A few weeks ago, one of our ewe miscarried. She behaved like a sheep close to dying. She chose solitude for 3 days and did not move. Tears were rolling out her eyes. Never prior I witnessed this. When I "broke" one of our hens because I did not want her to brood, she basically became crazy. I will never do this to another hen. Ever. Anyone who witnessed animals up close will never ridicule any human mother's emotional state.
I love watching our sheep's birthing. I never interfere because they don't need my help to know how to do it and how to take care of their newborns without reading books, without driving to anywhere else , without a team of white coats and sterile metal objects. Babies also right away know what to do. Humans have superior intellectual intelligence, but in comparison our intuitive intelligence is impaired by human intellectual obesity. I had pet chickens. In my area they’re always looking out for hawks. I watched my little rooster look up at an airplane one day. He cocked his head sideways like “what the hell is that?” All he knew was it wasn’t any kind of bird he had ever seen and went about his day lol but I “saw him thinking.” Moral of the story, chickens are pretty cool. Lol
I'm thinking of Ryan's comments about his donkeys. Instead of the old tired screen savers, I use a UA-cam live webcam feed of an artificial watering hole in the Namib desert. At first I kept thinking the video feed was failing and I was looking at a static image. But no, the animals just kept their movement at a minimum. My humble theory is it is a natural behavior, an economy of motion. Keep your energy stores for times of fight or flight.
Stoicism seems to be our modern, logically thinking side of the brain telling the anxious animal still in us that it doesn’t need to feel that in these scenarios and situations in modern life

This Nikola Tesla quote is relevant to the discussion on the podcast in all due love and respect, and as follows, The scientists of today think deeply instead of clearly. One must be sane to think clearly, but one can think deeply and be quite insane : Nikola Tesla. I feel the interviewer at times quite rightly so, was showing his patients and compassion to the guest. It sure would be quite irrational to even think a monkey could possibly learn English language because it's simply Not a Human being and that is that. One of our troubles which are often lacking in our own awareness is that we're using cognitive methods which are processes of languages and symbolism, which are understood on the human levels. You'd simply have to be a Monkey to Think and react like one, and have a monkey so called mind to find out where your trousers are lol. Many thanks to you Ryan.
Maybe we can look at animals differently when our livelihood is not attached to them. If your livelihood means you take a calf from it’s mother it would help you if you are cold to their feelings. If your child were sad or upset for the same 3 days that the mother and calf cried for each other, and then went back to being normal, could you tolerate that?
