  • Blogging and UA-cam are both crazy-good opportunities, and there's plenty of reasons why you might be interested in getting started yourself! However, they both take a fair amount of work, so it's tough to do both, at least initially. That means a tough decision must be made: Blog or UA-cam channel?
What are your thoughts on this? If you already do one or the other, or if you're planning to start soon, then comment below and share why you made the decision that you did!

I think a UA-cam wins hands down, with a blog you depend on external traffic sources like Google which can be very competitive, a UA-cam channel however you have more chances of getting discovered through suggested videos and the massive amounts of ppl on the site daily.

Plus UA-cam is free, meaning you don't have to invest into it if..you already have the equipment such as: a phone/camera,mic, lighting or sunlight and video editing software. You can also find other editing software that are free if you don't have any money onto the pocket.

the matter is content , no platform and because youtube is free is millions of millions useless crap , the same when ppl using free wordpress them with free host for blogging.

I don't see it that way. Since people are directly coming in to UA-cam, or watching your video that has been embedded on someone else's blog, technically that's an outside source. Also, not everyone who uses UA-cam has a UA-cam account. Last point, when it comes to UA-cam, it really depends on your nitch. Some platforms do better with certain subject matters.

I completely agree. Blogging is kinda dead nowadays. I checked famous Instagrammer blogs and most posts have less them 5 comments, while they receive hundreds of comments on their UA-cam videos and Instagram posts

I decided to start a YT channel and then embed the video plus add the transcript to the blog. Best of both worlds in terms of how people learn. I just didn’t take into account just how much work video creation would be. P.S. Your hair looks boss! Loving it!

That's the thoughts I had on this. If I'm doing all the prep work for a video, then it's not too much more effort to also embed it into a blog and write it up. Having blogged before but never done UA-cam, I could be totally wrong in thinking this going to work. Does it need to be one or the other? At least to start I'd like to have the option of both to work out which works best for my business. Ps. Just subscribed to your channel, Tara.

Thanks Gillian! I’ve been focusing on my UA-cam channel so far, but now that I have that setup and going, I started a podcast and create a blog post for each episode. I’m planning to start making blog posts to go with some of my videos to cross promote. When starting, it’s good to pick one at a time to learn, but I’m at the point where I’m wanting to expand and diversify to multiple platforms. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

How I see it is that a blog is for people who are comfortable to write only and publish what they write, a podcast is for people who want to talk only and don't wish to appear on camera or deal with any kind of video editing and youtube is for people who like to produce videos. So there are several means for people to publish content whether it is in written format, audio format or video format.

Thank you Gillian, your video was helpful for me: I’ve been a UA-camr for 6 years and my time is so limited for making videos and I’m considering writing a blog instead. I think that you’re right about blogging being more useful for someone who doesn’t have big chunks of time available, compared to UA-cam, which quite honestly eats up what little free time I do have available to me.

  • @TrellWest

My UA-cam channel has been profitable from day 1 and I think that says everything about the value in the skill set you can leverage vs a blog. If you can film and produce video you’ll always have a job.

    • @toddvandell85
      @toddvandell85 5 років тому +6

Trell West Your channel has been profitable since day one? Wow.
That seems really rare to me or that you are an exception to the rule.
You must have a crazy huge specialized niche or have lots of great content or stuff to sell and promote.
I'm curious as heck now, how did you manage to start being profitable from day one?
It almost sounds way too good to be true, but if you built followings on the other social media platforms and told your followers you were launching a UA-cam channel, then maybe they were already primed and ready to join and you had or have something lots of people need or want.
What was your secret to launching a channel that was profitable from day one?
And was it a lot of good profit right away or do you just mean you started making money right away but in very small increments while you built your subscriber list?
Or like everyone else out there, did you already have a course set up and just used your YT channel to promote and sell your course?
How did you do it and how much profit, ballpark, have you generated in the process since you launched your channel?
      Inquiring minds want to know.☺

Maxjohan1983 in the last 7 days I’ve driven 500+ clicks to an affiliated product at 0.32 cents a click and 12 conversions at $16.00 for each.. Do the math. Subscribers is not the best metric to measure.

Faith and Family Farmhouse I replied above. In short, I pitched content to brands before making videos. I affiliated all my videos with affiliate links. I seo’d the heck out of titles. Okay first off, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your hair!! Gorgeous!! I've been doing the blogging for almost half of this year (from about late August till now) just (slowly) working on building my platform and Instagram, and I so agree with you- it's a LOT of work! Now that I'm earning enough money on sponsored posts, I'm going full-time to really dig into ads because from my friends in the food blogger world at least, it is quite easy to have most of your income come from ads once you have the number of sessions! My goal is to really start on the UA-cam part as well in the New Year now that I am full-time- it was difficult balancing all five platforms (blog, Pinterest- HUGE for food bloggers, really important, Instagram, Facebook, and UA-cam), and this video really helped give me an outline of what to expect as I grow and improve videos!! So thank you, Gillian!! Really amazing stuff!

Thanks so much for this video! You so clearly laid out what I was wrestling with for a couple of years. Although I set up the blog, I hesitated so long about listing my first post, I never did it. But I did start a UA-cam channel a couple of months ago. I'm not yet getting the audience I hoped for, but I know it takes time and patience...and I love making the Barbie doll videos for kids that I've been doing. So, although I'm just a novice...my advice is to make sure you do what you love!

Thank you, for the work you do; it has been incredibly helpful for me to understand these mediums that are new, to me.
I'm considering getting involved with some aspect of this new digital reality, to earn extra money.
And, as a practical matter, you gave me a clue, to the possibilities of what I was considering, of which, I am truly grateful.

I wanted to start a blog before UA-cam but it seemed easier to just film and upload videos. I still think about having a blog just so people have somewhere to go to but my main focus this year was just my channel.

Thanks for posting this vid. I've been on the fence for a while now. Definitely helpful and thorough. 👍🏻 Maybe a future video idea for you would be how you manage your channel and your family. How do you plan out your week to best utilize the time you have?

Make sure to have somewhere in the cloud to store a copy of ALL of your videos. That way if you and UA-cam ever divorce, you can simply move in with a new video host and download your videos & be back in business.

You forgot to mention that with UA-cam videos, you also have to basically write out a blog article. Maybe you don't have to go back and edit it, and maybe it doesn't have to be as detailed. However, you at least need an outline, and I prefer a pretty detailed script because it helps me organize what I want to say before I start recording.
I put up book summaries and reviews on my channel. If I didn't write out at least an outline, I would be completely lost on what I was trying to say, and it would take me way more than the number of takes it currently is taking.

I love UA-cam but I have so many other things I want to share that I can’t put in a video form so I like the idea of having both.
I know people say you should focus on one but my blog and UA-cam content will interchange so I feel like I can do both at the same time.

  • @tamarag2139

I think UA-cam would be a good choice because you can always repurpose your video into different content for other platforms. For example, a quote from your video could be used for an Instagram post later. 😊✍️

Blogging has been a thought I've revisited in recent months, so this comparison was fascinating. Your points ring true, also. I'm rather inconsistent in my UA-cam posting, as I was back when I blogged, and my channel has certainly grown faster than my blog did. Thank you for sharing these thoughts, Gillian! :)

  • @freethinker8047

Great comparison !! Thanks for putting so much thought into it.
I'm concerned about parts of my content being learned then "re-packaged" as someone elses. I notice this happens quite a lot, without the original creator getting credit. So, I'm thinking about possible alternatives to mitigate that possibility.

I love writing, but I enjoy the process of making videos for UA-cam. I would love to get to make some money with my channel, but that isn't why I make videos. I make them to be a part of the community of YT and to hold myself accountable in my goals. Thanks for the info!

I have been uploading UA-cam videos regularly since March, and just reached 50 subscribers. I also have a blog that has been bringing me traffic without me trying, so I am working on the blog more. One drawback is that UA-cam is free, while a website required hosting. However UA-cam requires equipment. So each one has costs before you make money. And you have to play by UA-cam's rules with monetization.
