Hello, Hugo. Thanks for sharing this amazing piece, really enjoyed and learnt a lot watching it. I had a question regarding the extreme white nuke effect/lighting that you designed for the elements when the boom happens 39:38, I fail to see what goes around making this effect, can you elaborate please? thanks
I'm aware it's a node-based compositional tool, but exactly what Nuke is, I've never understood. *(I'm probably angering people by saying this)* but it seems like it's comparable to After Effects, though more catered towards high-end VFX? Its ocean of possibilities seems vast and deep!
You are right it is node based. Whereas AE is layer based. Node based is far more powerful in visual effects. It allows multiple iterations and changes to the composite throughout the shot. It is much more difficult to produce feature film vfx in a layer based system such as After Effects.
Hi Hugo thanks for your effort you put in to teach us nuke ;) i have a question can u recommend a hardware upgrade for nuke i use i7 6700K and 16GB RAM , 970Pro M.2 with intel integrated GPU 530HD however i"m doing some personnel projects i notice some lag in viewport even tho im using EXR Files and my task manager says im using 10GB RAM do u think i should get rtx 2070 or upgrade CPU
Hugo amazing work as usual, one of the few and rare professional vfx channels out there, thank you !And btw how did you animate the grass footage, is it some sort of a displacement effect in nuke?
Thanks so much for the support. I wish there where more professional channels but I guess people are too busy. I split my time 50/50 so I can also share my workflows. Regarding the trees yes I used a displacement gizmo but the idistort would work as well. Thanks again for watching
Awesome, man!!! But I watch "You just have to be better at using geometry to mask elements and particles" whilst. -)) I hope I'll watch this tutorial in next month -) I have a question. What online course from Nuke do you recommend for beginners/middle Nuke users?

Please Answer My Question . I am learning Fusion at school and i will graduate soon , so my question is will Fusion be an obstacle for my in the VFX industry. Which tutorial do you recommend for beginners to learn Nuke beside yours.
Well, I would say that Fusion is not industry standers at all. Nuke is dominating all VFX houses. Having said that, it should be possible to transfer your knowledge from Fusion to Nuke since they are both Node Based applications. Regarding tutorials, maybe try my Kickstart course? I'm a junior compositor who works in a film VFX house for less then half year. I'm also a new subscriber to your channel, I love your contents so much! Currently I want to up my game in compositing but I just don't know how to be better in it. The most confusing part in compositing is that I don't know what should I include in my scene... I wonder if it's possible for you to create a video to briefly describle what are the important things that we should take care of / look for before woking on it. For example, If I'm working on a CG compositing shot, the fist thing I need to do is check the black & white points, color, motion blur...etc. What about keying...etc. I hope my question makes sense, it doesn't have to be really in depth about every value/skill. Maybe breifly naming important terms like black & white points, denoise, brightness of the OG footage...etc. Thanks again for the awesome videos !
Thanks so much for the sub and the kind words. Well, as a matter of fact, I have created a full Nuke course on Kickstarter. It's a 15-week course and we are on week 5 at the moment. On this course, we go over everything n Nuke and compositing. Have a look at the details: www.kickstarter.com/projects/hugosdesk/hugos-desk-presents-the-complete-nuke-compositing
Oh man this is a lot of work This is surprisingly very enjoyable to watch in fast forward, it's almost like your machine is on autopilot ahah Jokes aside, this is amazing and the first time i see something like this on youtube. So thanks alot for sharing that. I just have one question if you don't mind: I may be wrong, but I beleive you received the matte painting with all the elements already prepared. Is it usually like this for this kind of shot or sometimes you only have a reference and do it yourself ? Cheers
I personally prefer a workstation. I currently use Mac Pros and at The Mill we used Z HP workstations. Laptops are just not powerful enough for the bandwidth we need in VFX and editorial.
I’m not sure what I’m watching tbh. Are these all 2D images composited in Nuke to a camera movement? What exactly is the advantage of not doing this in 3D? Time it takes for realistic texturing/shading and to render? Is the sheer scale too large? Or are there underlying restrictions based on either client or technical preference? I’m looking at this with very minimal knowledge of both the actual content and overlying concepts, let alone any sort of low-level technical understanding. I’m coming from a photography->digital art->3D background so this looks like animated Photoshop more than 3D. I guess it could just be somewhere down a pipeline i’ve never needed nor was able to venture. Any insight to the billion questions would be appreciated. Loved watching it nonetheless.
Thanks so much for watching. It is a complicated question. We did it using matte painting for 2 reasons. First to have a more stylised and game look to the shot and second making this in CG would be so much more expensive. It would require weeks of modelling, layout, rendering and lighting. And with clients we would have spent the entire time re rendering the shot. In this project the cheapest option was a meet painting. Thanks again
Hmm I think the camera movement kills it. It makes it really obvious that these objects are just 2d cutouts, to me at least. I tried to look at some ref to compare but didn't really find similar stuff that would have such sharp shadows. Most of the footage is pretty bad, but seems like generally everything gets brighter and just dims. At a later point your image has heat distortion and looks a bit color burnt (maybe that was a client request) that part seems like too much. Still, the setup is impressive. I heard good stuff about nuke.
Thanks so much for watching but not really looking for feedback. This was a real project with real clients and real deadlines (only 2 weeks from concept, to filming to deliver and broadcast for the entire trailer with 1 min) so we did what we could. It was also not meant to be photo-real or realistic. It is a stylistic trailer. Yes Nuke is very good.
@@HugosDesk Well I believe feedback can always be good, even for future projects, but I know what it's like working with tight deadlines! Also did you flash the wheat while filming or was it done in comp too? I can't quite tell from the recording
Sorry but after working 20 years in the industry I do not welcome feedback anymore. There is always too much of it! The flash was filled for real in camera yes. The camera is also a real camera move done Onset.
Do you think its possible to do something like this on after effect? I have a hard time with the camera movement so i use fixed props and the perspective is always weird
@@HugosDesk yeah sorry, i mean about 2d texture in 3d world, why you don't made a full 3d project, it is for pleasur or for technical achievement ? for
We did not do it in full 3D because we only had 2 weeks from the shoot onset until delivery. We would not manage to make a shot like this in full 3D in just 2 weeks. Also, it is much cheaper in 2D and the budget was not very big.
Sorry, but I can't do that since this was captured in timelapse. I could not capture weeks of work, it would have been to much capture. You can slow down the playback on UA-cam if it helps.
@@HugosDesk Keep us posted. While your nuke class would be kinda overkill for me as I just can't afford to pay over 1000$ right now, I would be interested in good conforming/project management class if it would be cheaper and not as long.
Well, I can understand you may think $1000 is a lot but I can guarantee my course is unique. We have 3 teachers with decades of experience in Dneg, Mill, ILM, MPC, among others and all plates and footage on the course are from real productions, include you can use some of them on your reel.
There is a Patreon link on the UA-cam page and one on the video it self on the top right corner. But here it is also: www.patreon.com/hugosdesk thanks so much for watching.
Well, this is not a competition. Faster does not mean better. Delivering high-quality shots in a VFX environment is not a matter of speed, it is a matter of attention to detail and making sure you have the flexibility of making last-minute changes without restarting your shot. Let's me explain why I did this shot in Nuke, if you allow me! I used Nuke because it is my tool of choice, it is the industry standard for VFX and the best way of compositing in a professional pipeline with multiple artists. Could I have done this comp in After Effects? Sure I could! But could I have done it fully integrated into a pipeline that allows 3 other artists to share assets and also open the same shot at the same time? Could I have done this shot in 4K HDR in the 32-bit float and still playback? Could I have 3D tracked the footage and use a proper lens distortion pipeline? Could I have done a proper industry standard grain management pipeline? Could I have seamlessly shared assets in and out of Maya for the projection mapping? Could I have done all of this using ACES color science and deliver a professional EXR to a colorist with all the dynamic range still intact? Could I have had a flexible script using nodes so I could easily make last-minute changes from clients? The list goes on and on... I wouldn't have been able to use After Effects for any of the above, and I tell you this from experience. I have been a compositor for 20 years, 10 of which using After Effects before I moved to Fusion, Shake and now Nuke. I moved because I reached After Effects limitations. A node-based application is the best way to compositing Visual Effects. Anyway, thank you so muhc for watching

Really appreciate all the support on the video but I have to say, it’s bizarre that I have 6 dislikes. Really? You dislike that I am sharing production ready techniques in Nuke for free??? Really? This is a real project for Ubisoft. You don’t even see this stuff on UA-cam. This is not some “test” or “concept” shot am making, it’s the actual comp from the trailer released for Far Cry. How can someone dislike this??? Some people are weird.
@@HugosDesk Possibly gaming kiddos looking for more info on the game and getting frustrated with the inability to comprehend what this video is in the first place. That'd be my take.
And this shows again, that compositing would be sooo much faster and therefore cheaper, if the techs shooting the plates would know (or care about) how to use and light a green screen correctly. Blue gaffer? equipment in shot *behind* the thing you want to isolate? So much time lost to correct other people's mistakes... But great work nonetheless. The dislikes are probably coming from people that expect at least in-engine (if not in-game) footage if you announce a game.
It was recorded as a time lapse so I don't have everything. I can't really capture 2 weeks of screen capture. You can change the speed in UA-cam to 0.25x if it helps. Thanks.
Well i captured it at that speed so I can’t slow it down. This is just to have a general idea of how we approach a shot like this and to see the versions and feedback. A full deconstruction will be published later this month as requested and voted by my Patreons supporters. Thanks
Do you think hugo that is fare that someone spend one hour watching this video without explaining what you are doing like this we can't learn from you bro
This is just a time lapse video to give you a general idea of our approach to a shot like this and also so you can see all the versions and changes from client along the way. A full deconstruction video was voted by my Patreons and will be published later in the month. I also asked my Patreons if they wanted to see something like this and they responded in a very positive way since it is not very common for you to see this much detail online. I would advise you one thing, It would be helpful for you to be a bit more positive, I publish these videos for free. Like I mention before a full “deconstruction” series will be made of this VFX shot as voted and requested by my Patreon Supporters. Have a great day.
Well they should not be compared. Nuke is the industry standard for VFX. Its used by every VFX house in the world to make the biggest movies and blockbusters. They are not used for the same stuff. Nuke is mostly used in a full VFX pipeline together with Houdini and Maya, it’s used for Aces and Deep compositing. After Effects can’t really work in a pipeline so they are really not the same at all.

Lot of time is wasted on keying. Just few pictures would have been enough to do it in 3d. Why bother shooting. At the end it sure helped to sell the shot but still 🤷
There is no way we could have done photo real CG characters in 4K in 2016 with the budget we had. It was so much cheaper to film and do keying. Maybe today, 6 years later I would have done it in 3D but not back then. This project was very low budget. Also the entire project is in live action so we couldn’t do all the shots in CG!

Amazing
Hi Hugo thanks for your effort you put in to teach us nuke ;)
i have a question can u recommend a hardware upgrade for nuke i use i7 6700K and 16GB RAM , 970Pro M.2 with intel integrated GPU 530HD
however i"m doing some personnel projects i notice some lag in viewport even tho im using EXR Files and my task manager says im using 10GB RAM do u think i should get rtx 2070 or upgrade CPU
Thanks again for watching
pleeeaase do a deconstruct version !!!
Yes, that is my next video series. As voted by my patrons.
Stunning! I watched to the end. How is it possible to keep orienation in so much nodes :O Your nodetree must have filled square kilometers :o
Haha, thanks so much for watching! I guess I am so used to this now that I don't even notice that it's big!
Awesome, man!!! But I watch "You just have to be better at using geometry to mask elements and particles" whilst. -)) I hope I'll watch this tutorial in next month -) I have a question. What online course from Nuke do you recommend for beginners/middle Nuke users?
Thanks, I would recommend my own Nuke Course I did on Kickstarter. We are on week 5 now but you can still join I you want. Interested?
@@HugosDesk Do you mean this course? www.kickstarter.com/projects/hugosdesk/hugos-desk-presents-the-complete-nuke-compositing?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=Nuke%20Course
You can still join, we are only on week 5 of 15. www.kickstarter.com/projects/hugosdesk/hugos-desk-presents-the-complete-nuke-compositing

That is ok, I will keep posting free videos too. Thanks
What software do you use at 3:12? It could simplify my VFX workflow in 3D software.
That is the software from the Phantom high speed camera.
@@HugosDesk Thanks, mate. :)
Oh man this is a lot of work
This is surprisingly very enjoyable to watch in fast forward, it's almost like your machine is on autopilot ahah
Jokes aside, this is amazing and the first time i see something like this on youtube. So thanks alot for sharing that.
I just have one question if you don't mind:
I may be wrong, but I beleive you received the matte painting with all the elements already prepared. Is it usually like this for this kind of shot or sometimes you only have a reference and do it yourself ?
Cheers
good work .
send me footage link Bro
Man! after seen this I think it would have been easier to do those front bushes in 3d ;)
Well we only had 2 weeks from shoot to deliver so no time for full 3D

best channel i subscribe you
Very nice, if not particularly cheerful.
What???
What tool do you preefeer, a powerful laptop, or built pc for Compositor and Supervisor
I personally prefer a workstation. I currently use Mac Pros and at The Mill we used Z HP workstations. Laptops are just not powerful enough for the bandwidth we need in VFX and editorial.
Just wow
Hi Hugo , what factors to I have to check for just after I comp my cg into live plate ?? I am more on the 2d side so not aware of this.
Man, how many years did you master your skills ?
Been working in VFX for 20 years and 15 of those with Nuke
Professional stuff!
Strange that you dont use 3d to apply the effect after the shot...! very amazing and very very long work you so sick !!^^
Thanks so much. What do you mean 3D?
@@HugosDesk yeah sorry, i mean about 2d texture in 3d world, why you don't made a full 3d project, it is for pleasur or for technical achievement ? for
We did not do it in full 3D because we only had 2 weeks from the shoot onset until delivery. We would not manage to make a shot like this in full 3D in just 2 weeks. Also, it is much cheaper in 2D and the budget was not very big.
@@HugosDesk understand, it is amazing very powerfull, same like 3d, with 2d it is very nice and the render, but very big work ;), see ya buddy..

It will be to beginning to advance?
Yes, it is an intense 15 weeks course from scratch.
Great work, but you could do it three times faster and easier in AE)

Haha, well it's 7 now. My personal record. Never had so many dislikes on a video, lol
@@HugosDesk Possibly gaming kiddos looking for more info on the game and getting frustrated with the inability to comprehend what this video is in the first place. That'd be my take.
Dont think about it to much - way to many dislike bots on youtube - and yes I did not make that up^^ Keep up the good work! And thank you so much :)
Thank you so much!
you are awesome!
(except you were there as vfx sup.... then... maybe take more care next time? :D )
为什么不发布正常速度的……大佬
It was recorded as a time lapse so I don't have everything. I can't really capture 2 weeks of screen capture. You can change the speed in UA-cam to 0.25x if it helps. Thanks.
1h is just too fast 3 or more hours probably work better for speed Comp to extract something useful from it
Well i captured it at that speed so I can’t slow it down. This is just to have a general idea of how we approach a shot like this and to see the versions and feedback. A full deconstruction will be published later this month as requested and voted by my Patreons supporters. Thanks
You can lower the playback speed on UA-cam videos so you can watch it much slower.

A full deconstruction video was voted by my Patreons and will be published later in the month. I also asked my Patreons if they wanted to see something like this and they responded in a very positive way since it is not very common for you to see this much detail online. After Effects is better .
Hugo's Desk will be live on Twitch tomorrow Sunday, 17th March from 15.00 GMT. This will part Two of a CG compositing Nuke workshop using a real production shot. Hope to see you there.
