I came here to laugh at a penis-headed demon, and ended up getting a basic understanding of how to achieve enlightenment and separation from the infinite cycle of life and death.
Mara being sometimes of a female gender may be connected to the fact that Mara is also a female death goddess in Hinduism (and the older Vedic religion). Atlus likes to put references to Hinduism as much as Buddhism, so I think that may be the reason. Interestingly the Sanskrit name shares a common etymology with many deities and terms relating to death and perishing of other Indo European languages and can be reconstructed safely to the ancestor language Proto-Indo European (PIE). It also suggests that the original PIE deity was female (see also the Slavic deity Marzanna/Mara and Latvian Mara). It is also related to the Germanic folkore creatures known as "Mares" (as in "Nightmare").
I wonder if the wheels on Mara's chariot are supposed to represent him/she treading on the eightfold path. ( cause of the 8 spokes. To take it a tad further, the 5 spikes on the front: the 5 hindrances. Either way dope demon design, dope lore, dope video.

Learn well from The Buddha's example: Whenever you reach that moment in your life where you start seeing phallic monsters everywhere, go outside and touch grass. In seriousness, as a Zen Buddhist, this was an excellent and concise synopsis on the basics of Buddhism. The only minor pedantic quibble I have at all is saying that the Five Skandhas "belong to a person". Generally, in most modern interpretations of Theravada (Early) Buddhism, the doctrine of no self (anattā) is quite key. There are only Skandhas, there is, in truth, no underlying "person" or immutable, unchanging self/soul to possess them. So, a very bad summary of Buddhism can be: a religion about concluding and attempting accepting being alive is suffering and you accumulate literal karma points to determine if you get the good or bad ending of your life like a video game?
Yes, and your conscience is your moral guide for determining the karmic value of your actions. If you do something and your conscience isn't saying anything about it, such as eating meat or drinking wine, then that particular instance of the action will have neutral karma. However, as you change and gain understanding, such as how the meat is produced or that you become an angry drunk on wine, then the karmic value of the same actions may change as your understanding of those actions have changed. Intention is everything in karma. You cannot generate karma without intention.
Im writing a book based on mythology/religion/folklore and in the story there is a council of some of the head gods (Zeus, Odin, Huitzilopochtli, and some others) and Buddha was on the council right as he ascended to nirvana. In the lore of the story once Mara heard that Buddha ended up on the council he screamed in anger so loudly the entirety of the mortal realm of china could hear him

its interesting how Judeo-Christianity and Buddhism have so much in common, even their adversarial figures. It is also interesting how they come to different conclusions about life, while Buddhism deems creation as something flawed to be escaped, Judeo-Christianity sees it as something fundamentally good, even if tainted by evil. This really made me appreciate that experience and the lessons the video and play taught me. Thanks Tony for your educational and fantastically entertaining work!

Thanks for this great video! Could a video about Mara, Maruo, and the Maruology cult from SMT IV: Apocalypse be coming in the future? Maruo might be the single funniest thing in SMT. Maruo! Maruo! Maruo! 😆
I saw and communicated with this being when I vaped DMT. They are a very advanced and superior beings than human. Their clothing were so intricate and beautiful.
Ngl mara really sounds like the demiurge and buddha really sounds like a gnostic who achieved gnosis, I guess everyone reached a similar conclusion but with different ways of seeing it, 1+1 is 2 after all
I sort of get the picture that the idea of Ialdabaoth has taken some influence from Mara, seeing as Ialdabaoth too tries to trap humanity within the universe it rules over. Humanity is doomed to be reborn within the physical universe over and over again until they realise their inner spark and ascend into Pleroma, which too can be seen as a form of enlightenment. Quite similar ideas. I suppose this can also apply to the Abrahamic God, considering he has desires, demands and created the very system that creates suffering for those who do not act as told. He's quite the narcissist which makes me question if he's supposed to be a good guy. Sounds more like an insecure patronizing demon.
As for the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, He did not created suffering for us, it is we who, with our free will, made ourselves forever burdened ever since Adam and Eve ate the fruit of knowledge. And He is not the narcissistic one, the mankind is.
@@jamilgonzaga7081 He created the very rules upon which everything functions, along with knowing everything, meaning he knows how everything will go before anything is even set in motion, and he is the very being who decides the structure, functionality and flow of events as he knows everything. There is no free will. If he didn't want suffering, he wouldn't create an existence that allows for it nor a sequence of events that would ever lead to it, let alone creating the very idea in the first place. You may want to give more thought as to what omnipotence and omniscience truly mean. And such a being asks for mankind to treat it as its lord. Seems extremely narcissistic to me, if not demonic.
@@Arexion5293 It is true the He knows everything, and we can't comprehend how far He can see in the future. He is GOD after all. And He created the rules AFTER He saved the Israelites from the tyranny of Egypt. The people before that event are just following His commands in accordance of the salvation for the mankind and to follow His will. It might be a bitter pill to swallow, but it is how it is, considering that Eve was tempted by the Devil. He has the power to give life, and take them according to His will, and that is not what a narcissism looks like. Jesus was even prophesied in the book of Genesis, and that He is our only hope if we put our faith in Him. If there was no free will, we wouldn't be what we are today. We wouldn't have wifi, we wouldn't have clothes and make it stylish, we wouldn't have ART just like from the ancient history. I can think much more of the reasons why if you wanna know. It is our "narcissistic" trait that constantly mock God and blame every faults we have done as humans. That we'd think He didn't "solve" any of the humans' problems. We suffered because we gained the "knowledge of good and evil." That's why Nyx said "The moment the man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate." It may sound narcissistic to you, but I assure that it's truly not. Not when we know He is God and has the power above everything. I know a figment about arcanas because of the Persona franchise, but seeing Death as not the final Major arcana, means that it can be overcome, and that is only through Jesus Christ that God made everything possible. If you already know about the "tradition" of making a sacrificial lamb back in the Old testament, and from the book of Exodus, Leviticus, and so on, you get the symbol of Jesus here.
@@jamilgonzaga7081 He is all knowing, meaning he knows everything. He doesn't know far into future, he knows every single event in perfect detail and what causes them. When he creates anything, he is writing a book from start to finish in an instant. There is no unknowns. Choices do not exist to such knowledge, only what happens and why. Free will does not exist in context of omniscience. Adan and Eve were not tempted by "a devil". Devil is not a biblical concept, nor is the serpent stated to be something that only outside materials invented way after the fact. hasSatan is not the devil, and Haylel (Lucifer) too is just a title which Yeshua (Jesus) even uses for himself. Narcissism is to demand for things to be as you want while making everyone suffer for not doing as you demand. When you add in the concept of omniscience to the mix, it means all events are intended and planned, which means all of the suffering is what he wills. He's gaslighting people, tormenting them if he is omniscient. All of this while demanding to be worshipped. It's demonic. A messiah is prophesized. Yeshua does not fit the prophecies properly, but he is still seen as one. Messiah meaning a leader, and in this case it is one that was meant to lead people towards a new kingdom of god upon Earth. "If there was no free will, we wouldn't be what we are today. We wouldn't have wifi, we wouldn't have clothes and make it stylish, we wouldn't have ART just like from the ancient history. I can think much more of the reasons why if you wanna know. " What you're describing is not reliant on free will. You're also now arguing about "free will" from contemporary life perspective, when my argument has been about the concept of omniscience. Your argument is unrelated to it. Either way, this is not free will what you're describing. Free will would be the ability to make choices and decisions without the influence nor control of any forces, and this is not possible for humans brains. Even if we were to change how brains function, the entire environment, the cosmos around us still influences and determines numerous aspects and factors of our lives. Free will does not exist from any philosophical point of view, especially not omniscience as from that perspective all is already known. You cannot go against what omniscience knows as otherwise it is not omniscience. "It is our "narcissistic" trait that constantly mock God and blame every faults we have done as humans. That we'd think He didn't "solve" any of the humans' problems. We suffered because we gained the "knowledge of good and evil." That's why Nyx said "The moment the man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate."" I will blame God for what he is described to have done. I don't see a reason to defend the genocides he has caused. If he is omnipotent and omniscient, he is at fault for all. I'm only describing things as they are told. You're right now claiming that the person who decides how everything works did not decide how everything works. You're claiming an all-knowing being who is also all-powerful does not know how Adam thinks and will act, despite being the one who decides how everything thinks and acts. If he does not, he isn't all powerful and all knowing. You're claiming one who is wise did not know what planting a tree of knowledge would lead to, despite being the one who designed how all factors involved in it work. Are you saying God is brain damaged and thus cannot use his aspects? Are you saying Azathoth is God? Either God is mentally disabled, or he isn't as described. "It may sound narcissistic to you, but I assure that it's truly not. Not when we know He is God and has the power above everything. " Congrats, you just admitted he is narcissistic. "If you already know about the "tradition" of making a sacrificial lamb back in the Old testament, and from the book of Exodus, Leviticus, and so on, you get the symbol of Jesus here." Ah yes, demanding blood sacrifices. How very not demonic at all... What sort of a divine being would decide for sacrifices to be a needed system, when they have power over everything and could choose for it to not be so? It's almost like they want blood sacrifices...

I was thinking the thumbnail was just coincidentally phallic.. but nope! Lmao
Good introduction
I wish I could weaponise my own Mara. Would've been more fitting to upload this own Valentine's Day
LOL I didn't even think of making Mara the Valentine's day special. Oh well, he's still fitting for October
What's the OST from the start of video's name?
Would have been really cool to see Mara as a optional boss, or mini boss in digital devil saga 2. After his mount wrecks town.
Her*
I did a play once in school where I played the role of Siddhartha, and damn I never knew the lore for this man went so deep or that he conflicted with Mara. This really made me appreciate that experience and the lessons the video and play taught me.
Thanks Tony for your educational and fantastically entertaining work!
Really appreciate it! I always aim to help people learn, even if people just want to learn about a funny phallic demon, they walk away with deeper understanding of world religion
Mara s the one keeping the wheel of life moving... via actions guided by feelings like lust, we keep Mara within
oh wow, this video have a impressive length.
😳Why thank you
Enlightening.
I expected "Tony for way too many genital jokes" but i guess you had to resist making that joke in the intro due to youtube being youtube.
Of course i know what Mara is, i have one since i was born
Tony didn’t actually care about making a Halloween Video, he just secretly wanted to talk about his new hyper-obsession, Aka Buddhist Teachings.
I'll take any chance I can get to talk about Buddhism lol
Thanks for this great video! Could a video about Mara, Maruo, and the Maruology cult from SMT IV: Apocalypse be coming in the future? Maruo might be the single funniest thing in SMT. Maruo! Maruo! Maruo! 😆
I saw and communicated with this being when I vaped DMT. They are a very advanced and superior beings than human. Their clothing were so intricate and beautiful.
From my experience in fgo, I think mara is a corrupted version of kama, the Hindu god of love who was "erased" by shiva
Ngl mara really sounds like the demiurge and buddha really sounds like a gnostic who achieved gnosis, I guess everyone reached a similar conclusion but with different ways of seeing it, 1+1 is 2 after all
Just got this persona/demon today 😂
Tempting and ruling with that capital D
Many world religions have parallels to each other and Gnosticism is no exception.
We suffered because we gained the "knowledge of good and evil." That's why Nyx said "The moment the man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate."
It may sound narcissistic to you, but I assure that it's truly not.
What you're describing is not reliant on free will.
We suffered because we gained the "knowledge of good and evil." That's why Nyx said "The moment the man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate.""
I will blame God for what he is described to have done.
Congrats, you just admitted he is narcissistic.
"If you already know about the "tradition" of making a sacrificial lamb back in the Old testament, and from the book of Exodus, Leviticus, and so on, you get the symbol of Jesus here."
Ah yes, demanding blood sacrifices. How very not demonic at all... What sort of a divine being would decide for sacrifices to be a needed system, when they have power over everything and could choose for it to not be so? It's almost like they want blood sacrifices...
I really want to have Mara's personality because it's really big, if you catch my drift.
What are the calming songs playing in your videoss
Come to think of it, although not from Sanskrit as far as I know, the Malay word for sadness is also "duka". Weird coincidence?
Buddhism is so cool. I wish Samsara was escapable inshallah
It's cool, but it has some really crazy hells if you look into it. Also very negative towards women in some aspects.
Good. I'm not a woman.
Take the mara out of your life playa
"Buddhism…Inshallah" 🤨
We accumulate our Jnana and ascend to Nirvana Inshallah
Song name at 3:08?
Tony, do Lore on Балашиха and Железнодорожный. 🤣
When I read in the 1st Nikaya book I did not understand why the king of heavens forced Siddhartha into Nirbana(Sankrit Nirvana), then realise that's god was Mara😂 (in Buddhism Demon or Devil very clear not king of heavens or appear in heavens realms).
Damn Buddhism goes hard.
Way harder than people believe, it's such an iceberg
Great game 💯👌👍
“Full of country goodness and green peaness.”
You what would be awesome a new version of mara that isn't a joke character and have all the other versions of him be false versions of him but we all know that will never happen and will just get Lucifer again and not Mara or someone different.
Mara and his elephant are one eyed monsters
I met mara. It's has 6 eyes, and is a total cry baby. And threatened to kill me after I shot it in the face with a dart.
The first time a saw SMT's Mara I misread it as Maria/ Mary and thought: "the Japanese must really really really not like Christianity"
There's a demon in our pants 😳
Is this Honkai star rail aeon are based on this that make completely sense
According to Buddha's Dharma, "Mara" is never a demon, He is the God with the highest bliss and power of all God-Kings.
It claims to be the devil. 6 eye beast.
IMU Sama in Onepiece Story
Trey the explainer vibes
I wish my pp had a chariot to ride around on
Hey i have an idea
Why not make a video on The Angels in Islam
So not only does Mara look like, well, that, but it's also riding a one-eyed monster? Seriously? Did Buddhism need more than one joke at the expense of men named Richard?
💯
