It's incredible how Ledger, who mostly acted in romantic movies, was able to portray the role of a psychopathic character so well and perfectly.

It's a joke. But nobody in that room laughed.
It's not like that. The correct way to drink a wine is to areate it (mix it with air also called as breathing) so that the flavours and aromas of the wines enhances. This is how wine connoisseur drink wine. Joker even though he was a joker was aware of this subtlety of wine drinking. Hence he swings his glass a little so as to let it mix with air.
See don't get fooled by jokers appearance or his mannerisms. He is well aware of all this.

Hmm, I dunno. I think evil is knowing the difference between right and wrong and choosing wrong. Jack Nicholson's Joker chooses wrong because it's funny to him. But I don't think Ledger's Joker chooses, because his whole thing is chaos and anarchy. Evil has its own ruthless selfless logic, and I can't say Ledger's Joker respects it.

@@doublec3 no 1992 was the first time he voiced Joker in Batman the animated series which also showed some dark stuff especially with Joker and Harley's relationship. The movie Batman beyond Return of The Joker was from the year 2000 and shows us how Joker tortured Robin ( Tim Drake) who was just a kid at the time and turned him mentally insane and Killing Joke is from 2016 i think , the comic is much older from 1988 but got adapted in an animated movie which has Joker shooting and paralyzing Gordon's daughter , taking pictures of her naked body in agony and presenting them to Gordon on big tv screens during a horrofic rollercoaster ride .
Mark Hamill knows the character better than anyone else, he played/ voiced him for 30 years in countless productions including the beloved Batman Arkham video games

The sheer genius of the Joker adapting his scar stories depending on who he's talking to... Gambol gets the 'abusive father' backstory - something Joker knew Gambol could probably relate to. And Rachel gets the 'lover' story. Almost a cautionary tale for her love story with Dent. How a broken heart can prompt a broken spirit. And the chaos that can follow.
The level of emotional manipulation is uncanny. Can't help but wonder what story he would have given Batman at the end...

@@appleman9985 That's a really cool idea! Never crossed my mind that Joker's "scar story" for Batman would be the truth. It would totally make sense, given Joker's obsession with Batman.
I always thought he would've made up a story where he tried to "do the right thing, but suffered for it". Something that would add to the notion he's been pushing on Batman throughout the film: that nobody really values "heroic actions", and that even the police will turn on Batman once his vigilantism is no longer of benefit them.
And how fitting for the immovable object vs unstoppable force that Batman cuts off Joker before he can get to it.
"I used to want to help people. Like you. There was this woman that was being mugged and I came in to save her. The man attacks me with the knife and tells me that you look scared. Here, have a smile. And he does this. Then I pull the knife from his hands and slice his throat. She flees in terror and she calls the police telling them I attacked her and killed him."
Why would you just assume that Gambol had an abusive alcoholic father or that Rachel could relate to the feeling of being dumped by your significant other despite going to extraordinary lengths for them? Everything about this scene is perfect. The way the camera circles Heath and Maggie, the music, the acting. A masterpiece in film from start to finish.
The dark knight trilogy is masterpiece of filmmaking
One thing most people didn't realize here is that Rachel knew who's the Batman. She also knew she had no chance surviving the fall from the building if Joker threw her. She still kept the secret and let Joker throw her. This gives her character a depth.
After realizing this when I think that she died later in the story, it breaks my heart even more.

Batman isn't a cool character in the TDK and TDKR. The villians, Harvey Dent, Alfred, Gordon, and Fox are all better than him.
If you rewatch the film consider that Joker knew Bruce Wayne was Batman the entire time then it actually kind of works and makes more sense. He wouldn't benefit by letting the mob know this.

I love the high quality of the dialogues in this film. I love how Rachel is not only a love interest who is represented weak or cowardly but intelligent and very courageous, compared to all the other people in the hall, shitting in their pants because there's the Joker. She did not hesitate to step forward despite all the fear he gives. I also love how the Joker is very quick-witted instead of being a complete mad man. Yes he's out of his mind actually, but he still used to be a normal person before he became Joker, so it's so reasonable that his actions are cleverly done. He knows how to get away from things, like grabbing Rachel while his men are distracting Batman and then faking he's going to shoot her with the gun but actually shooting towards the glass to break it and throwing her outside, so Batman can chase after her while Joker runs away. It would not be this awesome of a movie if Joker was not designed as a clever man. I'm not saying he is thinking before he does things, he's very random, but I think he used to be a very smart man in his past, who was exposed to wrong circumstances that got him mad, and right know he's just doing what he wants while his mind is empty but well working.

Fun fact: At 2:24, Maggie Gyllenhaal was actually looking towards the staff wondering if they were going to call cut because she was already extremely uncomfortable at that point. While Nolan and his staff could clearly see that she was uncomfortable, they continued rolling because they were capturing a genuinely afraid Maggie Gyllenhaal. She was actually quite upset once they finally did call for cut and needed to take a few minutes to detox.

Lots of focus on Ledger here for obvious reasons but Maggie Gyllenhaal's performance here is very good - the mixture of fear, panic, holding it together, and contempt
The fact that we have no idea about his origin in Nolan universe makes this villain even more scary and insane, he's just pure madness and anarchy, he just want the chaos and be the opposite of Batman.

What's interesting is that this line might be the only true fragment of his actual back story that we get in the entire movie (not the contradicting scar stories).. You can tell by his line delivery that there is some real animosity there.. It's not just for theatrics.
Yeah. But in all the contradicting story's there are some common threads....a messed up past and probably abuse of some kind
David Nordmeyer The common is that he has someone in his past (likely fake with Rachel could be partially true with the scar story he told Gamble) who he is conflicted about who made him turn out this way. Maybe his father gave him mental scars that made him so fucked up in personality and also his mindset. Whereas his wife gave him emotional scars that made him seemingly psychopathic and detached from the world hence why he's so damn maniacal. Both of these parts of his life might be the things that caused him to give himself scars instead of the opposite where they are a direct cause of his scars via abuse of some kind. Like for example his wife couldn't stand the sight of him from his scars to profess his love to her due to the mob carving her face. Hence why he stole the mobs money and killed most of the mobsters. As a way of explaining his hatred of the mobsters in general. His hatred for his father is expressed in this scene and also in the story he told gamble. That's why he told 2 scar stories. Both go hand in hand with each other for his past.

Heath ledger (rapist) originally committed suicide. Whining Batman fans had to beg higher authorities to alter the reason to OD'ed.

Could you imagine just being an extra in this scene and watching this performance?? Heath took being a villain to another level in this scene.
Ledger is obviously perfect but Maggie deserves some credit too. She only has two words, but she nails her facial and physical acting. You can tell Rachel is trying come off as brave and unphased, but she's actually terrified.
Funny thing is this is the first time she saw Heath in his makeup so she was genuinely terrified and uncomfortable

Let's face it: 95% of people would be crapping their pants in this situation, even bold men. Ledger's Joker is hands down one of the terrifying villains in cinema history, largely due to just how psychopathic he is. A lover of destruction, obsessed with savage behavior, and just evil to the core.
There’s something unsettling when you realize the Joker has multiple stories about his scars’ origins. It’s like he just wants to unsettle his victims in different ways, like jokes of his.

Nah in the comics it's the same. The joker says that he always remembers it differently.
He uses the victim most comom social history (like young black boys who were beaten by their drunk parents or the girl who lost it all, he tries to use the victim history to mess with their minds).

Fun Fact: this scene was 100% improvised by Heath himself, when she kept looking away from Heath as he was grabbing her head, that was her trying to figure out why he was doing that because it wasn’t in the script
The best thing about this scene is that Michael Caine actually had a line that he was supposed to say but he was actually so scared of Heath Ledger’s Joker that he forgot his line.

Hermiie i dont think the Jokers origin story has ever really been depicted in any form. It keeps changing. The lines in this movie are still very sad at times because they still might be true
big mo there’s the comic origin story from the killing joke which seems pretty well established to be true but I don’t like him having an origin, takes away the mystery of his character. The fact that he was able to pull off both Joker and broke back mountain makes him one of the greatest actors ever IMO. Two entirely different personalities played to perfection. Both have a strong masculine presence, but that's about all you can say is the same. The level of empathy portrayed in Ennis Del Mar compared to Joker is an unbelievable feat. This role killed him. He inhabited it too deeply and it was not who he was

I get the feeling that was entirely ad-libbed too. Ledger killed this role. Just saw Phoenix's portral and man he killed it too. Its really not fair to compare the 2 actors because their roles are essentially two totally different men. Arthur is a broken man with no hope; realizing his place of importance in his black world. He is the tale of "All it takes is one bad day." Ledger is a terrorist who's mind has been snapped in two for many years and just wants utter chaos. Arthur wanted to feel important, powerful significant. Ledger wanted to feel like his major powerful actions were more or less pointless.
Extra Spooky agreed. Both killed it. But different type of films and roles to determine which actor did better.

Extra Spooky What i like about phoenix’s joker is that it plays very well into how ledger’s joker couldve have developed. Arthur was a broken man that found killing to be unwinding because he saw the world as unworthy of life. Ledger’s joker had his mind set on trying to prove that people will just eat at each other when chaos erupts, probably cause of how wronged he was by society, and he wanted to prove to everyone the injustice in our every actions he (and arthur fleck) saw.
I feel like ledger’s joker is less an embodiment of chaos, and rather a carefully executed plan to introduce the chaos he had to go through to the world

Him spilling the champagne is genius because I think fits with his philsophy that he's not interested in material wealth or gain (he also burned money), but exists solely to incite chaos, and of course, to fight Batman.
He's driven by those things, and nothing else. He can't be bought, and the biggest irony of this movie is that Joker as a character is perhaps less corruptible than Batman.

At 2:20 when he says "I just want her to know that I don't care about the scars", it's incredible how Heath Ledger completely switches emotions between the first half and the second half of the sentence. It's a blink or you'll miss it moment, but when he says "I just want her to know...", you hear his voice almost trembling with sadness and sorrow, as if he truly was desperate to convince the made-up wife about still caring for her despite her scars. And as he says "...that I don't care about the scars", he is suddenly full of anger and rage.
How do you even understand that you can switch emotions mid-sentence like this? Whether it's conscious or subconscious, it's next level acting.
Just an incredible performance.

I LOVE how every single person's reactions to the Joker are 100% genuine. Nobody else is "acting" here. That's how awesome Heath Ledger was in this movie
I believe this scene was Maggie's first time seeing Heath in Joker makeup, and apparently when he first grabbed her face and she was looking off to the left, she was actually looking for the film crew to cut the scene because she was so frightened, but they kept rolling because it was such genuine reaction.
Joaquin Phoenix's Joker is aimed at more mature audiences than Ledger's Joker
This was the first time the entire cast saw Heath in the Joker makeup, so yeah it was genuine reaction instead of premeditated performance. Maggie Gyllenhaal was reportedly very intimidated and uncomfortable by Heath's performance as well.

Phoenix’s Joker uses a gun while Ledger’s Joker uses a knife. Both a product of the system and humanity that failed them, but Ledger’s Joker lost all faith and just wants to see the world burn while Phoenix’s Joker shows what can happen when you push a mentally unstable person too far. Two very different takes. Both are bloody brilliant who cares which is better. They’re both dam good.
The dynamic between these two once in a generation actors is sooo perfect!!
I know some people might have trouble taking Bale 100% seriously cause of the voice thing, but I honestly think he's one of few actors on the planet who could fully match the intensity and immersion Ledger brought to the table and not get intimidated or thrown off by it.
I could've watched at least 3 more movies with these guys going at it, but I know that would make this one slightly less magical than it is.
We and Nolan were truly lucky to get this combination of lead actors for this, forever grateful
