I so love this movie...seen it five times already and still discover new things. Such an experience. Why can’t vfx design and cgi always be on this level. Mindblowing.
you are correct.. simplicity isnt easy.. but this film was stunning in its colors and design.. the fact that it flopped financially makes me happy since it means mainstream does not understand the awesomeness of what Blade Runner truly means.. Great work to all the artist ♥
PacTheOne Financial failure means you are *LESS* likely to see films along these lines in the future because studios won't take the risk. That shouldn't make you happy.
Well yes but actually no When the art director says he wants a city in fog, he doesn’t just want a city in fog, but actually a CITY in fog. In vfx, when something occludes something else, you don’t think "no one will see it anyway" because you don’t know that you see it’s missing. There’s so many details the human eye is trained to distinguish since birth that the MOMENT something isn’t right, you can’t really tell why, but it feels OFF. Since everything 3D is pretty much using raytracing, every reflection, refraction, shadow and ambient occlusion makes any object have an impact on the final result.
Once I heard that a sound designer had to create the sound of an eye blinking, which in real life doesn't make any sound at all. But when I met a sound designer he said that "if the sound is there, the viewer won't notice it. However if the sound isn't there, the viewer will notice it's not." I think it's a similar case in vfx. They created a detailed city covered in fog so the audience notices it only subconsciously, had it not been there, it would've looked noticeably poor. Good thing they won an oscar though lol
If you notice in later shots, different parts of it are used. So basically, they created the city itself, and then were able to position the locations of the shots/fog later
If it loses to Planet of the Apes or SW, I'm going to lose my freaking mind. It will be the biggest example of money talking rather than who deserves it winning.
Why would be winning the oscar for best vfx???? dude, are you serious? there are hundreds of movies with better fx... hahahaha. You guys are unbelievable :p, most of you really need to watch more sci fic movies, for real.
BR 2049 has, objectively, better VFX than almost any film released. That is objective. There have been numerous articles written on how intricate the FX work was on the Joi/K love scene with the other replicant and all of the incredible work that was done with practical FX as well as the ridiculously well done scene with Rachel. Hundreds of movies with better FX? I dare you to name 3. There is a reason BR 2049 won both Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography at the academy awards, and it is because it has some of the best visuals of any film ever made. To say anything less just goes to show either personal bias, or genuine lack of understanding on what makes amazing visuals.
How they did it over a budget of 150 millions blows my mind. A part of me also believes that many VFX artists agreed to be paid less to achieve this immaculate masterpiece.
Thats a complete lie. So you know. There are no fx in this movie worthy of that much lol. I mean, there are not even fx worthy of 1 million. People just believe everything they read / hear. Also fx in this movie are not better than 90% of the science fiction movies from today. Again, people nowadays is completely blind, unfortunately.
except with the majority of science fiction movies these days, the effects are very in your face and don't actually seem connected with the real characters and environments around them. just because a movie like Guardians of the Galaxy or Transformers has a bunch of big, flashy cgi action fests doesn't make it any good. movies like Blade Runner merge the effects with the real characters almost seamlessly, and never in a way where they're trying to show it off. especially in certain scenes with the hologram girl, it looks impressive and weird, but never out of place or cgi'd.
Very impressive work, stunning film, and I also have to say congrats to the people who broke down assets, animated cameras trough them, and edited this demo reel, because that's a lot of work that can easily go unnoticed.
This movie brought wonder back to VFX. Even in today's age of "they can do it all with computers", so many of the scenes with Joi had me asking "how did they DO that!"

Some if not the best visual effects of any film to date. Also what an awesome blend of the soundtrack playing in the background. What is the name of the song that begins with the video starting.
People seem to be complaining about the city being covered in dust or fog. The point is you need that detail for any little bit that does show. You don't just want boxes and angles. It actually makes sense to have the detail because without it, it would look cheesy. Great effects and great ideas! Very inspirational for those that appreciate what's going on.
05:30 in the cinema actually felt like the only 'fake' scene. I got the impression a camera was panning through a miniature landscape, probably because I didn't have a frame of reference, such as a human running away from the ship.

I know they must pay you guys a lot of money to say nonsense in here but some of you should really think before you write/talk hahaha.
George R OK. Let's calm down a smidge. First off, you didn't like the movie, couldn't find one thing in that 3hrs that you did like and that's okay. I might have fan boyed a little hard earlier, watching all the amazing work being displayed here and was just excited to be back in that world again. Lastly, I'm still excited nonetheless to watch this on whatever medium it happens to be on, DVD/Blu-ray/VHS/media- streaming or Torrent.
George R why are you angrily replying to like every person in the comments? what weird vendetta do you have against this movie? get a hobby, dude.
dude i said George R, as in i was replying to George who replied to you.
9:45 I actually thought the car was really flying in that scene - now I'm a bit disappointed x'''D
Me too, I thought it was connected to wires to make it look like it was flying
the 3D modelers were like "what the fog!?"
Holy shit, I hope the VFX artists was well paid, cause they work was brilliant, the modeling, textures, matte compositions... Damn
Beautiful, absolute masterpiece
So good. Best of 2017 for me. Thank you...
amazing film with flawless effects
they did an outstanding work because at the end the magic of the movie is working
Some if not the best visual effects of any film to date. Also what an awesome blend of the soundtrack playing in the background. What is the name of the song that begins with the video starting.
Time will be kind to this film...kudos to all involved
Just gorgeous. Can we get a sound effects breakdown??
cant wait for this movie to become old and iconic, just like the first one.
It's already been forgotten
Very well done video... and instructive.
I would love to just fly around and explore the Las Vegas and Los Angeles city models.
I hope this wins best visual effects!
The music makes me feel at home;
Absolutely best movie i have seen in my life!
iplaybose same here. 2 years later and I’m still looking up everything about it.
05:30 in the cinema actually felt like the only 'fake' scene. I got the impression a camera was panning through a miniature landscape, probably because I didn't have a frame of reference, such as a human running away from the ship.
this movie is a feast on the senses
Came here for the VFX breakdown. Stayed because of the VFX breakdown AND the music.
