Nick, you felt that groove. And Lex, you immediately heard “Get Up, Stand Up” and felt the powerful message in the lyrics. That’s an amazing reaction. BTW, a story is told that Bob Marley liked War and/or invited a member to Jamaica. He went on to write his song with that riff. Thanks again. 🤪
Thank YOU M.M. !! Always great requests from you. Kicked my morning off in a damn funky groove. Here’s a little funky groove you might dig, way back when we’d go to house concerts with nary a care about masks & distances... ua-cam.com/video/E9Hp9rJqW9E/v-deo.html
This is epic fire. You also gotta check out Spill The Wine with War featuring Eric Burdon, Low Rider, Cisco Kid, Why Can't We Be Friends and All Day Music, all massive hits for them.
Why just the hits? So many people making recommendations sound like they only know the hits from the radio or just have Greatest Hits albums. A helluva lot of the time the non-single tracks are better than the singles/hits.
War is/was a Los Angeles group of musicians, consisting of six African-Americans and one Norwegian harmonica player. The music is heavily steeped in Afro-Latino rhythms--because they are what primarily dominates L.A.'s musical landscape. At least they did at that time. What a fabulous "Band For All Seasons" they were/are!! I'm sooo grateful that they left such a huge body of work for subsequent generations to enjoy and keep alive. Be sure to check them out further: --Low Rider --Get Down --All Day Music --The World Is A Ghetto --L.A. Sunshine --The Cisco Kid --Gypsy Man --Why Can't We Be Friends --City-Country-City
Great reaction! Nobody else reacts to War. I turned 20 when this was released and I grooved on it. If you want to get terminally mellow, listen to their song, All Day Music.
This song reminds me of the summer of 1973 I was in the 8th grade and we would ride our bikes out in the country grooving to the sounds of War. Great times 😊✌🏾
Nothing gives me more joy than to watch others hear some great music for the first time and really enjoy it. Love this song, but my favorite of theirs is “The World is a Ghetto” (long version), more of a slow jam but was a big hit as well!
growing up in southern California in the 60's and 70's allowed me to experience this awesome genre . war, santana, malo etc. brings up some great memories .
The band united a racially divided school back in the mid-70s; I was there. "All Day Music," "The World is a Ghetto" (full length version), "Gypsy Man" (full version). You get these and you'll get me as a subscriber for sure!
War is so underappreciated. Both their inter- and post-Eric Burdon lineups were slick as hell, The World Is a Ghetto and Black-Man's Burdon are terrific albums.
Lee Oacar was a great Harmonica player for the band! Most noticeable on "Low Rider" but also contributes well to The World is a Ghetto; Why Can't We Be Friends and The Cisco Kid. But he really shines on "Gypsy Man".
I saw War with Eric Burden (who used to be the singer for The Animals) in concert in 1970. The band was phenomenal. One of the best concerts I ever saw.
Oh wow I guess I must have mixed them up completely. Maybe since they sound so similar and the tree kings movie is about "War" Thanks for the correction - Nick
War is Blues, Jazz, Funk, and a little East Side Latino. Listen to their most popular song, "Lowrider". They had so many hits and are a VERY Unique and talented group who are STILL PERFORMING TO THIS DAY OVER 50 YEARS LATER....!! They go by the name, "The Lowrider Band" as for legal reasons they can't use the name "War" however the Original members of war are in the Lowrider Band. Orale...!!
The funk is deep with this one. Have been fortunate to catch them live -- an earth-shaking small room show in Mpls on my 30th bday (Lee Oskar was FULLY in the house) & multiple times outdoors at the MN Zoo. Got the Bob Marley / 'Get Up Stand Up' story straight from Lonnie at one of those -- he said War was opening for Bob, Bob heard the riff & raved about it, asked to use it himself, et voila -- GUSU!. They're so dynamic, soulful, honest...I challenge anyone to sit still thru just about any of their tunes. You guys are awesome, keep on rocking!
Great reaction!! I’ve seen War many times back in the day. They’re fantastic. Can’t wait til you do more. “Me and Baby Brother” “Cisco Kid” “The World is a Ghetto”
Slipping into Darkness was not just a big hit but War was a huge popular group back in the seventies with a lot of great songs that were hits. The World is a Ghetto if I recall was the number one billboard album in 1973. I’m sure you heard in a movie or commercial, even a cartoon their song “Why Can’t We be Friends.” They even bad a great instrumental and one of my favorite songs I think you’ll love “City Country City” give it a listen you wont be disappointed.
Man! What memories this brings back to me when I was a 15 year old kid in the early 70s. They just don't make music lke this anymore. Erick Burden did a song with War called "Spill the Wine." Huge hit around the same time. Thanks guys.
Celebrate is a song by the band Rare Earth. Awesome band from the 69-70”s. Also good by them Get Ready, Born To Wander, Hey Big Brother. War has tons of great music. You might want to check out Low Rider, Cisco Kid, Spill The Wine, Gypsy Man among their many hits. Good stuff! BTW they just lost their bass player/singer B B Dickerson just last week. 🥲
1972-freshman year at college, my best buddy and I were DJs at the station. Friday nights we had 'dance party' and the chicks would join the cats and dance away. He and I took turns spinning the next record while the other danced with the beautiful coeds; greatest tag team ever. Got to play also ALL DAY MUSIC; one of the coolest love songs of the '70s. Thank y'all so much.
Awsome raw reaction. War can move you.. There is a studio version that that's pretty smooth. Love a lot of war tunes; The world is a ghetto, Low Rider, Cisco Kid, etc.
Yes! More War please! "The World is a Ghetto" or "All Day Music" are good ones to try. I heard you say that you should do more funk, I wholeheartedly agree! I've noticed the "Get Up Stand Up" before. I believe this was before Bob Marley. (It was 2 years prior) Parliament/Funkadelic would be good for you to try also. Big thumbs up!
Thanks for reacting to this band! WAR LIVE was my first real introduction to War back in the 1970s and I was lucky enough to see them perform live twice. They had an excitement and musicality on stage that was captivating. Would love to see them again!
wow you guys are really going down the 70's rabbit hole. need to check out some early Chicago soon. Dialogue Part 1 & 2 (1972) is a great place to start.
This is such a great and timeless song! Since you’re in a funk mood how about Living for the City from the 1973 Innervisions album by Stevie Wonder? Every song on this album is worth listening to and is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. Living for the City is a song that brings the funk and some great imagery that is sadly as relevant today as in 1973. It’s worth noting that Stevie plays the majority of instruments on the album one of the highlights in my opinion, is his funky and “loose” feel on the drums... and his organic feel in moof synthesizer..and...never mind, just listen to it😊
Ok now checkout their other hits like CISCO KID, LOWRIDER, WHY CAN'T WE BE FRIENDS. 💯💯💯💯 And I just want to say I really Dig reactions too. Bueno, Vaya con Dios!❤😎
This song is unlike any other it's amazing to hear people who have never heard this song or War but keep listening and playing and keep their amazing music alive!
Bob Marley is on record saying SLIPPIN INTO DARKNESS inspired GET UP STAND UP. AND, Steve Miller band said it inspired their song FLY LIKE AN EAGLE. WAR was may favorite group growing up.
Hey Nick N Lex. This is another band my older brothers got me into. If you've heard the song Low Rider then you've heard War. These guys are really awesome. Spill the Wine with Eric Burdon was one of my favorites as a kid. Great band, great music. Keep up the good work. My real name is Steve by the way.
Hot Rod here. A few more 70s classics. "More than a feeling" by Boston "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits "All the young dudes" by Mott the Hoople "Sweet Jane" by Lou Reed live album from the Rock and Roll Animal album "Do you feel like I do" Peter Frampton comes alive "Hotel California" Eagles ALL ARE 70S CLASSICS
This is Hot Rod. Another great 1970s funk is the song "Fencewalk" by Mandrill the studio version. If you like war you'll love this song. Listened to it in college in 1973.
😂🤣😂🤣 ok Nick coming in with the Stand up For Your Rights, waaaay after Lex sang a chorus of the song, was freaking priceless. Literally stopped the song to laugh and type this! 😁🐰
A neighbor and I saw War at a very small venue in the San Fernando Valley, CA sometime in the 80's and the band was still so tight and so good. Amazing music. And the harmonica player Lee Oskar - unbelievable. I will never forget that show. Now do The World is a Ghetto. You will get teary eyed over that song. Enjoyed your reactions to this stellar band.
WAR is originally from Long Beach, California. They had a small following when Eric Burdon, from "The Animals" saw them and released WAR's first two albums with them. He's the lead voice on "Spill The Wine", "Spirit", and others. They're primarily African American, but Lee Oskar, the harmonica player, is Danish. Great reaction! And it's true that Bob Marley asked permission to use their rift. There's actually an interview about that. Great content guys!
You guys need to check out "Que Sera, Sera," (among their other songs), by Sly and the Family Stone. It also has this funky, gospel, soul vibe, but on a more mellow note. And I don't know whether you've checked out the Staple Singers, "I'll Take You There," "Let's Do It Again"; The Ohio Players; The Isley Brothers, "Summer Breeze," "For the Love of You"; Tower of Power, etc., etc. There are so many phenomenal bands from the 70's. And how could I leave out Earth, Wind, & Fire.
Listen to City, Country, City by War. It is long, but well worth the listen. Maybe the best War song, but not a popular "hit". It's an instrumental. It's one of those you would hear on the early days of FM, late at night.
War had a lot of great hits. Try "Cisco Kid," "The World is a Ghetto," and "Spill the Wine," that last of which had Eric Burdon of The Animals providing lead vocals.
"I just want to cellebrate" is from Rare Earth a really great band, so you can try to react at "I could'nt believe what happened last night" from them.
Ever think about doing something by Love, like "You Set the Scene", "Alone Again Or", "7 and 7 Is", "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale"? Zappa? The Kinks- "Arthur", "Waterloo Sunset", "Shangri-La", "Sunny Afternoon"?
It was soooo fun seeing your joy as they broke into the song. I knew it was coming and when it did, your pure appreciation of the music brought tears to my eyes. Please please please take a listen to Edgar Winter’s Frankenstein. Better yet, watch his live performance. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Now its time for the funkiest sing ever written. "Thank You(falletnme be mice elf agin)" by "Sly and the Family Stone" (circa 70) . Bassist Larry graham literally invented the slap bass on this track. Only to be eclipsed by their stretched out slowed down even nastier version "Thank You for Talking to me Africa" Love War as well, but would first start with suggests tracks above.
Really enjoyed this one ! This band was hot; not sure why they were short - lived. I’ll have to look that up. Since you say you like fusion - how about some Boz Scaggs ? The guy can really sing and had some classic 70’s songs like “Georgia” ( Not the Ray Charles classic !) a sweet positive vibe lovesong with a jazz/pop vibe , similar to Chicago.
Hmmm, I Just Want to Celebrate is actually Rare Earth. Which is a very funky song. Not quite as funky as this one, but i deeply love both bands. I do have a special soft spot for early War with Eric Burdon. Try their songs Spirit, Magic Mountain and their amazing cover of Day In the Life by the Beatles.
Hot Rod here again!!!! Another great classic rock song from the 70s is "Foreplay/Long time" By Boston. PS, you guys are doing great. Late 60s, early 70s. Were my college days. I saw so many hall of fame bands it was insane.
Hi Sweetheards, what a wonderful song, thank you for sharing it with me, also I like the Reaggy -part in It and the strong lyrics, its so much beautiful music in this world I don't know, its great discover it with you love you both
I'll let everyone else tell you what you must play next. Whoa, this was such an amazing surprise. Not nearly as popular as many War songs since the subject matter is very adult, but I understood what the singer was going through. Great choice and upload, thanks.
I'm probably not the first to mention it, but you're mistaken, Nick. I Just Want To Celebrate was a song by Rare Earth. I don't think I've ever heard War cover that one. Great band, though. Super groovy and funky. Greatest hit you've probably heard: Low Rider. Saw them do that one live once and the whole place was hoppin'! Lots of other greats too!

@Watson Elijah yea, I have been using flixzone for since november myself =)
The 70,s were a stone cold groove, and the people were hipper!!
"The World is a Ghetto" is also great. ("Cisco Kid" and "Low Rider" were big hits)
This is epic fire. You also gotta check out Spill The Wine with War featuring Eric Burdon, Low Rider, Cisco Kid, Why Can't We Be Friends and All Day Music, all massive hits for them.
Great list. They have so much C👀L in store. It makes me smile in anticipation. War funk is so good because they know how to play the spaces. 😎👍🍁
Why just the hits? So many people making recommendations sound like they only know the hits from the radio or just have Greatest Hits albums. A helluva lot of the time the non-single tracks are better than the singles/hits.
NFL Hall of Famer Deacon Jones would moonlight as an R&B singer while playing football in LA. His backing band called Nightshift became War.
War is/was a Los Angeles group of musicians, consisting of six
African-Americans and one Norwegian harmonica player. The music is heavily steeped in Afro-Latino rhythms--because they are what primarily dominates L.A.'s musical landscape.
At least they did at that time.

I stand corrected.
Thank you for that update!
🍪🥛
They were out of Long Beach, I think
War and Sly Stone are the only bands where there are 20 guys on stage and they’re all different races and ethnicities.
Don't forget Santana
And Sly Stone was one of the first bands to cross gender lines, as well.
Trailblazing for that era...
Any of Zappa's bands were also multi racial...
Tedeski Trucks is a melting pot!
Actually Sly and the Family Stone wasn't really that mixed -- but I get your drift. Their music definitely reached all races.
All of War makes me roll down the window in the summertime and drive.
Sad to say that we just lost Morris (B. B.) Dickerson, the bass player for War, on 2nd April 2021. Yes, you need to play more War songs.
Seriously, how could you NOT like this??
Great reaction! Nobody else reacts to War. I turned 20 when this was released and I grooved on it. If you want to get terminally mellow, listen to their song, All Day Music.
This song reminds me of the summer of 1973 I was in the 8th grade and we would ride our bikes out in the country grooving to the sounds of War. Great times 😊✌🏾
Wow wow takes me back. . Almost like a voyage... Cisco Kid and All day Music are also very good👍
The title cut "All Day Music" is just as amazing but in a mellow way.
Nothing gives me more joy than to watch others hear some great music for the first time and really enjoy it. Love this song, but my favorite of theirs is “The World is a Ghetto” (long version), more of a slow jam but was a big hit as well!
That song is so sad it makes me cry
growing up in southern California in the 60's and 70's allowed me to experience this awesome genre . war, santana, malo etc. brings up some great memories .
The band united a racially divided school back in the mid-70s; I was there. "All Day Music," "The World is a Ghetto" (full length version), "Gypsy Man" (full version). You get these and you'll get me as a subscriber for sure!
WAR "LOW RIDER",, "THE CISCO KID",, "THE WORLD IS A GHETTO",, "WHY CAN'T WE BE FRIENDS",, "CITY, COUNTRY, CITY" & "FOUR CORNERED ROOM"
Four Cornered Room!!! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
This is a great band and they should not be forgotten by the younger generations. Check out Sly and the Family Stone also.
War is so underappreciated. Both their inter- and post-Eric Burdon lineups were slick as hell, The World Is a Ghetto and Black-Man's Burdon are terrific albums.
RIP - Requested to honor this funky band and the contribution of B.B. DICKERSON, the bassist, who just passed away this month, April 2, 2021, at 71. 🎶
Lee Oacar was a great Harmonica player for the band! Most noticeable on "Low Rider" but also contributes well to The World is a Ghetto; Why Can't We Be Friends and The Cisco Kid. But he really shines on "Gypsy Man".
Agree completely!!
He shines also on the song "City Country City"!
Don’t Let No One Get You Down is such a perfect encapsulation of why War was so special. Gorgeous!
😁 Take your time! 😍 I'm always here with snacks..... 🙄 Until Tours start up again. 😁 Thanks for keeping me occupied! 🍿🐰
If you like this then you'll love 'Time Has Come Today' by the Chambers Brothers, a slice of pure psychedelic soul music.

Mor 70 funk by Mandrill. Song is Fenvewalk. Amazing.
Fencewalk by Mandrill.
I'm glad War is getting the recognition they deserve. They are what we listened to and danced to in the years before disco.
"I Just Want to Celebrate (Another day of living) was not a War song. Rare Earth did it.
Oh wow I guess I must have mixed them up completely. Maybe since they sound so similar and the tree kings movie is about "War" Thanks for the correction - Nick
And it's an awesome song, I really hope they react to it! (The long album version)
Brilliant band and brilliant reaction - Groove with All Day Music

Hey Nick N Lex. This is another band my older brothers got me into. If you've heard the song Low Rider then you've heard War.
These guys are really awesome. Spill the Wine with Eric Burdon was one of my favorites as a kid. Great band, great music. Keep up the good work. My real name is Steve by the way.

"More than a feeling" by Boston
"Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits
"All the young dudes" by Mott the Hoople
"Sweet Jane" by Lou Reed live album from the Rock and Roll Animal album
"Do you feel like I do" Peter Frampton comes alive
"Hotel California" Eagles
ALL ARE 70S CLASSICS

Eric Burdon of the Animals did vocals on a few songs with War songs, "Spill the Wine" a great one.

War had a lot of great hits. Try "Cisco Kid," "The World is a Ghetto," and "Spill the Wine," that last of which had Eric Burdon of The Animals providing lead vocals.
great seventies group, with or without Eric Burdon
I'm glad I grew up on Soul Train, raised up during the fabulous 70,s
At 64 I'm still grooving to the best of the best!@ Pura Vida Mae/ Shalom Ya,ll!
Ex
"I just want to cellebrate" is from Rare Earth a really great band, so you can try to react at "I could'nt believe what happened last night" from them.
Great tune... great band!
Suavecito by Malo please.
🤣🤣🤣🤣😳 The "Directors Cut!" 🍿🐰
Lowrider and Spill the Wine are awesome grooves!
You should try The Meters. They have a similar vibe. I believe the Neville Brothers first band if I’m not mistaken. try “ sissy strut”.
Or "Look-a-Py-Py"..
The Meters rule.....
Only to be eclipsed by their stretched out slowed down even nastier version "Thank You for Talking to me Africa"
Love War as well, but would first start with suggests tracks above.
War is just too cool. Very relaxing.
Yes!! “Summer Madness” by Kool & The Gang is a beautiful Ol’ School R&B instrumental that is just so....cool. It’s a tune I never ever get tired of...
War was part of my Sound Track in the early 70's
Hot Rod here again!!!!
Another great classic rock song from the 70s is "Foreplay/Long time"
By Boston.
PS, you guys are doing great. Late 60s, early 70s. Were my college days. I saw so many hall of fame bands it was insane.
Hi Sweetheards, what a wonderful song, thank you for sharing it with me, also I like the Reaggy -part in It and the strong lyrics, its so much beautiful music in this world I don't know, its great discover it with you
love you both
I'll let everyone else tell you what you must play next. Whoa, this was such an amazing surprise. Not nearly as popular as many War songs since the subject matter is very adult, but I understood what the singer was going through. Great choice and upload, thanks.
And the harmonica. The harmonica player wore a tool belt with about 8 harmonicas in it for various sounds.
Great bluesy guitar solo.
