From his white and beige desert tunic in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, to the sleek black combat suit he wears in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. We take a deep look at the meaning of his outfit's change in color and how its connected to the mythology George Lucas created for Star Wars.

    Luke's extreme Force potential may have been handed down to him from his father, and his idealism handed down from his mother, but it was his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru and his simple but wholesome upbringing under them that ultimately made him the optimistic and well adjusted man he became, allowing him to make the most of his natural gifts from his parents without those gifts leading him in the wrong direction.
    For example when Anakin lost his mother, his immediate reaction was vengeful wanton slaughter. Whilst it was a traumatic experience for sure, Anakin allowed this trauma to breed more trauma, he never really got past it, and it directly influenced his actions concerning Padme, leading to his ultimate fall, and the heartbreaking reality of him taking a path Shmi never would've wanted for her son, and would've been heartbroken seeing him become a monster. In a sense, Anakin's reaction to his mother's death meant that Anakin himself truly killed her, by destroying everything she taught him and wanted for him. Anakin's extremely unhealthy inability to cope with loss and destructive behavior when faced with it is most definitely the result of his harsh, cruel, and uncertain childhood as a slave. His mother, the one and only source of warmth, comfort, and love in his short and brutal life, along with the ever present danger one of them could be sold off without the other. This harsh reality he was born into caused him to desperately cling to anyone he loved, and utterly refuse to lose them. Then when faced with the reality of their loss because life doesn't accommodate man's defiant hubris, not even for the Chosen One, he is unable to deal with it in a healthy way, sewing more tragedy.
    Luke on the other hand, even though he grew up on the same planet, had a vastly different upbringing from that of his father. He had a healthy, stable environment with two guardians who loved him very much and made sure he was provided for. Even if it wasn't luxurious it was STABLE. Luke got three meals a day, Anakin and his mother got whatever their master (Watto, who could definitely be a vindictive bastard, was a "easier" master by their standards) decided to provide that day, or whatever they could hopefully manage to scavenge, if anything. Luke had a home and a bed to sleep in every night, Anakin could be sold off or gambled away to a new master at any given moment, possibly an even worse one, and possibly without his mother. Luke had to do chores around the farm lest he face the ornery wrath of Uncle Owen. Anakin and Shmi could often expect to be worked to the absolute brink lest they face torture, physical/emotional abuse, any number of threats, etc.
    Anyway, when we see Luke face a situation similar to Anakin losing his mother; Luke losing his aunt and uncle, naturally he's devastated and in shock but unlike his dad he accepts it and moves on. He also dedicates his role in this new life to helping topple the evil regime responsible and his motivation isn't revenge, rather attempting to return a sense of just rule to the Galaxy.

    I think the black also implies that he could be no corrupted. Honestly, the black worked so well in being ambiguous. Did it mean he was becoming like Vader. For that once scene it helped paint that picture. It showed that he was serious as you said, but at the end it also showed that frankly he couldn't be corrupted. You can stain white, you can stain it far easier than any other color, but black always had a sort of resistence to being stained. Throw a little dirt on something white and shows up, but you might not even notice the dirt if it was black.

    Considering the strong influence that Japanese martial arts had on the aesthetics of Star Wars, it may also have been relevant to the designers that the color of Luke's costumes match the traditional belt color (and associated experience level and temperment) used in Judo and Karate to signify rank.
    Luke begins as an eager but barely trained novice (white belt) in ANH, is a physically capable but overconfident (brown belt) student in ESB, and is a physically adept practitioner who is on the early stages of a lifelong path of inner work and continual refinement in ROTJ (new black belt).
    Even Luke's first donning of the orange pilot's uniform and yellow ceremonial jacket fall within this sequence (though some schools differ in whether orange precedes yellow or vice versa).
    The legendary origins of the belt system also emphasize the "staining" of the pristine individual until proficiency or mastery obtained, so this is not inconsistent with previously stated hypotheses.
    P.S. The white inner flap on Luke's ROTJ outfit reflects that, despite his outer appearance, at core he would never fall to the dark side, but it is also reminiscent of the black belts of experienced practitioners that fray with use becoming increasingly "white" over time, symbolically forever returning to being a "beginner".

So when Return of the Jedi was about to be released, everything about A New Hope (as we should now call it) was very deeply grained in my memory, while ESB was very dim …. So in that final battle…. I had forgotten that Luke had a cyborg arm already…. So for some reason i became convinced that slicing Vader’s arm off, made it appear in place of Luke’s real arm…. Great Video, Also I remember from a print article many, many years ago was with the color schemes of his outfits, which were inspired by the ranking systems in traditional MA = (SW) White - White Belt - you are starting your MA journey and are innocent to the realities and harshness of the world and training. (ESB) Brown - Brown Belt - You have endured the pain and realities of training, but your ego may be more arrogant of your abilities than reality since you are not fully trained. (ROTJ) Black - Black Belt - You have endured your physical training, you are powerful and your skills are dangerous, this is where you must begin to cultivate your mind/spirit as not to allow your ego to become a bully (Dark Side) ---- End of ROJ - the white on the upper front of his black jacket represents the stripes on a black belt where you begin to cultivate your mind/spirit to bring back some of the peace/innocence married with your physical skills.

    One of things I found interesting about return of the Jedi, is that when we first see Luke in person, he's wearing a dark cloak and Force chokes the guards. Plus the way he interacts with Jabba, he comes off quite menacing on how he conducts himself. With all that together, Luke comes vaguely off like a Sith. Didn't noticed that as a kid. Despite how composed and resolute in his actions and intent. Luke is going through deep emotional turmoil and is very conflicted and tempted towards the dark side. That's one of the things I love about Star Wars is how much Luke changes as a person, from naive farm boy, to battle-hardened but overconfident Commander, to a warrior monk.

    Alan, you mentioned that a sign of being an adult is taking responsibility for someone or something other than yourself. At it's roots, being religious is no difference. It is an understanding that the world does not revolve around you, and that God is at the center. Speaking as a Catholic, our Faith is not divorced from reason, but rather faith is strengthened by reason. We are all beholden to the natural law, God teaches us these laws through his commandments and teachings. Up until the past hundred or so years we didn't understand that certain foods like chicken and pork can be dangerous if not cooked to 165 degrees. Pigs in particular carry a lot of food-borne illnesses. They didn't have the concept of bacteria and viruses 3000-4000 years ago, so God told the Jewish people not to eat pork. He even gives them laws regarding clean and unclean and we can clearly see an attempt to help people realize that some people were sick, and needed to be kept separate since they lacked the medicine we have now. Not only does God teach us how to stay healthy and safe, he not so subtly tells us that we need each other, that we need community to survive, and that certain choices and lifestyles leads to a breakdown in the fabric of community. Where that breakdown occurs, is where tyrants insert themselves as the answer.

    This video made me understands why Hajime Isayama compared Eren to Luke despite those videos and pictures of portraying the Attack Titan and Darth Vader as sort of the same from the certain point of view. Just like how Han, Leia, Chewbacca, 3-PO and R-2 are Luke's resonsibilities, those who Eren considered his friends, Armin and Mikasa in particular, are his responsibilities, whether they asked for it or not. And this is why he unleashed the Rumbling because from his point of view, it is the only thing that can really protect them and whoever that lived on Paradis.
    Fun Fact: People kept calling Eren out for unleashing the Rumbling but nobody seemed to care about Luke blowing up the Death Star anymore in nowadays.

    • @justagecko
      @justagecko Рік тому +1

      I see your point, and I do agree to an extent.
      However, I believe the different reaction was how it was framed. The Rumbling was much more apocalyptic than the destruction of the Death Star. While there was a million people on the Death Star and some were probably civilians, it had just destroyed Alderaan, genociding 2 billion people and all the plants, animals, and culture the planet had to offer (No one wants their culture and traditions to be forgotten).
      By destroying the Death Star, Luke had saved billions of other worlds from being destroyed. One could even say Luke avenged Alderaan. I can't really say Eren avenged of saved the nations Marley invaded and annexed.
      I like your analysis though. Both Eren and Luke could have prioritized their friends in the moment, forgetting the global/galactic effects of their actions in the moment. Luke just happened to be in a better situation.

    • @lerneanlion
      @lerneanlion Рік тому +1

      @@justagecko Eren's situation was not better. Marley was rallying the world to come to commit genocide against Paradis in order to further their own agenda that is to obtain the Founding Titan and use the Rumbling for their own gain. Plus, we all saw what Marley did to the Mid-East Allied Forces at the Battle of Fort Slava.
      Also, the problem is how Marley ruled its territories and the influences it was spreading before the Rumbling. Marley is a bully. A bully who keeps spreading hatred and racism everywhere around the world. In other words, Marley can do better with the Powers of the Titans to stop hatred. But no, they used the Titans to enrich themselves and to become the top dog of the world, keep repeating the same thing again and again like how the Old Eldian Empire did back when it was in power.

      Legends Luke literally becomes the grand master of the New Jedi Order. Handles multiple crises for the New Republic. Pretty much singlehandly brings back the Jedi Order and it doesn't get crushed because he has a bad dream. Marries and has a kid who is almost as powerful as he is. Eventually dies and becomes a Force ghost to guide his great great grandson (Cade Skywalker).

      Na Rian just showed that Luke only needed a little light (Rey) to remind him of how he should be. Rian made Luke into a person, Legends Luke was just badly written fan fiction by someone that doesn't understand the character. This is just another reason why he sequels were such a success, it's the another nail in the coffin for legends.

      @@everettjohnson9374 lmao copium. It sure is a good thing that most people would disagree with you...even now, it's being commonly regarded that the sequels are trash compared to Legends. Even Disney are bringing back elements of Legends because of how much better written they were.

    I would push back on the idea of holding back criticism because it is" for children" I think that things written for children need to have even more care and be better written than things written for adults. Because kids aren't stupid they just lack experience. And if the experience that you expose them to is poorly written, not well thought out etc. It's going to deeply affect them later in life

    • @GenerationTech
      @GenerationTech  Рік тому +2

      No for sure criticism is good and should be pushed forward. It’s just the toxicity and anger that accompanies it sometimes is cringy as hell. Especially when it’s an older adult bullying younger fans. This is the problem with social media we’re so hidden behind the keyboard nowadays it’s difficult to remember that there are just people on the other side. Especially on platforms like UA-cam we have to remember it’s often kids who are commenting.

    Ah, a subject near and dear to my heart 'Return of the Jedi'.
    Full disclosure 'Return of the Jedi' is my favorite Star Wars film. It is not the best Star Wars film (Empire Strikes Back retains that honor). The movie feels like two seperate films. Jedi starts out with rescuing Han Solo then ends with an attack on a second deathstar. I could harp on more dumb things in Jedi, but I'll save time. Sadly Jedi is regarded as the weakest of the original trilogy movies, but i still love it.
    However there are some great moments in Jedi. Luke being a new kind of Jedi that was never classically trained has to learn about the force on his own especially since Yoda dies. The dark side can tempt Luke. We see Luke force choke a Gamorrean guard going into Jaba's palace one of the only time we see a light side user do that.
    I also love how the subplot of the second act is the emperor trying to turn Luke to the dark side. Some great moments in there.
    I wish they had more time to fleash these stories out, but the comics and books are the best we had. And now they're no longer cannon. Such a waste.

    George Lucas while born and raised in a Methodist family., was looking at age 12 as the time when in many cultures a person passes from being am "innocent child" to an "Adult" in that scolety.
    The most odious example being, in the Jewish Faith a Boy at 12 becomes a Man at his Bar Mitzvah and a girl becomes a Woman at her But Mitzvah.
    That time in all of our lives when we know we are not just children our parents, but self aware being who knows Right from Wrong.
    That is the "12 Year Old" Lucas is referring to. To the Child, that while he/she still lives inside all of us, is also that something in you that knows what is Wrong, like Killing, and other things you do are Right, like loving your fellow beings in the Universe.

    2:22 I think your take is really backwards, and I don't mean that disrespectfully. If that's your opinion, not hating you for it. Couple things: Luke's cloak in RoTJ was actually brown. It just looked black on camera. His tunic was absolutely black, and when they did episode 3, George intentionally mirrors that attire with Anakin (in timeline order, Luke is mirroring Anakin obv). Anakin chose his black tunic as sort of a dramatic flair, as per usual with Anakin, to piss off the Jedi council, but it also was made of a slightly durable leather that offered some protection, so it had its function too (typical Anakin).
    George intentionally set luke up to be wearing a black tunic in RoTJ to really imply that Luke might turn to the dark side. He force chokes gamoreans, and although Leia killed Jabba, it's questionable if Luke was going to. They built up the tension of Luke's choice in the throne room scene, and we see Luke strongly in the light when he's trying to convince Vader to turn back to the light. But in the throne room with Palpatine, it starts turning to the fear that, even if Luke kills Palpatine, will that ultimately lead him to the dark side? And when Vader taunts him with Leia, Luke truly does tap into the dark side and almost killed Vader and could've turned to the dark side. But then he sees Vaders hand and remembers. Remembers why he's here. That he's not going to kill Vader. Or the emperor, even if it means he dies. He makes the impossible choice of being a true Jedi. But he definitely struggled and could've turned.
    But I do see your point. I do think, even if he killed Vader in a moment of rage, he wouldn't become Palpatine servant. Or had vader overcome Luke, he would've still chosen to not turn to the dark side. Palpatine didn't have the hold over Luke that he did with Anakin. No dying wife. No assisted murder of the second in command of the Jedi order with a sith lord. So I think the intentions Luke had going into his confrontation of Vader would've ultimately won out even if he hadn't thrown away his light saber and refused the emperor, if he had killed Vader, or lost and forced to turn, I do agree he probably wouldn't turn.
    But yeah, disagree slightly I guess, but it's always fun talking star wars

    The one that everyone runs to or bows down to are not the smartest or the strongest it's just that the people aren't..put that same person in a room of like minded people and that wouldn't be treated the same or fill as powerful and some would be destroyed,especially if their evil..
    Luke was smart for not joining the darkside because he knew the strength in being Good.

    10:55 I can understand why you have that perspective, but I think the idea that a person isn't an adult until they take responsibility for someone other than themselves, is inherently flawed. Some individuals are natural loners, this doesn't stop them from being fiercely independent and capable. Furthermore, while responsibility can be an indication of someone's maturity, it is not a prerequisite for adulthood or maturity. An aversion to responsibility does not necessarily mean that person is not a mature adult, they could simply not wish to have the potential to negatively impact others through responsibilities, or just not be interested in a lifestyle that results in such responsibilities, in addition they are still responsible for their own actions, well being, and survival. Depending on a person's values, philosophies, and ideologies, they could also consider freedom, volunteering and helping people, or the pursuit of knowledge to be more important than focusing on having a girlfriend, reproducing, and having a pet or houseplants. Having responsibilities does not make someone into an adult, we see this clearly in the numerous parents, pet owners, and business owners, who have demonstrated their carelessness, and inability to care for and maintain those responsibilities. Love your channel btw amazing content.
