When I save the seeds I sow from the ones that are the biggest, longest and sweetest of them all. You can save the seeds and eat the carrots at the same time as long as you save the tops and root them in moist soil. :)

SDD525 indeed they do! Great tip! .. and really.. lettuce seeds.. do not do well long term..even in the best of conditions...climate controlled and oxygen free. I've tried this with several varieties..over the years..and lettuce just doesnt seem to last..so.. point being.. grow enough each season...to collect seeds for next planting..you'll have the best results.

Yes now you're talking my language. I have so many annuals that basically self seed. I normally keep 1 or 2 plants and let them go to seed.
Parsley and other herbs I let a few of them just do their thing.
With things like Chard I pick the reddest and yellowest plant to let set seed.
With broccolli I normally pick one with good growth structure that re fruits after picking.
The Warrigal greens (sorry, I don't know what you'd call them or even if you have them) you can harvest and they still reseed themselves.
All my vegetables are heirloom varieties that do well in the local soil or for some, the soil I add to my raised beds.
But yes this is really important that people save at least a few seeds and don't just plant whatever the big stores stock.
Every season I try and source a couple of different varieties and see how they grow - the successful ones I'll collect seeds from.
    Great video John.

I dub this my favorite video I've watched of yours so far. It's the best, kind of deep. We're like-minded thinkers, you hit on a lot of good points about how and why to do all of this. Maybe if people started growing their own food again things would change a bit for the better from an economic standpoint. I'd be ok with Big Ag dealing with the direct public less often.

Just a tip - in my area the season isn’t long enough to grow a carrot and let it go to seed in one year. I pull them, put them in an extra refrigerator crisper drawer and replant the entire carrot the following Spring. Can’t leave them in the ground because of rodents and freezing issues

    Migardener has theses seeds .
It's called black nebula and is not the same as a purple carrot bought in the store.
They bleed like beets , and the formation is irregular. I tried them and was pleasantly surprised.
They have a lot of outer tiny hair roots . I just cleaned them under water with s scrub brush and ate the whole thing un peeled. Delicious.

I think she is suggesting you replant the eaten root to then grow for seeds... not another root. This is actually a known strategy so that you get a root AND seeds. So, Andrea, yes, you can absolutely do that.

so if you're suggesting we don't eat black carrots, what's better to do with them then-
just lick and suck on them?

“You shove them down the throat without chewing actually! Chewing reduces nutrients by .00000257% you might as well grab a handful of dirt wash it down with that to help you poop better! Look at my smooth skin!”

My favorite way to eat them is to juice them, and then rejuice the pulp with carrot juice.

So sorry, John...relationships can be hard. Maybe you'll have some luck at a vegan potluck (do they still have those in Las Vegas?).

Aww, that's too bad. I liked Lauren, she was cute. It's a shame she didn't stick around for the long haul.

I also destroyed my melons dammit. Even after your video xD I think I watered them too little when it was really hot. Was cool having them on the balcony during the summer though, looked good :-)

Don't feel bad; you're not alone! I don't know where you're gardening, but I'm in central Texas and I gave up trying to grow (a LOT of things, but especially) melons in the brutal summer heat. First year, I though I didn't water them enough and the next year, too much! Either way, they grew beautifully... to a point! But once the sun got to be too much for them, they split open! Both years, soooo.... I didn't try this year, but once I get some kind of overhead cover, I'm gonna' try again!

John has over half a million loyal followers; he can afford to be picky if he wants! If he was my son, I'd be glad he wasn't rushing into something that may not be right for the long haul! As for the REST of the accusations.... pure hateful BS!
