I've driven A LOT of engine/transmission combinations that have been put in heavy commercial trucks over the last 40 years and the 3406 mechanical with either a 13 or 18 speed are THE MOST POWERFUL trucks I even had the pleasure to drive. If given the option, I would take a Cat 3406 engine from 1987 over a brand new X15 605 Cummins in a heartbeat, hands down, no question!

i totally agree with all of that. simple is reliable...todays engines are so sensitive. they can have catastrophic failures for the smallest problem

Last year I dropped an 3406-B into my 06 T600,bought the truck new in 07 with the C 15 Acert, ran the thing for 1.5 million miles before it literally BLEW UP,CAT wanted 30 for an exchange reman.Had an old 93 3406-B at the house, so my 85 yo father and myself re-did the old bitch ,plugged it in and I cant be more happier! ...........Got the memories from back in the day!.........Hammer down and keep the shiny side up.

Great idea to change the fuel filter and not use the nasty old fuel.

thanks eric. that fuel was horrible smelling! im not sure if it was just getting algae build up or if someone added some "concoction" like atf and fuel additive to the tanks. it was bad!

Kenworths with Cats are a match made in Heaven. I drive a t401 with a c12 in Australia. It's got 1.4 million km on it or 870,000 miles without having an in chassis done to it yet, still running great. Mind you that's mostly local work too, don't get to do much highway stuff. Out pulls a lot of the newer Euro stuff too on the hills fully loaded with at least a 100hp deficit. You've got a new subscriber here, I'll be following this project for sure.

No DEF, No EGR, No E-logs, what's not to like? It makes sense to put that old truck back on the road. I live in Virginia and I know a guy with a farm out in the Blue Ridge Mountains who pulled an old R model Mack around the same age out of a barn. It's going back to work for next year's harvest. With all the things I mentioned and the price of new trucks today, it makes sense sometimes.

That smooth runnin 4 and a quarter kitty cat is worth at least 10k on its own, you didn’t go wrong buying those 3 trucks even if they end up being part outs, but of course you knew that going in, that’s what makes you the master!

They were $39.95 at the big box stores back then and did the job as well as the $150-200 ones from the tool truck. Probably the best bang for the buck of any air tool I ever bought.

Nothing like the sounds of a cranky CAT waking up. B motors are one of my favorites. Drove an 85 peterbilt 359 with one that was supposed to be 425 but the pump was turned up all the way. Once the third battery was put in it started up in any cold weather. The company would buy new trucks and they couldn't pull me out of that, this was in the early 2000s 2010, I would have bought that truck if it wasn't for Dam emissions in California ( F U CA)

If you're doing a bunch of old starts, consider a pump sprayer for your fuel tank. We just take the sprayer valve off, have some adapters to go to the fuel line. Fill the pump pot with diesel, pump it up until fuel comes out the return and once it fires open the vent on the pot. Small supply, but there's usually enough reserve in the filters for a decent run out

Nothing beats the sound of a good old American made mechanical injected diesel! Be sure to check the nut filter before you hook up the intake!

I had an old W900 with a 3406B. It would run no matter what as long as there was fuel. Pre-emissions, no DEF. all mechanical, that truck could run another 500,000 miles easy with a little maintenance. Trucks like that are worth money these days. You can’t get that kind of life out of newer ones with all the emissions stuff. I’ll bet cleaned up, a new paint job, that truck would sell for over $50k.

I really enjoy your channel. The way you walk us viewers through what you are doing and why is very informative. If I could make a suggestion have you looked into chest rigs or head mounted rigs for filming. Not only would it give you the use of two hands it would give the viewer a different/better show. Not trying to put you down or anything just a suggestion. Thanks again for the videos I have learned a lot!

Your videos seem to be always what I am looking for. Your W900 from the past is the same as my dump truck and now the T600 is the same as mine and it has sat for a while. I have always wondered why Diesel engines don't have a metal plate that with too much air suction would swing shut to stop a runaway. Keep them coming.
