Imagine not being able to communicate with loved ones to even tell them that you love them. He’s in a way, alone and that must be devastating

Unfortunately medicine is just not that far advanced yet, and while tongue transplants are being done, they wouldn't do much for him and his ability to speak. To quote an article I found: "In combination with the loss of the voluntary motor activity, this results in a severe obstruction to the patient’s articulation and ingestion of food. The aim of transplanting a donor’s tongue is to compensate for the deficit in volume.” In short, it's meant to fill the void in the mouth that would probably feel weird post-op and might be hard to cope with, but even if he got it he wouldn't be able to taste with the implant, or use fine enough movement with it in order to make all the proper pronunciations when speaking. Sounds with L's or T's for example just wouldn't be possible, try making those sounds yourself without moving your tongue, just not possible. Did I not say that it would not affect you or your life, however, if it came down to losing the ability to speak or losing my eyesight again then it can tell you that there would be no question about which I could choose. This makes me want to quit smoking. Like im not kidding. It really got these gears turning. Edit: I think its amazing how many random people encourage me to Live a longer life. 👌. Will try to quit.
DeenanTheKemon I you should really try, my Mum used to smoke until she got pregnant with me and when she stopped she realised how shit it made her feel all the time. Better to just not do it, cheaper too lol
hey buddy this isnt a joke or spam i used to smoke for 3 years, 2 pack a day (minimum) marlboro reds i even though 3 years doesnt seem like that much even a month is enough to fully addict you, any way what really helped me was a book by Allen Carr its called the easy way, i didnt actually read the book i downloaded the audiobook on my phone and listend to it every time i had a chance guess what it actually worked it wasnt hard at all at the end of it i was like "huh guess im not a smoker any more" and never felt like smoking although i missed the blowing smoke part so after about 2 years of not smoking i picked up a vape now i vape 0nic juice just for the hell of it but still after watching this i thinking about quiting vaping aswell
Ratkobom i have been addicted to multiple intoxicants for several years. Cigarettes are something i really need to kick. But I have an entire list unfortunately. Ill be lucky to see 65. But i appreciate the wisdon words man and im glad you found a way to keep living. Stay smoke free for those of us who cant
DeenanTheKemon I: I believe in you! You just have to find the reason why you want to quit smoking/ other addictions and push it out of your mind and into your actions. Maybe when you feel like a cigarette, pick up a journal and write a reason you want to quit. I hope the very best for you!
You don't know what you have until you lose it. It's something I like to live by and it makes the grief of loss a lot less painful. I think the most important thing anybody can do is to spend as much time with their family as they can. Life isn't guaranteed, and you could wake up one day to the news that you've lost a family member. Enjoy every last second and build the best memories you can. You don't want to wait until it's too late and then think to yourself "I could have" or "I should have." Your parents might not be around for your entire life, but your memories with them definitely will, and to me that's what truly matters.
“In 6 days” *looks at publish date, a week ago* “Darn.” Edit: This is a joke, you idiots. The video is only 11 minutes long, so yes I watched the whole thing. K? This channel almost always does a before/after, so obviously they followed his story after he had the surgery.
Gamer Lycan i support his family yes but i -dislike- the fact that he lost his voice if I -like- the video its like saying "hey I -like- the fact that he lost his voice" thats my point of view though, you have yours, I have mine
Not true. Without a tongue you would only be able to smell. Taste doesn't rely on smell, it's augmented by it. Smell and taste merge into one. You only really taste things until you've swallowed anyway, hold it in your mouth with or without closing your nose, you don't taste it as much as after you swallow it. Some foods might rely on smell more than taste or vice versa. You can taste drinks even though most of them don't have a smell (except hot ones and alcohol).
UB3RFR3NZY The foods smell comes loose when it gets wet in your mouth and rises up in your nose. When your nose is blocked from breathing you cant taste Anything besides salty, sweet or bitter. Thats how they learned it to me.
Are we sure he's dead? The first guy you see on a Google search is Midwestern, born in IN, died in MI. Kinda looks like him but this guy sounds like a Mainer, has Patriots stuff on and the obituary lists no wife although he's married here. If he is dead my condolences to his family but I don't think he is.
Bellches100 he has a completely different nose in that picture, and like Andy said, no mention of his wife. It might be him, or a guy with the same name.
@Bellches100 I don't think it's the same guy- the obituary on google is from the midwest. This man's from MA, he says in the video that he went to a doctor "here in Brockton", and there was a story run on him by VABoston on their Facebook page (he's a vet). If he has passed may he rest in peace, but I don't believe he has.
DeMalseRakkers by not being braindead most people can tell this is an emotionally manipulative piece and that it is using this man's tragedy to further their own goals
my dad had his tongue and larynx removed last month due to throat cancer. that was probably one of the most shocking news i’ve heard in my entire life and he knew about it but didn’t decide to tell me until he had it removed.
Ethan C emails... texting... PM’s... he could’ve hand written a letter. Shit, he could’ve had it written on a cake sent to their house. It’s 2018. There’s more options than face-to-face conversations or phone calls.
Chaos, because everybody types exactly like that, it’s completely normal. Did you even think about it? Who the fuck types in a comedically sarcastic way like that normally?
WOW, you never know what life is going to throw at you. This man is an amazing example of resilience and staying strong in difficult times, I hope his spirit stays happy and fulfilled and that he grows from this and doesn't become overwhelmed or too sad. Good people go through really hard things, and it's not fair but the way you DEAL with it makes such a big difference. Just watching this was so inspiring, he dealt with it so gracefully, he didn't pretend nothing was wrong - but he didn't let it get to him. It inspired me to be grateful for everything I have, and to stay strong in the face of hardship.
My dad had the same operation total glossectomy due to cancer at the base of tounge. It's almost been a year (Oct) since his operation he is back at work full time he can talk but cannot swallow/eat which has been difficult. I hope technology advances so that one day he can get a new tongue.
G Speezy: Please tell him about a formula called Liquid Hope. It's covered by Medicaid and often by private insurance as well! It's a plant-based formula, not synthetic.
Don't be a moron. A tongue prosthetic only works if you lose like half you're tongue for example. There has to be a decent amount of tongue to attack the prosthetic to. You must be a child or just plain stupid.
sks djd Marky Mark Dog God Okay, all 3 of you frankly ignorant and pessimistic commenters need to do some Googling, because yes, there is a tongue prosthetic invented by the Japanese as Lucid NightLight mentioned that WILL work with someone who has had MOST of their tongue removed. It's attached to the back of the teeth and pushed by the small remaining bit of tongue that is there. " Kozaki was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2014 and has since had most of his tongue, jaw bones, and pharynx removed." www.rt.com/news/330913-artificial-tongue-prosthesis-cancer/
Billy Mitchell You think you’re cool for acting like a complete idiot. Instead, you come off as a douchebag who can’t fully understand human compassion. That must be terrible for you.
unreal. the positivity in that family is through the roof. god bless you guys. this video is proof that we take the smallest of things for granted. enjoy every day as your last
Same. The guy on the phone lost his whole tongue and was able to speak just fine somehow! So I don't see why Lonnie wouldn't be able to. Maybe he needs to heal first...because they didn't remove his vocal chords so he should still be able to make sounds
In order to create consonants, you need the tongue for what I believe is the majority of consonants in the English languages inventory. The thing that he'll actually be able to produce without practice (which I'm assuming in necessary to speak again, hearing from the man on the phone who had 100% of his tongue cut off) is vowels.
This touched my heart but also kicked it. The amount of love in his family is admirable. Glad he had that support system cuz losing your voice indefinitely has got to hurt emotionally.
Nano poison ik because most people no about the bbc we would of raised loads of money and maybe Enough for a new tongue but I don’t no how that sort of stuff works
Some people don't realize that the thumbs up or down buttons are not a reflection of their emotions. Some people saw this and thought "poor guy. I'm sad for him. Thumbs down." But they are not giving the disease a thumbs down. They are giving the video and all those who worked to make and upload it a thumbs down. In short, some people are kinda dumb.
“Is guitar players” wow you’re so unique because you play an instrument! 👍👍👍 good job at doing something over 3 quarters of the world does! 😎 you’re 👏a👏cool👏ցuy👏
I’ve never even thought about how your voice really is part of who you are, and we really do take it for granted. Your voice is as unique as you. I hope this man and his family, including his doggo and his umbrella cockatoo birb, are all doing well.
jesus christ first comments of this video - I agree with some points but I don't get why you would be subscribed to a channel which you hate (I presume he's subscribed)
SxKushxS so thats proof BBC have trolls yet your still looking for evidence on Skripal, Syria and russian bots? where's your evidence? you have nothing...
After watching this many people like me start to understand how important tongue is. After removing tongue you loose not only ability to speak, but also ability to swallow, eat. God, that's terrible. I hope in near future new technology will provide people like Lonnie possibility to have a new tongue which will be able to restore that abilities. Not so long ago noone would even belive in face transplantation and today it's possible, medicine is going forward. Stay well Lonnie, you are a great man. Btw. nice amps you got there, I play guitar too!
I don't know about that so I won't argue with you on that, but I was just following comment of guy with nickname G Speezy, you can find that comment somewhere here.
@@mariuszw9665 It's surprising how many can actually taste the food too. It shows that you don't just have taste buds on your tongue. I know a man like Lonnie, and he even learnt to speak again. For someone with no tongue, and no voice box, he sounds amazing!
The guy that called him that had no tounge was an angel and an encouraging blessing. The man facing this surgery seems like a sweet man and it is apparent that his family loves him. That speaking device is great! Thank you for posting as I pray that it will help others that are facing the same situation. And I hope that he will eventually get his voice back if it is possible 🙏✌

Ben Medrek it would suck mostly because you can eat solid food but you could still talk. Not sure why this man portrays he cant he most definitely can just much harder and sounds rough.
BalthazarTheGreat *But he won’t be able to pronounce much consonants, sure he could pronounce a, e, é, i, o, u and k but other than that it would be just too difficult*

sweet, salt, bitter, sour its gone. But he can still feel the flavour bc that's behind the nose. still, complete shit situation.

You should quit smoking. Unless you want to get cancer
DeenanTheKemon I: I believe in you! You just have to find the reason why you want to quit smoking/ other addictions and push it out of your mind and into your actions. Maybe when you feel like a cigarette, pick up a journal and write a reason you want to quit. I hope the very best for you!
What a cozy looking house. A little too cluttered but it shows personality.
Nada Dealer i think the focus is on the operation and not the house he lives in
James Reynolds
Don’t really care what the focus is. I like the house.
Shut up Nada
Simeon Taylor
Guess I’m not allowed to compliment a house.
I can tell by his house and the people in the video, that this guy and his family is just like my family.
Henry Black these are some wonderful true words

Not tasting food is the worst part I feel terrible. That would ruin my life.
You taste food with your nose
Im pretty sure you cant after a glossectomy lol
You taste food with your nose have you ever had a cold and stuffed nose then you can’t taste for shit? 70% of taste is your nose
His wife is an angel. So supportive and loving. Everyone should have a partner like that.

That is a different Lonnie on google. Neither of his sons are listed as surviving him nor is his wife.
@Bellches100 Not the same guy. I already did. Are you from the Midwest? They don't sound like this Lonnie.

Awwww Lonnie. Rest in Peace dear man. I miss seeing your posts. You fought a bloody hard battle.
This just shows not to take anything for granted and treasure what you have you never know when things could change
Sirtomb Very true....
The guy on the phone who was talking with no toung spoke so well and good luck for the future
My dad had the same operation total glossectomy due to cancer at the base of tounge. It's almost been a year (Oct) since his operation he is back at work full time he can talk but cannot swallow/eat which has been difficult. I hope technology advances so that one day he can get a new tongue.
@Brandon Foster he has a feeding tube and gets all his nutrients through a formula called osmolite
G Speezy: Please tell him about a formula called Liquid Hope. It's covered by Medicaid and often by private insurance as well! It's a plant-based formula, not synthetic.
How does he process the saliva then? Im just curious, where does it go? 😯 God bless
God bless your father
Tom Cavrot no but you need to swallow the excess saliva.... and if he can’t swallow then?
Rest in Paradise Lonnie ❤
I love how he clapped after hearing himself again, so cute!
He died
I feel so sorry for him. I really hope he might be able to get a tongue prosthetic one day if he so desires.
and you know how? technology advances every single day
Lolkhhedaa
Calm down
Lolkhhedaa dude a prosthetic tongue WON'T work lol you know how flexible it woukd have to be? and how the fuck would he even control it?
God bless him

What would happen if he tried to talk? Will it slur, not make noise at all, or what???? I wanna know.
Same. The guy on the phone lost his whole tongue and was able to speak just fine somehow! So I don't see why Lonnie wouldn't be able to. Maybe he needs to heal first...because they didn't remove his vocal chords so he should still be able to make sounds
probably takes years of practice and a lot of effort to talk without the tongue, keep in mind he had the surgery 25 years ago
In order to create consonants, you need the tongue for what I believe is the majority of consonants in the English languages inventory. The thing that he'll actually be able to produce without practice (which I'm assuming in necessary to speak again, hearing from the man on the phone who had 100% of his tongue cut off) is vowels.
Lexi pretty sure that he also had a technological device

After watching this many people like me start to understand how important tongue is. After removing tongue you loose not only ability to speak, but also ability to swallow, eat. God, that's terrible. I hope in near future new technology will provide people like Lonnie possibility to have a new tongue which will be able to restore that abilities. Not so long ago noone would even belive in face transplantation and today it's possible, medicine is going forward. Stay well Lonnie, you are a great man. Btw. nice amps you got there, I play guitar too!
you dont lose the ability to swallow or eat, u just have to eat liquidy food
