    I never understood why many fans criticize Padmé for "stopping being a fighter" after TPM. To begin with, in AOTC, it is clearly shown how she, despite being no longer a queen, is still a great fighter, as she showed in the Battle of Geonosis. Later, in RotS, she no longer fights in battles, which is understandable because she is pregnant with twins, but she still shows herself to be a capable and strong-willed woman during the rise of Sidious and Vader, refusing to join her husband to the Dark Side. Padmé NEVER stopped being a strong woman

      I completely agree. And while I haven't grown up with the clone wars tv show, or fully seen it (I didn't have the right channels for it), I've seen the clips that matters of Padme, and the way she fights against the growing authoritarian regime and the centralisation of power. She always fights for the people first, and I've heard people say that she proved you could both be against the war whilst still being a loyalist.

    Although what Anakin suffered when he found out about Padmé's death was horrible, I can't even imagine what her parents felt while having to bury their young, beautiful and kind daughter. The saddest thing is that they later passed away without even knowing about their grandchildren Luke and Leia, although such privilege would be gotten by the children of Padme's sister, whose narration about their knowledge about Anakin would be recorded for the book "Jedi vs Sith"

      This was also a fleeting, mostly long-distance fling. The relationship lasted more or less from the middle of Attack of the Clones (which takes place 22 BBY) to close to the end of Revenge of the Sith (19 BBY). In addition, they never could live together after the bodyguard time on Naboo and so, for the majority of their marriage they were more often than not apart, stealing moments with each other between their extremely busy and almost entirely separate lives.

    Is it "two wrongs don't make a right"? On some level, is it love or is it wanting what you cannot have for the thrill of the hunt? For Padme, she knew the Jedi Order frowned on relationships and was mature enough to understand the societal discrepancies that forbid such a relationship. Somewhere along the way, she thought this was okay. For Anakin, he was well...has a Costco-size shopping cart of HR violations probably including inappropriate use of the force. No saints in this relationship.

    • @jeffreycarman2185
      @jeffreycarman2185 11 місяців тому +2

      As mature and intelligent as Padme was, she was relatively naive when it came to romance, having only had two prior love interests where the relationship was broken up by the burden of her duties.
      Also, keep in mind that Attack of the Clones is set in 22 BBY and Revenge of the Sith is set in 19 BBY, so their relationship is a fleeting youthful fling, which, lasted three years at the very most. A lot of that time short the two are apart, between Anakin fighting on the front lines of The Clone Wars and Padme’s duties related to The Senate, added to the fact that their relationship had to be kept secret (so they never could have cohabitated).

    • @DeathMessenger1988
      @DeathMessenger1988 11 місяців тому +1

      First: Padmé is young, bit naive and actually spent so much time working to help others via social service, refugee relocation and politics that she had no time for romance. Her finding some and getting attached to it makes perfect sense, because in a way she's not that different from Anakin.
      Second: You should read the Clone Wars: Wild Space novel, which touches upon post-Attack of the Clone events. Padmé essentially decided the Jedi Order could go fuck itself because they not only behaved atrociously towards Anakin, but also thought they could go send Obi-Wan to ORDER Padmé (who's a Republic Senator, not a Jedi, and thus technically one of their bosses) to act like them and forsake her own feelings. All because Padmé wanted to see him in the medbay. There's no "thrill of the hunt" involved, it's Padmé realizing just how inhuman the Jedi mentality is and deciding both she and Anakin deserved better. If not for Obi-Wan and Yoda being absolute assholes in regards to her, it's likely the Naboo wedding wouldn't have occurred so quickly. It was a mix of war looming down on their heads + Padmé and Anakin lashing out at the Jedi by committing to each other. You need to read that novel prologue to get it, I could go on forever on how infuriating and disgusting the Jedi were in that scene.
      Third: The idea that Anakin used the Force to, well, force Padmé to fall in love with him is ridiculous. Mind Tricks don't work on weak-minded people, and Sith-style Force Persuasion would essentially be a Mind Rape a la Kilgrave, and Padmé would KNOW AND FEEL something's wrong almost immediately, especially when Anakin was away in war.

    I think one part of their relationship that often gets overlooked is that they didn't just have to keep it secret because of the Jedi code, but also for political reasons.
    Anakin was a war hero, and to an extent a celebrity, the republic absolutely adored him.
    Padme was in her own right a rockstar, her radical bills often gained a lot of popular support from the common citizen.
    Had it become public the two were not only together but had actually been married and conceived twins in secret, the republic would have, for lack of a better term, gone absolutely _bonkers._

In AOTC padre says are you gonna use one of your mind tricks on me and in reply Anakin tells padme it only works on a weak mind. Love is powerful thing. Even strong people can change when love blinds someone. At the arena padme tells Anakin she's loved him from when he walked back into her life. The problem is they both trying to build a wall as padme was a senator and Anakin a Jedi showing the world would have Anakin expelled and padme no longer allowed to serve as a senator. I think the simplest explanation is just that they were both teens then young adults from very structured rigid social orders who saw in each other a kind of rebelliousness against their ordered existence. Padme is not the first otherwise intelligent independent young woman to fall for a bad boy she thinks she can fix; and Anakin isn't the first young man with a troubled past and unresolved parental traumas to become egotistical and toxic towards a woman he loves. The awkwardness and tragedy of their romance is probably the most realistic thing in the prequels. Lucas was not so subtly attempting to make them a (literal and literary) sci-fi Romeo and Juliet.

And shouldn't be a competent elected official at the age of 14. Or at least not with the heavy hand of a parent or guardian. I think you're almost there. The thing is, Padme spent pretty much her entire life surrounded by lies. She would spend most of her time either sround her handmaidens, who by design, were meant to be deceitful (constantly pretending to be each other and all), or around politicians. I don't think I need to explain that one. Aside from her family, there were probably very few people in Padme's life who were actually honest with her. Then comes Anakin, who is not only very honest with Padme, but - as Allen describes - basically wears his emotions on his sleeve. That's something Padme finds pretty desireable, along with the fact that she can also be honest with him.

    I don't think love is something you could manipulate with the force. Or not at least with Anakin's knowledge. (it's even stated in the movies)
    Maybe Palpatine who was a master manipulator could pull something like that off, but love has to be there on both sides I think. Otherwise like you said, it would just fade away after a while.
    If Anakin could use the force on Padmé to make her fall in love with him, why couldn't he make her join him on the side of the sith in the end?

      If this theory is true then it took him at least a few days to do it whereas their confrontation on Mustafar lasted what... 5 minutes? Plus they were both in a _very_ heightened emotional state in that scene so it would presumably be especially difficult in that moment even if Anakin was doing it consciously.

    Extremely cold take, but Anakin and Padme should have been *at least* 16 (Probably 18) for the plot, and romance to make sense.
    Like, it was seen as extremely controversial that Anakin be taken into the order at the age of 10, which seems a little strange to me. He would have memories of his mother, of course, but considering the plethora of species the Jedi deal with (And that Shmi was a slave so couldn't have been around much) it seems like not making an exception would *be* the exception.
    If Anakin was older, we would have been able to see him almost like a mirrored version of Luke. A young kid from Tatooine, except this time being accustomed to the wicked ways of the galaxy (Which would easily set him up for conflict with the detached Jedi Order). The best part is he could retain an identical role as the one he played in the movie, simply more active than before. They could allude to a romantic interest between him and Padme, and have him offer to race for the hyperdrive.
    The friendship between him and Obi-Wan would also make more sense if they were closer in age. A big problem for Anakin was the lack of a father figure, but in Canon, Obi-Wan appears to have filled that role extremely well, instead of the A New Hope "He was a cunning warrior, and a good friend." This version of Anakin would mirror the relationship between Han and Luke, but in reverse. Now a former slave who participated in dangerous races to feed his aging mother, he would bring a pragmatic view that would teach Obi-Wan as much as Obi-Wan taught him.
    At first, their beliefs would align. (Although, the distinction here is that Anakin's political views were shaped *before* he entered the Order, not during) Being Qui-Gon's disciple, Obi-Wan would see the hypocrisy and corruption in the Republic (and Jedi), just as Anakin would, but would differ in the extent they believed it had purveyed. Obi-Wan may aspire to become a council member, or Grand Master, in order to rectify the problems, while Anakin may feel angrier and angrier over the council's lack of awareness towards the suffering in the Outer Rim.
    These debates, unlike in the Original Trilogy, could be entirely explicit, as it could contrast the rag-tag nature of the Millienium Falcon's crew. After Qui-Gon's death, Anakin and Obi-Wan could both be angry at the order, but following Obi-Wan's promotion to knight (Or Master), or maybe even a military role (Which would be doubly ironic, with Obi-Wan wanting peace, and for the eventual reversal between Anakin and Obi-Wan's military roles).
    As time goes on, however, and the Clone Wars begin, their beliefs begin to drift apart. While I didn't mention it as much as I should have, Padme being as old as Anakin (And hopefully both less awkward) would provide a third layer to this relationship, with her being Leia, but instead of a fierce revolutionary, a well intentioned oftentimes worried politician striving to fix the Republic, as Obi-Wan does the Order. Knowing the flaws of the system well, Anakin would become radicalized, however having the ideals before Palpatine so he isn't seen as an idiot the whole time, especially during the Clone Wars. Becoming a great general, and finally having the comradery (And perhaps even father figure in Ularen) he would suddenly gain a position of power to enact this change. Perhaps he would overstep his bounds, and destroy a greedy corporation he had memories of, or impede on Hutt space to free slaves, and is saved from the fallout by Obi-Wan.
    With Palpatine being the small push he needs to become a fully fledged revolutionary, and maybe even seeing the order might can bring, he becomes entirely disenfranchized with the Republic, with the Chancellor himself wishing to have more power to fix the same wrongs Anakin is trying to. In this way, the relationship between Anakin and Palpatine would also change; from a weird manipulative grooming thing, to a statesmen tricking a powerful general (and political figure) into giving him absolute power. The Jedi and Republic would drift apart as the war goes on, as the leadership struggles to mend their beliefs and the military action forced upon them, especially against an insurgency that many in the Order don't disagree with.
    The way that Anakin and Obi-Wan come to blows isn't important. What is how neither of them want to. We see in the Original Trilogy, there is little animosity between them (Especially considering what they both *should* feel in regards to the other). Maybe Anakin launches a devastating attack on the Separatists, killing the leadership, *and* many civilians. Obi-Wan could be given an ultimatum by the council (ever wary of action) to stop his friend from ackrewing too much power. Order 66 can play out as it did, but in order to mend the continuity Padme must stay with Leia for a few years so she would remember her. This isn't really that hard to imagine as to how it could happen, really.
    In this way, a lot of the problems with Star Wars could be mended. Anakin isn't a double child-murderer, or an impulsive idiot. His relationship with Obi-Wan isn't perfect then suddenly blows up overnight, the love between Anakin and Padme isn't largely nonsensical, and the Jedi give Anakin a reason to rebel. (Also Palpatine would still be hated by the audience for how he would probably instantly take away all of Anakin's power once he no longer needs him or something).

Their meetup an relationship in Eps 2 an 3 looked a bit an sounded alot like plenty of other average relationship arcs. Seems Anakin got lucky lasting long as he did when you think of his upbringing. She probably had her reasons for changing her mind with Anakin
    Highly doubt he used some power on her. Remember he wasnt even an intro level Master good or evil yet. An so he had lil or no idea how to focus his abilities to deliberately influence another sentient being like that. Especially since NO ONE seemed to react to it and shoulda sensed it if hes doing something like that even unintentionally.

    Anakin became an ultra-elite member of the Jedi Order, among the few. There were about 10,000 Jedi in a galaxy of hundreds of trillions of sentient species. So, although Padme is an elite Queen and Senator, Anakin is elite in his own right.

    Sure, that makes sense. Like you said, I doubt he would have manipulated her consciously, but use of the force may have given him more charisma. I can definitely see a woman in her position being attracted to a "bad boy," but he's more of a whiny teenager than a bad boy at this point. We see him at his best during the Clone Wars series, and it's easy to see why a woman would be attracted to him at that point, but of course she'd already married him before he reached that.
    With Obi-Wan and Satine, I doubt any force powers were needed. It seems they were around the same age and better suited to each other (or they would be if their respective responsibilities hadn't gotten in the way).

    I'm happy you brought this up cause it always seemed odd to me. I mean, how could Padmé, an advocate for democracy and for the republic, fall for Anakin when he always showed his dark totalitarian inclinations? Yes, we women tend to believe (or were made to believe) that we can "fix" any man and that's maybe the case here, but he was born of the Force itself, pair that with the intensity of the adolescence and Anakin's personality and you'll have a very dangerous mix. Let's be real, Anakin hated to lose.

    Got Force telekinesis, and lightning, and manipulation, and precognition which are all defined applications of The Force. What the unknown is, would be those subtle applications - whether consciously or unconsciously - that manipulate via The Force, shaping destinies by the power of one's will (or emotions).
    One anecdotal analogy is one anime/manga where the time traveler "resets" time so many times, so as to protect someone, that it instead makes this otherwise insignificant person into the most powerful being due to the fabric of reality becoming super tightly woven around the character.

They were far too incompatible to ever have had a real, functional, and enduring relationship.

  • @uumlau

    The whole thing makes sense once you realize that Lucas is depicting a very young, passionate and NAIVE super-powered boy. Of course he falls for Palpatine's antics. He's not that bright. But it's frustrating to watch because to any normal adult (and many reasonably mature teenagers) that it's all a lie. Here and there on the internet you can find "what if" depictions of what would have happened if Anakin were smart (or at least less naive).
    Another thought that occurs to me is that one big reason for his naivete is that he typically relies on the force to understand things, so he hasn't developed much in the way of interpersonal skills that even a typical teenager might have developed by this time. His force senses won't work against Palpatine (who even managed to keep Yoda from figuring it out), so of course he'll be easily manipulated. It just isn't obvious when you're watching the story in a movie. You'd almost need an extra-detailed novelization to drop hints about what is going on, e.g., perhaps Anakin having a stray thought that things just didn't make sense, but then such thoughts are quickly lost and forgotten (under Palpatine's influence).

    One massive flaw in this theory. It would require Padme being weak-minded. Nothing indicates her will was weak enough to be vulnerable to that kind of thing. Yes it probably wouldn't have worked out had they not been stuck together but I think the time together was the key factor not the Force.
    I don't think the Force was a factor at all but if it was I think at most it fanned the embers that were rising naturally. And I don't think Anakin was consciously doing it if that happened.

    • @laurashepherd2479
      @laurashepherd2479 4 місяці тому

      I don't think Padme has to be weak minded for some subtle influencing with the Force to have an effect. He's hot so she was probably physically attracted to him, and a bit of Force influence could have been what made the difference in encouraging her natural attraction while helping her overlook his childishness and huge red flags 😅 I think after they "fell in love" and got married a genuine attachment formed, especially as Anakin matured rapidly over the course of the war (well in some ways lol). But I think the story makes a lot more sense if you view it from the perspective explained in this video, because otherwise she just changes her attitude towards him too quickly with no reasonable explanation.
