  • The Sheffield Supertram is one of the youngest metro systems in the Uk, a case study for implementing Tram-Trains and overall an example of what can be achieved. So how did the system come about, what preceded it, and what is the future for SuperTram?

the issue w the tram system is that it bypasses a lot of student areas - the west of the city (broomhill and crookes) are completely cut off from the tram network

My solution is building track going up the hill then curving down the street near children's hospital then going up the hill connecting these areas then connect to the existing Malin Bridge line and turn back towards Hillsborough back into town

given how short the purple route is, maybe that could be extended there?

@@QuantumScratcher yeah or combine it with the blue route and extend it up to the Moor the purple route is one of the least profitable lines and one the least used so once a hour there will 2 blue route services Malin Bridge - herdings Park and herdings Park - Cathedral one would be like the original purple route other service would be longer one up to Malin Bridge so more people would use it.

hopefully, they decide to use the railway line that goes through darnall towards woodhouse, like a TT2, making use of underused railway lines.

What a nice video! I'm continuously amazed about the great content continuing to be made everywhere on UA-cam. I've watched other videos about the Sheffield super Tram, but this one was a great overview. The only suggestion I would give is to make the tram lines on the map a bit thicker, maybe colourful so you can spot them out better.

And therein lies the problem with Supertram - the City Fathers! Whilst other cities have developed and expanded their tram systems, apart from the spur to Rotherham Parkgate, the system remains unaltered from it's original plan. The hospitals aren't served, and there are suburbs and their corridors who are desperate to have a tramline into the city centre, but there are no plans. The council has form here, there have been numerous ideas and projects other than Supertram over the years, that have become nothing more than a headline and an artist's impression on the front page of the local newspaper. There seems to be an inability or will to get anything done. The words 'piss up' and 'brewery' seem to be quite apt.

Thing is I know what extensions this system need 1st to the Moor that branch the terminus would be located where most buses turn right near the dual carriage way before London Road then turn left around the roundabout back into town this would a purple route extension with 1 tram per hour down there the other purple tram would terminate at Cathedral as usual. my 2nd extension is to extend the tram train to Doncaster and Adwick we would electrify the railway to connect these areas of SY together there would also be work down to sheffield and other intermediate stations to get the trams as far as Nottingham on the national railway network and eventually to Manchester to supplement trains. My final extensions would Be to extend the Blue and yellow routes to hall park head and Stocksbridge.

@@sglenny001 I would do it so it would use the existing train infrastructure with the Lower platforms for the tram trains also converting the line from 750DC to 25KV so other electric trains can use the tracks up to Rotherham more class 399s would be needed so getting 7 more would improve the efficiency of the service. Also to alleviate Northern rail services in Rotherham you have a Rotherham Parkgate - Sheffield station service calling at Rotherham Central, Meadowhall and Sheffield where it terminates inside the main station.

Sheffield Supertram is what I would like to ride on as I never been to Sheffield before. And they have got the tram-train (Class 399) which operates to Rotherham Parkgate.

no new routes but apparently in 2025 the trams will be handed over to another company though
