green glue?
Skip to 9:54 if you're simply curious about the material used.
Thx
doing gods work m8.
Excellent! More information for me to tuck away for when we do our next floor project. Thank you!!
Finally got the vent installed in the bathroom. Hubby opened the box of vent tubing and thought he'd opened one of those joke snake in a can things. 10 ft of vent tubing compressed into an 18 inch box. Wish I'd recorded it. 😆
That is like a jack in the box. Cheers!
Hey Jeff!
Thanks for all your awesome content. What would be your best advise for dealing with massive squaky floors on a bottom unit coming from the 2nd floor?.. no access due to ceiling sheetrock
As usual, very informative.
I'd love to see a video on how to install a new sectional garage door, including how to source the parts.
I love the video and get a lot of good information from them. Would you be able to make a video about how to apply and remove masking tape to prevent peeling or damage the paint?
Today I learned that to soundproof my second floor flat I need to break into the upstairs neighbors and replace his flooring. Knowledge
I used a layer of 1" think polystyrene insulation on one side of the walls. It seemed to do a good job. If I were to do it again a would stagger the 2x4s on 2x6 base and header.
Hi Jeff. You really captured my attention when you started talking about the example of rental unit 00:05:00 however during the rest of the video what you recommend by changing the flooring above and applying MLV would only be applicable in the case of a house you own. What would be the recommendation when the people above/below your rental unit are other families?
Would have loved to hear a comparison! I've got old hardwood on the main floor and have been thinking about sound proofing to keep the basement noise out of the upstairs. This is a smart option.
cheers to the daytime sleeping community!
how would you add MLV to a hardwood floor? You would have to soundproof from underneath.
@@kajekage9410 Oh sorry I want to replace the floor eventually. It's old and needs to be replaced.
@@VampireOnline I think in your scenario with the joist cavities exposed there are definitely better options than MLV.
Awesome video and instruction!

Used this stuff on a wall shared between a (loud) music venue and an apartment building about 14 years ago. I can't believe I never thought to use it on floors!
How did i work out for you on the wall? I've been researching some cost-efficient ways to lessen the sound through a room wall myself.
@@mambi74 Hi I am looking to soundproof a bedroom from a teenagers room, did you find a good way to do that>
"more and more people are working from home...." damn you said a mouthful
Thanks man, this was extremely helpful for me.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY you think that and a 5/8 drywall will soundproofing a wall?
Jeff, assuming one could actually afix MLV to the underside of the joists (staples and a lot of help?) and then drywall over that, would this be an effective solution? If possible, this seems like a happy medium between removing and reinstalling the floor covering on the floor above or spending $17 per sq foot on the ceiling below.
Hi Jeff. Quick question: Does this vinyl roll have any VOC's in it? My concern about vinyl flooring is whether or not it has an odour as I'm really sensitive to it. If it does have VOC's, do you know of any soundproof flooring alternatives that won't stink? Thanks in advance!
Great vid. I will say though, rockwool does help significantly over nothing at all. Definitely not soundproof though.
Living in a second floor condo, would taking up the flooring, adding insulation from above and using MLV be sufficient to sound proof noise from below?
Did you end up using the mass loaded.vinyl on the floor how did it turn out
Good Video- however, if you have squeaky floors, its because of the plywood. I ripped out all the subfloor, put in Roxul Safe and Sound in between the joists, installed a new 3/4" Advantech subfloor, then rolled the Massloaded Vinyl on top and then added another layer of 3/4" Advantech again. I created a sandwhich between 2 layers of Advantech with the MLV.. Results were amazing.
Thanks for the video. very helpful. For an aluminum porch/Florida room (attached to home) with sliding glass doors - would you recommend I glue MLV on the outside of the aluminum walls on both sides to block out the noise from neighbors on both sides? or dO I need to glue it inside with dry wall on top? I hope the exterior option is sufficient as the finished look doesn't matter. Interior will cost 3-4X more
In my 850sqft lath & plaster house with solid wood doors we have to yell at each other to hear just the next room over. It's awesome.
Redid all the wiring and plumbing and kept everything intact because we did NOT want to deal with the nightmare of removing plaster. I'm getting good at working with mud as we go around and refinish all the rooms/patch the holes lol
Jeff and team great info. Thank you!
Question, you made another video showing another product called MSIABATEC 3.9 FT. X 25.7 FT. X 1MM PREM. Which product should be used for sound proofing and underlayment? MSI Abayec and this Mass Vinyl or one or the other?
Another great video! thanks. really well presented and produced films on this channel.
I will report back after I have implemented some of the advice given here.
Thanks for the video - so do you put the mass vinyl directly between plywood and the linoleum, tiles or luxury vinyl plank?
I love your videos, their so helpful. Thank you
Cheers Adele!
Ive done a lot of soundproofing work in the past, however, I recently had a friend want to use OSB for a permanent floor. His question to me is if he could use MLV between the 2 layers of OSB. Im not sure how that would work especially when it comes to moisture control and the thought that it would not be decoupled from the structure. Any thoughts, thanks.
Maybe late to the game here, how’s it work under 3/4” solid wood? My contractor says because I’ve planned for 5” wide planks the bond with glue and nails won’t be as strong to the 3/4” OSB subfloor. Thanks, love your vids
Hi Jeff, thanks again for your videos! You're a pleasure to listen to and I appreciate all the useful information. Can you tell me where you bought your MLV? Thanks again:)
Hi! thank you for the information, would this work from room to room? if you put it before the sheet rock on the sidewalls?
thanks for highlighting a better and cheaper option! for my project i'm more concerned about sound transmission the other direction. from my garage shop to the upstairs living space. i'm assuming the MLV will be a good thing do upstairs, but pondering additional components. hat channel. possibly installing sound board to the under part of the upper flanges of the TJI's before insulation etc. also no can lights. those seem to act as megaphones! any thoughts you might have would be highly appreciated! thanks for the good video/info.
Thank you for advice. I was looking to add some soundproofing to the second floor flooring and will now seriously consider mass loaded vinyl option. Instead of going 3/4" solid hardwood as I originally planned I may get 5/8" engineered hardwood with 1/8" mass loaded vinyl which is typically 1 lb/sf. Even though 1 ponds per square foot of additional dead load may sound as a lot of extra weight this is only 150 pounds for a 150 square feet room.
You don't recommend using QuietWalk underlayment sold by Home Depot for soundproofing he floor/ceiling?
Hey I also thought about installing this under my engineer flooring. Was wondering did you nail or staple down your engineer floor ? Not sure if I can staple down engineer floor on mass vinyl
@@justanotherchannel6097hi. i have the same question. Have you installed yours yet?
Very good product
I used it in all rooms
Hi, Very nice and informative videos. You are very good, detailed and knowledgeable about your stuff. In your opinion, can I use high density foam tape in between the point of contact of HAT CHANNEL & the joist and then screw in the hat channel directly on to the joists? Sound dampening clips are too expensive ($6.00 or more) and by putting foam tape in between the point of contact will probably be less than 1/10th of the cost. With your experience, do you think it will work?
Great suggestion! It would have been nice to have heard the chair upstairs slide over it tho. I wonder how quite this would be if you put it undernearth carpet underlay/carpet.
that would be really ideal. Cheers!
thank you for this candid video
Can you put MLV on the ceiling before adding 5\8 drywall? I live in a condo. What options do I have with an existing ceiling?
Thanks for the info Jeff! Any idea where I can get good price for mass loaded vinyl? (Mtl, QC)
Incredible! Thanks for this. One question- with mass loaded vinyl, is radiant floor heating still possible?
I use wet poured rubber, on top of the rubber 1 inch osb boards, and parquet with impact sound insulation.
Poured rubber is cheap and it compensates for the unevenness of the floor.
Any advice for soundproofing and insulating folding garage doors beyond cutting foam panels?
Do you need an underlayment like QuietWalk when using MLV on the floor and going over with vinyl planks? Or will just the MLV work?
Need a quick recommendation please! I've put in fiber glass batts between ceiling joists. 1 layer of 5/8 dry wall has been installed so far. I can still make out what they are saying from upstairs renters. Can hear the walking thump. What would you recommend I do? Renters above will allow me to modify upstairs if needed. Upstairs floor is the square vinyl thin tiles.
Hi,
I have a project on an old Victorian flat and want to do my best to minimise base transferring through the old floorboards. There is ash between the floors but it’s an old property and we can hear everything from above. My plan was to use green glue joist tape. Then screw the boards down tight and seal all the gaps with acoustic sealant. Then 1/2 inch plywood screwed to that. That makes up subfloor, decent acoustic underlay and hardwood will be on top the finished floor (probably floating). Would you recommend sandwiching a layer of MLV between the floorboards and ply?
Great video, any concerns on using it under bathroom floor?
Hi, this is a great video for learning as I am building my house. I am a woman and needs a lot of education of building. Thank you and I hale from Kwajalein, Marshall Islands.
Glad it was helpful!
I appreciate your video. Great information
Thanks for the video. Is this method useful in sound proofing noise from downstairs to the upstairs room? For example: The floor level is the living room with TV and speakers. Above the living room is the kids bedroom. Will the mass vinyle installed in the kids bedroom block the sounds coming from downstairs while watching a movie for example?
I am currently building an apartment in the attic of one of my rentals. It’s our first time using Mass Loaded Vinyl. I was wondering if there is any advantage in installing the MLV between the subfloor and the joists, instead of between the subfloor and the vinyl plank flooring.
Thanks!
NOW, I am a subscriber of your channel and other links, which means that I have the right to abuse with all kind of questions. Muchas gracias..!
i just gutted an entire 3 fam for rental. im replacing all the subfloor (Because the floors are uneven so im shimming all the joists to get a perfect level floor)
i want to use MLV, am i better off putting itt on top of the subfloor, and then using Luxury Vinyl Plank? or should i just put the MLV on the floor ceiling below? i would LOVE to hear what your thoughts are!!
Hey Jeff - if I am pulling up subfloors in order to insulate for temperature then relaying subfloor and adding hardwood floor - where is the best place to put the MLV? can it go directly underneath hardwood or should it go under the subfloor? Thanks!
Hey Jeff, you talked a bit about resilent channel in taprevious video but in more recent ones, you are using "hat" channel to decouple the drywall. Would using insulation + hat channel + 2x 5/8 X-Rated be a good solution to cut the noise from upstairs if you cannot redo the flooring ?
That is so true about the rockwool and drywall being ineffective for sound proofing. I have 3/4" ply subfloors. I put R32 for 10" studs and 1"pink XPS over that for a ceiling in our cold room which in below the back rec room upstairs. You can still hear noise. For 20$ a square foot I would rather install lead sheeting underneath!
There is no 1 solution for quality soundproofing. It is all about the assembly. Cheers!
I have watched the UA-cam videos and instructions. And they are excellent. The ceiling the walls but how do you sound proof the doors. I might have missed something. And watched it twice. But I still don’t see it thank you Patrick.
-i live in a house that was built in the 40's and it has lathe n plaster = the density eats up sound BUT NOW MY BRO HAS GOTTEN INTO VIDEO GAMES AND DESPITE THE DAMPENING THE SOUND GOES UP AND THROUGH AIRDUCTS SO I'M HERE RESEARCHING :)
My garage has a table saw, a band saw, a dust extractor, sanders and more machines of the same kind.
How do I sound proof it to avoid sending high pitched noise to the rest of the house (ceiling and 2 dry walls)? Can MLV help?
Great, easy to understand video! Can you paint these for a better aesthetic look?
Is MLV the best soundproofing option for new engineered wood floors? Thank you!
I appreciate the info, you actually addressed my question (unlike too many other videos on here) but it took way too long to get there. Just felt like you could have skipped the first 7 min.
You sir, have earned yourself a sub.
Im totally doing that vinyl idea, can I keep my cork underlayment? Also is the vinyl mold resistant? Good videos...ps. I love See Jane Drill (too) she explains stuff softly like your 8 yrs old😄 👍 your vids give me more confidence to SAVE THAT MONEY!!
Does this change anything in how you install flooring over top? Does it need to be glued down before putting flooring on top? I have a basement suite and I’m planning on redoing the floors on the main level so I have the opportunity to add insulation or soundproofing
Air tightness, mass and layering with air gaps. That's the order of most effective ways to soundproo :)
Great tips. Where is your link to laying down mass vinyl?
Hey Jeff...just found your channel yesterday and I'm binge watching as much as possible! The question I have is this...I am laying down new subfloor on my whole main floor. This house is 100 plus years old. In your vid about sub floors you say that what is needed is a total of 10 1/8" subfloor. Do I need to adjust the thickness of the new subfloor to accommodate for the 1/8" mass loaded vinyl or do I go ahead and make sure the subfloor is 10 1/8" and then add the 1/8" mass loaded vinyl on top without worrying?
Is sound insulation also good heat/cool insulat.
Thanks for the information. Would you put the vinyl between two timber flooring sheets similar to how the green glue is installed or would you just put under the carpet??
Thanks
Brad
I would not use it under carpet. just go with the regular underlayment.
Great video, after installing the mass loaded vinyl can I just lay the hardwood floor on top for installation?
please let me know too thanks
@@giam9990 I also would like to put engineered flooring over this. Should be stable enough and can hammer thru?
Super helpful thank you!!
For low celilings where Resiliant Chanell eats too much headroom: Use Joist Tape on top of Joists before flooring. Use Joist Tape underneath Joists for Ceilings. Safe and Sound between floors. Clay Patch fixtures. Quiet Rock or Double 1/2 inche drywall cleiling with 1/4 inch greenboard (soundboard) type insulation between sheets. Construction Adheasive on all side points where Joist meets subfloor above. Wrap HVAC with roll flashing. Just what I think. Of course MLV under flooring is great IF you donlt have to rip upanything.
Amazing video! I am planning on transforming my basement into a music rehearsal room/ studio. I was planning on the mineral wool insulation plus drywall green glue ceiling. It's not practical for me to tear up the nice hardwood floors above- can I add the MLV to the ceiling under a layer of drywall? Thanks!!!!
Yes. Jeff did another video on this. ua-cam.com/video/xXHeIOEOiAA/v-deo.html
Great job, Jeff!!!
Can this be installed on existing hardwood or laminate flooring without ripping it apart and just introducing new floating floor with a combination of MLV and vinyl or laminate? What is the STC rating of MLV? Are STC 60+ products good for residential?
Yup. This roll at Homedepot is$125 for just 4’x10’. Very expensive! Any recommendations where in the U.S. we can get some cheaper cost mlv?
Thank you, Jeff! Will this solution help with squeaking sound coming from upstairs?
great question. If you have the flooring removed to install this then make sure you screw down the subfloor to the joists. It is most .likely only nailed down and that is the source of the squeak. If that is all you are trying to solve then the soundproof pad isn't necessary. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I am also trying to solve impact sound with roxul and resilient channels, I wonder if that would be enough to solve squeaks in case my neighbors will not want to have their floors open.Thank you!
In a previous video of yours, you mentioned using Mass Loaded Vinyl under Vinyl flooring to cut down on noise transfer between two floors (apartments). Can you lay the vinyl flooring directly over the Mass Loaded Vinyl, or does another surface need to be laid in between?
this what i want to know
@@Bubbles-qh7ez I think you can lay a floating floor directly on the MLV. It is very solid.
Thank you
Hello Jeff , would really appreciate that you follow up on this Impact Noise as I trying to figure out how to remove this Impact Noise. Thanks
Could you cut some and apply it on the back of your drywall from below? Or does it need to be just below your floor?
So, green glue is great for creating that sound absorbing space, but a bit on the expensive side. What if you sandwiched strips of MLV between the 5/8 to create the barrier? Do a cheap spray adhesive & strips to the back side of the 2nd layer of 5/8 before install? Would this achieve the same results at a lower cost?
This wouldn't do the same thing. Green Glue creates a constrained layer damping system because it is a viscoelastic material. MLV is not.
I have a double brick-walled house for the basement and first floor. I removed the old subfloor on the first floor and installed two layers of 5/8 tongue and groove with green glue between them. For the basement ceiling I will be using resilient channel or hat Channel with 5/8 drywall for fire separation of the basement apartment.
The bottom of the joists are of differing heights. What is the best way to shim the resilient channel? Or do the sound isolation clips give you the ability to adjust height?
unless the difference is more than 1/2 inch from joist to joist the clips will sort it all out. Cheers!
Someone forgot to put the link box in your vid when you point at it at the end. Great tip by the way, thank you!
Thanks for that! Cheers!
Hey Jeff, great video. Where can I buy MLV in Toronto?
Would this reduce rain noise if glued to a steel office shed roof and/or ceiling? Maybe with expanding foam adhesive on the edges?
Thanks for the information
I am ready to use MLV to soundproof my walls and floor.
Does it harm to our health? As it will expose a lot in the air with some smell.
Appreciate for the help 😉
Thank you very much
since these materials are covered there is very little exposure to off gasing. Funny how nobody complains about getting a new car and all the off gasing that occurs there.
Home RenoVision DIY yes I am planning to use MLV on the floor, walls, ceiling as well in my very small bedroom. Just want to make sure it doesn’t cause any harm to body😀
Hi Jeff, thanks for all you awesome videos! I have a couple questions about the MLV. Does it need to be fastened down when used on a floor and should the seams be taped? Am I able to glue Vinyl plank flooring to it, or do I have to add another layers of subfloor?
never glue anything to a floating layer!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I’ve also heard that some adhesives can be bad for MLV, so I guess my question was more about whether I can glue vinyl plank flooring to MLV or not. I would definitely fasten the MLV down if I was to glue VPF down to it. I’m thinking it might just be easiest to use the floating Vinyl planks instead of the glue down ones.
so far im super impressed. Question, Does this work both ways? I'm trying to keep the sound from getting out,as in power tools.
Yes it will
Any comparisons of the mlv vs the rubber underlayment Trademark offers?
