The most painful part is seeing Furina thinking she had failed to protect everyone while the flooding is occurring
she had to put all of her trust in focalors and didn't even know if it was going to work until everything was all over. must have been a very scary 500 years for her
I never realized that until now. I was caught so in between the two different sides of furinas and focalors scenes that I didn’t fully realize that she didn’t have the under and closure we had at the time.
I knew focalors goodbye to her was a “thanks you for a job well done” and the reward being her freedom, and felt confused as to why she was still just sitting there as she was pretty much drowning; but to furina it most likely seemed a last consolation before one’s end, as like “well you did your best kid. In the end we lost, but thank you for trying”, and was just resigning herself to die with the people she failed to save. Not even trying survive or escape, she wanted to die with them because they were her people whom she loved……

Yeahh! She was like all 500 years of her suffering were worthless😢 I really want travelers to hug her so much after the ending quest.
She didn’t even get closure and in her character quests she still blames herself and others still blame her too 😭 like where is the apology!!
One of the things that breaks my heart the most is the despair in Furina's face. The way she slumps in her seat with such an empty look in her eyes, crying silently. God it genuinely hurts to see her succumb to it.
Truee! Her face is shocked, sad, and depressed after she knows that 500 years of suffering is a failure 😭 at least in the end, everyone is saved. Furina you did a good job 💙

most hero stories have powers that saves everyone, be it super strength, an overpowered skill, have the resources to build armies etc. Yet Furina, despite not having any of that, manage to save everyone on fontaine.

Yeah! I think this is why many people love her. Archon saves the region with their power but Furina....She is just a mortal without power but she saves Fontaine and everyone. I really respect her so much💙

i guess focalor knew herself really well, she knew she would always choose fontaine over herself, so she knew furina would as well, she, furina/focalor, did such a good job but it sucks that she never got to enjoy herself after becoming the hydro archon

Furina is one of the most powerful analogues for depression I've ever seen. Her characterization of smiling and being someone flamboyant at the cost of her own health, until the point that she's so disassociated from herself that she doesn't even know when she's crying - that's what depression is. It's that.
fr!! even i was fooled by her act but when i saw how she really felt all this time i found her relatable but it also made me sad bc i wanted to see her happy. I still like that Hoyo decided to take the tragic route because it feels more realistic, like a happy ending would be so predictable and cliché, and tragic characters are so rare nowadays, even if it hurts to see them suffer💔
I couldn't agree more, and the fact that she's still in part stuck with the mannerisms she used as a fasade even after the prophecy was resolved, and struggled to take care of herself when moving out to live alone felt so real.
Heres a question for you guys:Is that really that sad or are you guys just exaggerating?

The story of Fontaine is an absolute Masterpiece. A "silent" heroine, who fooled everyone until the end.
And the true heroine who never get anything for her heroic sacrifices
What a well-developed character Furina is, even in such a happy and lively song the lyrics and some events within the demo can make you understand that they are talking about escapism and evading reality (which makes a lot of sense to everything she experienced in the prophecy). The demo begins with a man talking about the incredible play that Furina is about to perform but in the meantime you see the audience going about their daily lives as if that didn't matter while you then cut to Furina's scene where she starts dancing and singing... For some empty seats... That the man talks about the great performance that she is about to do and that it seems that no one cares or no one noticed reflects how Furina is doing the incredible performance of an archon and no one realizes that it is acted. The song tells you that the world is a stage (I mean, everyone is an actor), if you feel like crying then laugh (after all if the world is a stage, you are an actor on it and you should be able to pretend). It can lead you to interpret that you should not show your true feelings to anyone and that makes sense Furina always behaving like a majestic conceited archon with a big smile but in the fountain you could hear her crying begging for everything to end... Just like she says the song, the world is a stage, if you want to cry... LAUGH. (Furina on the verge of madness).

the ost simply being titled fontaine and it plays during focalor's sacrifice should go to show just how much she loved her people and the nation. this also extends to furina too when she danced with her
pretty sure that the execution ost itself is called le souvenir avec le crepuscule. the fontaine ost itself is a combination of other shorter themes, including that one.

@@argonautnana I don't think the OST for this scene is out? Both Fountaine and le souvenir avec le crepuscule aren't quite right. Missing the Xylophone that plays while she dances and the violin/violia section that plays when Furina is crying

The funny thing is that I was having a discussion about Fontaine music with someone else back in 4.1. Their argument was that Fontaine didn't have as memorable music. I pointed to this specific track in the Court of Fontaine and said, "It almost sounds like something that plays at the beginning of the credits. Like something is ending." Well, looks like I was right. It WAS the song played while something ends.

I hope she'll get happy stories in the future, events, another story quest and prelude quest before we head to Natlan. She deserves better 😭
Oh she'll definitely get a second story quest- all archons got one (except Venti) and it's usually connected to the region's second weekly boss
@@Tfbravenone of these prelude quest had a happy ending. Raiden saying bye to makoto forever, the little mushrooms sacrificing themselves, and zhongli saying bye to good azdaha.
@@komgoo4974well the mushrooms returned to Apep as they wanted, Apep was cleansed, and all of Forbidden knowledge was finally eliminated. It wasn't so bad
Maybe instead of furina getting a second story quest, neuvillette will, because most of the archon story quests revolve around something that happened in the past connected to the archon but i dont see how that would work with furina being a human. If we get a second neuvillette story quest I hope it telps us more about sovereigns and their past.
@@hampter8546 that's actually a good point- especially when you take into account that Furina's story quest is the only character quest where we didn't get a playable trial version of the character (yes I know it's because she was a normal human at that point and only got her Vision at the end of quest- but my point still stands)
Ngl I was really worried if they going fumble on Act 5 and Furina character development. I also really liked the fact Hoyoverse doesn't do the whole "Oh she open her heart and share her burden, therefore every problem is solved." No Furina actually finished her mission and saved Fontaine.
They learned from Inazuma and did not hire those writers again. Which I'm happy for Hoyo.

@@wienzard93Not sure if the writers are different but they really did take all the criticism from back then to heart and I'm so glad about it. The way they introduced Melus and Silver so we *actually* cared about their deaths instead of a throwaway NPC like Teppei. Man, they really stepped up. Can't wait to see what they have in store for Natlan.
@@wienzard93What’s interesting is that, to my memory, Inazuma was well on track for having a great story, that’s why (in my opinion at least) the first patch’s quests had a well paced story progression that promised a fitting finale. Unfortunately there was a change in the writing teams halfway through, which would explain the circus we eventually got in the second half.
Either they brought the previous team back after that fiasco, or the new team stepped up, or a different team altogether was put together for Sumeru onwards.😢
@@lemonbunny71actually, Act 1 and Act 2 were good. Act 3 WAS the culprit of the Inazuma AQ. It was so tedious and convoluted because so many stuff was happening at once and we were forced to be flung in all directions which confused the hell out of the players doing the AQ. So yeah, that’s when I and lots of people put it on the survey to extend the AQ to more acts to flesh out the story, cos clearly three acts were not enough anymore.
And they learned very well. That’s why Sumeru and Fontaine have five acts now, because they saw that people were willing to invest their time in the AQ as long as it was great.

I genuinely felt depressed for a while after finishing the archon quest… I’ve a graduate degree on literature and of the story of Furina and the whole arc of Fontaine is a masterclass in storytelling.
And even in her story quest, after reiterating she will not step on the stage, she did it without hesitation for the others… Ugh I want her to be selfish for once 😭
I already felt empty after the beginning with Navia. And it was the first time where I felt so empty after the archon quest. Usually I love the last bit where you get to ask the archon or supporting character about the next nation. This time I didnt even care about Natlan I just had Furina on my mind.

she was about to not return to the stage cuz of what happened in the Archon Quest, but when she and gramps neuvillette saw the story on the stage play she and the traveller helped kinda reflects what happened to her, she got past her regrets and returned to the stage, but now she plays for herself now.
God, seeing the genuine anguish and grief of Neuvilette when he delivered the verdict and hearing his demo melody with such a heavy tone gave me goosebumps and a few tears
It rained that bad they had to make it clear in the travel log which made me sad even more.

@@Yen-jw1ls it’s in the quest menu. You can see and listen every dialogue from the Archon quests and the story quest. They don’t add the cinematic but they add explanations and dialogue from them and this quote came from the latest Archon quest and man it hurt to read it

The part that really sent me was neuvilettes voice shudder after the fact as he gives his sentence to absolve fontaine. Of all the times the weather switched when he became sad for the outcome of a trial this was the one that made him shed tears and sob in the rawest human way.
The quest somehow RAISED Neuvillette's "Worried Grandpa" level.
Furina nearly became a neet, though I don't blame her.

The feeling of Triumph you get after finishing the 4.2 Archon quest and seeing Fontaine survive is real. I was literally jumping for joy when I saw those cutscenes.

The thing is, when i saw neuvillette just stand there seeing focalors dance. My sense as a big brother for a little sister appears so hard.
Seeing my precious, sassy, and silly sister that around me for so long just to sacrifice herself while i just frozen there is not the way. Just by Neuvillette PoV, i cried in the entire dance

It's crazy just how much sacrifice Focalors and Furina gave to Fontaine. Focalors sacrificed herself and the throne while Furina endured 500 years of acting and deceiving everyone and she couldn't even tell anyone about it.
Even with Neuvilette becoming the sovereign ruler of fontain. He still considered himself as the chief iudex because he knew what a real archon means and furina/focalor still deserves it.
I was recently thinking about the time 1 year ago when the same happened to "that one" Sumeru OST and there was the other video like this one back then. More or less the same has happened this time around but for some reason, this time it cut *real* deep. I'll need some time to process this one. They really outdid themselves with the story.

It was one of the few things makes me shut my eyes immediately, and the only one to make me do that every time

This reminds me of Nahida crying cutscene in 3.2. that song also hits different after the quest.
After this quest Furina became my favourite character, and ffs, her VA, holy sheesh. Also, when I was listening to the song before 4.2, I was trying to remember what song that was, when it clocked in my brain, when I realized it was the song that played when Focalors was dancing and waiting for her death, I can confirm, I never felt such fast and strong shivers, my whole body trembled. Focalors ultimate wish was to be part of an opera, and she finally did a litle performance at the end of her life. Furina's life was a nightmare, probably at the same level as Xiao, 500 years of torture, 500 years of pretending to be someone else, of wearing a mask, which would cause the ruin of Fontaine the moment she would drop it. I can understand ppl also hating Focalors the God, but honestly, it's not like she left Furina to be tortured while she rested peacefully. Focalors entire life was basically becoming the new archon, realizing the whole mess Egeria left for her, trying to think of a way to solve it, and after she found a way, her whole part was to gather enerfy enough to kill herself. Basically imagine that you have 500 years to live, but u spend them working just to be killed by your own work and only one or two ppl remember you and your sacrifice. Best archon quest ever, it has the same or higher level of emotional damage to the player as Sumero's archon quest, but in Fontaine, the music is simply on point. Nahida deleting Rukhedevata still gets me sad, Focalors last dance still brings taers to my eyes. There are just so many moments where they get us emotionally. We realizing we not only betrayed Furina, for her it probably felt like 10 stabs in her back for EACH PERSON that she trusted and is now trying to make the 500 years that she was tortured become nothing but work in vain. Neuvillette's feeling sadness when he knows Focalors plans and after she died. Focalors saying "Hydro dragon, hydro dragon, don't cry", once again, Focalors last dance, Neuvillette forgiving the people of Fontaine's sins, Furina's whole hope getting shattered when she is declared guilty and accepting her fate, while she silently cries as she realizes that the 500 years she suffered were for nothing. At the end of the quest u want to hug her and tell her that everything is alright, that she completed her mission and can now live freely, that it wasn't in vain, she did good. God dam this girl needs love.
I dont usually read much on Genshin cuz they are pretty straightforward…but this quest just gets me going after 3 days of completing it. There still lingering that pulls me in without closure…just wanna say wat u wrote hit the nail in the head for me

It broke my heart to see furina depressed on her seat but it warms my heart that she is no longer burdened by the prophecy.
With the city flooded it makes the song ancient as if we are in a place like bioshock a forgotten land hiding in the waves. But there is akqays hop at the end

I was actually in emotional shutdown for a few days after the archon quest and Furina’s story quest. Both hit me to the soul so hard that it took me a while to process the entire thing. Honestly hated Natlan. With the Climax being the only real good part of the whole update in my opinion so far. Just not interesting, and I hate the pokemon like gimmick so much. Worse most of the gimmick characters only really work in Natlan as well. Katina can not climb walls outside of Natlan any better if not worse than say Kirara. Meanwhile Furina and Ayaka's abilities to almost indefinitely travel across water works in any regions. Meanwhile Kirara is honestly better to have on your team than Katina. So basically Katina is a worse Kirara which relies on gimmicks to be worth having in a party. ie she's terrible, which is a shame, such a cute character design, and the drill would be fun to use if it didn't go through stamina so quickly and relied on a gimmick to be worth using in Natlan only. Overall I don't care for a single Natlan character, nor Natlan itself. It's design/artstyle and gimmicks are just not appealing.
It's a similar issue I had with Sumeru, though Sumeru broke players being so large that I know I lot of people who quit playing the game literally as a result of Sumeru. Sumeru was just too large, and had characters that only a few people care about now. Nahida being the only one I still seeing people really use still, maybe the Wanderer sometimes.
The duality of this song being both chill and sad is the duality of Focalor snd Furina... I was expecting her to have a split personality but the revealed truth hurts even more
Every time I heard this track in Fontaine, I can't help but be reminded of the final dance of Focalor.
The emotional rollercoaster throughout the Fontaine Archon Quest kinda broke me, not gonna lie.
It's funny how people who hated her in the beginning love her now and want to protect her.
My sister was one of those people.
We had a pretty strong argument when the Fontaine region came out. She couldn't stand her and I liked her instantly. So I defended her constantly.
I just binged through all 5 Fontaine Acts, one after another over the past week.

Actually, its kinda guaranteed since used to be an archon, and archons (except venti) gets a 2nd story quest of their own, probably involving another new weekly boss for fontaine other than the whale.
But then again, neuvillette is the new ruler of fontaine so idk...
I sincerely hope for a quest where Furina can be seen beloved while being authentic and true to herself…at least show how Neuvillete or Chlorinde was there to ease her transition especially after how they trapped her in the AQ

As someone who already love Furina since 4.0 his whole story make cry more than ever i have been in an long time.
My fav fontaine ost, whenever it plays in the city I stop and just sit down till its over to enjoy it
my thought as well. i can predict until 5.0 arrives i will get haunted everytime this track come to play, or maybe even longer. it really left it marks
I could only imagine what Furina felt. She kept face for hundreds of years not showing her people what she truly felt about the situation in order to keep their hopes up only for those same people to gang up on her in the end. I would melt at that instant Spending years trying to save your own people only for them to turn on you.
Only once i cried in a video game before 4.2. thst was back with Life is strange and Kate in episode 2. This 4.2 and Furina's quest made me cry 5 times. Furina may not be the archon or never was but just for this self sacrifice she did for 500 years she may be the best character in Genshin impact if not to say in all of video game history. She will always be the Hydro Archon even now when the truth is out and she is no longer the Archon.
I heard this for only a few seconds and had to pause it because otherwise, I would have burst into tears.

The funny thing is, the type of waltz it is (if you're into cinema music) is usually used to express tragedy and drama. But because the region is completely centered around treating court cases like theater, it's subtle. So you don't see the foreshadowing. Especially since Hoyo doesn't usually get deep with their Archon quests.

Finishing Sumeru - Fontaine Archon Quest this week, just finished the 4.2 Archon Quest today, man, I still can't get over from that Nahida scene and now that Focalors scene, can't believe I'm really hooked with the story that I cried

I’m not usually a lore enjoyer of Genshin at all and typically don’t necessarily get attached to or care about the quests. But the Fontaine archon quests really were something else to me. Certainly my favorite ones yet.

Traveller was so uncharacteristically heartless in this AQ. I feel like this is the only part where Inazuma (and then carried over to Sumeru) outshines fontaine's archon quest, because traveller was truly heartbroken and grieving Teppei's death. In 4.2 there was no sympathy whatsoever even during her dance, or when Neuvillette tells them what actually happened. The writers forgot all about Traveler's inner monologue and feelings beyond them wanting answers, mostly using the character as a plot device instead. Which is such a shame because every other character had so much dimension
Yeah! This is what I want to say to her after all this happened to her but..... We didn't have a chance to say it ;w; and we just talked rudely to her in Her story quest. I feel bad for Furina😭
@@AraColdyI mean the only time Traveler actually had emotional response was on the Sumeru AQ when they endlessly saw Dunyurzad limbo death.
Remember when we getting angry over eremites and told Dehya to go away to protect Dunyurzad because Traveler takes that moment personally? Thats is the most memorable moment on traveler for me other than the We will be Reunited end scene.
That angry scene alone makes me feel Traveler as an actual living person with feeling rather than a plot device. And yes I was angry at myself as a traveler during the entire arc of Fontaine because like OP said, they just a plot device.
Unrelated: Just putting this out here for the people who still don't understand how Focalors's execution saved Fontaine.
When the Hydro Archon died, she gave Neuvillette his power back, that power was enough for Neuvillette to turn the people of Fontaine's blood into "true blood", which means, they're now officially real humans and not just costumes of Oceanids, so now the Primordial Sea can no longer tear their "costumes" apart and dissolve them or turn them into Oceanids.
Yeah! Focalors know in the first that The prophecy can't be denied. so instead try to stop it, she let the prophecy happen but with in the way she want. She invited Neuvillete to become Ludex and live alongside the human for 500 year. and He will change his mind about human and love them so after he got power back after she died, He still love human and save them. cuz by his dragon power, He can turn people of Fontaine to Real human. Also, she plans to make him like Battery for Fontaine, so He can't just leave the city to do revenge on other Archons. Focalors are like the director of this Archon Quest, Everything happens like what she wants.
Furina is like "What do I do now"
Focalors is like "What do you mean? Now you can finally play the game."
