WHAT IS DIATOMACEOUS EARTH?
Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth are the fossilized remains of diatoms (diatoms are single-celled algae that have transparent cell walls made of silica. They’re found anywhere there is water such as in oceans, lakes, and rivers.
It is an odorless, very fine white/off-white powder that consists of 85% amorphous silica (naturally occurring trace mineral) and a number of other trace minerals such as calcium, magnesium, titanium dioxide, gallium, and sodium.
Whenever I look at it I’m reminded of the powdery-sugar like beaches on the West Coast of Florida. #ThatsJustMe
BENEFITS OF FOOD-GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH
Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is a natural cleanser & detoxifier for both dogs and humans because of its abrasive capabilities. They’re what causes pests to die and which clean our dog’s AND our human internal systems.
The abrasive diatoms create holes in the insects’ exoskeleton which cause them to loose their body fluids and eventually die.
IN MY PUP'S RAW DOG FOOD
I started adding a teaspoon of food-grade DE to Missy’s dinners (more on how much to feed below). It’s perfect to mix in with her raw food and she doesn’t mind it one bit.
I am all for implementing preventative health measures such as this detox/potential parasitic cleanse and like that it will help keep her healthy from the inside out.
Update 2021: My current pup Wally also gets some DE a few times per week in his raw dog food.
After reading about all of its health benefits I just had to start using it myself as well. I began adding 1/2 teaspoon to my banana smoothies.
ONLY FEED FOOD-GRADE DE (NOT the pool-grade kind)
Food-Grade means it’s fit for human & pet consumption.
It is really important to feed FOOD-GRADE Diatomaceous Earth only, and under no circumstances the industrial pool/fish tank-grade DE that is used for filtering purposes.
The latter has been chemically treated, is not biodegradable and very harmful when ingested. It consists of crystalline silica (unlike the amorphous silica in food-grade DE), which is classified as a lung carcinogen!
DON'T INHALE FOOD-GRADE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH
Inhaled DE can irritate the lungs, so when filling a glass jar for Missy’s & my personal usage, I scooped it out using a spoon rather than transferring it from the bag into the jar via means of pouring. I suppose another way to avoid breathing it in would be to wear a face mask.
HOW MUCH FOOD-GRADE DE TO FEED YOUR DOG
Diatomaceous.org recommends the following daily feeding guidelines:
1/2 teaspoon for small dogs and puppies (once they’re on solid food)
1 teaspoon for dogs weighing under 50 lbs
1 tablespoon for dogs weighing over 50 lbs

When I did my research on how much to use myself, I kept reading to start with 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of food-grade DE and to work your way up to 1 tablespoon per day. That's exactly what I've been doing!

It's the ONLY thing for serious ant problem if u have pets in the house. It's a miracle. We couldn't stop ants..tried EVERYTHING & was ready to call exterminator then I got out my DE
Borax or borac acid and sugar works amazing for ants 😊

Thanks Claire. Missy was my heart dog. I miss my sweet girl so much. Unfortunately I lost her to cancer after all in 2018. However, it was her first cancer diagnosis that prompted me to switch her (& her brother) to raw dog food. And I'm convinced that it helped her outlive her oncologist's life expectancy by almost 3 years!

Every thing I have read says to take on an empty stomach. I personally would not be adding it to food-
I have heard from dog experts say to mix into their food especially if this is just maintenance /preventative measures.

Diatomaceous earth should be consumed on an empty stomach, so best way is to mix a teaspoon in a glass of water and drink it. Take it a good hour prior to eating or two hours after eating for best effects. Mixing it in food or smoothly completely kills the effectiveness.
Totally true I take mine with water not that bad my dog gets it in coconut water I feed her an hour later !!

You are not suppose to use anything metal to mix diatomaceous use wooden spoons. Better to be safe and I love your pretty dog.

1.)Yes make sure you use a non metal scoop/mixing spoon when transferring your DE from bag or container to your cup, so never use a metal spoon when you stir the Diatomaceous Earth & water in cup, instead use a plastic or wood spoon, NEVER USE METAL. The metal will remove the negative ionic charge of the DE making it ineffective attaching to positively charged ions in your body.
2.)Diatomaceous earth particles also have a unique honeycomb structure. This honeycomb structure - similar to the one found in charcoal particles - attracts harmful heavy metals.Heavy metals are absorbed into the honeycomb structure through positive/negative attraction. Specifically, diatomaceous earth has a negative charge while heavy metals are positively charged. The diatomaceous earth attracts all of these particles, trapping them inside the honeycomb structure. The honeycomb structure prevents the particles from entering the body. Instead, heavy metals are passed out of your body naturally without being absorbed.
Essentially, diatomaceous earth works like a scrubbing tool in your gastrointestinal tract. It pushes toxins like heavy metals out of your body.

Hi, as far as I know, you can also feed it to cats.
You should never mix it in food !! Take it in water or coconut wateror what ever your like to drink , an hour before your or your dog has food !!

Ok say you have a infection on your skin could you mix it with non scented lotion an apply to the skin i mean you drink the stuff but would it kill the infection ?
Taking diatomaceous earth orally will ONLY kill intestinal worms 🐛 . If she said that she was taking that for a skin infection or for some other worm in her skin I must have been daydreaming when she said it. But if nothing else we know she doesn’t have intestinal worms!

U know what, dogs shake, humans breathe what they shake off their fur. They also breathe it in. It's like glass to lungs, human or dog.
@@beverlycrabtree5307 That's what stops me from trying to use it. It's not worth taking the chance of breathing that powder into my lungs, or having my pets breathe it into their lungs!! Nope. Ain't taking that chance!
I know this may be annoying but wear a face mask when using this stuff or hold you breathe.
It’s bad for your lungs to breathe it in. It’s also best to wear glasses or goggles. It’s hard on your eyes.
There have been studies of higher rates of lung cancer with people that breathe im silica (diatomacious earth) ...it is coming to light now that people who work with marble benchtops ...grindig /cutting etc are getting lung damage...its being called the new asbestos...so yes dont breathe this in...perfectly fine to eat :-)

Bentonite Clay is a no-no with metals, and l am now guessing they do crush it at the mining places (with wooden spoons!!) with metal but it is advised to put clay in the sun to activate it, and isn't DE the same? l want to know now, l know a specialist l can ask..

I haven't heard of that option but I would think that the benefits of DE only apply when you consume it.

I just bought some Harris food grade and it says not to consume . this is so confusing. Anybody know if Harris's will kill me...? lol

I BEEN USING METAL UTENSILS FOR A LONG TIME.NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS.BUT I WILL BRING THIS UP WITH MY Veterinarian,it Aluminum ,should never be used!!!!!! pet water,feeding dishes should never be ALUMINUM.. PLASTIC IS IDEA.
I never knew this but being that aluminum is so bad for us. I quit using deodorant with it in. I use a crystal deodorant stick

It's Bentonite Clay that you're NOT supposed to use with any metal(spoon or container). The clay absorbs metals and becomes less effective. I don't believe DE is affected the same way.
