- Angela Merkel is about to step down as German Chancellor. After 16 years, the country will soon have a new government, and a new political leader.
Often dubbed the most powerful woman in the world, Angela Merkel’s tenure as chancellor was marked by a series of crises - from the financial crisis, to the climate crisis, to the coronavirus pandemic. In 2015, when a growing number of Syrian asylum-seekers were reaching Germany, Merkel declared, "Wir schaffen das" (We can do this!) - a line which became legendary.
In this DW Interview led by Max Hofmann, Chancellor Angela Merkel looks back at her time in power. Max Hofmann asks Merkel how she sees her political legacy, what achievements she is particularly proud of, and what her plans for the future look like.

I have to say, I disagree politically in almost every way with her but I admire her for her calm, her understatement, her endurance, for her intelligence. Find another politician who doesn't have a scandal in so many years, who still lives in the same flat as before her/his career started, who still washes her/his clothes her/himself.
Many people were not happy to see you doing your job for the same reason that you were happy.
But i'm sure that the history will make the difference.

All the world leaders has so much to learn from her. She is the one person I actively follow in politics. If she ever turns to writing , I would love to read almost everything from her. Especially her autobiography if she ever write. God bless her.

You Germans are lucky to have one leader under democracy for this long of a period. Continuity is a weakness in many other democracies. After that recognition, you can overlay your opinions on her, but respect her for what she represented.

The elected leaders are answerable to the free media when there's a lot to ask. Or should the people wait till monsoon/ winter session of assembly so that opposition may ask and they reply? Free press/ media is indeed a fourth pillar of democracy that evolved with time. So don't belittle the idea of press and giving interview. At least it is a nive gesture that any democratic leader can do, words do heal problems! Evading from questions and dissidents is not less than the trait of a Dictator.

The way she speaks, her gestures, way of pragmatism and thoughtfulness are just unimaginable for any politician to have these days. She embodied german culture and european values, while staying true to herself. She remained humble, even though she possessed this immense power not many people really have or ever had. No scandals in her politics, not a single case of corruption, not a single abuse of her position... This way we (Europeans) all had unconditional trust, faith and respect for her and so did the rest of the world. She embodied German transparency (trust into the brand "MADE IN GERMANY" ). We knew that under her rule everything was going to be okay, that she would be proud of us in good times and be there for us in bad times.
What she did in 16 years of her leadership is exceptional. She is German "Mutti", and our European "Mother". If she ran for another term, everything would have been so much better (yes, she messed it up with Russia, but she would find a way out, because she is so exceptional in communication to the world, determined in finding a compromise, and known for strong and stable decisions, while retaining what was in the best interest of her people and us in the EU). Not many politicians are able to confront and acknowledge their mistakes and overturn them to their advantage or find new better solutions to the problem. She did just that, and she would have done it again.
With utmost respect to her, "our mother". I'm saying this with sadness, because she has stepped down and with happiness, because of her legacy as one of the most pure and exceptional politicians of modern time.
