  • Just a quick video on the front struts replacement on my 5th Gen 4runner plus other suspension work.
    Just to clarify, the struts were only replaced due to the rust that I saw at the base of the springs. They were not leaking or weak or even noisy.
    The mileage on my 4runner at the time of replacement was 154,000 miles, considering the mileage I had no problem in paying $120 for a complete set of take offs (with 300 miles on them) .
    I actually spend more on all the other parts $195 for both front sway bar links + bushings + upper strut bushings .
    What are your thoughts, should I have squeezed some more miles out of them?
    Would you have done the same?
    If you don’t live in Canada or in the rust ring, you most likely will not have to deal with this rust.
    Check out some of my must haves, on my Amazon store:

    What size hose and coupler did you use to extend the condensation hose? Care to share an Amazon link?

      I’ll have to get back to you tomorrow,I had it laying around.

      So I measured the “coupler” it’s exactly 10mm in diameter(outside diameter), any hardware store should have it. The hose can be fitted while your there. I hope this helps .

    Your 4Runner gives me hope. I just moved to Massachusetts from Texas and I am very concerned with salt corrosion. Yours doesn’t really look that bad. The spring perch is obviously an area worth keeping an eye on tho. I used fluid film on my frame rails, cross members, body mounts, and ground bolts… maybe I should have just sprayed that gunk everywhere but it gets messy and doesn’t smell great.

    • @VikingsGarage
      @VikingsGarage  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you Sir, the point is addressing those crucial areas sooner then later.(which you did, and that’s good)
      Mind you I wash my car almost every week in the winter. I’ve told my wife, if I get a total of 10 years out of my 4runner I’ll be very happy. 5 down , 5 more to go.
      Then I’ll buy the nicest 2022 4runner example I can find. 🤣🤣

    Which side specific are the springs? I removed them and mixed them up, I want it to be correct reinstalling. All I see is one spring has 8 coils and the other 9, each has it own paint colors on the bottom as well.

    Did you replace with OEM stock shocks, the same size? I’m think of replacing both front and rear suspensions for my 2011 SR5. I see there are ppl selling new suspensions thru facebook as they immediately lift up. I dont care about lifting up but hoping that new oem suspension will perform better than now. What do you think? Should I go ahead replacing them in this purpose?

    • @VikingsGarage
      @VikingsGarage  Рік тому +2

      Absolutely my friend, that’s exactly what I did. The struts I bought were take offs with only 500 miles.
      I think it’s not only smart but logical, specially if you don’t plan on doing a lift.
      You will feel the improvement right away.

    X-REAS system on my 2014 limited is leaking...what shocks did you use to replace. looks like i have to do all 4.

    • @VikingsGarage
      @VikingsGarage  2 роки тому +2

      Unfortunately a very common problem with X-REAS system. I replaced all my stuff with stock oem parts . But there’s a lot of other good options out there, whatever you do just don’t use that X-REAS stuff again. It will leak eventually.

    How's it going? I have a 2021 4 runner with kdss. I'm planning on lifting the front 2.5 inches and 1 inch in the rear with uca upgrade. Do you think I'll have issues down the line with bushings wearing out quickly and issues with the kdss lean?

    • @VikingsGarage
      @VikingsGarage  2 роки тому +2

      Absolutely, kdss system has its limitations. I’m not going to lie what they are I do not know. I would suggest either leave it alone or lots of research.

    How did you remove the struts? The standard pull the 2 19mm around the lower ball joint and let the lower control arm swing down?

      Sway bar needs to be removed along with the sway bar links.

    At what mileage should I check my 4runner front struts? Mine has 100,000 miles of normal road driving. No off road

    • @VikingsGarage
      @VikingsGarage  10 місяців тому +1

      I’ve seen these things last about double of that. Your biggest concern is leak, if you see them wet, then it’s time to change. If they look ok to you, leave them alone.
      Those OEM units are very strong. 😉

    • @TheHillrat4wd
      @TheHillrat4wd 10 місяців тому +2

      I'm changing a set out today with over 200,000 now that being said they should have been changed a while back. These are quite heavy and tind to last a long time. As other people have mentioned if they're leaking they're definitely bad. But you can't go on that alone. Struts and shocks are a wear item whether they leak or not. They wear out internally. Struts and shocks are basically a hydraulic cylinder with the equivalent of a piston and a valve body which allows the fluid to flow with resistance also the fluid breaks down the internal components break down so even if they're not leaking they can still be bad not to mention the fact that most of them are nitrogen charged and can lose their pressure.

    • @VikingsGarage
      @VikingsGarage  10 місяців тому +2

      That’s why it’s so hard to gauge when to change them. Usually if the ride feels more bouncy, chances are the unit is probably worn internally. Very good explanation on your part. Thank you!! 👍🏻

    I’m getting ready to replace my front shocks on my 4runner but I notice it has a very tiny number on it. one of them is a 1 and the other is 2 does it matter which side it goes to?

    • @VikingsGarage
      @VikingsGarage  Рік тому +1

      It does matter, there’s a right and left side. Do one at the time and match them up.(The sway bar link attached is the difference)
