    I'm a retired vet, in a wheelchair. Thought all was lost when I came home. Went thru a few years of rehab then home. Alone and dealing with this new life. So I started growing plants in containers and 3 years I now I have all kinds of raised beds and benches. Raised beds make it possible. Mine are not neat like those metals but I use a lot of scrap materials, road side scraps and rejects from Home Depot, etc.
    I would have died if not for gardening, welding and wood works. I build Christmas silhouette figures out of rebar steel and all kinds of bird nest for my huge bird feeding stations. I'm good for now, a better place

      I had someone tell me that my kitchen and garden was 'overgrown'. I said that my kitchen produced all of my chillis and most of my herbs so they're fresh every time I cook. My garden is small, but produces a lot of food, and I have to point out that just about everything growing there can be eaten, and I still have a small pond and various other wildlife-friendly habitats to encourage pollination and diversity. My sister said if I wanted to sell my place my garden would put people off. Perhaps a fair point, but I'll figure that out when I have to.

      Then you wouldn’t be as dependent on the system underpinned by the central banks...and historically, that makes you a target. They get very cranky when people don’t need them. Just ask any previously self-sufficient (and now war-torn) country that once had free or low-cost electricity, clean water and 0% interest loans, they’ll tell you. School isn’t about education, they even said so when they set up forced national education. They want “a nation of workers, not a nation of thinkers”. Thinkers are creative and self-sufficient. So it’s about indoctrination and creating slaves that don’t know they’re slaves. Slavery didn’t go anywhere. It got repackaged.

    You can cut the tops off with a small top part of the carrot attached and replant them and you get your carrot harvest, plus a heck of a lot of seeds from the replanted tops. Don't expect carrot root to regrow from the replanted tops because it will never happen, just be glad it provided you with carrot leafy to feed your pet rabbits and some free seeds. : )

    The competition carrots are grown in a similar deep tub by the veg show enthusiasts. The reason carrots became any colour as long as it's orange is due to the Dutch who have for centuries been very clever at plant breeding. They felt it important to flatter their royal family the House of Orange. So we have many varieties all coloured orange. The good thing is 2units of carotin = 1 unit of vitamin A. My chickens would be dancing up and down saying " Give us the carrot tops, then you can have what's left when it comes out the other end!"

    Did you thin the crop a bit when they came up? I love the spiral technique!! I will use that! Brilliant! I love the purple carrots the best to eat they are sweeter I think.

    Great video, very informative. 👍 Lovely harvest! The variety and colors are so pretty. 🤗 I wanted to suggest that the carrot tops make an excellent green juice, and can also be dried and used in recipes that call for parsley, as the taste is similar. I like to save what’s edible as much as I can make use of it, so I thought I’d share these ideas. 🥕

    Following your channel from Montreal Canada. First time ever this year trying to grow carrots in 5 gallons on our patio. We live downtown and have limited space so we are doing the best with what we have. We sowed them a few days ago and waiting to see them germinate. Watching everything that has to do with carrots. Love your channel.

    Fab carrot harvest, Mark. Though I wouldn't leave saving seed until the very last bit of original seed. Never know when Mother Nature will deal out a rubbish year and you end up losing the crop you were counting on for future seed.

    Carrots are biennial. If they are going to seed the first year they are stressed.... high heat and humidity will do that.

      Jennifer Dozar they like sandy soil. There is a you tube vid of a guy that grows them in barrels of sand and punches perfect holes with tubes and puts carrot seedlings in the hole like plugs. All the carrots he gets are perfect and all exactly the same.

      I don't make them Stephen they come flat packed and I put them together. These beds are common in Australia and were born out of our love for colorbond steel and galvanised water tanks. People started using their old water tanks as raised garden beds and then companies began to make them purpose built for gardening. Basically, I use any organic fill in the base and then topsoil + compost on top. I've written an article about the medium I use in raised beds like this if you would like more info. www.selfsufficientme.com/fruit-vegetables/how-much-drainage-and-soil-do-i-need-in-a-raised-garden-bed Thank you :)

    Mark Where do you get your Raised Garden Beds? I don't live to far from you, cant seem to find them at that height.

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  7 років тому +2

      Mate, this one in particular is made by Aestivo and I got it from eBay bit.ly/2huzWtM but they are sold out unfortunately. If you search online for round raised garden bed you'll see them sold and custom made by several companies but they are usually expensive! Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $150 for a 1m x 800mm (diametre x height) round bed. It could be better value to buy a rectangle or oval bed if you can't find the round ones for a good price. Best of luck! BTW, love your avatar :)
