Not for nothing. In 45years. We always bolted the clutch to the engine and then put in the transmission. At least in a big truck. The other way might work in a car. But I never did that myself. Good Luck with Crystal. Stay Safe out There. ! 🇺🇸✅️😊
..JP, U may know that in today's cars they lift/drop the engine easy, by having a 4 hole plate attached to the crank, they have/keep everything else in the bell housing with a window at the bottom to access/screw the flywheel/converter against the plate. The engine NO sparks, turns easy. They also remove the harmonic balancer pulley to ease the lift. Truck, is different and U have longitudinal space.
It does seem to rain when you do transmissions, lol. I've found everyone has their own way of doing things. As long as it ends correctly, to each their own lol. Great job, Mr. Pretty!
I agree with you James, as long as you have got a dummy shaft to line up the clutch plates before you tighten the clutch, then the gearbox should slide right in. Always go with your gut instinct
Awesome video James👍👍👍 I’ve never heard of that myself putting a clutch in to the transmission instead of putting the transmission in through the flywheel and then putting the transmission back in. Good job.
Hi James I don’t know why some folks do things the way they do. The way you usually put a transmission in seems to make more sense to me. To have clutch already in the bell housing seems counter productive. Because then you’ve got to bar the engine over by hand. A big engine like that Cat that alone would be work. But you’ve got her done now. Stay safe
Interesting theory of clutch installation. Perhaps ot works on a modern bell housing. But ive always done it the way you do. Except i use a cherry picker to lift the flywheel and clutch.
James old buddy we always put the clutch on the engine first your doing right I bet there more people puts the in our way than there way keep up the good work
James, keep up the good work and the way you are doing things, keep us old dudes happy lol,no old iron destruction, cutting them up and beating the Shxt out of them for humor, keep doing what your doing, you’re about the only one that kept the goal, keep old iron alive,my opinion, the rest has gone to crap, but a couple are still good, peterbuilt Mike, twin sticks, team steam etc, appreciate you James 👍🏾
I've always put the clutch on the engine first, But I've been told by alot of old timers to build it on the trans, but I think the difference is the intermediate plate & other disk were not riveted together on the ones they did, or they didn't have a line up shaft. Can't really say, but I always did it the way I knew & they always worked.
@JamesPretty It may be easier to do it that way on X without access directly to the transmission. I've only done like Top kick & S-line International on conventional trucks & they both had removable tunnels over the trans & used a cherry picker to hold the trans after I got it up.
Just got enough wifi at Orlando airport to watch video, and it was worth the wait , man that truck is going to be nice , on way back to Canada 🇨🇦 today !!
Great video James glad to see you getting the transmission and clutch in Krystal. Glad to see Krystal coming together a few more adjustments to fit the part's that make Krystal work. Looking forward to your next video stay safe James and Jessica.
Hi James from Yorkshire England I'm with you I have always put the clutch onto the fly wheel first then the gear box so you can make sure all the clutch bolt are all tight 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I guess that the advantages of working on a cab over is being able to use your FLT to fit the transmission from the top and fitting the clutch the normal way.if you was working from underneath using a transmission jack Waynes way would be better. Nice to see Crystal slowly coming together mate.
That is how we do it at my shop we mount the new clutch to the trans and then once the bell housing bolts are torqued we go back thru the inspection plate and tighten the clutch bolts one by one. Kinda a pain in the ass with the little window but it works. Seems like when you mount the clutch to motor first then try and stab the trans you can sometimes run into more issues and it'll take longer. We do have the special engine barring tools though (although never done a clutch replacement on a cat)
Yeah, you do what you know works, but never hurts to try a different method once! Super excited to see engine and trans in krystal! Doing a great job James!!
I learned cars and big trucks Clutch bolted up then gear box., but when you do an automatic Torque converter on trans Spin around and bolt to flex plate. My boss does does big trucks same way. Makes sense if you don’t have pilot tool. Or clutch Jack. Comes down to what ever works for you.
Yes ....have always put the clutch assembly in first then the gearbox... proper way to do it in my opinion....as you said on the video it would have been done a lot more quickly..
Good job putting the transmission in the truck i thank putting the clutch in your way is better Brother keep up The hard work on the trucks safe travels on the airplane captain
Really good show brother you certainly got a lot accomplished here I enjoyed the video I always look forward to your up coming videos. Cheers brother ❤ good job
I think Whitney would make a beautiful show truck, she has good bones,I can picture her, fixed up on a RGN behind Crystal etc going to truck shows,I can see Dana Scott checking out Whitney lol👍🏾

Need to sell some trucks for profit then invest one of best truck as restoration stuffs and painting in the eveything A to Z. I BET on more viewers will come and you will make more money from UA-cam. Look example of UA-cam: DGHD, Mike the truck nut (talking too much) , Gently and Sons trucking, Twins stick garage, Bruce Wilson, and Fly weld fab.. Etc.. Did you notice how many viewers they got..? Key is restored as focused on each the trucks.. Study them and how they pulled many viewers and add subscribers in their UA-cam. Try that.. Not advice but just dip let you know.. New idea something new ways... I used watching your UA-cam for year.
James don't pay attention to negative comments. You have brought these trucks back to life. Your doing an outstanding job!!!!!!!
thanks James
What you know works for you works for you. I wouldn’t change it either. Apparently you had to pull that crap back apart and do it your way.👍👍👍
Right on yep it was frustrating. but at least its done now
Not for nothing. In 45years. We always bolted the clutch to the engine and then put in the transmission. At least in a big truck. The other way might work in a car. But I never did that myself. Good Luck with Crystal. Stay Safe out There. ! 🇺🇸✅️😊

I can't speak for Cat or Cummins but, I worked on Mack's for years and the clutch always goes on the engine first, your correct in my book JP
thanks ben
It does seem to rain when you do transmissions, lol. I've found everyone has their own way of doing things. As long as it ends correctly, to each their own lol. Great job, Mr. Pretty!
Very true! Thx Rick
Always good to see progress on these beautiful machines. Kudos to you James doing what your doing.

It mightn't be what is said in the shop manual, but it's your way, and it works for you.
Thx bro

Another big step MrP 😀 I’ve done clutches both ways but prefer bolting up to flywheel. Not long now until the wheels are rolling👍🏻
Thx John

I dig the wrenching especially bring these beauty’s back and as long as the end result works for you I wouldn’t change your method of doing clutches
