I saw a car care nut video where he talks about 4runner suspensions and touches on xreas. He explains-like you did-that it’s fully mechanical/hydraulic not electrical, he also says that Toyota designed it so that the system cannot be maintained and fluid cannot be added/exchanged. You have to disconnect at check valves otherwise you will lose fluid that cannot be added… 😂 it’s like Toyota turned German or something with engineering on this one…

Great video, thanks. I'm doing the same thing this weekend and installing an Icon suspension. I don't think the system is reusable. I had one leaky strut (front driver side) and Toyota told me the entire system had to be replaced ($5300).

@@markstraka8184 Worked find, $1300 had dealer do it so it shows up on Cars Fax report plus dealer guarrenteed work and equipment 24k miles 24 months. Rides the same on the road, maybe a slight bounce on NE Ohio potholes & patchwork road repairs. I dont off road with Limited. Hardware still on frame. Quote was 2400 to replace 2, 2600 for all 4 shocks. 2015 model 4-runner. Not worth the investment to me. Replacement shocks are Toyota stock shocks. 1300 included bushings & control arms. Good luck.

the tire under the frame is a great idea. i had a vehicle fall on me once and partially pin me. to be honest it was a Suzuki samurai 😂 but my T4R would have turned out different im sure.

Good video, but if you disconnect the XREAS at the check valves you won't lose any fluid. You were real close, just next to wear you disconnected. I have a 4th gen but the setup is almost the same. The FSM shows the exact points to disconnect.
Just bought a used 2016 with 60k only to find out this weekend that all the shocks/struts are leaking. Guess I will be doing this sooner than later. Sucks that a company makes a system like this that cant be maintained.

Thank you for the great video. Did you experience change in the ride quality after deleting the XREAS ? XREAS system is known to reduce the sway and nose dive in the limited 4runner. Did you 4runner start swaying and leaning when you turn ?
It handles pretty good around corners, no noticeable/major swaying or leaning. The new suspension is a bit stiffer in the front (old man emu). I definitely feel the road a bit more but it handles larger bumps and dips better.
What differences have you found after the change? Did you replace the XREAS with the Old Man Emu suspension, or something else? I just purchased a 2018 4Runner Limited with 60K miles. It has the XREAS and there are no signs of leaks, not surprisingly since it has never been off road. I am going to take a 2 month trip west and will be driving off road quite a bit. I am in the process of having skid plates and rock sliders (Metal Tech, the only ones I've found that fit on the Limited without modifications) installed and am thinking about whether I should stay with the XREAS until it starts leaking or just go ahead and replace it.

You could, yes. I would honestly probably choose the Bilstein 5100 though. They will provide a smoother ride and the option is there to raise the height by adjusting the spring perches, if you ever decide that you want some lift

@@badermalik2823 I personally went with a heavier spring because the stock spring rate sagged quite a bit as I added weight. If you want to keep the stock coil I would add an air bag kit to the rear

It is possible but you would have to disconnect the system at the check valves. If it is not disconnected correctly you will get hydraulic fluid all over the road. It wouldn’t be a lot of shop time for them to take it out, especially if they are already taking the shocks out anyways
Please let me know if you did this Kenneth as I am considering the same thing on my 2015 Limited. Another option would be to ask the shop to just disconnect and plug the XREAS lines at the shocks. Then have them replace the shocks with non XREAS shocks. Then I could save a bit of money and remove the rest of the XREAS system myself.
You likely pulled your ABS speed sensor cable somehow causing a disconnect, short or damage. The xrease is in no way connected to the electrical system

@@SGFAdventures only a little on the front fender liner in reverse with steering wheel turned all the way to the side. I fixed this by heating up the fender liner and pushing it forward with a mallet
I have nothing against xreas, when it isn’t leaking it works great. I wanted to add a proper suspension lift to my 4runner so I had to do away with the xreas
Why not LOL? Nicer interior, probably the best 4Runner in snow and ice with the full time 4WD and locking center differential LOL. Can be modified to do most anything any of the other 4Runners can do LOL.

Great video! Why not leaving the system with the lines intact and only cut the line where it leads to the shock? This way you just replace the shocks.

You’ll want to do it all at the same time. The shocks and xreas are basically one big unit

Once the X-reas is out it is just like any other 5th generation 4runner. No differences with the mounts. Hope that helps

No electronics. Just a mechanical/hydraulic sysyem. Once removed it is just like any other 5th gen 4runner.

That would work, yes. You could always do an aftermarket shock with stock coils/springs. The coil springs are what gives the lift

They are connected with hydraulic hoses as they work with the xreas reservoirs/system

It should have xreas unless it was swapped out already. Just check to see if you have shocks with hydraulic lines attached
