Greetings from Germany! Dear Ryan, I love your UA-cam content and have already bought books from you, not least Aurelius' introspections. Anyway, the German saying „In der Ruhe liegt die Kraft“ (In tranquility lies strength) is of unknown origin, it is not from Goethe. Regarding Angela Merkel, I find the classification under Stoiszism interesting - and very appropriate. Whether Angela Merkel was a great (about minute 56) - undoubtedly the longest she was - chancellor is currently the subject of discussion in Germany. Here, of course, the Ulkraine War plays the decisive role. To say it with another German quote, this time from Theodor Fontane's novel Effi Bries, "Ein weites Feld" (A wide field). Thanks also for the great content. By the way, my first UA-cam comment ever!
"there is no alternative" is one of her catchphrase. And a lot of not doing sh*t, sit and wait out the shitstorm. She was the GOP here in a nutshell. 16 years stagnation is not a stoic trait iirc Also greetings from Germany. Also like the content but this is a really biased and uniformed interview :(
@@jimjonjimjonjon 16 years of stagnation - really the best way to describe her time as chancellor. She and her ministers are one of the biggest reasons why Germany is so far back in so many things; whether it's renewable energies, digitalisation or our army - the 16 years of her reign were no good for Germany
Hello Ryan Holiday, i love your work so much. I have benefited a lot from your videos recently, thank you for helping me change my life. Carry on working hard!
I love your channel! It’s actually thought provoking and not just fake deep and I appreciate your work. It inspired me to make a channel and expound on some topics of my own 🙏
Not sure the reason for all the hate for Merkel in the comments, but america would be very fortunate to ever have more leaders like her instead of loud, boisterousness with no substance
I can’t believe that I never realized the stoic element in Angela Merkel! Even though I didn’t agree with her on all political positions, I always admired her calmness under fire and general demeanor. I initially considered her lack of vision a weakness, however her strategy of “auf Sicht fahren” turned out to be a much better approach for her time. In 2015 (in my opinion) she did the wrong thing for the very right reason, it could be argued whether this is better or worse than doing the right thing for the wrong reason (DeSantis’ Covid strategy for example). Anyhow, I think future historians will consider her one of the great politicians of the 21st-century. In my opinion she is also a poster child for modern day applied stoicism.
I think the journalist blurrs a very important line here. There is a difference between being unshakable, having incredible self discipline, etc. and stoicism. Stoicism is not just a mode of conduct, it also brings certain values. It requires that you HONESTLY look around and see the world for what it is. Not what it could be, or what it superficially seems to be. And she was extremely lacking on that front. As a physicist she had to know what it means if there's consensus about topics in the scientific community. Yet she chose to repeatedly not follow that consensus for her and her parties personal gain. Climate change is one example. The desolate state of the German military and the rotting rail infrastructure are other ones. These major issues aren't partisan. The solutions to them are and everyone can have their opinions about those. But the issues are simply there and need to be solved. And instead of looking at the issues, Merkel either avoided them or actively made them worse, despite being told what she's doing. And thereby utterly failing her stoic duty to the people. So calling Merkel stoic, because she stood her ground seems to me like calling a lethargic depressed person staying in bed while their house burns around them stoic. They're not stoic. They're just steadfast in situations only fools would be steadfast in.
I’ve always held Angela Markel in the highest esteem .. WHAT A LEADER & A SAFE PAIR OF HANDS! So glad your highlighting her in this way! ....She doesn’t shout for attention in the way that so many politicians of less ability do! BRAVO!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This lady is naïve. The GDR wasn’t a bad place to live. Angela didn’t have to overcome more than many others who have had actually a shitty life but are unknown. I’m not saying Merkel isn’t a brilliant person but we have to be careful not to fall into idolatry.
@@wowmanhaha I understand why you ask about the Stazi. My point is that Merkel, unless she was tortured by the Stazi, didn’t have it that bad. I lived in Hungary in the 80s and I’m Cuban. So I can tell you with a certain degree of authority that the GDR wasn’t a bad place to live. I’ve also been to Africa and of course live in Cuba through the 90s, which gives me some perspective.
Germans will have a different view on that, especially on the last 2-3 years she reigned.
So true.
I would say not just Germans, but anyone invested in the best interests of Europe.
Nah bro
Here in america we'd be lucky to have leaders like her.
In der Ruhe liegt die Kraft ❤

What a terrible advertisement for Stoicism
"In der Ruhe liegt die Kraft"---- Confucius. Translated "in calmness lies strength"
Oh, so that was stoicism... i always thought she was just a highly unqualified person for this job 🤔
Next up; Joe Biden's "thoughts" are of classical stoicism 🤡
@@Gameplayery 😂
She's a Klaus Schaub puppet like Tony Blair and many other politicians.
Cancel culture. That is how she uses her power. Go along to get along what is going on? This is not stoicism.

Queen vs Merkel. One is of German stock and the other from Polish
Although Kati’s red nose has fallen off if you listen carefully you can still hear her huge shoes knocking against her desk.
