I have one that is not powering on. When I plug it, the apple logo appears for a brief second. What do you suggest I do to get it up and running again?
@@cwmoriarty Unfortunately, most modern devices require somewhat functional battery, even when running off AC. Now, the battery might be completely depleted (close to zero max capacity), that would work. But no battery, or damaged battery (e.g., short on BMS) usually prevents running off mains...
@@cwmoriartyyou can run it through power supply, i used alligator clips to just try to run it and test before i bought new batteries. It was three 1st gen ipads from my customer btw 😉

It is most likely the battery. If you're familiar with the device, and it used to work fine and then haven't been used in a while, then it is almost guaranteed that it is just a battery issue. Otherwise, it could be something else, but the chances of that are fairly low. Another issue of concern would be just a dead screen, but this is not a case here as you would see a spike in current on boot up / charging. Right now, it is not charging the battery (based on amperage), this is usually a telltale sign of the dead battery.
Yeah, unfortunately these are pretty fragile. Especially if you try to pry, and corners in particular. Metal/plastic pieces can take quite a bit of force, but glass parts can only bend very little, and then shatter :(

Touch screen not working (assuming it worked before) is most likely digitizer cable not connected properly. Check it out, digitizer cable is a flat ribbon cable on the left side of the mainboard (if looking top side with screen removed), it needs to be fully inserted into the socket (all the way to the white line on the ribbon) and then latched up in the socket. If it is not fully inserted/latched, touch won't work on all or parts of the screen. . As to why it looks like factory reset, I am not sure. Battery replacement alone shouldn't reset anything, unless you have done something else as well.

Assuming you don't have your account locked, you can try iPad reset, network settings reset (then connect to WiFi) or you can try to activate via iTunes. Normally, one of these methods should work. If it is not your iPad (e.g. bought second-hand) that you don't know Apple ID for, then it is a different story.
It's unlikely to be worth much, even at sentimental value :) You can try to find someone local to help you out if for some reason you _really_ want 1st gen to be repaired...
Good video. Batteries should be more easily changed, like they used to be. If there the ability to roll back the os on ipad 1 this might be worth doing. Every ipad i have owned ran great until installing the last update issued by apple. I am still running a Linux running on a 2011 computer. runs great. internet still works great. FAPPLE.
TIP= I made a tool that slides down with a piece that then gets behind each clip and you slide sideways to pop it inwards and release from outside case. I then keep all the right hand side clips and remove the top and bottom ones and use only 2 on left side to lock it into place ready for easy removal next time in just 1 min. I also add thin pieces of double sided tape to pad the sides out so it clips into place with no movement. Leave the top side unsticky so the screen is only resting on tape and not stuck to it for easy removal.
This sounds like a solid approach. Whether it is clips or glue, the most difficult time to open is the very first one. It is as if manufacturers don't want you to do that... ;)
While attempting to repeat all this I broke the motherboard connector though I didn’t apply too much pressure I think. So to anybody considering DIY think twice

I don't have a link anymore, it was quite a while ago. But you usually can find these on AliExpress (very cheap, but slow delivery), or on eBay if you're in North America (not cheap on per unit basis, but not a huge deal if you only do a single device and want faster delivery).
As much as I agree with the sentiment, Apple is not unique in this approach, all manufacturers are just as bad. Funny enough, these older generation devices are in fact quite a bit better from the repair perspective as nowadays they just pump up hardcore adhesive everywhere. At least here screen is still just clipped in...

I'm used to Nokia phones where changing a battery takes a few seconds and requires zero technical skills! I have the same problem with a first gen iPad. Sadly I left it for too long without charging and it's in absolutely prime condition otherwise. I'm leaning towards trying to fix it myself instead of buying a new battery and potentially taking it to a shop, as for me it will not really make a difference if it holds a charge for very long. I saw your other video on the battery revival. Do you know if I can just cut an old Nokia charger and get around 5V? Or does it have to be USB so that the voltage is low enough and I will not fry the battery? I was thinking of opening the iPad just enough to disconnect all relevant connectors, and simply try to jump start the battery while it's still there in the casing, largely intact. I saw someone do this online. I was actually hopeful that my iPad would eventually start charging, had it connected for 2-3 days in a warm room and even tried charging it on a heating element with a towel underneath, but alas, it's the never ending loop of the device trying a restart and never starting to actually charge. Don't know about your Nokia charger, but all USB chargers provide 5V, downvoltage for lithium charging happens in the device circuitry. The charger should have voltage/amperage specs on the brick, but the chances are it is 5V. Now, I would NOT recommend boosting lithium batteries with 5V power supplies (e.g. cut out USB ones). People have done it, but it is definitely NOT SAFE, most lithium batteries expect 4.2V charging MAX. It doesn't sound like a big difference, but it is, charging with 5V you have a decent chance of burning/exploding the battery, certainly don't do it in-device. Find/jerry rig some other power source that is about 3.5-4.2V - regulated power supply is the best, but you can use another lithium cell like 18650 (second best), or some combination of lower voltage batteries or a simple circuit. Don't go above 4.2V for any meaningful period of time. Now, you have tried all the non-intrusive ways of kick starting the battery, and unfortunately it didn't work. If you're planning to open it up, the most of the work will be detaching the screen, and this will have to be done in any case. If you're doing that, might as well go all the way. If you're not replacing the battery, you don't need to cut the glue under the battery (that's a bear to remove), you can try to jump start while it is still glued, but disconnect it from the mainboard. And if this still doesn't work, you may consider replacing the battery as you would have it open anyway, these batteries are not that expensive (but still might not be worth it, depends).

For older devices this usually means that battery is dead and needs to be replaced.

I don't use Apple devices, so wouldn't have first-hand experience, but I believe there are ways to downgrade OS on iPad 1. Try searching for RedSn0w.

Classic Apple. The one part that will need to be replaced during the device's lifespan, is the very last thing to remove on the internals.
