- Before attempting this repair, try charging your iPad with a known good cable, wall adapter and wall outlet for a couple days. Your iPad may just need more time to recharge. (Especially if you have a wifi model, A1219) If that doesn’t work, this video may help you out!
*** Lithium-ion batteries such as the ones used in iPads can be dangerous, PLEASE PROCEED CAUTIOUSLY AND AT YOUR OWN RISK IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS REPAIR. There is a possibility it may catch fire, I recommend performing this repair away from any flammable materials and that you have something to extinguish fires nearby. I am not responsible for any damage that could occur to your iPad or other personal property during the repair process. ***
If you've got a first generation iPad (model A1219 or A1337) that won't power on, it's very likely the battery has dropped below the minimum voltage required to charge. This tutorial shows how to bring a first generation iPad back to life for free.
After successfully recharging the battery, charge your iPad up to 100%, unplug it and begin charging it again. Repeat until the battery remains at 100% after you unplug it and start charging it again.
I recommend following iFixit's guide for the opening procedure
for Wi-Fi only models (A1219):
www.ifixit.com...
for Wi-Fi + Cellular models (A1337):
www.ifixit.com...
This recharging process may also work on other lithium-ion batteries, I have only attempted it on iPads, so please be careful.

Thank you! I had an old iPad 1st gen that wouldnt start that I wanted to get some old information off of. I couldn't take out the screws, so I rolled the dice and taped leads to the negative an positive just like in your video but without disconnecting any of the electronics. When I first tested the battery it was at .005 volts... dead dead... I hooked it up for 10 minutes and it brought the battery to 3.6 volts... I then disconnected the taped wires, reconnected all the ribbon cables, and plugged in the proper charger... it started right up! thank you so much!!!
I had a 10th gen iPad ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.
I have a 1st Gen iPad that’s been dead for a while now. I now have 2 other iPads, but still gonna try this to make the original work. Thanks a bunch, Liam!!!
Good luck, I hope it goes well!
I have managed to get to connecting the wires to the battery and I am not sure if it will blow up or not, I even managed to open it up with a shattered screen without any more damage. Good job and thank you😊
Thanks for this video! I bought a 3$ broken iPad and this fixed it, thx so much mate
Thanks, invaluable info that brought back my 1st Gen iPad today (if only it were possible to run apps on it in 2022). One comment is that connecting a 5-volt charger to a 3.7v Li-ion cell can easily destroy the battery, since they are only designed to charge up to 4.2v. It probably worked OK for you because a few hours at 1A wasn't enough to get above 4.2v, but if you had left it connected that way for much longer, it would go over-voltage (which according to my understanding would be bad). I modified the procedure a bit to use a DC power supply to charge at a maximum voltage of 4.2v and a maximum current of 600mA. After maybe 3 hours of that it was up to around 4.1v, so I put it back together and connected to a normal charger. That was enough to get the battery charge screen, it booted maybe half an hour later at something like 5%
Glad to hear it helped! I know the original method’s not ideal, but it was the best I could do without a DC power supply. I’ll have to look in to one eventually.
@@Batteryfixer Now the dreadful waiting process begins lol. Currently 5 minutes in and can’t wait for it to work
It is possible to run apps on it. Jailbreak it using 3utools, which should install Cydia to the iPad, and then install tweaks and stuff and then install IPA files of apps that you want to download on the iPad.
I was glad to view this video, and almost managed to revive my old ipad 2. Can I make a couple of suggestions ? Show more closer views and details on how to disconnect the small and fragile connectors, ( I broke one…) and go slower when showing how to reassemble. Thanks.
Dude YOU ROCK !!!!!! .. I followed this to the exact video instructions .. IT WORKED ! .. only thing I would ask you about which I did anyways is to cut holes on the other side of the battery pair and test that side too.. Only thing I did differently is put the LIPO charger onto it for about 30 seconds to get it up to 2+ volts.. ((yeah I used my ONYX245 LIPO charger on NIMH setting)). then connected everything back like you said and let the regular charging go for a few hours.. worked like a charm .. Thanks Man !
Checking both sides never hurts! Glad to help out.
Thanks this brings my dead Ipad back to life.❤.
Hi Liam, Great video. I had the same problem with mine. I tried a tick I used with old batteries when I was a kid. This is not the right way, so you are on your own and I am not responsible for any loss or damage. I left my iPad indoors in the sun for 30mins. I then let it cool off and plugged it into a charger. It gave the battery enough charge to turn on with 1% life left. I was happy I didnt have to take it apart because I am not as gentle as you :) your video was going to be my next move.
Can you explain why that worked for you Faisal?
بالله يافيصل اشرحلي اذا سمحت كيف سويت الطريقة بالتفصيل بعد اذنك
I would love to know what the sun has to do with anything since we are advised to keep it out of the sun? Did you mean to soften the glue with heat?
@@ooohlaa13the battery might be extremely cool so heating it with a hairdryer
From all the searching this is 1 of the best videos ever I saw on fixing the dead battery very neat and clear n reliable chill to hear too not messy too I give u credits for that 👍🏻💙
This helped me determine which side was positive and negative in my totally dead batteries. Thanks!
Glad to help!
did all night still same logo flash every 6 seconds so might grab multimeter from boat and check voltages
Thank you
I fixed it. I have a second malfunction. The screen has lines. Is it a flash or gauze problem?
You’re welcome! The LCD or LCD cable may be damaged. Check for damage on the cable and board connector. If there isn’t any, it’s most likely an issue with the lcd itself and it will need to be replaced
thanks for all the help, i might come back to this later because i was trying to charge mine with FireWire 400 lol, if it still doesn't charge, i'll remember this video.
NICE! My son has an old Ipad Air 2 that was 100% working and charging then one day the screen just turned black all of a sudden. I tried hard reset several times with and without being plugged. Unfortunately still no signs of life at all. I was just thinking of replacing the battery since it's not much, but I'm hesitant because my gut says it's not the battery and probably more like a software issue. I'd appreciate any help from you or anyone pls.
Hi dear it's a great videobut I am having an issue, I allowed all the instructions and after I assemble it and plug the changer nothing didn't show up the screen was dark, and I was wondering what to do, no logo nothing shout I wait for it to change or.?
Sometimes using apple’s usbc 30w and an adapter will make it boot up.
Does this work also when it trys to power on on connector? One is just flickering when plugged in and one shows the apple logo for 6 Seconds before dying.....
*A MUCH EASIER TRICK*
Just heat up the back with a hair dryer for a few seconds depends on how hot the hair drawer is and then try charging.
*this heating trick worked for me*
Thanks this worked for me. My iPad 1 is Officially Fixed!
I don’t think I can do this without breaking the screen 😞
If your original ipad is boot looping on the charger, try getting it onto dfu mode and leave it pligged into a computer or charger that way for a couple hours and then attempt a normal boot
Bro the screen on my ipad 1st gen popped off for some reason when i found it this year i dropped it like 10 or 9 years ago but the screen didnt pop off yet can you help me out?
Do you have a bigger picture to check what are the exact pins to measure battery voltage from connector?
hi mate, why simply charge it for long time not working, but must charge the battery directly?
Thanks for a great video
Please I have a question I have a battery like it that gives a bell in plus and minus are they connected together
or not working thank you
Glad you liked it! I’m not entirely sure I understand, but the batteries in the iPad are both connected together, so charging one cell should charge both.
I just used this trick to repair an old ipad. But instead of hacking an old usb cable i hooked up a lithium ion battery charger to the exposed terminals
I didn’t think this would bring my iPad back to life. Sadly the touchscreen doesn’t work anymore. Maybe because u broke that clip thing on one of those cables. Otherwise great video. I’m glad I found it. Thanks
Aw, sorry to hear about the touchscreen not working. have you referenced the guide on ifixit? Some can be difficult to reseat and it might just need an adjustment www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPad+Wi-Fi+Front+Panel+Assembly+Replacement/4174
@@Batteryfixer i've tries to reconnect it but it still didn't work. I think I'll buy a new digitizer but they're very difficult to find. I luckily found one and I hope it'll work again
I'm not sure if this is what I need to do. After 2years of solid use (before I only used it sporadically) , my 1st Gen iPad mini had a hard time with the connection from the power cord. I bought a new cord, (after market was all I could find) and after a couple months I'm having a harder time charging. For a short time I could wiggle the connection a bit and carefully leave it undisturbed until charged. Now I jiggle it around for 10 minutes and get a flash of the charging indicator, then nothing. Maybe I just need to replace that 30 pin connector? I use the ipad every night and charge it back up every night usually when it's from 12-25% or so percent. So it's not from discharging too much. This is my evening TV as we no longer have any kind of TV service. My only relax time and we use it for taking pictures.
From what I can tell, it sounds like it could be one of two things.
The easiest to check for is if there’s anything in the port preventing it from making a good connection. Check for any debris and very carefully use a small non conductive tool like a toothpick to remove any. The pins inside can be easily damaged!
Most likely, the issue your iPad has is a worn out port. Unfortunately, this is not the easiest repair as it involves opening the iPad and soldering a new port in place. Apple will not do this repair, but a third party repair shop may.
Oh, and a future tip for buying new lightning cables is to only get the ones with the “made for iPhone/iPad” logo on them as they’re made to Apple’s specifications to ensure they don’t cause any harm to the port.
Hope this helps!
@@Batteryfixer Thanks! At the time I didn't find anything saying it was made specifically for Apple. I figured 1st Gen was so old no one bothered anymore, so I didn't do an exhaustive search. I will clean the port out and see what happens. Thanks again.
Trying this. Will I get shocked charging it this way?
Really great tutorial, I followed every step and it worked perfect, I charged to 4.4v and that got it to 70% charge, unfortunately I broke the power button when opening, ordered a new one tho. many thanks
Glad to help, good luck fixing the power button!
I have mine it’s still works 2022 i have 3 iPads
Screen light up, but logo not showing & it's shutdown after a blink.. what should i do...
It may need a higher wattage charger, if that doesn’t work, try charging the battery directly again
great video! really enjoyed the chill music you put into the video and your voice 👀🔥
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
looking forward for more! ;D
hi where can i buy the screen frame replacement i can't seem to find it in amazon 😅 need help
Hm, I’ve not seen just the frame for sale, but they’re probably available somewhere. Have you checked ebay or AliExpress? And if you can’t find it there, most digitizers come with the frame pre installed. Good luck!
Got it with the first choice super helpful thanks man 😂
Thank you Liam, I believe this is what I wanted to know. Where do you order replacement clips and switches?
Glad to help! ebay should probably have the clips and switches
My usb cable have a red ,black, white and green cable wich ones are positive and negative ?
Red is positive and black is negative
The white and green are data lines and aren’t needed for power.
Where can i find the flash memory chip on IPad 1?
That’ll be on the logic board under the shield. There may be more information at iFixit.com
Thks
Hi! great video. Quick question, can't I just expose the battery terminals and charge it without removing all the components you removed before doing it?
You can, but I’m not sure if it’d be good for the board. You may risk damaging it while charging like that. To prevent anything like that from happening, I recommend removing it.
@@Batteryfixer thanks!
@@jphormiga , did you strip the other components or risk it? And what happened if you risked it? I can't find my tori bits.. :D
@@JMWConceptsTheOfficial Hey! It was two years ago so I don't remember very well... but I think I risked it. It worked well, the iPad still lives to this day
Mine does show 2.6v on the multimeter should I just connect it to the electric with the 30 pin cable? I have 2 ipad 1 the 2 of them have good motherboards 1 has dead battery one is 3g an the other one is wifi
Sorry for my English bro 😅
Yes, it sounds like that battery has enough charge to charge directly from the 30 pin cable. You might be able to fix the dead battery with this tutorial though!
@@jesusjaravargas2698 don’t worry about it, it’s great!
I have a ipad mini 4 will it work?
My iPad 1st gen Wi-Fi model’s battery started smoking when I tried this, I made sure the positive and negative were in the right spot? Is my battery completely screwed now?
Hm that’s not a good sign. It sounds like there may have been a short, but I’m not sure. Id say the first step would be to remove the old battery and recycle it then get a replacement. The old one may be dangerous now unfortunately.
@@Batteryfixer Thanks for still responding to comments long after uploading, and you’re probably right I should replace it because now I’m too scared to even try putting that in. The iPad shows the Apple logo when plugged in without the battery and before I tried this if I plugged the iPad in with the battery connected, it wouldn’t show anything. Do you think iFixit has any batteries and if not what one do you recommend
Hi, I am wondering.... What if you remove the motherboard and try to charge the battery pack from the exposed pins that's connecting to the motherboard? Left is positive, right is negative? Why won't that work?
Good question, I tried charging from those pins at first, but that didn’t work since it’s going through the same protection circuitry that’s preventing it from charging when it’s in the iPad. I needed to bypass the protection circuitry entirely for it to properly work
The first part of the video is works but for me is not clear ....13 minutes of the video....When you connect the adapter! What kind of adapter used? What is the specification? 5v
I used a 12 w usb wall adapter that was originally sold with an iPad
Heyy Liam ! First of all thanks for the video ! I have a question tho. Can you dirrectly charge the battery without taking out any parts like i removed the screen and the tape over the battery, put electric tape and etc.. and charge it ?
Happy to help, while in theory it’s possible to do that, I don’t know how the iPad would handle that. It may damage the board itself. Never tested it though.
@@Batteryfixer Hey Liam ! I got news ! I left it charge for like 30 mins and checked on it ! The charger was a bit hot so i knew it was working (i don't have a multimeter). I hooked up the screen, plug it but i did not attach it and the Apple Logo was showing for a loooong time ! Then i saw a spinning wheel and it was charging with the low battery icon. I'm not calling that a win for the moment but i will still wait and see if it works and if i can boot to iOS. For the moment im not charging with the original cable but directly to the battery. I'll wait like two hours or less and see what happens ! Your video really helped tho so thank you !
my guy you are a magician how the hell do you open this thing without destroying everything
Really carefully! It takes time, and it’s easier with practice. Good luck!
@@Batteryfixer I have managed to open the ipad and “recharge” the battery but the ipad is still dead and only turns on after being left charging for an extended period of time and lasts about 4 minutes before turning off again could this be like some sort of power leak on the board?
How do I clip the screen back down? As i am struggling and don’t want to crack the glass by doing it wrong.
That’s understandable, it’s a tight fit and will need a bit of gentle force. Start by aligning the right side of the display in the frame then gently push along the top and bottom from right to left so everything clicks into place
I purchased a brand new 5s from eBay. It has a flat battery. Would this work?
In theory it could, I would recommend you try charging it for at least 24 hours first though
Very interesting to understand how to mend this. 😎👍 (but it is hard to hear you speaking, when there is music in the background)
Is it possible to just secure the leds and used the iPad with a hard wire power source ?
If you’re able to safely and consistently supply the same voltage as the battery did to the board, you should in theory be able to
Thanks for the video Liam. Question, any reason why you removed all the components before accessing and charring the battery? It would seem that the battery is accessible simply by removing the screen from the iPad?
Glad you liked it! I removed the logic board that way it won’t be at risk of any electrical damage while charging. It’s unlikely to be necessary, but I don’t want to risk any damage.
@@Batteryfixer Thank you. Going to give it a try.
How long did that work? Why not just buy a replacement/new battery for like $35 like I did..... dreading pulling this apart.
Fixed well over 10 iPads with this issue this way. All still hold a charge and work well a couple years later. Definitely worthwhile.
thanks a bunch Liam, that method worked! :)
How about for ipad mini2? It has different battery. Where do u think should i peel?
The process should in theory be similar, but it’s a bit much to explain through a UA-cam comment. I’m not sure if it can work on a mini 2 though so be very careful if you decide to attempt it
Hi Liam, thanks for the amazing video. I'm confused about something possibly basic. When I stripped my usb wire it had a pink and white wire., I confirmed which side was +ve and -ve by connecting the pink to the red on my multimeter and white to the black (ground) and confirming that I saw a +ve 5V. I attached the pink wire to the rightmost battery terminal and white to the left one and left it to charge for a while.
When I attempt to test the battery charge with a multimeter, I see -0.6. Is that normal or has something gone wrong?
that sounds normal to me, you can try reassembling it without sealing the display and powering it on while charging via the 30 pin connector. If it still doesn’t boot, you can try directly charging the battery for a bit longer. Hope this helps!
@@Batteryfixersorry just to be clear. My concern is that the value is -ve :x. I also just realized (after I made the comment) that it had automatically switched to millivolts. So I suppose that's nearly zero?
@@Batteryfixer Oh wow, its working now. Amazing! Thanks Liam
When doing this upgrade to new battery will the updates work on mini 1st generation?
This will only revive a dead battery and will not change the software.
I think my battery has to be replaced, how can I tell of the battery needs to be replaced.
If the iPad doesn’t show any signs of life after charging it for a few days with a 10w or higher adapter, it may need a new battery. If it does, you’ll need to open your iPad similarly to how I opened mine. It wouldn’t hurt to try recharging it the way I did in the video, but if that doesn’t work, it may need a new battery or have a completely different issue.
Here’s the guide in case you do need to replace the battery:
Wi-Fi model: www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPad+Wi-Fi+Battery+Replacement/2198
Wi-Fi + 3G model: www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPad+3G+Battery+Replacement/3186
Hi I have followed the above method which is fantastic by the way, thank you! My battery is showing 2.5V on the multimeter after charging, however when I put it back together I am still stuck within the bootloop on a 12W 30pin. The Ipad also isn't being recognised when plugged into a PC. I am trying to recover old photographs. Any hints as to what else could be wrong or how else I could go about data recovery?
You may need to charge it a bit longer. Some batteries seem to just take more time than others. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to buy a new battery or old 1st gen iPad with a working one. Look for one with a broken screen if you do, it’ll be cheaper
@@Batteryfixer Hi Liam, just wanted to update you and thank you for your video and advice. picked up a old 1st gen Ipad and replaced the battery of my old Ipad, wokring nicely now. Was able to get all the old photos from its storage for my parents to enjoy :)
the same problem...
hi how you going Liam good l hope can you please tell me if l can use power bank to my apple ipad 4 gen to charge it best wishes ERIKA
This technique may work on a 4th generation iPad, I haven’t tested it though so I’m not sure. In theory it’s possible to recharge it from a power bank too, but I haven’t tried that either. Definitely try charging the iPad from the lighting connector for a couple days before opening it in case it just needs more time to charge. Often that can make devices work again. Good luck, and be sure to closely monitor the iPad while it’s charging and charge it away from anything potentially flammable.
Hm. my friend found this iPad in a box with all the cables not connected. The display and the back were in the box. I reconnected The cable with 2 parts and the small cable, i restored it, but i found a problem. The screen wouldn't clip into the back all the way. I think this is because a lack of clips by the charger area, but it turned on. It showed the setup screen, but it didn't respond to any of my fingers, the home button didn't work, and the power button is stuck. I don't know how to fix this.
I recommend double checking the guide on iFixit’s website, there are a number of small connectors to keep track of. Sounds like the digitizer may be loose, try lifting the latches on the 2 piece cable’s zif connectors and reinstalling them. The home button may not be making good contact if there’s a gap in the frame, it needs to have contact with 2 spring loaded pins on the dock connector. Good luck!
Hi Liam, mine is swollen. Do I fix it with the same process or do I have to purchase another battery??
🤔
I tried it on a swollen battery once and it did seem to work but I wouldn’t recommend using a swollen battery.
great vid!
Thank you so much!
hi, when i use multimeter on + - after leaving it to be charged i get 0 signal. Volt is still 0 on my meter. Any tips?
May need to be charged a bit longer or your battery may not be recoverable. If the battery doesn’t feel slightly soft but instead hard/crunchy it’s gone completely bad.
@@Batteryfixer yeah, battery is dead but it was worth a try :D
Can you recommend a way to change the 30pin charging port to a newer port like usb or lighting? is it possble?. As i won't need to update SW as so old now
In theory it’s possible. I’ve seen people change lightning ports to usb c. Never seen it attempted on an iPad though
Any idea where to find a list of cell board part numbers? I'm assuming they differ from region to region.
Not sure to be honest. If you need a replacement one, try searching for “iPad A1337 cellular board”
Hi, may i know what kind of screw is that? Because i tried T5 and T4, both of them cant even fit the screw. Thankss

I have an iPad 1 with a black screen that keep flickering every 2secs. I can get it into DFU mode and my computer would recognise it. I've tried flashing it but it fails to go from DFU mode to Recovery Mode. Sounds like another hardware issue? Not battery? Thanks in advance!
That’s almost certainly the battery, that’s how the iPad reacts when it can’t detect one. If you follow the tutorial, it should fix the issue, good luck!
@@Batteryfixer Thanks so much! I'll try it.
@@deyemjames01 good luck!
Didnt work for me sadly :/
Just plug in the charger.
Hi; How to know if the battery is charging or not ?
When you’re charging it from the 30 pin connector, make sure you’re using a known good wall outlet, adapter and 30 pin cable. It should show some sign of life if you let it charge for a few hours. If it doesn’t, it may be a bad charge port.
When you’re charging the battery directly, you can periodically check the terminals with a multimeter to see if it’s increased in voltage
@@Batteryfixer sadly i dont have multimeter, have tried to charge around 8 hours but still boot loop , is that mean battery is completely dead? Or the usb cable is bad? Have tried to use 2 a adaptor, it warms a little but dont why still failed :(
