Convenient Life of a Private Pilot

  • This video is about the Convenient Life of a Private Pilot. Becoming a pilot and getting an airplane has been one of the best decisions that I've ever made. Since I've acquired my first airplane over a decade ago I have not had the need to fly commercial. General aviation has been an extremely rewarding experience for my family and I and has also offered many personal and business advantages. I currently fly a Piper Cherokee Six and a Piper Turbo Saratoga. I use the Cherokee Six for the heavier flights with the family since it has a useful load of nearly 1600lbs and I use the Turbo Saratoga for the lighter and longer flights to get to a destination faster.

      Hi Al, thanks a lot my friend! Man, Audio/video/data network was my thing back in the days. I used to wire up banks, major retailers, and skyscrapers. But you are so right! It’s hard to currently find employees. What boggles me is that a lot of people are still believing everything they hear and going along with the plandemic. If they haven’t learned by now then I guess they never will my friend.

    Javier's radio work? If I were on the freq, he'd blend in with the rest of the PICs. He's got it handled.
    Regarding beating airliners... You make some valid points. Of course, there is a point stage-length wise where flying commercial saves time. Factor in the stress that comes with commercial travel these days? I'm betting you're more relaxed when you get to where you're going, even though you piloted your airplane there.
    On another topic, I'm curious as to if you've looked into any advantage in getting your Commercial Certificate as far as insurance rates? Ever looked into that?

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Hi EJ! Let’s put it this way, everywhere I fly I will beat an airline door to door and that’s on the Cherokee Six. Of course, every situation is different and dependent on other factors. My insurance rates are already pretty low. I have well over 1000 hours so a commercial rating will not help the rates by much at this point. The certificate that significantly helps bring insurance costs down for high performance airplanes is the instrument certification. Other things that help are the AOPA training courses. Although, I have considered at some point to add the commercial rating. I have the commercial flight requirements done. It would just be a matter of some flight training, written exam, and check ride so it is likely that I will get it at some point.

    Hola Raul, I wrote to you about year or more ago after first finding your channel. It's been so long that now you have 2 aircraft ;-). Great to see you with your son as a flying companion and teaching him the ropes. I started training about 2 years ago on/off and finally got my PPL in mid November. I bought an Ercoupe about a year ago to finish my training, get my license and build time but fell in love with LowN'Slow VFR flying so I'm sticking to it. Our daughter lives about 2 hrs away flight time so when I feel confident enough I'll get the wife to join and star reaping the benefits of the life of a Private Pilot.
    I must tell you that watching your video helped me a lot. Lately I've been watching way to many YT videos about fatal GA accidents and was quite discouraged about continuing this adventure. Don't get me wrong, I love to learn as much as I can about preventing disaster (ADM, AQP) but its so depressing to always be reading about highly qualified pilots killing themselves.
    Thanks again for promoting fun and safe GA.
    VIc Y. (Formerly in FL now in SC).

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Hola amigo! Thanks for catching up once again and congratulations on your PPL. If you like flying then don't let accidents discourage you. I've had friends die in cars, motorcycles and plenty of other ways. Flying is mainly about being safe and preventative practices. I've been flying since 1998 and nothing worries me more than driving. I've seen horrified things and had a number of close calls driving. And to top it all out, statistically, no transportation is safer than flying. In fact, next to motorcycles cars are the least unsafe. So if you are driving a car you are more at risk and yet most people don't even think about it twice. If you are not afraid to get behind the wheel then neither should you be afraid of flying. The key is to operate whichever in the safest manner as possible my friend. While it is sad to hear about pilot's occasionally killing themselves you would probably not even be able to keep up with the amount of drivers that die everyday. From safest to least = airplanes, trains, boats, cars, motorcycles. Hope that makes you feel better my friend. 😀

    May sound corny but, I got the game Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. I actually have been interested in flying helicopters for a while. But, I thought that airplanes are good to know too. I can't believe how much a game has taught me regarding the basic knowledge. I mean I want to get my license in both disciplines. But, planes have been a blast to learn about.
    Also, were those prices on your flight plan the cost to land at the different airports? I've never seen that.

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Hi Liki, I don’t think that sounds corny at all. Back when I started flying I was using Microsoft Flight Simulator 1998 😆. It can really help with learning how to navigate and help keep cost down with your overall flight training. The prices on foreflight app were the fuel prices. Other than possible overnight parking fees there are no landing fees at general aviation airports. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

      How’s traveling with firearms?

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому

      @@2wheeltayy Great question but the transportation of firearms is an in-depth subject. The short answer is that the transportation of firearms are allowed by the federal government as part of the citizen constitutional right to bear arms. That being said, it does have limitations, restrictions, and certain regulatory requirements. The pilot must be aware of the state laws as well as federal laws. For example, many FBO facilities would fall under federal jurisdiction. But outside in the parking lot may fall under state jurisdiction.

    I own a Cherokee 140 and even at 120 mph TAS, it's impressive how far I can go and beat the airlines. Generally speaking, any place that I can get to without a fuel stop, I'm going to beat the airlines. Even in my super slow airplane.

I only have a fixed prop, fixed gear Cherokee Archer. But, I don't have the hassle of waiting in lines, and if we need to stop and go to the bathroom, we can! With the higher fuel prices, I can't fly as cheap, either. But to me, I'd rather fly myself and take my time.

      Hi Kurt, On a 1966 Cherokee Six and many other airplanes in that era the speed indicators were originally built in mph in the primary ring and knots in the secondary ring. Having flown the Six with a mph speed indicator for so long I just got used to it. But I’ve been flying for so long that it really makes me no difference. I’ll convert knots to mph instantly. 😀

    Hi Raul -- Always enjoy your flights, especially when Javier is helping out. Question for you: An 8 hour flight seems kind of long to stay mentally sharp. How would you compare an 8 hour flight in your Cherokee 6 to an 8 hour drive? I can see that you benefit quite a bit from the auto-pilot, but even with that, that seems like a pretty long day.

    • @FlyingDirty
      @FlyingDirty  Рік тому +1

      Hi Mike! Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts and for your question. An 8 hour flight could definitely be too long to stay sharp without being properly prepared. To keep me sharp I have a checklist of items with a few practical procedures that I like to do. A few examples would be to get drinks and snacks, the flight planning, airplane packed, weight & balance, have it topped off, inspected, a couple of days before a flight. The day before a long flight I like to rest and be at idle just checking the weather conditions several times throughout the day so I know what to anticipate. If everything checks out then I’ll get a good night rest. I’ll plan refueling stop/s as needed in between to stretch and recharge. The other key factor that you nailed is the autopilot. Before I had an autopilot I wouldn’t fly that long of a stretch in one day. It was unbearable to hand fly for more than 4 hours. But having a gpss autopilot really helps to keep me sound and fresh on those long journeys. But an additional precautionary measure that I also like and enjoy is bringing Javier with me. He is learning to fly and handles a great deal of the atc communications. Having him makes the trip more enjoyable and he helps me from getting too tired. Lastly, for me personally, a 6-8 hour drive is much more dreadful and painful. I will get tired and bored quickly of driving that long. I really don’t enjoy driving as much. So when I drive the key is frequent coffee stops 😀. Thanks for that question!
