Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos Huge hello to Rob! Yeah Rob is the one that me started watching all of these travel channels & I just think its a very great community full of very great people!
We are just back from our trip to Andalusia, including Granada. Due to your video (and also our Airbnb host recommendation), we had breakfast at Via Colon. I really wanted churros again (hubby not as much a fan) and I'd seen there was breakfast food. So I got my churros and hubby got more of an American breakfast with a lot of meat. It was fabulous, thanks!
All of these dishes look amazing! We love ham and baguette as well. Such a perfect do-it-yourself meal when travelling. Thank you for sharing this and for the name of the cafe! We will definitely check it out if we are in Granada! :)
I make my Spanish style ham sandwich the following way: a fine coat of mildly garlic flavored olive oil. Toast the bread en “la chapa”. Pile up the best jamon Serrano you can afford. Coat the side of the bread you are going to put a slice of tomato on with maionese ( the mayo prevents the bread from getting soggy). Use a good quality tomato and a slice of roasted red pepper. Enjoy it with a strong cup of black coffee or chimarron.
Hi Sam and Audrey, This was a really great video. I loved seeing you guys enjoy your favourite Spanish breakfast foods. I found your experience informative but also funny - especially when Sam ordered a carrot cake in the end. I couldn't help but giggle when he later said he didn't need the carrot cake. Samuel & Audrey, Saw your Viacolon (Granada) breakfast video while doing research for a trip I took in October '18. That restaurant looked so inviting and the breakfast you ordered (churros con chocolate and tortilla espanola) so delicious that I simply had no option but to go there myself, My breakfast certainly lived up to expectations. I used to travel a lot around California some time ago. I'm not sure if there are still many places left for budget travelers here, maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps it all depends on what budget means to you.
That is a very meagre portion of churros and the chocolate is diluted, it should be darker and richer than that. If you are going to be spending a day working out on the hillsides bringing in olives, you need something filling like that tortilla ; ketchup? NEVER!! unless you are a Philistine. Spreading your sandwich with tomato is way healthier than a load of fats (butter, margarine or even olive oil) and as you said gives a moisture which makes the bread part slide down easily. Most of us just have 'un café con leche y tostada (or media tostada)' that is 'a coffee and a half (or a whole if you prefer) toast' and a 'toast' is not just a measly slice of bread but maybe (depending on the establishment) a chapata cuadrada halved horizontally and the equivalent of a couple of slices of thick sliced bread for the media tostada or double that for a full tostada. 19 Euros, that was expensive. Two breakfasts with extra coffee normally costs us 6.20€ but we aren't in a tourst trap like Granada.

Unfortunately you are in a touristic bar (I know it, I live in Granada) and this is not an authentic spanish breakfast. No one in Spain eats Tortilla in the morning. In Spain the traditional breakfast (in a bar) is composed by squeezed orange juice, cofee or "colacao" (hot cocoa) and toasted bread (true bread) with olive oil, smeared tomato and salt, or the same with serrano ham or toasted bread with butter and marmalade (strawberry or peach), and other less popular options like toasted bread with paté, or ham with cheese, or sobrasada and cheese. Hot chocolate and churros use to be a "merienda" (half afternoon little meal) or a breakfast for special days and sundays. What you have eat in Granada are REAL churros, this thing made in Madrid is industrial and far of what original churros are. In fact the "porra" is the first part of the wheel of the churro (if you know how churros are made). Also carrot cake... is a modern trend and as a desert after lunch or for "merienda".
I was shocked to see that they served the tortilla with tomato. I have ordered tortilla de patatas many times in Spain and they have never given me fresh vegetables with it (only not too healthy fried pepper). However, you did not get bread... :S Never satisfied with this dish.
When u realize that the real spanish national foos is "tortilla de patatas" but u go to a bar in Granada for breakfast and order it instead of "pan con aceite y azucar". _Andalusian laughs_
Las cafeterías españolas siempre tan ruidosas. Las personas con problemas auditivos no podemos entrar. No sé dan cuenta de que hacen demasiado ruido. Gritan, golpean las cucharillas, el ruido del café....

Thank you for letting us know about that Torii!
In basque country is typical to eat churros with chocolate in the morning too after a full night party and in new year morning.
You need to chew! How can you even taste food/flavors? How???
Good point.
I was shocked to see that they served the tortilla with tomato. I have ordered tortilla de patatas many times in Spain and they have never given me fresh vegetables with it (only not too healthy fried pepper). However, you did not get bread... :S Never satisfied with this dish.
AH, I do think it is unusual to get the tomatoes. Did you have a favorite place to try it?
P'amboli /pa amb tomaquet is one of the best aspects of spanish/catalan (&mallorquin etc.) bocadillo culture.
Cool to hear.
When u realize that the real spanish national foos is "tortilla de patatas" but u go to a bar in Granada for breakfast and order it instead of "pan con aceite y azucar". _Andalusian laughs_
