I got to see the temple ceremony with the penalties intact just one time and it was changed by my 2nd time. The first time I went through the temple was in April 1990 in Manti where they do live sessions with real people acting out the story. I was 19 and it left me terrified, humiliated and ashamed. The 2nd time was in Provo and, when they didn't do the penalties, it was super confusing. Like, wait... it changed? I was taught that this was the perfectly restored temple ceremony. How could it change? I never liked the temple and couldn't understand when people would gush about how special and peaceful it was. To me it felt like a creepy monument to fear, shame and guilt. I didn't want to rule over my wife, and I sure as hell didn't want to slit my own throat.

In reality, there is no distinction between dogmatic religious practices and ritual magic. They are exactly the same thing. I don’t plan on returning to a place that sugarcoats the temple as this “amazing place” when in reality it’s just a whole cult ritual

I think it's likely that he did. Many of the beliefs JS espoused and then developed into a distinct Mormonism are in the same realm as the Spiritualist beliefs that came out of the Genessee Valley in NY State. And if you read about Emanuel Swedenborg (or read his books, which I haven't), you can see the parallels between his theology and JS's: he believed that there isn't a single hell and a single heaven, but instead a series of higher and lower heavens and hells. He also believed that spirits are intermediates between God and humans, so that the divine sometimes uses them as a means of communication. Honest question: Is there a good replacement for the term "Mormonism," like Catholicism" or "Presbyterianism?" Joseph Smith's Jupiter talisman deserves some attention as well, since he kept it on his person always IIRC from Quinn's book. Great episode, Lexi!
In the Kirtland Council Minute Book for August 29, 1834, Brigham Young related the following story: “Brother Brigham further said, in relation to a certain difficulty which took place relative to a dog,- that on a certain evening after crossing the Mississippi River, brother Sylvester came up with the remaining part of the camp, when the dog came out and insulted him. he knew not whether he touched him or not. The next morning after hearing considerable complaint and murmuring concerning the dog. Brother Joseph spake to several brethren present and said, I will descend to the spirit that is in the camp, to show you the spirit you are of for I want to drive it from the camp. “The first man that kills that dog, (or my dog) I will whip him!” He thought about this time, that brother Sylvester came up, who said “If that dog bites me I will kill him.” If you do said brother Joseph “I will whip you” If you do said brother Sylvester, I shall defend myself the best way that I can! Brother Joseph then said that he could in the name of the Lord. He, (brother Joseph) asked the brethren if they were not ashamed of such a spirit? Said he, I am. He then proceeded to reprove them for condescending to that spirit,- that they ought to be above it, that it was the spirit of a dog, and men ought never to place themselves on a level with beasts, but be possessed of a more noble disposition. He then said he had descended to that spirit in order to show the spirit which was among them. He further said that this explanation gave general satisfaction, and the most of them saw that he had only made these remarks for the purpose of instructing them, and warning them against such a spirit or disposition.” www.josephsmithpapers.org/paper-summary/minutes-28-29-august-1834/10 There’s an interesting story in the Manuscript History of the Church, taken from Wilford Woodruff’s journal August 3, 1844: “The Twelve continued their journey through the day and night by stage[coach]. While upon the journey they overtook a company of Norwegians who were traveling with ox teams, and heavily loaded wagons one of which was stuck fast in the mud, blocking up the road, while several of them were whipping the oxen and bawling to them in the Norwegian language, which seemed to frighten the oxen, but they were unable to move the wagons on. After sitting and looking at them a moment President Brigham Young got out of the coach and stepped up and took the whip out of the hands of one of the Norwegians, telling them all to stand out of the way. He then talked to the oxen in a tongue which was not understood by Norwegians or English, and touching them lightly with the whip, they instantly pulled the wagon out of the mud and continued the journey, much to the astonishment of the Norwegians, and the surprise and amusement of the passengers on the stage.” www.josephsmithpapers.org/paper-summary/history-1838-1856-volume-f-1-1-may-1844-8-august-1844/300 “Isaiah gives us these poetically phrased particulars about animal life during the Millennium. “The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,” he says, “and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock.” Implicit in this pronouncement is the fact that man and all forms of life will be vegetarians in the coming day; the eating of meat will cease, because, for one thing, death as we know it ceases. There will be no shedding of blood, because man and beast are changed (quickened) and blood no longer flows in their veins. “And dust shall be the serpent’s meat,” meaning, as we suppose, that they shall no longer eat mice and vermin and animal life. “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord.” (Isa. 65:25.) And further: “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the suckling child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice den [adders’ den]. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain.” (Isa. 11:6-9.)” (Bruce R. McConkie, The Millennial Messiah, p.658)
If someone mentions their poor dog by name, and sadly recognizes it was needlessly murdered, the claim of animal sacrifice is likely true. What's sadder, is that JS knew it was a con. I'm sure he didn't really believe he'd find gold by appeasing a demon or supernatural being. It was all part of a game to keep his suckers hooked. User involvement always increases the sense of membership, just like a political rally, protest or riot gets people hooked even deeper. Murdering a dog as part of a con is seriously messed up. This makes some other religions in their current practice, look good in comparison. As a foot note to this, a few years back, the supreme court said it's OK to do animal sacrifice in the name of religion. To my knowledge, chickens seem to be getting the worst of that ruling. Possibly a few goats and sheep too. I strongly hope no one is allowed to murder dogs in the name of religion. Fantasy prone personality disorders should not be constitutionally protected when harm comes to an animal.
It an exmormon can demonstrate that the Mormon church lied to him/her (ie. Just about anything contained in the CES letter) then i would think that person could claim that their tything was fraudulently taken and could demand to be reimbursed. He then talked to the oxen in a tongue which was not understood by Norwegians or English, and touching them lightly with the whip, they instantly pulled the wagon out of the mud and continued the journey, much to the astonishment of the Norwegians, and the surprise and amusement of the passengers on the stage.”

“Isaiah gives us these poetically phrased particulars about animal life during the Millennium.
What they did with a dead sheep is clear. But what did they do with the dogs' cadavers. The same?
Joseph was a warlock
Interesting that his dad was in on it.
Aren’t Mormons concerned that the latter days have lasted almost 200 years? Do they foresee the date of the End?
365 * 200 = 73,000. That is a LOT of latter days!
OMG! I had to say all those things! Had to act out my murder. My kids made it out, then me as well. How it had me by the neck!
Side note but I love your top!!
Hey My birthdate is Sept 21. Apparently that date is special to Mormons who would've thunk it? Lol
It an exmormon can demonstrate that the Mormon church lied to him/her (ie. Just about anything contained in the CES letter) then i would think that person could claim that their tything was fraudulently taken and could demand to be reimbursed.
PS good job in cutting out all of that eye makeup! It was distracting and you don't need it, you look just great without it
