I'm a veteran solo player, I've been playing since launch of the game and I agree. But I also don't. The real good advice wouldn't be to never lower the anchor. The most important thing in Sea of Thieves is to ALWAYS check on the horizon for ennemy ships, pay attention to sounds (swimming, climbing ladder, keg ignition) and to ALWAYS be on your guard. I lower the anchor 50% of the time I get to an island, cuz' I'm too lazy and guess what : because I am aware of my suroundings, I never get surprised or sunk. Well, not never, but, very rarely ! It's Sea of Thieves after all ! Happy sailing to all !

If you just raise sail while on approach you don't have to even wait for the ship to come to a stop, sword lunge to the island and let the boat drift the rest of the way. Raising the anchor takes just about the same amount of time as raising the anchor except if you just anchor, before you raise anchor if the ship is pointed at the island you have to raise the sails first anyways then anchor. Laziness just doesn't make sense it's more work to use the anchor
New players remember, when doing a fof always anchor your ship facing the island so you can harpoon the loot, as a quick getaway is not needed. Also remember to put mega kegs in your crows nest.
Drop anchor to lock in the perfect parking job, roll up sails and pull up anchor. Puts you in a good position and you're still set up to bug-out if needed. If someone is close enough to engage in the 20 seconds it takes to get in bug-out mode that's on you for not paying attention to your surroundings.
Also another quick tip, if you ever need to immediately turn around while sailing(usually on a sloop) turn the wheel in the direction to turn and when you start turning for a sec, lower the anchor. That way the ship turns around and all you have to do it straighten the wheel and raise back up.
Its better to raise the anchor the second it finishes lowering. Then while your ship gains speed again you can set the wheel straight. Ive found this usually gives a perfect 180 turn
For some reason I see gallas all the time anchored with tons of loot on Broad but when we are sinking them it's a breeze just keep your anchors up people
The outcome of an unorganized open crew is that it’s just easier to anchor since no one is actually gonna be coordinated enough to raise all three sails in time to stop where you want to stop. And of course no one is gonna help raise the anchor again. So they just leave it.
Bruh I started playing this right before the Kraken got added and I still hard anchor, if the whole crew is coordinated you can pull off some sick turns but I do agree it's absolutely the last thing you wanna do if the entire crew isn't on standby to lift the anchor lmao

For real! I ran into these 3 dudes in arena (they where in discord) and they refused to use sails, instead they just anchored to get the chest. Even when we got into a good position to broadside they insisted on full sail navaling them, they got lucky the whole lobby was bots. Best part was when they asked for my discord, I was like "nah, when y'all learn how to use sails hmu" LOL
They don't know what they're talking about it's like I think people have this hive mind where if something seems silly everybody will say it cuz they don't want to be the one to be like oh no that works actually because you got to know what you're doing when you do it and when to do it and most people don't You know it's like balancing and weight distributation pushing and pulling leverage all that kind of stuff people don't understand that so it's stupid to do it I do this all the time and it works beautifully
It's actually way more fun just to start turning hard, drop the anchor come to a complete stop and do a fun little drift so you're facing away from the island raise the sales straighten the helm and you've landed way faster and are so ready for a quick getaway
Good advice but something I would like to point out that you didn’t is if you leave your ship for too long with the anchor raised will cause your ship to de spawn, which got very annoying when I first started out as a would take a long time to do what I needed to do then come back and my ship would be gone
Ships only Despawn if it detects that its out of water for more than a couple of minutes sounds like your ship just sank from the tide or it drifted away
I'd say another thing for new players to know is to never assume a ship is completely peaceful, regardless of how friendly they seem. Betrayals are fairly common and often stem from alliances that seem completely friendly when they're first created.
The alliance i got pulled into today started out as a fight, its my second day on the game so naturally i lost, they ended up helping me out for a couple hours and taught me a lot. Just thought it was funny how my situation was backwards
I watched someone sink their boat with a chest of rage so I stole their loot and ended trading the chest of rage to another player that needed to steal 5 of them for a quest.
Noob: drop anchor Pro: raise sails Legend: turns wheel, drops anchor and u turns ready to go back to the outpost and gets the chest all within 15 seconds
Quick note. If you are in the devils roar you might want to anchor anyway, because if the island starts having an earthquick you'r ship will move very far away.
Or don’t because an earthquake is a 50/50 warning sign of an eruption and being anchored inside on anything besides a sloop means you’re probably going to have to wait it out rather than sail outside it.
My favorite method of stopping is raising the sails "too late" and then using the harpoon to stop in time. Takes less time than just raising sails carefully or anchor stopping.
Anchoring is not a bad thing. Anchoring is NOT a bad thing. Movement is not key, situational awareness is key. Sail stoping is a HUGE waste of time and you cant park in exact spots like you can when anchoring. The drift on anything other than a sloop is insane, and the time it takes to drop anchor and raise everything is well worth a perfect parking job. Just keep your eyes on the horizon and be aware of your surroundings.

Yeah hard disagree here. The REAL lesson is more to be aware of surroundings, and if possible, always try to have quick access to returning to your ship. If you see an enemy vessel approaching in the distance, you will almost ALWAYS have time to return to the ship if you are running a solo sloop. If not, realistically there is always going to be another crew member close enough to the ship to start preparing to leave if needed. Having the anchor always up introduces other issues, such as the ship being bombarded by the storm, or keg explosions sending the ship too far to repair.
I like to turn masts and wheel all the way one way, then drop anchor, and the second it happens, raise it up. Instant u-turn. Obviously, it's not always applicable, but more like, oh sh-- I'm about to crash into the island. Also, if you want to stop somewhere and not float away. Raise sails, drop anchor, raise anchor. Then the ship will be stationary as if it were anchored, but you're able to punch it out of there as needed.
I may be a new player but I find it quicker to drop anchor then raise sails and anchor.. faster than slowing down and trying to position. Especially as a solo sloop
The problem i have with it, is if your gone away from your ship for an extended period of time. Like your doing a sunken kingdom then your ship will drift away.
I'm a new player and I've already figured this out. I only anchor if I can't wait for the ship to gradually slow down, to make a quick 180 or whenever I'm fighting the meg because my aim sucks (I haven't encountered a kraken yet but I'd lower the sails since the kraken fight requires a lot more mobility compared to meg)
The ink from the Kraken basically brings you to complete stop, i find it super easy to just raise sails 90% of the time one of its toes will be on right side or left for easy cannon shots
Raise sails for both Kraken and Meg. Kraken is already lined up and you rotate with Meg to hit shots and avoid leaving its territory. Plus all the loot is next to the ship right away.
Personally now that there’s safer seas, it’s more important to raise sails, quickly drop and then raise anchor in high seas because it’s a public server with possibility of PvP where as with safer seas, you should only do it if a skeleton ship is chasing you or if it’s patrolling and you’re close enough for it to start heading to you.
Also remember the never stop head first onto an island. First stop how you prefer, then, raise the sails and turn your ship so you have cannons facing the island and cannons facing away (you can turn in place with sails 100% up). This way its much harder for ships to roll up behind you and get in a spot where you cant shoot them.
Except in the devil's roar. If you don't anchor in the roar, the island can quake and your host will wander off and be difficult to get onto. Devil roar you need to have your boat anchored with sails down so you can leave quickly but your boat will be where you left it.
Also my advice to cannon loading is that never preload cannons because it trades flexibility to one cannonball that you are now locked in to use first instead of some other option that might work better. For example your crewmate has preloaded normal cannonballs into all cannons and enemy ship is trying to move past you from the right side and you only have time for one good shot and you decided to use chainshot to get enemy mast down but since cannons were preloaded it costs you time to shoot the normal cannonball out and load chainshot into the cannon but you were bit too late to shoot the mast down. I think Flexibility is overall better than faster shooting and helps you in wider variety of situations. TLDR; Preloading cannons gives you faster shooting but costs you lot of flexibility in the process.
Things for new players - drop anchor when you need to stop, put kegs below deck so that people cannot shoot them, put all of your materials in storage crates, put on the reapers mark flag because it hides your ship from other players, if you spam your block button and spam the bell on your ship it gives you a sword speed and damage boost. How about this u got usually 8 secs before needing to raise sails before the name of island shows up for the sloop 6 secs fpr the brig and 4 secs for a galleon depending on wind but of ur full wind thats the time rate
I’m a pirate legend and I can’t count how many times people make this mistake. When I’m sailing and I see a parked ship with their sails down it just yells “new player”. So unless you have a death wish please don’t do it
I anchor when docking now far more than I did when I started playing. Quick anchor, raise sails, fix wheel to keep it straight, raise anchor back up again, and I'm off onto my mission.
Clubhauling can be useful in a fight though...anchor down with the wheel turned and sails down makes tight and sudden turns that can throw off an opponent's aim

I mostly anchor to do a quick pivot in direction. If you need to turn around fast then you can spin the wheel all the way to the right or left and drop anchor for a split second. As soon as it drops raise it again and you just did a 180 without lowering the sails
I often drop the anchor to make super hard turns in battle .. caught players off guard with that plenty of times. Only do it if solo on a sloop or 2 players on a sloop.

100 hours: raise sails
1000 hours: ram island, anchor, raise everything

Honestly depends on your ship size😭😭 you can anchor a sloop and get it back up in 5 sec. But if you anchor a brig+ it’s problematic

The only time you anchor is in hard storms or meteors in ashen winds or hard anchor turns

I anchor when docking now far more than I did when I started playing. Quick anchor, raise sails, fix wheel to keep it straight, raise anchor back up again, and I'm off onto my mission.
Agreed, but in the Devil’s Roar it’s not so great as your ship can move away on you.

Clubhauling can be useful in a fight though...anchor down with the wheel turned and sails down makes tight and sudden turns that can throw off an opponent's aim

It only takes a couple seconds to raise anchor. If your aware of your surroundings then don't worry and just drop anchor
Lol I love that! Honestly I do it all the time if I’m solo. I feel like will full sails down it’s one less thing to worry about if you about to get attacked

Or do like me and hard anchor with sails down near treasure so that either a) people think we're new and don't bother us, or b) we can punish people that would attack new players.
I mostly anchor to do a quick pivot in direction. If you need to turn around fast then you can spin the wheel all the way to the right or left and drop anchor for a split second. As soon as it drops raise it again and you just did a 180 without lowering the sails
I suggest anchoring after raising sails and then pulling anchor back up. That way you wont glide forward when at outposts and so on.
I often drop the anchor to make super hard turns in battle .. caught players off guard with that plenty of times. Only do it if solo on a sloop or 2 players on a sloop.

Full sails to island, half sails when close, raise fully when really close, sharp left or right on the helm and drop the anchor

Classic tip. Has saved the ship a large number of times, just by making it easier to maneuver away from other attackers.
