I think it's definitely likely, and while we can't say for sure whether he did or not, with all of the other spooky rituals and things he did I wouldn't be surprised
I think you put it very well. The historical evidence are not conclusive, but based on what you shared, the indications that he did are strong.
I was a member since age 8 and I didn’t figure out that it was a religion based on smoke and mirrors until age 50. Looking at Joseph’s life, I would say that it is quite possible.

Watching those videos of temple ceremonies on UA-cam was genuinely really creepy. Knowing my family went through such bizarre behavior was just so shocking that they all thought that this was normal.

I was a member 46 years before leaving 8 years ago.I still study the history of the church and would argue that the tangled web of mormonism is the most interesting religion around.
All things seem to trace back to the Mormon these days.
I got to see the temple ceremony with the penalties intact just one time and it was changed by my 2nd time. The first time I went through the temple was in April 1990 in Manti where they do live sessions with real people acting out the story. I was 19 and it left me terrified, humiliated and ashamed.
The 2nd time was in Provo and, when they didn't do the penalties, it was super confusing. Like, wait... it changed? I was taught that this was the perfectly restored temple ceremony. How could it change?
I never liked the temple and couldn't understand when people would gush about how special and peaceful it was. To me it felt like a creepy monument to fear, shame and guilt.
I didn't want to rule over my wife, and I sure as hell didn't want to slit my own throat.

In reality, there is no distinction between dogmatic religious practices and ritual magic. They are exactly the same thing. In both, intention and emotion are key, and in both, invoking and evoking non-physical energies and beings is essential. Let's not pretend that one thing is evil and the other is good. Never went through the temple myself. When I learned about the not too long ago ritual of mimicking sliting one's throat during temple ceremonies, I was shocked and appalled!! Wouldn't put a single thing past js.
Even when growing up in the church I literally thought all of the temple stuff was creepy, because I guess people expect when you finish primary you are now ready to baptize for dead people you probably never even knew existed in their name apparently lol, when I became inactive when I stopped going to church I was literally curious why we had to be 18 and older to see the temple endowment process and after searching it on UA-cam it all makes sense… it’s literally giving cult and honestly that made me NOT want to go back to the church or even the temple. I don’t plan on returning to a place that sugarcoats the temple as this “amazing place” when in reality it’s just a whole cult ritual

as someone who has made a casual- not professional- study of charletanry...
1. meat animals that had to be "sacrificed" were basically either free dinner, or were never killed and were sold off elsewhere
2. non meat animals that were killed were almost always dogs- and in many accounts, not long after the sacrifice of the dog a farm had a lot of "livestock losses" and burglery... gosh, who would know that they sacrified their dog?

This is one of the most bazaar part of the Mormon doctrine. Thank you for being so honest about this. The whole doctrine is bazaar but this is N.E. of the most outlandish. I am so grateful for those of you have had the courage to face that huge church and show your own truth. I love many Mormon friends but I have always struggled with their belief of Joseph Smith and his doctrine. Satan has had a great influence on sincere people who have been duped . So sad, but I am encouraged by those of you have come forward with real truth. There is only one God. He does not lead people in different directions.

I left the Mormon church when I was 19 years old because I could not believe in so much of the doctrine. What I have discovered I the last year has been mind blowing! Joseph Smith was not a profit of God! He was a con man who practiced the occult for his own personal gain. So many people, including many of my family are stuck in the delusion.

I’ve been doing research on historical magic to better inform how I would want to celebrate Halloween if I wanted to infuse it with elements of Samhain. I didn’t realize until now that learning about early Mormonism would help me better understand folk magic from that time period. I think I’ll have to read Early Mormonism And The Magic World View.

I think it's likely that he did. Many of the beliefs JS espoused and then developed into a distinct Mormonism are in the same realm as the Spiritualist beliefs that came out of the Genessee Valley in NY State. And if you read about Emanuel Swedenborg (or read his books, which I haven't), you can see the parallels between his theology and JS's: he believed that there isn't a single hell and a single heaven, but instead a series of higher and lower heavens and hells. He also believed that spirits are intermediates between God and humans, so that the divine sometimes uses them as a means of communication. (Side note- you should wear the witch hat regularly and throw in the spooky voice every now and again._

If someone mentions their poor dog by name, and sadly recognizes it was needlessly murdered, the claim of animal sacrifice is likely true. What's sadder, is that JS knew it was a con. I'm sure he didn't really believe he'd find gold by appeasing a demon or supernatural being. It was all part of a game to keep his suckers hooked. User involvement always increases the sense of membership, just like a political rally, protest or riot gets people hooked even deeper. Murdering a dog as part of a con is seriously messed up. This makes some other religions in their current practice, look good in comparison.
As a foot note to this, a few years back, the supreme court said it's OK to do animal sacrifice in the name of religion. To my knowledge, chickens seem to be getting the worst of that ruling. Possibly a few goats and sheep too. I strongly hope no one is allowed to murder dogs in the name of religion. Fantasy prone personality disorders should not be constitutionally protected when harm comes to an animal.

Brother Joseph then said that he could in the name of the Lord. He, (brother Joseph) asked the brethren if they were not ashamed of such a spirit? Said he, I am. He then proceeded to reprove them for condescending to that spirit,- that they ought to be above it, that it was the spirit of a dog, and men ought never to place themselves on a level with beasts, but be possessed of a more noble disposition. He then said he had descended to that spirit in order to show the spirit which was among them. He further said that this explanation gave general satisfaction, and the most of them saw that he had only made these remarks for the purpose of instructing them, and warning them against such a spirit or disposition.”
