I've heard it explained that atheists don't get possessed because since we don't believe in God our souls are already damned and so Satan doesn't need to bother. Sounds a bit too convenient to me. I left the church 26 years ago so I haven't heard stories like this in a while. I had forgotten how ridiculous they are.

I was taught the same nonsense. I think much of the messaging was designed to make cognitive dissonance be a positive experience to build faith if you cut put it in the context of [persecution complex] being persecuted for your righteousness sake- no different from Jesus and the Apostles in the Bible.

When I was 16, a guy with frosted tips and pierced ears came to church and flirted with me for like a minute or two. The YW leaders were convinced he was the devil. Because apparently the devil went to a random LDS ward to flirt with a 16yo ace girl for two minutes...?

My mom told me about a time when she was a teenager at girls camp where apparently 3 girls used a ouija board and were possessed by demons, and the bishop had to drive up in the middle of the night so he and the other priesthood leaders there, one of which was my grandpa, could do an exorcism. The girls always said they were fine and nothing had happened, and my grandpa thinks they just can't remember because of the demons. I'm just imagining these girls messing around with a ouija board and then having to sit through a bunch of dudes doing an exorcism for no reason 🤣

I can think of one place that might be scarier. My first job was as a school janitor, I worked the afternoon shift which sometimes went into the night and I think there's nothing creepier than being alone in a school at night. And then when I had to go around turning off the lights. THAT WAS FREAKY. Then when I went away to college I became a student equipment manager for the football team and we took turns on nights when we might have to work late. Which didn't happen a lot but more than a few times. It was an older building in a very windy area and that was ALSO FREAKY! Especially since the school newspaper had published a story about the rumor that the place was haunted.

Thanks for sharing Lex. I remember people telling these kind of stories all the time while I grew up in the church. I even have one of my own. My "Demon Encounter" happened while I was on my mission. Here's the entry from my journal, with names changed for privacy:
"We went to an apartment building which we had visited previously. We walked up the stairs to one of the doors we figured was one of our former investigators. When we knocked, a growling voice from down the hall said "enter." Sister F and I looked at each other in confusion. The woman behind the door we knocked on wasn't who we were looking for, but as we turned to leave a door down the hall opened and a man came stumbling out and demanded to know who we were. I explained that we were looking for a woman we had previously taught. Sister F invited him to hear more about the Gospel. A low growl came from his throat and his face took on a feature that I can not explain. In a voice that was not his own he said "What would you say if you looked at the devil straight in the face?" All instincts screamed at me to run away, but something held me there. I could feel the Holy Ghost working through me. I don't know what I said, but I remember the distinct feeling of peace coming over me. I felt like Abinadi, who could not be destroyed by the priests of King Noah. But when I had delivered the words which the Lord wished me to, Sister F and I quickly retreated. It wasn't until we were in the car did I realize what had actually taken place. Fear wracked my soul, for I know that I was looking at a devil when that man spoke. this man clearly had an unclean spirit within him. I started crying , the realization of our danger hit me so hard. But the Lord protected us and led us with his holy arm. I am grateful he was watching over us."
What I didn't write in my journal was the next day Sister F declared we were going to go back to that mans apartment with the Elders and we were all going to perform an exorcism on him. I told her she was out of her mind and there was no way in hell I was going back to that mans house. I really was terrified to go back. I had a lot of dangerous experiences happen to me on my mission.
Looking back on it, the man was probably drunk off of his ass and decided to scare a couple of naïve girls wondering around on a cold, dark winter night.
I'm laughing and cringing so hard while I re-read this. One, my grammar is bad; two, I sound like someone who has been reading the Book of Mormon way too much. 🤣

Oof, some of these tales bring back memories. My dad is superstitious in the medieval sense. I heard so often about people being possessed by demons, and not to discuss supernatural things like ghosts. I remember being a child, around 6 years old, and i told my parents i didnt like going to church for the first time. I got a lecture from my father and a story of a kid around my age who didnt go to church with his family, and because he stayed home a robber(possessed by a demon) broke into the house and killed the kid. It was a very "Thats why you always leave a note!" upbringing...

Edit: omg I also spent a lot of my teens thinking that I was prone to possession from demons, but it turns out it was an unfortunate combination of DID and severe prolonged insomnia scrambling my brains. Once I left home (and the church) and got help with my sleep issues/therapy, these issues improved significantly, where getting countless blessings did worse than nothing.

My patriarchal blessing happened when I was an adult as I was a convert at age 26. The patriarch had to be 90 years old if he was a day. His hands kept sliding down the sides of my head and he'd have to repeatedly reposition them. It said I would be an inspiration through music and I used to joke about a tissue and comb since I didn't play an instrument. It said I would entertain the 3 Nephites in my home due to my worthiness. I would joke that the day they showed up my house would be a mess. It also said my sons and daughters would be examples of righteousness, yet i was infertile and never conceived. Now that my husband and i are out due to the "revelation" instructing the church to shun and shame the 8 year old children of same gender families , I know it's a bunch of bs.

I thought my reading was very peculiar. Later we all got transcripts in the mail. Only mine said "VOID" lmao ! Apparently he forgot many things (ritual repeated statements) ie: I am the linage of.... idk anyone who had to do theirs over again but I took it as a sign and never went back to the fortune teller- lol

My family has a bunch of German shorthaired pointers, and they got out one day and a roaming the neighborhood and we didn't know. The only one home at the time was my younger sister. She discovered they were gone and started calling us and calling around and looking around the neighborhood and she couldn't find them. And then she heard a knock at the door, a 'mysterious man She didn't recognize (Not one in the neighborhood and not one from the ward) had the dogs and said are these yours? And the dogs ran inside. Oh my gosh I've been looking for them everywhere Yes thank you so much!!!!
My step mom gets home and is told the story, and her first response was 'OH THAT MUST HAVE BEEN ONE OF THE THREE NEPHITES, YOU WERE SO LUCKY!!!! WOOOOOOW"

Silly Satan! Cults and good movies need a bad guy more than any other doctrine to give purpose and unify the group. You see this with Mormonism, most Christian denominations, political parties, and Marvel Comics. After sharing CES letter highlights with a friend, she said, "well, you might be right, but I KNOW Satan lives, and no one can convince me otherwise." Yikes.

My mormon 'sponsor's you will, told me that it was Satan talking through my dad and we needed a priesthood holder to banish him. Needless to say, my dad did NOT take this information very well 😂 He did still let me go to church service on Sunday, but I quickly lost interest, and I'm sure that was Satan too 🙄🤪🤣

My old Branch President told a Sunday School class about the time his grandfather saw Satan outside the Cardston Temple. He felt a premonition of evil and asked the Lord to open his eyes - and there was Mr. Beezybub! Interestingly, he described the devil as being one of the most handsome men he had ever seen, the only thing wrong was the evil look in his eyes. Grandpa quickly held his arm to the square and told Satan to depart - the devil got a scared look on his face, moaned and disappeared, leaving the smell of sulphur in his wake.
BTW, the Cain/Bigfoot story appeared in The Miracle Of Forgiveness.

7:38 I had my first and only episode of sleep paralysis when I was 13. I thought it was a demon. My parents were only cultural Catholics, but they sent me to Catholic school where I became indoctrinated and believed it was true. When I had recovered from the sleep paralysis episode, I dashed upstairs to my parents room and told them what had happened. They didn’t know what sleep paralysis was, but they were smart enough to convince me that it wasn’t a demon - It was just my brain reacting to the painkillers. (I had just gotten my wisdom teeth out and had been given opiates for the first time.) It took me a while to believe them, but I can’t imagine what it would have done to my psyche if they had confirmed that it was, in fact, a demon. My terror would have been traumatizing.

What a great topic! The superstition that seems to come along with high demand religion, particularly Mormonism, always seems to get blamed on Satan when things go wrong... because the church "is never wrong." I had one of those self induced feeling the powers of darkness while on my mission. My mission president, a BYU-I professor of psychology, didn't seem to think much of it really making some loose quote about "opposition in all things." Looking back at it now I just wanted one of those epic conversion stories we always hear about from leaders. It wasn't long after I left my mission early, and began the years long process of leaving the church once I realized it wasn't what it claimed.

Can't wait for the exorcism episode. Lol, I have to admit, my companion and I "exorcised" a demon when I was a missionary. One of the most bizarre experiences I've ever had. I remember feeling simultaneously weirded out, creeped out, and utterly ridiculous all at the same time. Someone will have to double check my memory on this, but I seem to recall that there was a section in the old white pocketbook on how to do it. I think it was your typical blessing, but you have to cast out the demon in the name of the father, the son, and the holy ghost or something like that.
We did it cause a member came and told us that their sibling was possessed. It was extremely anticlimactic. We finished and absolutely nothing happened at all, so we shook hands and left. My companion and I then spent the rest of the evening creeping each other out with scary Mormon stories. We talked to the branch president later that evening. He told us that it was like the tenth time they had asked missionaries and other priesthood members to do it. He was actively trying to get them to go seek therapy. We laughed and felt even more silly.

Back in the late 1970s I flew to Washington, DC to attend the wedding of one of the missionaries that taught me, the DC temple was only a few years old. His family had driven from TN and we were all going to ride in his grandpa's car but it wouldn't start the morning of the wedding. We took a taxi, he got married, took a taxi back the the hotel and when Grandpa tried the car started right up. His cute little grandma said, "that old satan tinkled in the carburetor this morning. "

When I was a TBM, I absolutely would have believed everything you shared in this video 😅😂-- now that I am free of the cult, I can't believe I ever thought any of it was true. The indoctrination, mind control techniques, and strict structures of a closed construct system ruled every decision I ever made up til about 2020. Covid saved my life, and my 5 kids' lives.

Oh hey! I betcha that Mariner Merrill guy (the one with the satanic horsemen at the Logan Temple) is my relative! My uncle is David Mariner Merrill. (Irrelevant, but fun.) My good friend at BYU casually mentioned that they had a demonic possession at (another coincidence!) Merrill Hall. The guys came over from one of the men's halls and got it taken care of. It didn't occur to any of us that there was anything weird about it! 😲

I wasn't raised Mormon, but I was raised what I call Christian Fundie Lite. One of the reasons it took me SO long to get around to deconstructing, is because when I was a toddler I had a night terror where I saw the faces of demons hovering over my crib. They looked kind of like Kabuki theater masks.
This made me fervently believe in the supernatural, demons, and the devil, because I had SEEN the evidence. It wasn't until my late 20s that I had my next night terror (I've had many since), and it began to dawn on me that I might have just been my brain messing with me. It took another decade for me to fully deconstruct, but that was the first inkling.
I'm now an atheist/philosophical naturalist, and therefore have no belief in the supernatural whatsoever.

My parents AND grandparents would do that too! They'd constantly blame any inconvenience in preparations for going to church or the temple as being Satan actively working to disrupt them/us. It was stressful to hear as a kid! And, then on those 'Satan's working hard' days, they would spend the whole church meeting or temple visit trying to "discern" what good/spiritual thing Satan was aiming to interrupt, therefore they would do extra (be extra nice, make extra comments in sunday school, pray extra hard, be extra close to the spirit) and by doing extra someone somewhere would compliment, or praise, or remark in a way that reinforced the belief that THIS was the thing Satan didn't want. They made their own self-fulfilling, self-perpetuating prophecy. T n T

29 years in the church before I left, 15 years out. Never heard about Cain roaming the earth. 3 Nephites for sure. Every time a stranger helps a Mormon in need, it MUST be one of the Nephites! For sure. No other explanation than one of the three Nephites driving an old truck with jumper cables when your car battery needs a jump. Weird tho the three Nephites never intervene in child abuse and abduction. Just there to help in car emergencies because AAA is NOT an option.

There are some missionary rumor stories I heard on my mission that supposedly a lot of Mormons have heard and passed on, hopefully someone can fill in details I don’t remember:
-a missionary in one of the Asian missions who looked into some sketchy practices (with the intent to know them to help him convert) and during one night was suddenly pinned to the ceiling. (The moral of the story was that some things are best left alone)
    - a missionary in a South American mission who fell off a path, separated from companion, and broke his leg. Then a strange man came out of the jungle and said he could heal him. Then proceeded to heal his broken leg but did so with voodoo ish chanting. Then disappeared back into the jungle. (discussions following this story were that even satan has some level of power on this world that he can use to entice new followers)
Of course these were among other rumor stories about district meeting orgies, horrible homophobia-driven secretly gay companion stories, and the secret apostate groups within missions who sewed beads into their garments depending on their rank.
@exmolex if you want some detailed “apostate” missionary stories, including the group I started on my mission, let me know

I'm not even 3 minutes into the video but I just had to comment on the first story. To a member of the church this experience might sound so cool and faith promoting, but to me, an exmormon athiest who does believe that there is some sort of afterlife or spiritual realm as I've just seen too much stuff to suggest otherwise, this sounds so corny. Like you mention in the video, 'Who are you? What can I do for you?' 'I am Satan'.
Wow, powerful stuff right there... 😂
