My favorite Pat albums are ''Still Life Talking and Letter From Home'' .....I was listening to both these albums in 90.....I was 14 then....and I'm 45 now and still listen to both...R.I.P. Lyle Mayes!!
The list of great Metheny songs are endless, and I love that you've hit so many of the greats, but you're only about 30% through! Try "It's For You," "Are You Going with Me?," and "So May It Secretly Begin," and just keep on going. I wish I were both of you when you first discover these songs. Wonderful to re-experience all of them right along with you!
The title "5-5-7" refers to the rhythmic subdivisions. Try clapping a steady pulse right off the start of the piece 1-2-3-4-5-1-2-3-4-5-1-2-3-4-5-6-7 and you'll see how it lines up. It works all the way until 3:20 in the video - at this point, there are 4 bars of 4/4 to build back into the main section again. Pat's solo is in 6/4 - a more straight-ahead feel. There is so much rhythmic complexity here (especially in Lyle's counter-rhythms), yet it just washes over you like the simplest of songs. Brilliant!

Most people have their heads in the sand when it comes to Pat… You guys please keep it up and educating the masses.

His, alo g with Lyle's imagination and musicianship has no boundaries. Each track I hear still today can bring me to tears. I love your reaction to his music, you remind me of...me!
Another great track from the PMG. Just a wonderful album, Letter From Home. Listen to it often and it always puts me in a better place, especially after a long day of work. Hope you still find some time for Pat every so often. Now back to our regularly scheduled programming. 🤣
Smooth as baby snot! I love this album. I’ve raised my children on this music. This cut just makes me so happy. Pat is playing so light and free in this one. I also want to cry a little because Lyle in particular is playing the keys so sweetly. He is missed, taken away way too soon. But recordings like this one and many others keep his virtuosity alive forever. Another great review!!🎶💛👏🏽
I'll give you a little secret, Jack DeJohnnette's album Parallel Realities might as well be a Pat Metheny album with all of his signature work on it. Herbie Hancock, Pat, Dave Holland add to the mix. A GREAT album.
He was a few year ahead of me in school. But I did get to meet him once when he was visiting his grandmother. She was in a retirement home called John Knox Village and I was still in HS working at a drug store that delivered. She asked if I could wait a few minutes and meet her grandson, he would be there any minute. About that time Pat walked into her room. About all I could say was.... "You're Pat Metheny!" He said, Yes I am." We had a really brief conversation, but he was super nice. His grandmother teased me (but very nicely) every time I brought by her prescriptions after that. "All you could say was, you're Pat Metheny!"
Loving the Metheny reactions! Ive been listening to Pat for a pretty long time but it's been a little off and on over the years. But wow one could really just spend a LOOONG time just absorbing his whole catalog! ON top of that there's a TON of live stuff on UA-cam . Early, early live shows probably played in front of a few dozen people and some huge concerts like the one in Montreal in '89. Cant wait to hear what you guys do next with Pat Metheny!
One of my all time favourite PMG songs which to me was the peak of the classic lineup of Metheny, Mays, Rodby, Wertico, Aznar and Marcal as they made their best music during that period. Yes, this songs begins with a percussion giving us the idea of a person busy very busy in a hurry going to his office, it's another masterpiece of Pat Metheney Group.
My all time favorite instrumental group. I have been lucky enough to see them 3 times in concert. (The First Circle Live was just incredible. Lyle's solo is a masterpiece.) And their vocalists were just otherworldly live. I have listened to them almost every day since the As Falls Witchta... album. Nice to see a new generation of listeners!

😄 In an interview years ago PM said people always tell him they best appreciate the PMG while drivng on the freeway. His music has that wide open, spacious feel to it. Like Missouri.
I saw them on this tour in 1989. They were terrific! I was near the front row where Lyle Mays was. It was cool to see all five guys clapping to the intro to "The First Circle". Check out the title track "Letter From Home". It's a duet with Pat and Lyle and it's beautiful
Watching your reaction and listening to the music 🎵, made me tear up all over again as I remember the first time I ever heard it I'm 66 now and I still get goosebumps when I hear this one, the look on his face reacting to this with his eyes closed that was me the first time I ever heard it. Wow. I've been listening to pmg since I was 18. I've never met anyone who understood my love for his music. When I watch the reactions on your faces and hear your comments. It's pretty much the same way I feel. I've been alone most of my life and I've recently become aware that God introduced me to pmg to express his Love for me So that I could experience the emotions that married couples feel..joy, happiness. Love, sadness..etc...and Nick you said something in one of your reactions. You said when you get old and retired you could listen to pmg all day. I'm 64 and had to retire 10 years ago and I listen to pmg everyday. Enjoy it.. I've always looked for 1 word to describe PMG I finally think I've found it SUBLIME
You know, when I watch you guys react to Pat Matheny its obvious the Nick is the jazz lover......Lex, you looking over to him to see his reaction to the technical end of what is breathtaking instrumental skills is so endearing. Pat Metheny can reduce you to tears and having the musical ear to fully appreciate whats going on in the track is a gift. Did you guys ever consider checking out some Brazilian/Latin artists, like Yutaka, Ray Obiedo.....even bands like Swing Out Sister and Shakatak. The artists have the same ability to reduce one to tears and I love them. Maybe give them a whirl. I love watching you guys. Peace!

You should review the whole album. This and "Wichita Falls" are personal favorites.

Si....aparecio Pedro Aznar en el camino de Pat Metheny.....y la musica tomo un rumbo amable , lirico , amistoso , virtuoso.....Pat Metheny, viene haciendo musica notable desde hace mucho tiempo y ha seguido el camino del jazz .. de la fusion , de la musica virtuosa ...hay mucho material que debieran ver o mostrar de Pat Metheny , el es un gran genio mas que esta en mi vida ....les felicito , cada dia encuentro sus videos que estan dentro de mis gustos ...un abrazo cariñoso....¡¡¡¡
